How much damage can leaks do? There are so many things that can happen and today we are going to explore some of the funniest, most infamous video game leaks in history!
The Half-Life 2 Leak is just fascinating to me. It's like an entirely different game. American architecture, underwater Rebel base, the Hydra, Hyperborea, the Wasteland, the Air Exchange... It was also pretty insane that someone managed to make a mod using the leaked content before the official release of both the game and the dev kit. It speaks volumes of the talent of the modder being able to figure out a buggy game engine that was still incomplete, and make a playable mod out of it almost an year later. It's called "The Thing", and while the gameplay kinda sucks there, it's still pretty incredible it happened.
You can tell Act Man is loving RDR2 since he's showing gameplay in the sponsor and has the soundtrack in the background of the video, you love to see it
I cant play rdr2 because there is some issue either on rockstar's end or logitech's end where rdr 2 just does not register logitech mice. I'm gonna have to buy a new mouse one of these days to be able to play
The history of the half life 2 leak is fucking crazy. The entire source code was leaked but finding a compiled playable version was almost mystical. There were screenshots of really broken levels that some managed to get working. Meanwhile literally everyone who was trying to get it to work was paranoid because valve had undercover FBI agents (at least that was a rumor) contacting people spreading the leaked code with it's origin in question. Like, there was one story where a hacker who was spreading the code was getting lowkey threatened by a FBI agent by witnessing some random guy who contacted him defacing a bunch of websites and pulling his name, address and IP. Every gaming forum was on fire with people wanting to get a actual running version of Half Life 2, many claimed to be the original leaker too. Everything got even more crazy when Gaben himself asked the community for help.
Then they tried to bait the actual hacker in coming over to the USA, but the German police got him first. And to this day HL2 Beta fanboys cry about the leak as it was the sole reason the Beta was scrapped
This reminds me. Back in 2009, early footage of the "No Russian" mission from Modern Warfare 2 was leaked and it was picked up the Daily Mail, basically them blasting the game for daring to go this far. And like the hungry little CoDomite I was back then, I hunted for that footage. Didn't really spoil my excitement for the game though. Same thing happened with Modern Warfare 3 when the mission "Mind the Gap" from MW3 was kinda leaked. Daily Mail had another go at CoD on that also.
A fun little leak is when D.C. Douglas, the voice actor of Albert Wesker for a few of the Resident Evil games, most iconically RE5, leaked concept art of the RE4 remake Wesker design in a private group chat before the game even got revealed (I think.) He also mentioned separate ways if I remember correctly. Anyhow, Someone in that chat leaked screenshots of him leaking it to them online, and if you were wondering why Wesker has a different voice actor in the remake, you now know why. He later stated his days of voicing Wesker are over, and this is most probably why, and at the very least a large reason why. Another fun blunder is Dan Southworth, the man who plays Vergil in Devil May Cry, accidentally leaking DMC5 at a panel, although he did it in a vague way, stating that Capcom would be bringing “[Nero, Dante, and Vergil] back”, and he and Dante’s voice actor played it off as a joke (while Nero’s voice actor laughed his ass off in the background.) Interestingly, he never lost his job, although this is probably due to the fact that this was a genuine slip-up rather than an intentional leak (he turned to Dante’s VA after saying what he did and aked “we can say that, right?” The response to which was “no.”) and wasn’t anything substantial like straight up concept art.
Wonder if the leaker in the private group chat would still have done it if they knew it would screw Wesker out of his iconic voice. Like, we'll never see him reprise the role after 5 because of that dude. I know the actor posted it but still.
@@OinglorBoinglor50/50 people are gonna mostly put the blame on the actor due to him being the initial leaker, or he gets cyberbullied for screwing the VA over that fans are familiar with
@@R3TR0J4N Same, LG has invented the solution to the flat vs curved monitor debate and deserves to be spread. Now only the lowering of the price is the determinant.
And some of the most contreversial leaks were fake too because I remember there a rumor disguised as a leak About Ellie dying from Abby but it was turned out to be fake.
and it will never stop being hilarious.....Even more so with the imbeciles who cried about Abbey and a "sex scene" that was literally 10 seconds of a cut scene and you never see anything else. Yet the game still sold 11 million copies.
@@toledochristianmatthew9919 Yeah considering how Naughty Dog and Druckmann unnaturally crunched their developers to get this game done, I'm not surprise that one of the developers leaked the game out of pure frustration thanks to Druckmann and co.'s awful decisions
I think that we have unfortunately reached a point where the internet is so ubiquitous that media is going to be leaked more often than not... I miss simpler times when stories like this were rare, and hype was something that we were really allowed to enjoy.
@@ImNotFine44 Seriously! The amount of smoke and mirrors in MODERN gaming hype has made me happy leaks exist. The ability to see through the lies and bullshit and be allowed to think for myself if its worth the asking price is great! r/patientgamers is a thing for a reason.
For halo 4. They rebuilt old devkits that had the red ring that had been sent to a landfill. Got the consoles working again, then gained access to "partnernet" which basically was XBL for devs and gave them access to builds across the entire industry of unreleased games.
I think if the Last of Us 2 wasn't leaked, people would actually be more upset, and it would have snowballed worse from there. The people who saw the leaks and were upset at the story didn't have to buy and play the game -- so imagine how much more angry they'd be in the moment it happened. Might be the response the developers were trying to illicit, but it still would have been worse than what we got to see.
Poetic justice that Act Man gets sponsored by LG TV. Quantum Karma! Thanks for always delivering the highest level content! You deserve all the TVs bro.
I think when games gets leaked ,people who created those games should use the situation to their advantage.Use those leaks to create even more hype or expectations because that is the only reaction that will help with a situation.
I got to go to E3 once - Ubisoft invited me as one of their community ambassadors back in 2014 and it was an experience I will truly never forget. RIP E3 :( I just wish I got to go again.
The last of us leak was a hellstorm the likes the gaming industry might never experience again. All mixed with all of us being quarantined at the time, this was truly an event that shook everyone.
Terrible writing from a terrible person got a very deserved comeuppance. Always remember that THIS is the shithead who pushed Amy "I wrote The Legacy of Kain" Hennig out of Naughty Dog.
One thing I can say about The Last of Us Part 2 is that one UA-camr definitely didn’t want to finish the game because of Joel’s death. His name is CoryxKenshin. People who watched him and his video could understand that he didn’t see the leaks, was genuinely shocked by that event and after that event he said “I don’t wanna play this game anymore”. But it’s only one guy’s opinion. It was to point out my side that no matter if the games get leaked or not, SOME people would still have the same opinion on this game.
There was also one Korean streamer that is a big fan of Joel and saw him as a father figure in a way. So after the death scene, he actually grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the disk in half
Loved the intro, as a dev it is pretty accurate! Leaks can take many shape or form. Back in the days when gaming magazines were a thing, a QA employee got fired because he leaked a video of a crazy elaborate easter eggs that was actually a signed deal between the company and a magazine for the exclusivity. When under an NDA never assume anything and just don't show stuff.
I’ve considered it a lot since TLOU2 came out, and I still think that it would have gotten a lot of hate regardless of a leak. That game was just destined to divide the fans, and I still can’t bring myself to replay it despite having spent weeks of my life playing the first game.
@@Majinhero oh, absolutely! Which is why I am leaning more and more into the idea, that the altered cutscenes in the Story Trailer, were specifically done to try and win over the ones, who had gone from "day 1 purchase" to either "wait and see" or "never buy".
I somehow managed to avoid all the TLOU2 leaks and decided to stream a few hours before it’s midnight launch. One of the first chat messages I got was “Hey did you see that leak where *INSERT GOLF SCENE*?” I was less than thrilled
The Star Rail and Genshin update leaks are so helpful for F2P players. Knowing if characters are worth it long before they release is so helpful. The subreddits are also ironically very good at keeping actual spoilers hidden so you don’t accidentally see them.
I managed to avoid TLoU2 leaks and spoilers, yet I still hated what they done to the characters and the fact that I had to play as Abby half of the game, not to mention the fake trailers they put out, getting angry just thinking about it, fuuuuuck! But I agree, no devs deservs the leaks and getting hacked. The companies on the other hand... I don't know, all the predatory and anti-consumer bulshit they do lately, it's hard to sympathise when they are blatantly trying squeez as much money out of people as they possibly can, some even target kids with that bs so the morality of it all fades to "I don't really give a damn any more" for me.
I managed to avoid TLOU2 spoilers up until this video. insane I know but I am usually careful about turning things off and not reading further. I know its been years but I havent been able to get a PS and I am gutted we didnt get a spoiler warning on this vid. @villiamkovac4787 @TheActMan
@@bradlonkey3224 I am sorry to hear that, but as you said, it's been years and you could have stoped watching as soon as the topic of TLOU2 come up, just to be sure you see no spoilers, still, feels bad man.
Been watching your videos for a little over a year now and just gotta say you out together outstanding videos. The way you talk and edit them is so entertaining and your passion for halo is what got me watching you consistently. Keep up the good work
I was late to the game with The last of us part 2, I went into it completely blind and not knowing anything about leaks and I STILL hated the story. I know there aren't many out there like me who had only played the first game and knew nothing else but I truly believe from an unbiased perspective that the story is hot dogsh*t
Plenty of people out there who didn't see the leaks first and agree with you. Little more complicated than "hot dogsh*t" to me but generally speaking yeah. More like force feeding players a theme through ham-fisted manipulation tactics and knowingly using the characters players are buying the game for as punching bags in order to drive the point. Just mean spirited.
@@CraigJS91 I totally agree but I will always hold up to the believe that the numerous plot holes, plot conveniences and character re-writes add up to a horrible story, 21st century politics and manipulation put aside.
I also played TLOU 2 when it launched. I felt several directions on story was... questionable at best, but I wasn't infuriated like others. I think it's because I wasn't emotionally attached to the first TLOU like many others. I thought the entire discourse was mostly stupid.
I would also like to mention the Nintendo Gigaleak, which is one of the least harmful, but one of the most interesting leaks we ever gotten. To learn that L was in fact real after all this time is just awesome.
@@TookMeAlongTime could have just said that Joel is old and mostly stays in the Jackson so the game is focused on Ellie? The point the OP is making is that they replaced characters in certain trailers with Joel to make him seem like a more prevalent figure.
@@Aspecscubed First of all I will push back on the "you guys" statement. Just because I'm critiquing a marketing strategy of the game you are lumping me in with a group of seething fans that seem to take joy in hating on the game for any reason. That's not me, and making negative assumptions about a person based on your own biases is a bad move. as for the main content of your rebuttal, If Druckmann, when asked about the status of Joel, had just refrained from answering with something like I said earlier or a simple "you'll have to play the game to find out" or something like that, then no I (not one of "you guys") wouldn't have said he lied.
@@TookMeAlongTime In the trailer, they switched Jessie's character model with Joel's and had Troy Baker say "You didn't think I'd let you do this on your own". That is text book false marketing
I honestly feel so bad for insomniac. Early footage of Wolverine and their next 6 years worth of projects was bad enough but personal information on their employees? Like c’mon man
I remembered when I was on Discord with my boys back at 2020, one of them was go off in the call so I asked what wrong. He told me that TLOUP2 was leaked online and was pissed, unfortunately I was curious so I asked for the first 5 mins of story, when he told me that Joel was immediately killed....I wanted to throw up, after that he told me everything and I was sick to me stomach. After the game released I never understood why naughty dog made the game the way it is...to this day I still don't understand, what's worse is the fact some of my friends thinks is a great game (more power to them) but I don't think they'll fully understand the disappointment I had when watching the credits play....
Ill be honest the tlou2 leaks saved a lot of us 60 plus dollars, The gta 6 leaks were just confirmation of what was suspected and the insomniac leak was devastating damage to the company
@@TheActMan holy shit I didn’t think you’d actually reply, I love your videos man, the first video of yours I watched was why dark souls is a masterpiece, it’s my favorite video of yours, perhaps even my favorite. Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing your rdr2 stream this weekend
I love that this man gets to do an ad for a TV after the stuff he went though. Love The Flex lol Keep up the great work as always Act Man. Can't wait till the next one.
Something I won't ever forgive about the last of us 2 leaks was how it fractured the fanbase. The leaks made so many people very angry. Not just because it spoiled the game for us, but because it was a story we didn't find to be very good. Which is would later the thing I wouldn't forgive the game for doing. The leaks caused a fracture, but the game itself completely split the fans in half. The Last Of Us 2 single handedly ruin my feelings towards any future Last Of Us related media. Shout out to Fat Geralt tho
I remember there being an interview where Neil said that some fans of the first game may like the second game and some may not. In a way he was warning us about what this story could be.
@@Aiman-yu6qg It's almost like he should've listened to testers instead of firing them when they kept telling him they didn't like Abby and they didn't like his attempt to pivot the franchise to center on her.
i accully appreciate what they tried to do with the story, i feel it was very impactfull.... BUT, a big BUT, He should have never done this story with this franchies... druckman should have made a new IP, most people wanted to see if ellie really was imune and her journey to finding out. Also while i really liked the game and yes the thought behind the story, what i really disliked was how much plotarmor alot of characters had in situations they should have been dead in... And most important, the theme was just to damn heavy. it is a videogame after all, need to be fun.
I think what threw people off the most about the Naughty Dog leak was not how big or controversial it was regarding Joel, but how Sony and Naughty Dog responded. Copy-Right Strikes against ANYONE who even discussed the leaks, without even showing them. Creating a new trailer that shows Ellie talking to Joel but in the game the conversation was with a completely different character thereby creating false advertising, and even Neil Druckman personally attacking fans of the franchise who didn't like the direction the game was going based on the leaks. It wasn't just the magnitude of the leak that was shocking, it was how over the top Sony and Naughty Dog were in response to them.
@@NoName...... To the point of copy-right striking channels that don't even show anything from it? Just mentioning it? That is over the top and way beyond the pale.
They didn't just change around who Ellie was talking to, they also went ahead and took one of the Flashback Cutscenes, changed both Ellie and Joel's character models from their younger flashback selves, to their current day models, to indicate Joel was still alive. Not even Metal Gear Solid 2 and it's Raiden/Snake switch up did that, I know, cause those who defend this move, all seem to use that example, but it still doesn't compare.
@@chriswihulu Exactly! They knowingly engaged in false advertising to try and say the leaks were wrong all the while knowing that once the game came out it would prove the leaks were correct.
I find deliciously ironic that one of the most important TV Manufacturers like LG is sponsoring The Act Man's channel and not some other "TV Reviewer" channel very well known by this community. I am so happy that your channel is alive and well. PEACE!
In the physical space, Magic the Gathering suffered some pretty nasty leaks in the past year. Both spoiled major story moments from an anticipated arc and were partly due to retailer or logistical negligence. However, one of the leaks resulted in Magic's publisher (Wizards of the Coast) siccing Pinkerton agents on a youtuber who shared images of upcoming cards (from March of the Machine: Aftermath) he shouldn't have had. The Pinkertons ended up barging into his home, scaring his wife, and taking the cards before giving the youtuber a number to call. Wizards acted like absolutely nothing happened and went about the markerting schedule for the card set as planned.
Plot leak aside, the marketing surrounding TLOU Part II was just so insanely manipulative and dishonest. Fabricating scenes and character models for the trailers means that you *know* your product won’t sell half as well if people know what it’s really about.
@@delta2ish Kojima was actively trying to kill the MGS franchise since MGS2, and he has not been shy about that. Probably not the smartest idea to try and emulate a guy trying to find the neck on the studio so he can get it fit for a noose.
@@delta2ish narrative vise maybe, but they didn't alter any of their in-game cutscenes or slip in scenes that make it appear as if a character has a role, when they're actually dead. Dick move, but not the same.
I personally don’t believe TLoU PII would have been received better if the leaks never happened because Abby’s part of the story is boring as hell and is manipulative as hell. Bad writing is still bad writing, even if it’s leaked before release
My favorite leak comes from the world of sports. NHL jerseys have had their own leaking problems, often someone at a manufacturer taking a photo of a prototype or the first line of jerseys. But the weirdest was when the Seattle Kraken's Winter Classic jersey for this year got leaked, because it was leaked by... the Utah Jazz. An NBA team with no affiliation with the Kraken, did a photoshoot of some of their players arriving to a game in the new Kraken jerseys.
Great video, as per usual. Was half expecting to hear about pokemon leaks for games like sun/moon. (those were pretty nuts in terms of fan base reactions if memory serves correctly) Also... smh I can't believe our boi decided to review TVs, such a *quantum* leap from what I've come to expect from him
Funny how The Last of Us 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are both extremely similar games trying to deliver a similar message while trying to improve on what the first game did and its legacy. Red Dead Redemption 2 made it. It made the whole series more successful than it was. The Las of Us 2, didn't, it gave a worse perception of the series destroying what it had, both talking about revenge and using their iconic characters to tell a shocking story...
I remember when the story got leaked for the last of us 2, people got mad because how the story was gonna go I did not see anything cause i didn’t want to spoil myself. I bought it to see it for myself and I am still waiting for my $60 dollars back (I know I will never get it back) Then Sony was prohibiting people to talk about the second half of the story. I did not finish it cause I was offended
I remember playing TLOU1 and finishing it in like 2013, and thinking oh man, Imma buy that PS4 TLOU2 bundle when it comes out. I was so excited. And then the leaks happened. I never bought a PS4. I recently bought a PS5. Never played TLOU2. Funny how that works.
Imagine working on a game that is so different from anything anyone in the industry had ever seen, only to find out that your studio is now owned by an investor that doesn't know a thing about the art, but still expects you to pull in 7-figures year over year with advancement in the growth.
Who cares i would just use it to create even more hype for a game,as a company i would even "create" a leak and put the best gameplay or some wild reveal that would shock the players.
I think leaks do a lot less harm than publishers think. Unless the playable version of the finished product is leaked or the game is destined to be divisive. For example I think the HL2 leak had absolutely no negative effect on the game's sales while the TLoU2 leak saved a lot of people from one of gaming's worst bait and switch which is a good thing.
The only people who give a shit are marketing people and fuck those guys anyway. Like what was the WIP GTA6 leak going to show anyway? OMG! Its an open world game with shooting an carjacking in it! What an eye opening experience! :/ And then theres the Insomniac leak which just showed everyone how much journalists and youtubers shill for Sony. "Oh the Insomniac leak is so terrible! We shouldnt talk about it too much because they are more than just developers. They are OUR FRIENDS!" Wow, if only they felt the same way for the Capcom, M$, and NVIDIA leaks.... *rolls eyes* It just puts into perspective how corrupted and incestuous the gaming media landscape has become. Like Hollywood media basically, theyre just so much in bed with each other, how can we take their reviews and insights into gaming seriously when its this obvious how much they shill for each other?
@@TheActMan yo of course man, it always makes my day better to see one of your streams or videos go up! Hyped for the red dead 2 review finally to come out and maybe a lil gta 6 video… but who knows who knows.

Yeah he reverse engineered into Uber's official slack and servers I think, and had full control but he didn't make anything that would've put him in danger tho.
Since I never really followed GTA as a game, the trailer drop actually WAS big news for me and my friends. But I can understand how that kid ruined it for others, not to mention the commercial damage.
@@Mr_Callahanthere are sex scenes in a bunch of games. People aren't sh*tting on it because it was in TLOU2 They are sh*tting on it because it was terrible.
@@rohegarcia2802 It was terrible because it was poorly written and made very little sense. It seems like it was added because "Game of Thrones does it 😥" On top of being an awful continuation of the story the gameplay is barely an improvement on the original, which, let's be honest was good not great. More to the point having two ugly characters have sex for no reason and with no consequenses does not a compelling story make. Too many people ask this "why was it bad specifically?" question when it's blatantly obvious and there have been nearly 4 years worth of reviews explaining it in detail. Like it or not people have good reason to not like this terrible sequel
@@AColonDashSix How exactly was it poorly written? Everything is explained and developed through 25 hours. The gameplay is also way better. Adding an evade function and prone completely changed up the feel from the first game. Also, they had sex because they liked each other? Many games have way more sex that is added for no reason and no one complains. Lastly, stating that there is 4 years of people complaining about the game, when there is equally as many videos defending it doesn’t help your case. The game is divisive, sure, but it’s in no way an objectively bad game.
It doesn’t help TLOU2’s reputation when Naughty Dog false marketed Joel will join Ellie’s journey in trailer and the stiff writing how Joel get caught easily
I really think you should've talked about the Capcom leaks alongside the Insomniac leak due to just how similar and harmful those leaks were to the company and it's employees
My favorite leak was the Yakuza 6 demo. Sega accidentally uploaded the full game instead of just the demo and had to quickly remove it before reuploading the demo at a later date.

The Last of Us Part 2 leaks was I think the most outraged people had ever been on the internet.

A lot of the leaks were from the devs too I believe who were fed up with the working conditions at naughty dog.
and it will never stop being hilarious.....Even more so with the imbeciles who cried about Abbey and a "sex scene" that was literally 10 seconds of a cut scene and you never see anything else. Yet the game still sold 11 million copies.

For halo 4. They rebuilt old devkits that had the red ring that had been sent to a landfill. Got the consoles working again, then gained access to "partnernet" which basically was XBL for devs and gave them access to builds across the entire industry of unreleased games.

Of course sony would take action on A COMPLETE STORY LEAK to one of their BIGGEST GAMES.
@@NoName...... To the point of copy-right striking channels that don't even show anything from it? Just mentioning it?
That is over the top and way beyond the pale.
Yeah I forgot to mention that they did that! Good point

Red Dead Redemption 2 made it. It made the whole series more successful than it was.

*rolls eyes*
It just puts into perspective how corrupted and incestuous the gaming media landscape has become. Like Hollywood media basically, theyre just so much in bed with each other, how can we take their reviews and insights into gaming seriously when its this obvious how much they shill for each other?
Its an artistic integrity thing
