    Finally checking out the latest update to the Dygma Raise. It was a great product when it first arrived some months back but so many keyboard reviews meant I never really had time to learn the board. Now its back with some improvements and user experience is seriously impressive.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab 3 роки тому +25

      @@andrewy2830 Glad to hear that you think our product is cool! We think so too 😎
      We basically started by studying how traditional keyboards are and looked at how we could design one that was more ergonomic and comfortable for the user. We must remember that the keyboard’s design came from the typewriter and they were invented over 150 years ago. So the keyboard’s design is really outdated and isn’t designed to fit people’s needs.
      We wrote down the benefits we wanted for our keyboard. From there, we worked on the features that could provide those benefits. A 60% keyboard was ideal if we wanted people to minimize doing unnecessary hand movements. Not needing to take your hand away from the home-row is definitely more comfortable and can speed up your workflow.
      The palm rests and palm pads was a must if we wanted to promote a neutral angle when using the keyboard. This will prevent wrist extension and overall fatigue when typing/coding/gaming. Having it split helps prevent ulnar deviation and can allow you to open up your chest more when typing, and not slouch.
      Tilting a traditional full-size keyboard sideways when gaming is really not ideal. Positioning your hand at a weird angle can cause a lot of injuries. This is evident in many pro esports players. That’s why with the Raise you are able to remove one half and just use the other for gaming. It allows you to have more space for your mouse and we also call it the anti-flame mode 😂
      The 8 thumbkeys - well I think that’s been something that many big brands have completely overlooked. The thumbs are our strongest finger and the space bar occupies too much space. Maximizing our thumbs was a no-brainer.
      With our configurator software, Bazecor - being able to remap all the keys, create layers and different RGB effects per layer, and create shortcuts and macros is what makes using this unique and minimalistic keyboard really come to life.
      It was a lot of trial and error. A lot of iterations. A lot of delays. A lot of back and forth with the community asking for their feedback. But all of those endeavors have resulted in what Brian has just shown us in his video 😁

    I've been using ergonomic keyboards since the mid 90s, and I have looked at several (and bought a few) during quarantine. I have some thoughts to share.
    The best ergo keyboard ever made was the Datadesk SmartBoard. I will die on that hill. Alps SKCM black switches; ortholinear key layout with slightly wider pinkie keys; 1800 compact layout; tented; negative tilt; attached wrist rest. The biggest adjustment I had using it was the repositioned = key, which they put at the top left. Sadly, they are no longer made, and I have yet to find anything like it. I hope mine never dies (which is why I keep a spare in my closet).
    I bought an X-Bows but had a hard time adapting to it. Its keys fan out as they move away from the home row, but since the (alpha and most of the number) keys are all the same width, the gap between the keys increases as they fan out. I also did not like the aggressive shift on the pinky columns (Q, A, Z, P, semicolon), and I found myself missing keystrokes.
    I bought an ErgoDox EZ Glow, and I built a Keebio Iris. I like them both and had no trouble adjusting to them. The ErgoDox is quite thick, though, and the Wing wrist rests do not tent. They just sit flat on your desk. This is my biggest problem with the ErgoDox EZ. However, I much prefer the 1.5u pinkie keys on the ErgoDox EZ over the 1u pinkie keys on the Iris. On the other hand, pretty much any ortholinear keycap set fits my Iris.
    A tented keyboard needs an attached wrist rest that matches the angle of the keyboard. The Matias Ergo Pro, Kinesis Freestyle Edge RGB, and Ultimate Hacking Keyboard do it. The Moonlander has a solution. The Dygma Raise looks like it is a solid product with nice aesthetics and a familiar layout. The bottom row looks better than the two buttons in the UHK's bottom frame. Dygma just announced a tenting kit on their channel yesterday, so hopefully that will come out soon.

      I'm currently typing on an ergo Iris build and I can confirm this, I have limited desk space and having just one half allows me to perform better in games due to the increased mousepad area. Also typing is a lot more comfortable for my right pinky finger

      @@hippie_4762 Thumb buttons are the best. I have my left thumb for space and right thumb for enter.
      You have to build it yourself but Quefrency is much cheaper, it has 2 thumb buttons for each hand.
      You can also get an ultimate hacking keyboard which around the same price but it has an even crazier thumb cluster options.(You can even add a trackball to your thumb position, so you don't eve need a mouse)
      There might be other brands out there with standard layout split+thumb buttons but these are the only ones I know

    my Raise is my prized possession, I'm in love with this board. The 8 bar is nasty. I can't emphasize how incredible having crouch, jump, sprint, etc at your thumb is for mobility. And when typing for extended periods, being able to lean back in my chair with the keys inches away from my armrests is a godsend for carpal tunnel. It's an incredibly comfortable board to use. Only issue is the price; so if you have problems learning touch-typing, don't value ergonomics, or don't see yourself getting creative with the 8bar and layouts it probably aint for you (which the Dygma CEO goes out of his way to express, a stand up move imo). Or if you're just trying to ball out, get it. Def a head turner.

  • @flamingsasuke

    Over the summer, I knew I wanted to get a split keyboard and so I looked into it a lot of options. After a while I decided to go with the Dygma for many of the reasons you have said in the video. The Dygma team is fantastic. They are super active on their own subreddit and are always so kind to work with. I recently just broke a component on my PCB because I was forcing in my Kailh box switches in and it actually broke the hotswap component. After sending an email to their support team they gave me the option to buy a new PCB since breaking the PCB voids the warranty. Additionally they even offered the option of me sending them my Raise and doing the replacement themselves ( no additional costs, just pay more shipping). This is incredibly nice of them and I think it really shows that they are out here doing their best to make sure the customer is happy with their products.
    As for the raise itslef, its my new daily driver. I love using it. I added a slight tilt to the back because I personally prefer having a higher typing angle. The only other part that I am not too big a fan of is the fact that you have to leave both sides plugged in even if you only use one. It does work with only one plugged in, but if you unplug one half for too long then when you try to plug it back in, it will not work. Then you have to unplug and replug in the whole neuron to make it work again. Its a minor detail, but since I have limited space it would have been nicer to unplug the left side and put it away rather than just putting it away for a bit
    TLDR: Love this keyboard, its really fantastic. Dygma is a really great company that really cares about their customers and they do their best to ensure the best experience

      If I remember correctly, he reviewed the OLKB Preonic about a year ago. With that being said, I do hope he reviews one or two other Ortholinears, as they are fantastic for ergonomics and debatably very easy to replace keycaps on....so long as you are fine with blank modifiers. I suspect one more akin to the size of a typical 60%, like a 15x5, would be much more manageable in terms of physical keys available, although they are virtually unavailable unless you get them as a kit.

      @@chickenpasta7359 To be honest I don't think it's nearly as hard to learn as most people say. I also have the same bad habits as him where I use the wrong fingers to hit the lower row on staggered, and about an hour of typing practice fixed that for me when I just got my planck. Programming and general numbers/symbols took a while longer, but after a week I got those down too. If you really dedicate yourself to it and don't use any other keyboard, you learn pretty fast. I think it's the fact that reviewers have the mindset of "well if I don't like it or don't wanna learn I always have like 100 different keyboards that I can use," whereas when I built my planck, I knew this was what I would be stuck with for the next 5 years at least.

    I have the v1 version from the Kickstarter and haven't looked back since. I did have an issue that developed after a few weeks and their customer service was amazing.
    I had an issue where the 5 key on the left side started to not respond, I contacted Dygma and they offered me a few options. They were out of stock at the time of contact for full boards, so I could:
    1. Wait for them to get more stock in and send it back then for a full replacement.
    2. They could send me out a spare left side PCB that I could replace myself. They gave me a written description of what I would need to do and even offered to guide me through it via video chat, although the process was as simple as removing a few screws and watching out for a ribbon cable.
    I took option 2 and had my board fully functioning in less than 5 days.
    The board overall has been amazing for me. It's fixed my bad typing skills (I also would often use B and Y with the opposite hands - this was fixed within 10 days of using it as my daily driver).
    I also have mine split especially far apart with a 3rd party longer USB C - USB C cable. I have the left side on the left of my 900x400mm mouse mat and the right side off of the mat entirely to give myself a huge amount of mouse space as I predominantly use it for FPS games. I can't wait to try the tilting system they're working on and honestly can't see myself ever using another keyboard (unless they bring out a version with F keys, as I do still miss having dedicated keys for functions).

    So happy to have seen this. I believe I had seen the board originally on this channel a while ago (somewhere in the background). I went ahead and pre-ordered the V2 and have been rocking it since I believe September. I found that I too had bad typing habits and the learning process was less than a week. I work and game from the same station and I've never been more comfortable while I work. I had two issues and one was directly related to me. My initial delivery came with flex on my left half of the board. This flex offered a small bounce and it wasn't noticeable as I use a large desk mat. Their customer support was really quick to help resolve the issue. The second is updating the neuron. You really need to pay attention to the steps to ensure you update it. Very minor but could help to have better wording. Again, this could simply be a ME issue.

    LOOVE my Raise. Its a gen 2. I just unplug the right side altogether when I'm gaming. Having 4 buttons under the thumb is a life-saver, adds so much functionality. Here is an interesting thing: I use the bottom two buttons as left and right, the upper left thumb button as up, and caps lock as down. This is actually super useful, to be able to navigate text and code using only my left hand MID-TYPING, rather than take my hands off the keyboard and operate the mouse. Feels a bit awkward at first, but once you get the hang of it, its super nice. Also I just never use capslock, so had no problem rebinding it.
    In addition, pretty much all games recognize the arrow keys as bindable keys, so I can bind things like "armor plate" in Warzone, or "ping", and I can cover all game actions using only the one side of the keyboard. The only negative I've experienced so far is sometimes when I unplug just the right side, the board freezes and becomes unresponsive, until I unplug the center link thing. Overall though, I have been very happy with it. Typing with my arms spread feels much more natural and easy on my back muscles than typing with my hands so close together too.

    I preordered the raise back in the day, and I've gotta say; the customer support was exceptional.
    Sure they're a new company, and of course they cant make miracles happen. But in regards to communication they have been flawless. Apart from the normal annoying "when is my keyboard coming" spam, I had an email correspondence with Dominique, where she went in depth with the keycap sizes, which exact keys were low-profile etc. She even provided a picture of the layout (in my case ISO) with the unit size of each individual key, including the spacebars.
    Now you could just watch this video, but back in July 2019 this was everything i could ask for.
    Their website is super transparent, and their customer support treated me personally with the same transparency and professionalism,

    Great review of a great keyboard. Only thing you missed mentioning, which was important for me, is that each half of the Raise is independent. So when gaming, I disconnect the right half and tuck it away. Gives me so much more room for my mouse to move. Also, with the board split at should width, there is plenty of room for mousing in between the two halves. So no reaching out to the right causing stress on the neck and shoulder. People complain of the price, but if you look at custom keebs these days, it's honestly very fairly prices for the quality and benefits you get.

    Biggest adjustment was remapping the random keys most games have on the right hand side of the board. When I’m gaming, I just scoot the right side away unless I need to type something. But even using layers in games is simple. If you get passed the touch typing (I was in the same with Y and B crossovers) the ergo side really relaxes your shoulders and wrists. Move your mouse between them and you’ll feel it in your wrists. They won’t be achey.

    proud owner of the v1 right here and I love it!! all the updates are legit and as a demanding user with no biases except using the keyboard I can tell you right now that I'm picking up an additional one in the future.
    Thing I like
    - quality of the build
    - responsiveness (switching between layers NEVER hicks up) and bug free
    -FUNCTIONALITY!! every game... having 3 (or 4 if you scroll jump) macros super close and comfy right under your thumb is incredible! Having 8 (!!) macros when editing or writing or anything is also amazing
    BTW just managed to map the windows sound mixer to a layer so I can super easily isolate or increase/decrease the volume right on the keyboard. (Y)
    Really recommend it

    How did you find the palm rests, wondering if they slip around or adhere well? I remember seeing it lifting on some others boards.
    Board is good value imo, only one on the market that I am aware of that does not require two cables between the units and given it’s a niche within a niche you have to pay if it ticks your boxes

      The rests are solid. I hear they had some issues with the early versions and they started going with a new supplier. They've been really solid for me so far.

    Brian is worried about gaming with a split 60% meanwhile I'm playing WoW on my Atreus without a numrow or outer column. Don't let your memes be dreams!
    Also columnar stagger is way comfier than row stagger once you get used to typing on it, the Ergodox EZ is way too big and has an awkward thumb cluster that some people have reported pain after using for extended periods, the Moonlander isn't too bad and has an adjustable thumb cluster gimmick, and the real stuff is going to be the Iris rev. 5 (factory-soldered with hotswap sockets) and the Elora (a Kyria with a numrow and factory hotswap sockets).
    But this stuff all pales in comparison to a Dactyl anyway. You can actually reach the F-keys without moving your wrist on those.
    If you want to learn touch-typing I suggest The Typing of the Dead.

    As someone who is currently typing on a split staggered custom which can connect together to form a full board (a Keebio Quefrency Rev. 2), the Raise is definitely really quite special due to the fact that it has a really interesting split spacebar design that I am a huge fan of and it's full alu case design is incredible given the costs of manufacturing this thing have to be astronomically high.
    The things that bother me about it is the price (which is a given but is also a crying shame that people have to pay so much more for ergo, but understandable given it's machining two pieces together), and the design of the Neuron. On the Quefrency or any other split, it simply connects by a TRRS cable (a 3.5mm receiver-receiver cable) or some other cable to both halves, then you can connect either half to the host device. This has two advantages, first being the fact that 3.5mm cables can get REALLY long or REALLY short depending on how far apart your arms rest. And secondly, if a TRRS cable goes bad, they're really easy to replace Honestly, it doesn't make any sense to have another 2 points of failure along the way (3 cables + Neuron vs 2 cables).
    Honestly, I think for what it is the Raise looks amazing. And as a fan of Deilor's past with Fnatic, I really want to love it. But the price range is just absurd to me, and the neuron as yet another thing that I have to have working to get a functional split layout is just a bit too much for me.

    • @eldelacajita
      @eldelacajita 3 роки тому

      I think the Neuron is a great design decision. It is where all the config is stored, and allows to plug and config any side without the other. It doesn't give you any additional issues. You can use cables of different lengths on either side, and it even unlocks a unique feature: you can have two (or more) different Neurons for the same keyboard, enabling very differentiated sets of 10 layers. For example, you can leave one Neuron permanently connected at work, and another one at home, configured for different workflows and OSes.

    The thumb keys are super cool! Having 4 keys additionally to Alt you can use with the thumb is awesome. This has bothered me about normal keyboards ever since I started playing R6 siege where when you just use the default keys your thumb does literally nothing most of the time.
    How easy did you find it to accidentally hit the lower keys when pressing the upper keys there?

    • @badseedtech
      @badseedtech  3 роки тому +4

      Yeah I'm really digging it for that. And its actually really easy to avoid pressing the wrong row because they are tiered so hard. It goes from standard switch and cap down to low pro switch and like a chicklet cap. Took zero time to adjust to and its so nice having the extra remaps there.

As far as the Kaihl Silent Box Pink switches go, their customer service is really top notch, so if you dont see them as an order option you can order your keyboard, then immediately email them about your order to make sure they send you the Box Pinks instead of whatever placehilder you configured the Raise with on the "Build Your Dagmar Raise" page

    • @badseedtech
      @badseedtech  3 роки тому

      I used to, but its about 75% written to 25% off the top now. The main reason I went that way was so I could stop memorizing as many lines. I only used a prompted for a couple vids a LONG time ago and hated it - felt really unnatural both to me and to the viewer. Started scripting so I'd know ahead of time exactly what I had to deliver to camera. Usually the cutaway to the alternate set now is off the top - just going in with a bullet point. I think this is how I'll roll for awhile bc it adds a nice break for the viewer - like a "real talk" section mid presentation. Also makes it REALLY easy to punch in something I got wrong or needed to expand on in the final edit.

    I got my Raise today, and so far I really like it. Sadly my typing speed has dropped from 50 to 25 WPM as I picked up some poor touch typing habbits in the last 30 years! I really like the design and the ability to keep both halves at shoulder width and being able to angle both halves to exactly match the angle of my hands. It feels unusual at first, but I'm gonna stick with it. This is also my first 60% kbd which will also take some getting used to. The quality of the RGB diffusers is fantastic too. Glad I went with this one. I may eventually try out the Moonlander as well, but I need to get used to this one for a few months first at least.

      Nothing wrong with it. Especially at that price. The wireless is the selling point over the other 60%.
