@@badseedtech Could you compare the Air58 to the Hati? I'm really struggling and i kinda don't want to spend 250 Bucks on a Air58 if the Hati is very Similar but i'm afraid that the Hati is very different.
Love that things from olkb are becoming a little more mainstream now. Yet to order an ortho board myself but really looking forward to adding one to my collection.
Check out the Niu Mini from KBDfans, bought one a couple of weeks ago and fell in love. The integrated plate is awesome and you can't beat the price. It does require soldering to put together though, but it was real easy.
Tieto soldering is no worries for me- I have several customs already. ;) yeah that is def an option unfortunately I have like 2 builds I wanna do before it :(
When you're putting it together you can add LEDs. Mine just came in yesterday. More space for FPS games and after learning, it's easier to hit all the keys imo. Number row is wayyy easier to hit. Straight up and down. LOVE IT.
Sweet review! I'm happy to see you didn't stay with the default switches nor the default key caps. Those two switch-em-ups made the review that little bit more awesome.
I've seen your mouse reviews before, and I really like them. I had no idea you were into custom mechs. Happy to see you know your stuff in this department that I am passionate about.
good point about the learning curve for the XDA profile being uniform, I was introduced with DSA and it was a lot easier to get used to typing on the smaller more concave faces. Just switched to ZDA which seems to just be a slightly taller XDA, the surface requires more precise force compared to the ease of DSA, new learning curve.
Think about this -- Rotate it so that it's vertical and use that as a gaming keyboard. WASD near the bottom with room for space, alt, ctrl etc. I'm buying a gherkin kit for this reason. I want to try and see if I can make it work.
60% keyboard user here. Two main reasons to get a small keyboard (50% / 60%) are that 1. the keys come to you, and 2. you can configure the layout exactly how you want it. Be warned though: Learning to use such a keyboard efficiently takes time, as does finding the right layout for you. You may get a long way with whatever default layout comes with your keyboard, but if you're going through the trouble of learning to use a 50% / 60%, you should probably spend some time learning how to configure it as well, seeing as your exact needs will almost certainly NOT be met perfectly by the default layout. I use the split ergonomic keyboard "Iris" (Rev. 4) from Keebio. It is configured using qmk.
A few years back, I built a Preonic. The layers were fine, at least after I reconfigured them (more on that in a bit). I made too many typos typing on it. I have so many years experience touch typing on a standard stagger, I could not adjust to the ortholinear nature. Still, ortholinear is probably better than a standard stagger layout for your left hand. A Katana60 is probably better yet. The default layers on a Preonic are the same as the smaller Planck, so if you were thinking of switching to the smaller size, you could transition easier. If you are going to use the Preonic as is, you are probably better off remapping the layers to follow more a layout similar to a 60%. Have your number row be your F-row. Map you navigation keys to wherever they make sense. I even had setup arrows on WASD, and had a number pad on a layer, that I never used.
This video convinced me to obtain one ortholinear. Unfortunately, Preonic had been usually out of stock but I'm very satisfied with a dna59 keyboard I ordered. I think it's more appropriate for typing and gaming because of its small size than science productivity, coding etc. though this is rather subjective. Definitely it's a fun keyboard for novice or experienced computer users.
Nice breakdown, I do have to say though, a 5 row board that has multiple keys you can access with your thumb, in a more natural grid alignment with single width pinky column + short width so you can have maximum mousepad space seems like it would be pretty good for gaming :)
I would instantly buy that thing and throw in some Khail box pinks if I could afford it. The hot-swap PCB, included keycaps (if you choose 'em), and the overall layout... Man, I'd really love to get my hands on a smaller than 60% layout. Looks really nice for portability and I'd love to see how the ortholinear layout feels. Luckily I started out typing with the posture they'd teach you in a class, so I've got a lot more options, but uh... Poor at the moment, so no keyboard for me. :(
You are the best reviewer, ever ! Honestly ! I go to sleep with you videos! Relaxing, Interesting, Entertaining ! You're awesome ! More people should see those vids, you're making. C'moooon UA-cam Algorithmmmm !!!!!!!!!!!!!
on the contrary, i much prefer ortho boards for gaming, having that compact bottom row, closer access to ctrl, shift, alt, having a layer i can quickly use to swap 12345 with 67890 for MMORPG's, the num keys being straight above the fingers rather than diagonal to wasd, i find that it works much better in my experience
Extremely interesting keyboard, I've always been interested in a "55%" staggered board, with something like a 65% layout but with shorter mods to squeeze it in a smaller space. To my knowledge nothing like this exists and I'm in college so I'm to broke to get into developing my own pcbs. One can dream though.
I know you’ve done a lot of keyboard content lately BUT this one is good. You should take a peep at the DZ65rgb from kbdfans. It has smd rgb (on the bottom though not the top but still good) and is HOTSWAP! Might be similar to the alt but it can support your Zeal PCB stabs and PCB mount switches!
I am fully expecting to know what that blue mouse is. It looks like the Hati had a baby with the Zowie, which seems like the thing you would hop right on top of.
With regards to sound dampening, made some changes to mind that make it sign. I used a glue gun to put some on the standoffs on the case to put slight gap between it and the PCB.. taped the back of the PCB with painters tape, and got rid of that aluminum plate. I printed my own in PC and another in carbon fiber / PETG blend.. stayed with the latter because my PC was a bitch to work with and they sounded the same anyway. I've not found FR4 or another plate for this in the market.
I know this review is at least a few years old but are there more modern boards like this? I currently use an Ergodox EZ but I'm really looking to ditch the wire or have maybe a single wire but I really like the ortholinear layout but I am struggling to find something that will work for me. I really like the Ergodox EZ but I'm ready to see what might be out there. I'm willing to try out different things ut I really like moving my fingers as little as possible to type all my messages out and one of the best things for me is out of the box the Ergodox pretty much gets me moving as minimally as I have been and it has removed all the pain I was having so I been trying to shop for a Mechanical keyboard that can mimic that layout :D any help would be huge!
I have small hands and a normal keyboard (60%+) feels big to me. I want to try this but sadly I can't seem to find bluetooth/wireless ortholinear keyboards anywhere! I move stuff around my desk a lot so I have to have a wireless keyboard. xD
Not sure if you do amazon buys still but can you do a review on the KEMOVE keyboard? Comes with gateron switches, usb c, and software for rgb for 50 bucks.
HI @badseed tech! I was wondering what is your opinion on the RAMA key puller. I recently got my CTRL keyboard and I am having a lot of trouble pulling out the switches with the stock switch puller. I broke the housing of two switches. Any tips or advice when removing the switches from the CTRL keyboard? I'm using Zeal's sakurios and roselios switches. Would the RAMA switch puller be more effective removing switches compare to the stock switch puller from Drop CTRL?
I actually destroyed SEVERAL Gat Inks with the RAMA puller. I love the shape but I think the metal is too soft. I honestly prefer the puller that comes with the ALT/CTRL and use it for every switch now.
How are you faring with adjusting to the keyboard layout and wpm? I just swapped to an ergodash with dsa keycaps last week and .... oof its a rough start but it feels so good.
I feel ya. I specifically waited months for this over the Planck EZ. The number row helps for (some) gaming and are so easy to hit. Jack Humbert (I'm pretty sure he makes it) might be understanding and let you take it back if you buy the Preonic Rev3. You never know.
hi, i have been looking for rgb leds for my preonic, but i can't find any that are compatible with the pcb that comes included, do you know of any rgb leds that can be installed?
Why not a gaming keyboard though? The wasd position looks pretty natural to me, just like the positioning of the arrow keys. I think it's just a matter of getting used to it.
"Let's go" is always so hype
thanks for the heart bad seed, and btw this is the most likes I've ever got on a comment lol thanks
Reasons i subbed:
•the voice
•the beard
Great vid 👍
beard is 💯👌🏿
i wonder how many subs he would lose if he shaved.
Dude....TONS. Not a chance I'm willing to take. 😅

LOL
Chozo Ghost I had to try to not spit my drink when I saw that lol it caught me off guard
honestly tho it's impossible to not love this guy

How do you not have millions of subs yet??? You’ll get there with this content and info thanks man

I f*cking love the distinct style you put into your videos

I actually really like gaming on an ortho
Me too!
Same here. I usually work an type on a standard 60% but break out the Preonic when gaming.
I have been looking for a ortholinear keyboard for gaming. I want to try this
I also game on my Preonic. I find I prefer it over my "gaming" keyboard now.
i type and game better on ortho :/ lol

Ortho? MechMarket? You've ventured down the rabbit hole of custom mechanical keyboards my friend...Niceeeee
50% damn takes up 100% of my mouse pad
So close to 100k your killing it man!!

Yup, could definitely use some sound dampening mod also good job, love the build! Even I'm not ready for some ortholinear boards.
Love every video you drop cant get enough keep em coming
btw i use XD75RE for my daily keyboard. Even use it for gaming
The layout is not a problem at all. It's just about habit
Great video, man

Again, an amazing video. No bullshit, going straight into it. Entertaining but learnable. Keep up the vids Brian :)
I use it for gaming honestly works pretty well, use the two extra keys by the space bar for extra key binds.

Saw this on mass drop and thought who would ever use this, but now it makes sense.
I finally ordered one to go along with my OLKB Planck. The kit is on sale this week (8/15/22) for $119. It should be fun.
New follower to the channel but brilliant content. Love your b roll footage and overall presentation.
Shot in the dark here, but you wouldn't happen to be selling those keycaps, would you? the damn and other color mod keys in specific.
As a programmer, I'm scared of the 40% ortholinears. but this one I gotta try!

Fucking epic. No WOrds needed. Subscribed. Appreciate your style man you lit!
How many videos are you putting out in those days man? Keep up the good job!
Twice a week is the minimum now 💪
Is that Hati a Custom job or are we in for a surprise ? :D
Pretty sure its on Amazon right now actually

Hey man. Just curious after seeing your hands, do you have vitiligo? Feel free to not answer of course, but i do too! Love the vid and the channel!
I do, yeah! Had it since I was 15
Did someone dare you get into Tech UA-cam to make as many double entendres as possible? Because you are winning this bet.
Its my life's mission.
Hello! the Preonic is very nice. But where do you get the Mito key kit you showed on the video? thank you
I am fully expecting to know what that blue mouse is. It looks like the Hati had a baby with the Zowie, which seems like the thing you would hop right on top of.
it is a hati, they're releasing a bunch of different colours for it, can get the turqoise one right now
at least the title wasn't model d level (loved that one btw bought it bc of u)
The final product looks really cool to me. I'm trying to get a 15x5 (75 keys) but the only one I found was discontinued. Do you know were to find one?

Is that a Zoom H4N? Great vid as well, love the beard
Thanks. And yeah it is. Remarkable piece of kit. I use it for all kinda of stuff.
Preonic is the perfect size for me wish I had the newer version that allowed for dual space bars though, definitely preferred for how I use mine
how do you use 2 space bars?
I thought this was the "Beard" Length edition - great video!

Thumbs up for ortho and flipped spacebar
Awwww yeaaa silent inks. One of my favs.
@badseedtech for a slightly nicer Ortho experience try and get ahold of the XD75RE from kp republic. The layout looks weird but it's real nice to use
I want more keys not. It took me 3 hours but I desoldered the MX brown switches my Corsair k95 and replaced them with Zeal Silent V2. So worth it.
How are you faring with adjusting to the keyboard layout and wpm? I just swapped to an ergodash with dsa keycaps last week and .... oof its a rough start but it feels so good.
Hey i was just wondering if you were able to pre order a ducky year of the pig or if you knew anything about the release on those
I literally just bought the 40% OLKB Planck. God damnit.

Where did you get that giant switch??? I need it in my life 2:39
Game time bois
hi, i have been looking for rgb leds for my preonic, but i can't find any that are compatible with the pcb that comes included, do you know of any rgb leds that can be installed?
This may be a stupid question, but how is this a 50% keyboard, rather than a 60%?
Here before 100k and proud
Is this a good keyboard to use when learning how to play games with a keyboard and mouse?
He looks like what a blacksmith would look like in a video game
@badseed tech will you review Roccat Kain ?
I have been flipping my spacebar forever figured everyone did it
Came for the keyboard stayed for the voice
what’s that space/planet mouse pad you use?
Ortholinear, i love it
Why not a gaming keyboard though? The wasd position looks pretty natural to me, just like the positioning of the arrow keys. I think it's just a matter of getting used to it.
Great Vid
But what mouse was in the background of the sound test.
Hati - HK Gaming edition
chyrosran22's planck review is great. Have a good weekend Brian!
I am interested in trying an ortholinear board, but they aren’t cheap.
Why would It not be a gaming keyboard? is there something wrong when you game on it? asking as a programmer/gamer
50?? I tought 60 was enough xD well seen 40% but still that’s gone too far 😆
I preffer 75% with Fn Keys
Does this keyboard is Mac compatible? Meaning also the keycaps and stuff?
brilliant intro
plus your fucking beard love it - when I check out your other videos you better still have it!
I wonder if the process of learning an alt layout like dvorak on this would be different enough to not interfere with pre established qwerty skills
Straight enthusiast keyboard, no way could I see this at a LAN event lol
Jaypher nothing on drop counts as enthusiast grade... def not keyboards atleast
LETS GO
It just looks like a rectangle for people that hate themselves xd. It does look cool but the layout looks very difficult to learn.
Legit just busted out laughing 😂
Is their any keyboard that is mechanical but also has smaller spacing between keycaps?
Yo! What set are those pink/green caps?
i notice you always have this huge switch prop in your videos. where can i get one? i beg.

Do the keyset come with 2 spacebars as the layout supports it?
Yep
Did u make that it LOOKS DOPE BETTER THEN ANY EVEN TFUES!!!!! Ps GET BADSEEDTECH TO 100K AND THEN 500K THEN 1M THEN 5M THEN 10M THEN 100M! XD
I see a fostex x00 in the background
