Nancy truly had a very regal quality about her. Some people say she seemed snooty or cold, but I disagree. Plus, her jumps were so beautiful, especially the landing. Also, she had the most exquisite crossovers.

I cannot believe there's even a debate on who should have won the title here. Really? Kristi skates the performance of her life to terrific choreography, while Nancy struggles through and has to throw in jumps to stay competitive? In what way does that makes Nancy better? If anything, Kristi's marks are too low to reflect the quality of the program. She should have been littering the sheet with 5.9's but didn't because she skated first.

I've yet to see her land a clean triple flip jump.
She doubled it here as well as the 94 Olympic free skate portion in Lillehammer.
Nerves seem to get the best of her and it affects her skating.
The pressure couldn't be more than what Yamaguchi had to endure in 92.
She landed a clean triple salchow jump here, her achilles heel jump bc she usually either falls or doubles it.
Really tip my hat to Kristi Yamaguchi and how she's handled mounting pressure in her skating career.
It almost never affects her skating in her peak years 1991-92.
Yamaguchi finally won the national title here and go on to win the Olympic Gold and defended her World title before retiring.

And yet Kristi crumpled on her triple loop at the Olympics and also doubled her salchow, so I think nerves got to her a little bit too. The highlight of Kristi's Olympic long for me was her triple lutz/triple toe combination. It was sensational. It was the most height I ever saw her get with a lutz and the triple toe after was also really excellent. Her triple lutz at the end of the program was wonderful too. Both were so much better than her triple lutz in the short program. She really "owned the stage" with her long performance. She accomplished 5 clean triples, and the crumpled triple loop, the double salchow and two double axels. In her 92 program, even with the many problems, I believe Nancy accomplished 4 triples and two double axels. In these 92 Olympics, I think Nancy should have won the OP, but Kristi was the clear winner of the long over Nancy and Midori, and she certainly earned the gold overall!!! It would have been interesting to see Nancy try a program choreographed by Sandra Bezic. This Malaguena program for Kristi was a masterpiece!!!

Kristi had 7 triples, and it was flawless; Nancy managed 4 triples, while doubling out of her hardest ones (flip and lutz). I agree that there's absolutely no debate really about who deserved to win.
I will say that Kerrigan's short program that year, for me, was better than Yamaguchi's short, at least the way they were performed at the Olympics.

  • @officeaddict33

How can anyone in their right mind think that this came close to beating Yamaguchi? Kerrigan doubled jumps and at times look flat & slow. Yamaguchi skated the best long program of her career at this event and the reaction at the end of Yamaguchi's program proved it. I think where Kerrigan got the benefit of the doubt throughout her career over 3rd and 4th place skaters is that she has always come across as mature and elegant. She's not my personal favorite but it was always nice to see her do well.

I never knew there was any controversy between Nancy & Kristy's skating here. I am an avid Nancy fan, but she missed too many jumps here (I think due to the beautiful but hard to skate in dress) to have a chance to win. She made these same mistakes (although she did get the triple flip) in her '92 Olympic long (wearing the same dress). The one time I know that Nancy outskated Kristy was in the '92 Olympic short or Original Program. However, having said all that, I always loved this long program, and - as a program - it is so strong that it succeeds - as a program - in spite of the mistakes. But it certainly didn't succeed well enough to beat Kristy.

@@genednomyar3383 I agree Nancy should have won the short in Albertville probably, but am still glad Nancy didn't beat Kristi in the short in Albertville, since then she would have won silver over Ito (due to the short program placings and being marked 3rd in the long to Midori's 2nd) which she certainly didn't deserve with that godawful long program. Midori's long was not classic Midori still, and nowhere near her amazing best, but it was respectably strong with that gutsy and brilliant triple axel late, far and away better than Nancy's meltdown. And I would hate to see Nancy getting silver due to the judges holding her up to 3rd in the long (which she didn't deserve). Maybe the judges would have been sane enough to bump her below Chen and/or Harding in the long to 4th or 5th, just to make sure Ito passed her now, but with how often Nancy was protected and held up I wouldn't bet on it.

@@grantgoffin4774 IMO Midori should've won the long program. A 3 axel after 3 minutes was something most of the men couldn't pull off at those Olympics and Midori still managed 4 other triples. She performed 3 different edge jumps and 2 toe jumps while Kristi could only pull off 3 different toe jumps. Kristi did have a difficult 3/3 but that's nowhere near the difficulty of a 3 axel after 3 min imo. Midori really changed her style due to constant criticism and the judges scored her pretty low in the LP for artistry. Her consistency lessened in 92 and I think it's because she tried to be molded into an artistic skater but her programs prior to 92 were so good and her artistry didn't need to be changed. She should've won the SP and LP at the 88 Olympics!

    • @grantgoffin4774

@@GaryGarlic I agree Midori should have won the long program. I think they just gave it to Kristi anyway since both had mistakes and Kristi was winning anyway (since Midori being 4th in the short couldn't win unless someone else beat Kristi in the long) so they just gave the long program to Kristi just because. I do think if Midori was 3rd in the short and both skate the same programs, Midori does win now.

@ja3399 "Remote" I've heard that said before of Nancy's skating. I don't quite understand what is meant by it. I guess it has to do with not connecting to the audience or the like? I do not find Nancy more artistic. If she were an actor, she would be called 'wooden' at best. She doesn't feel the music. Her moves are applied not felt. That is why Oksana beat her. And in the 15 or so competitions, NOT ONE judge panel has ever had her beat Kristi artistically or technically. Robotic with fairly good costumes, though at times cocktail dressish, but she is what she got, a silver. Michelle one could argue is better than Kristi artistically but often choked thus wasn't as good a clutch competitor but amazing none the less.

    • @carrietremble
      @carrietremble 8 років тому +3

+Kreatures100 Michelle Kwan often choked? She won more than 43 championships, has the most 6.0s in history by a landslide, and is the most decorated US skater in history. If that is choking, I don't know what a good record is! The only time I can think of that she truly choked in a major championship was the '97 Nationals. She was incredibly sick at '99 Worlds, so I don't call her silver medal there a choke. She skated cleanly at the '98 Olympics, but Tara won the gold in a subjective decision. No choking there. She stumbled out of the 3flip in the '02 Olympics, but Kristi Yamaguchi had an identical mistake on her 3loop at the '92 Olympics. Kristi didn't really skate cleanly in the Olympics she won (the stumble on the loop and she only did a 2Salchow), and was fortunate that both Tonya and Midori made several mistakes, or she would not have won. Kristi did not actually have that many clean performances in major championships, and only competed for what, 3 seasons at the senior level? I don't think that is comparable to the 13 years Michelle competed as a senior. Call Michelle's career what you will, but calling someone with 9 National titles, 5 World titles, and 2 Olympic medals someone who often choked sounds silly. If that is a choker, I hope I choke!

However there is no way in hell she is still around in 2004/2005/2006 if she won in either 98 or 2002, not a chance. I wish Michelle would've gotten the Gold too.
But if you watch Tara's LP, she threw in TWO triple-triple jump combinations whereas Michelle had NONE.
All of Michelle's jumps were single triples.
Word was she was coming off foot injury and couldn't do triple-triple jump combos.
But let's face it: I don't even recall seeing a healthy Michelle doing triple-triple jump combinations.
She just didn't push herself technically when she could've and should've.
