Can I Use A Giant Homemade Umbrella as A Parachute?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- I custom built a massive 12 foot umbrella and tested it to find out if it can really work as a parachute! I COULDN’T BELIEVE the results!

Thanks for watching! I hope you’ll check out some other projects and share with your friends! They’re all pretty unhinged 🤫
have you ever herd about parasols?
@ no I had to Google em! Seem to be like very pretty umbrellas?
What pronouns do you use?
You could try adding another layer or two?
Is this guy the American version of Colin Furze? Idk, but I sure as hell hope so 😂
I was curious about some theoretical numbers, so I did some rough calculations. In case anyone is interested, I'll put my process at the end.
I found that falling with that umbrella will give you a terminal velocity of 24mph, the equivalent of falling from a height of 19.5ft normally. That means falling from an airplane with this umbrella would be safer than a 20ft fall, barring equipment failure. You would reach terminal velocity after around 3.2s and 87ft of falling.
Comparing that to a regular falling human, who would have a terminal velocity of 120mph laying flat (200 oriented vertically), and would reach it after 12s and 1500ft of falling. I'd say that's a pretty good improvement.
For some more comparison, an equivalent 5 foot fall would be 5.8ft, 10 = 14.3, 15 = 28.8, 17 = 46.3, 19.5 = 86 to ∞
So you would probably survive from any height, but there's a good chance you break an ankle from 30+ feet, and break your legs from terminal velocity.
It would be cool to see some testing with a dummy and see how close these numbers are (if at all).
Process:
I estimated the drag coefficient to be 1.2, which is about halfway between that of a hemisphere and a disc, and the area to be ~95% of a 12ft circle. I found the drag force equation using F=0.5pv^2AC, and then used that to determine a differential equation to model falling behavior with the umbrella (x''+0.026x'^2-32.2=0). I then ran it through a solver to find equations for a, v, and x, and used simple free fall to determine equivalent impact velocities.
I don't care what anyone else thinks, Math is sexy
dawg this might be one of the coolest videos I’ve ever seen
@@iwantacheesesteak haha thanks brother! It’s my favorite project yet for sure!
It’s a shame you’re not getting more views, this is awesome
Haha well hey you can help us get there! Share it with some friends! But thanks for the support!
@@colicrud just keep up this kind of content dude, its awesome and very personal! Im sure this will blow up soon, and even if it doesnt, the people that do see your stuff enjoy the shit out of it
@ thanks, that really means a lot. I put a ton of work in on them and usually get like 500 views haha but I’ll keep grinding!
I thought he had millions of subscribers
@@StutzandBob haha one day! But I’m glad you see the potential!
Oh what the hell? Your not popular? I thought you had easily 100k+ keep it up man!
Thanks man! I appreciate the support, but there’s lots of room for growth!
"I'd love to see someone try this at home" is so based
😂 just bein honest! Haha hope you enjoyed it!
I have SO MANY QUESTIONS totally unrelated to this umbrella 🤪🤔🤯
OMG TAY you fucking legend! Thanks for watching! You’ve given me and friends a lot of joy I hope I was able to return the favor 🫡
Just discovered this channel. Crafting umbrellas, parkour, ridiculous concepts. Count me in
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the projects and share with your friends! The algorithm gods don’t do me any favors😂 but I really appreciate the support!
hey question: how come you never tried to put your foot in the hook of the cane? i feel like that wouldve allowed for a much more stable grip on the umbrella, and would help keep it in place as you glide down. altho i do recognize that it might make it more difficult to land safely. im just wondering if you ever thought of the idea.
Haha naw that has broken ankle potential BUT I have thought about a backpack/harness 🤔
@@colicrud sounds like an infinitely better idea lol i wish you great luck
@ haha we’ll see but onto a new project next!
Mary poppins style?
@@colicrudor a not so vise idea use the handle to hook on to ur a55, no need for a backpack.
The umbrella makes a bigger difference the further you jump from: without air resistance, you will accelerate forever, but with air resistance, the drag is proportional to the square of the velocity, so the faster you're going the more upwards force you get from the umbrella. I bet your terminal velocity is greatly reduced with the umbrella!
HOW DOES THIS NOT HAVE MORE VIEWS??! this was pretty dang cool!
Haha I need your help!
When I was 5 years old, my buddy and I took turns jumping from his barn loft window- likely 12' or so to the ground. I was a skinny kid, about 35-40 lbs I would guess. I jumped with and without his mom's umbrella. The umbrella flipped "inside out" as you'd expect, but even still, there was a noticeable difference. I imagine just due to how little we were. No one believed me then, but somewhat proportionally/scaled up, this is a similar thing. Very happy to get recommended this vid! Good stuff!
Haha nice thanks! It was a fun one! Wasn’t it great to feel invincible as a kid? Not so much these days lol
This was so entertaining, glad UA-cam recommended me this
Me too!
Will you make a bigger umbrella so you can jump off higher places? Like an actual parachute sized umbrella or would that become too hard to carry? Will you put a rifle inside the umbrella for extra protection?
😂 I like where your mind is at but there will for sure be another umbrella video when the lakes here thaw out next summer so stay tuned!
Give this man his viewers ✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼
I sure as hell need it!
The giant umbrella thumbnail and title are great first hooks. Then the tiny umbrella is an excellent hook right at the first frame of the vid. This vid'll definitely hit 1M since you're at 90K in a month.
Thanks I hope you’re right! lol most my videos I get like 500 views haha but thanks hope you enjoyed it
Is Allen Pan made of bread is a really good question actually
If you know him can you ask? I saw him at opensauce and he looked suspicious
Sadly I don’t, but if he is bread that would mean the xray video was fake. So either he’s bread and a liar, or a real person 🤔
@ yeahhhh I hear he fakes all of his videos so he must be bread 😂
You should sort of "throw" the umbrella up so the handle is above your head then glide down with it. It could catch a gust of wind just before you leap off the ledge and hang all the way holding it above your head
This is what youtube is made for. You are very creative😭
Thanks 🙏🏼
Seeing it actually work made me laugh from joy!
Fantastic! Surely this video will blow up!
Amazing! I’m glad you were able to share that joy!
You need to add a circular disc partway up the handle that juts out to stop your hand from sliding. Maybe one for both hands even. It would be much easier than trying to solely rely on grip strength.
I'd also love to see some analytical tests where you determine actual drag numbers, terminal velocity, etc. to see how much it really slows you down.
Super cool video! This is the kind of thing we all dream of doing as a kid. It's awesome to see it engineered into reality.
Yeah I’m planning some cliff jumps for the summer and will for sure add some little grips to assist with that
Here was me thinking you were one of those big UA-camrs and I looked at only 1.5 thousand subscribers?? You deserve a lot more!
Haha thanks, im just hoping to be able to afford to do this full time one day and appreciate every bit of your support!
@@colicrud Yeah once you hit big will you remember me hehehe
@ haha I gotta meet someone like 3 times before I remember their name unfortunately.
@@colicrud Yeah makes since lol
@@colicrud Considering that the number of subscribers has already gone up to 2.5 thousand subscribers in only 9 days, I would say it is inevitable :)
Best of luck with your youtube channel, I wish you a lot of love, health, wealth, happiness and success :)
You need someone with a climbing wall, the ropes and harnesses for it, and their "OK" to let you experiment slowing your fall. 👍
Suggested videos hit different at 3AM, super underrated channel
Really solid editing and very captivating storytelling. Genuinely thought this was coming from a much larger creator. Just subbed!
Thanks for the support! Glad you enjoyed it and hope you’ll check out some other projects!
You're going places man - excellent video!
I hope they’re good places and not the hospital!
Redbull is writing up contracts for ownership of the sport as we speak.
Lmao where do I get in on that deal??
someones gotta get this man a play button this is extremely high quality keep it up man!
Haha I just want to get 10K subs by the end of this year! Thanks for helping me get there!
You need a full body harness and some sort of weight-assisted falling. (That way, you can jump from let's say 30 feet, someone can have a brake on your line if you're falling too quickly, but you also get to see the stopping force of the umbrella. Like off a climbing wall.) No idea how you'd get the lifting of the harness to not interfere with the umbrella. Maybe maybe the umbrella stem part of the harness somehow?
I like where your head is at. The trick is with the size of the umbrella I would have to be hanging at least 6 feet from the wall. But I do have a climbing robe and harness and you’re giving me some interesting ideas
Definitely a childhood dream 😊 I remember when I was about 10 years old and taking a good beach umbrella down to the sandhills off the coast of south Australia and with a strong wind coming up the dunes getting lifted into the air and landing safely on the sand time and again 🤗
That sounds like a hell of a good time! Hopefully my knees will let me keep actin like a child for a few more years!
@colicrud let's hope 🙏🏻 just remember to make the Wind work for you next time you try. Would make a cool video.
@dandaniels851 yeah i have some fun stuff planned for when that lake thaws out 😈
I can just tell you’re gonna get famous if u keep this up!
I just hope I can do this as a job one day! But thanks so much for the support
Helping the algorithm. Love all your videos man. Don't know why you don't have like 500k subs
Yesss 😂 thank you, I sure need the boost! And I really appreciate it! We’ll get there eventually!
Men i was waiting since your last video to answer this question i realy like your videos
Thanks I really appreciate it! I just hope I can do this full time one day, then I can really push the envelope!
@@colicrud That's a bit lazy isn't it though, all those subscribers eagerly awaiting your next video only to see you push an envelope on a table lol /s
How does this video only have 2k views this is so underrated
Haha well I’ve made a sacrifice to the algorithm gods so hopefully it’ll kick in!
GET THIS MAN SOME MORE VIEWS STAT!!!! This was great!!

I can’t believe it either 😂
Went to subscribe after watching this and am astounded that you dont have more subs. This is quality content my dude, hope you manage to grow the channel!
Thanks man, most of my videos are like a month of work for 500 views so I really appreciate the support! Hope you’ll be along for the ride to 1million!
So wholesome that this guy makes great videos and still finds the time to reply to a bunch of comments. Nice going, man!
Haha thanks! This is my dream job, so I’m doin everything I can! My vids generally don’t do this well so I’m very grateful this one is!
Awesome! You deserve to get more views
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I hope it gets there!
Lol it's like watching an idea I had as a kid come to life! I'm wondering how this would compare to using a super large trash bag.
Well I can tell you one thing, a super large trash bag would be much easier to make 🫣
Realy good video! I know that umbrellas can have a lot of force. When I was small (around 4 years old) I was super light weight and remember that a strong wind put me in the air for a bit. It's really dependant on how heavy the person is I'd say
Beautiful work
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! As everyone else said I expected this video to have like a million views lol
Definitely deserves it!
Thank you so much! I hope you’ll checkout some of my old stuff! They also only got a few hundred views but I promise if you liked this you’ll like them too!
@colicrud will do!
@ bless 🫶🏼 greatly appreciated!
I really thought this got millions of views and was surprised to find it's only 18k as im watching this rn. Praying this vid or your channel gets popular 🙏
You and me both brother thank you!
I can see & hear the difference, how awesome!
Why aren't you putting your foot in the loop? That is the most obvious way to do this given the length of the handle.
I still need my feet free for a clean landing. If I went into water the foot would work. But even though it’s much less there’s still impact to absorb.
I have a technique for jumping like that so it won’t slide at all:
1st put your foot into the little wooden holder
2nd make sure you can balance like this
3rd jump
Damn, only 9k views, how is this guy not popular
Superb craftsmanship, I thought for sure it was going to break.
Haha thanks man! I was quite happy with it!
Well done. Very strong umbrella. You need a rubber grip or a rope knot on the bar to grip. I would also suggest trying to place one foot on the stick curve.
Hey man, this is your knees. Keep doing what you're doing, it rocks and we look forward to retiring early!
😂 my dad’s got 2 fake knees and I’m just hoping they’ll have bionic knees by the time I need new ones
Subscribed instantly !! You gonna hit big man!! Cheers
Thanks for the support!
Bro is gonna become the anime villain with this kind of equipment
😂😂😂 I’m more of a Batman guy myself
Insane quality for a UA-camr your size. I'll be sure to check out your older videos and I've already subscribed. You'll be huge in no time!
Let’s goooo!! Thank you, and please do! I promise they’ll be worth your time haha
This is awesome! Nice work. I’d be really curious how well this would work if you put your foot in the handle and hold the umbrella instead of just holding the umbrella. Wondering if that would make control better or worse?
underrated creator
Thanks for the support!
I fully expect you to collab with some company to make an even bigger umbrella and jump slightly taller distances in the future, just for the sake of living literally everyone's dream
Yessss! Once summer rolls around there’s a 30 ft and 50 foot cliff jump into water I want to do. But the 50 ft one is like a 6 mile hike away, but it’s well worth it! Can’t wait
Next make a flying bus
A flaw in the design is that your top hand is gripping around the vertical pole, and slipping down when you have to hold your bodyweight up. Whenever your hand slips, the umbrella isn't doing much to slow you down. It would be easier to hold on if your top hand could hold onto a horizontal handle halfway up the pole.
But the end of it I felt confident in the grip. I may have to fix that when it comes to higher heights but either way thanks for the support and feedback!
This one is a winner I wanna see you keep testing this umbrella
Thanks! I forsure want to iterate on it now that I know it can get views! Bigger umbrellas, higher heights, and more!
I can see you growing, big brother! You have amazing potential!💪💪
Thanks man, I hope you’ll be along for the ride!
An actual underrated UA-cam creator. Keep up the work, your content is interesting.
Thanks so much! I hope you’ll checkout some other projects. I promise they’ll be worth it!
This is every kid dream. I actually tried it back in the early 80s. I remember one of my friends breaking one of his legs jumping from the roof of his house😂
Haha nice! It’s good to get hurt as long as it’s not permanent! Builds character!
good idea but poorly executed. you need to hold the umbrella handle tighter and you should have jumped from a higher height
I just realized this video has less than 10k views! The effort and production value is through the roof! Just shared with a group of friends, good luck with your channel!
That’s awesome! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it
nice work man, keep up the work
Hey very cool projekt, something you could try is to make a space to stand on the shaft from the umbrelle, so you dont "hang" on it
imagine yourself gliding through the air on this umbrella. With that position your using right now, (using your arms) you would be holding your entire body weight for the whole ride to the bottom.
I was so surprised seeing the subscribers below at least 100k from such high quality content. Gained a sub man
Thanks for the compliment!
This is supercalifragilisticexpialidocius indeed

🗽🍷
Haha I love how it looks like lady liberty is holding the umbrella. Very clever!
For bigger jumps maybe you need a bigger air vent. The one on this umbrella seems a little small, a bigger one might help with stability.
Yooooo this Video is great! You will get a lot of subs in no time with stuff like that :D
Thanks for the support!
phenomenal oh my god
Thanks brother
If you're going to slow-mo play back the last few seconds at full speed.
Slow motion is a good way to draw out the action shots or to zoom in on the technical bits.
Also, an awesome way captured multiple angles is to ask people to film you and send you the footage. It also has the secret benefit of networking.
Yeah a few folks gave that feedback, noted for next time for sure. Filming the action stuff is what I have the hardest time with for sure
Haha oh this brings back memories.
When I was a kid around 10 ish I used to jump off my 9ft porch continuously using a golf umbrella.
My 10 year old brain knew it would work.
this is on level with like "stuff made here" if you know that guy. You just earnd your 1.571 subscriber.
Thanks man! I appreciate the compliment but he’s such an incredible engineer, I wish I had like an ounce of his skill building things but hopefully what I lack in engineering I makeup for in silliness haha
Fingers crossed the algorithm smiles on you with this video. It’s a really fun idea!
Yeah this one was a blast! It’s done much better than usual for me so far
Result on 6:35
💩
Sending this to my friend who jumped off roofs with me with an umbrella in elementary school
Haha hell yeah!
perfect video! one thing, maybe you should make most of the videos normal and then one slowed down one per shot. like if i shot 5 videos of me jumping down from the roof, only one of those shots would be slowed down because then you can see the impact of the umbrella more.
Awesome. I’d step into the hook and stand on it, rather than relying on arm strength 🎉
Very good. Thanks.
that was a really cool video i really enyojed it i whould love to see more.
Oh yeah I’ll revisit it in the summer!
finally somone whos a real one and says try it
every other youtuber would be like "🤓im a professional dont do this"
and proceed to jump while their legs are kicking randomly like their panicking unprofessionally
😂😂😂 well I haven’t made a DIME from UA-cam except for a donation by my mom that UA-cam took 60% of so I’m absolutely NOT a professional (yet). BUT think people should get out and try stuff! Just don’t be dumb and work your way up systematically!
Things to consider putting one foot in the hook like marry poppens and have it open itself during the fall and maby not indoors most importantly have someone who can help you if things go wrong
When I was a kid in 1970's Australia there was a kids show called "The Yellow House" and in the opening credits a clown would step out of the yellow house second story window with an open umbrella and float gently to the ground. Looks like fun I thought, so up onto my Dad's shed with an regular sized open umbrella and jumped off. I was surprised to hit the ground at normal speed. Shed roof was only about 7 feet from the ground so even though I landed pretty hard I didn't break anything. Geez I was (and still may be) stupid.
😂 you live and you learn! But it’s awesome to see how many people tried this as a kid and how people seems to gravitate towards this idea
This vid is well worth a sub
Haha thank you 🙏🏼 I hope you’ll checkout some other projects, there’s some good sleepers in there!
Imagine if we could just go anywhere without worrying about falling that would be awesome
I know right! That woulda been amazing back when I was doing parkour but unfortunately I did break a leg lol
I see why this was recommended to me 😂
I knew you looked familiar! Haha looking forward to watching the umbrella boat vid! Who knew umbrella’s could be so versatile!!
I would love to try this at home!
It feel like… magical lol
gotta choke up on the grip a little more there
Glad you’re putting those fresh ACLs to work dawg 😂😂
They’re e holding strong so far! But my shin splints hate me 😅
I would use the umbrella bend in the handle as a foot hold so you don’t slip down the pole
a wrist strap might be a good addition to really maximise how much float you're getting out of that.
It would be great if you’d skydive with the umbrella, and if you’re considering to do that, then I recommend to upgrade the umbrella
Haha no I’ll do some higher cliff jumps to water but no sky diving
