How much time and effort you put into your videos doesn’t go unnoticed!! You spent SOOOOOOO long making the pottery and I’m sure hours of research before even starting. Thank you sir!
I literally collected 2 buckets worth of wild clay from a river in Oregon 2 days ago! I have never done pottery before but the clay looked so amazing I thought it was a good time to start. Awesome work, your wife will love it!
The cleaning doesn't really need to be all that complicated like it's done here. In our school we were taught to let it dry in many thin batches and then grind it and filter it. But i actually didn't want to do that so i just manually removed the little pebbles, for 3kg it takes about one or two hours or so. Cooked it in an industrial oven, 0 problems.
These look great! Your wife will love them. I’d love to see you take on natural dyes sometime. Like using leftover vegetables or items from nature to dye some clothes. In case you’ve wondered before if anyone would be interested, I would!

starting when i was 8-9 i used to make pottery like this with my grandma:) we would go and search the nearby creek beds by her house and collect clay. i’m 19 now, she very sadly had her life taken from her in 2020. i still have many of the pieces we made together and i hope to have them forever. this video reminded me of the great times i had with her. awesome video man ❤
@@TiffanyE2003 You should definitely make sure the clay is moist at all times, never oversaturated or dry. Make sure you have properly processed clay (no dirt). And try to be creative.
a practice i love to utilize in the processing stage is the addition of "grog". grog is fired clay that is later ground up and re-added to batches of processed clay prior to shaping and sculpting. there are multiple other substitutes, including: dry, sifted sand or volcanic ash. it assists with overall structural integrity of the piece and helps them shrink more evenly in the firing stage!! of course it isn't strictly required, but it can help works stay stable while pit-firing, especially for beginners :P

The clay in soils can be either 1:1 or 1:2 clays, with 1:2 being the ones to shrink and expand. There’s usually clay in every soil with the exception of very sandy soils (soil texture is the relative amounts of sand to silt to clay). If the top of clay layer, or soil above it, is cracked you can be fairly certain it will swell and shrink during working and drying and thus not useful for pottery.
So, all of that soil you dug up actually was clay, and had clay in it. Your soil had a lot of plasticity, especially that layer you thought was clay. It just had to be processed to remove other bits of sand and dirt from it and you'd have gotten a decent amount of clay from it!
