    5.9 for technical is kind of stupid when she didnt do either the triple flip or triple lutz.

      I found it to be a very pleasing performance, the most enjoyable performance I saw her do of this Beauty and the Beast program. The performance at 1992 Skate America was pretty good too, but her mistake on the double axel there was more disturbing to the program than her small mistake on the flip here. The flip error only slightly disrupted the program, if at all. Even though her lutz here was a double, it was a huge double, and very satisfying from a spectator's viewpoint. Unfortunately, she struggled at 1993 Nationals with this program, and World's was a heartache. Too bad she didn't save Beauty & the Beast until the '93 - '94 season when she worked herself into the best technical shape of her life. I loved her '94 program, but I would have liked to have seen the same technical excellence given to this Beauty and the Beast, which was - in my opinion - a masterpiece of a program.

    Honestly, in my opinion the artistic part was beautifully done. I have to say that I find Tonya’s performances more interesting, fascinating and exciting for my taste but we have to be honest, Nancy looked like she was floating on ice (except for those big mistakes that she made) and i’m a sucker for the beauty and the beast’s soundtrack, she looked like a doll. I’ve watched a lot of ice skating performances, this one is not the best and shouldn’t have received the first place, those are my thoughts

    she didn't do a triple Lutz, triple flip, or a triple Loop. How did she win? Tonya had a salchow, loop, toe loop. Anyway, her tentativeness served her well in the 93 worlds, when she really. messed up. This is the very reason why Kristi alway outscored her and she never beat Kristi - Kristi's got balls and when it really counts, she's gutsy enough to go for it and always pulls it off.

      Nancy did do a triple flip with a hand down; it wasn't a failed jump; it was a jump with a flawed, but not disastrous landing. She also did a triple salchow, and a triple toe in combination. Her double axel was light and easy. She had good speed throughout most the program. Her edging, as always, was superior to any woman skating at that time, and her spiral was gorgeous. Her DOUBLE lutz had great height and distance, and the double jump (loop?) near the end of her program was also very beautiful. This was an artistic program at a Pro-Am. This Beauty and the Beast program wasn't marred at all by the double jumps Nancy chose to do. Tonya skated very well, but her mistake was more noticable, and took away from the flow of the program more. Tonya's accomplished triples were fantastic, but her double axels were - I think - a little heavy. Tonya's spins were great, but her spiral was not comparable to Nancy's, and the overall beauty of the program was not comparable to Nancy's. Besides of which, Nancy was in first place after the short program. By way of a superior program, superior artistry, and superior overall skating, Nancy deserved to win.

      Kristi was very lucky to win the '92 Olympics. Granted her program was beautiful, and her triple lutz/triple toe combo was amazing, but she messed up her triple loop ( I think it was) and then did a double sal instead of triple, because she was afraid of falling on that too, and didn't want two mishaps in her Olympic long program. Besides that, Nancy's technical (sbort program) at the '92 Olympics was far superior to Kristi's. Kristi barely squeaked out her triple lutz/diuble toe in the short program. It was not a good quality jump. Go back & watch it if you don't believe me. That's one time Nancy should have beaten Kristie, in the short (technical/original/whatever) program of the '92 Olympics. If Nancy would have skated her long program clean there, she could have beat Kristi, because of Kristi's mistakes. But I think Nancy may have let that get in her head a bit, and had several problems of her own.

    • @quiddy
      @quiddy 2 роки тому +2

      @@genednomyar3383 1) Nancy would never have beaten Kristi, not in a million years. Nancy had never ever done a clean free program before 1994 , and the judges in Albertville all but knew this. Kristi has always finished ahead of Nancy in their lifetime. There was never a time when Nancy finished ahead of Kristi. So the scenario that you were describing - what if Nancy completed all her jumps - was a BIG IF. Therefore, how is it even a legit scenario when it has never happened before. Nancy never even finished higher than Kristi even in the short program.
      2) True Kristi was a little forward on her triple Lutz but she rightfully still finished ahead of Nancy because what else did Nancy have left in her short program aside from a few poses here and there, a Vera want dress, and some avant garde signature positions set to modern music? If you compare the other elements, Kristi’s layback spin has more rotations , her free leg way up higher than Nancy’s, pulled her skate up to her head, and didn’t travel around the ice. Nancy’s choreo in addition didnt aged well. watch it now, her dance choreo almost looks silly because her movements were not fully extended and finished. It was like she was just marking her program because her movement were abrupt. Whether or not thst was the intent of her moves, they were a stark contrast to the more classic and timeless Choreo of Kristi’s blue Danube. She was so in synch on every down beat of the song and just like how Dick button often says of Tonya, Kristi takes her time fully finished every movement.
      3) Kristi did not get lucky at all. You have to look at it this way: she fell on a triple loop and doubled a triple salchow , the lowest of all triples. DESPITE THIS, how the hell did she still score high enough to finish first? It means that her program had enough other content to sustain her position. I mean her scores were not mediocre, even though all she needed to do was finish in the top 3, she still won the free skate. Midori certainly didn’t win the free skate despite her triple Axel because of her fall and she didn’t have a triple Lutz because she was struggling to hit it so her team instead made her do a double Lutz, triple toe loop ( instead of the 3lz-3tl). Kristi’s scores were still higher and she had #1 ordinals from more judges than the next highest who Midori. My idol is Midori but unfortunately during those 2 weeks in Albertville Kristi beat her fair and square in both practice and competition. She was so consistent and relaxed yet when it was clutch time she still went for it and triumphed - and this mentality and attitude was ingrained in Kristi by Chris Ness (Kristi made a point to mention this during her interview with David and Jonathan - she said that she was taught to always go for what is planned. If she fell there, that was better than landing a double. There simply was never an option for downgrading. I can totally see that training becomes second nature to Kristi so much so that downgrading was a concept foreign to her, like she doesn’t understand the logic behind the cowardice of downgrading your jumps in lieu of falling on your ass. And that’s what Kristi did throughout her career-rain or shine, as a favorite or underdog, amateur level or pro level, Kristi never chickened out especially on her triple Lutz. Can you say that about the single-Lutzing, double-Flipping Nancy or 3tl-2tlooping Michelle? Which was why judges could almost predict the inevitable - when the going gets touch Nancy has always had a figuratively weak knee, no pun intended. Kristi was just an athlete of a higher level than Nancy especially when we’re talking about mental toughness and nerves of steel. And it’s a learned trait. She probably logged 3 or 4x more hours on the ice as Nancy and Tonya combined.
      This going for your jumps and never downgrading attitude is something that Frank Caroll unfortunately didn’t instill enough into Michelle who is known for a career-downgrader of Triple triples-but was it really his fault? I guess when you try going behind your coach’s back to skip junior skating as Michelle did at age 13 , some of your critical skills don’t reach their full potential.

      @@genednomyar3383 wait you’re not talking about 92 Olympics. Are you? Everyone who knows skating are laughing at what you wrote. There was no way in hell Nancy could have won st Albertville, are you kidding me ? Do you even know skating or are you just one of those fascist/racist spectator from the 80’s who thought katarina Witt was an amazing skater Because she looked like the quintessential aryan Hollywood beauty queen. And Nancy deserved to win because she was pretty. Hello?!? Did you forget about Midori Ito ? After Kristi , the next best skater at Albertville was Midori Ito. In fact, Kristi and Midori were weeeeelll way ahead of the rest of the skaters. Don’t make me list all the shitty stuff that Nancy did in her free program at Albertville, aside from almost crying becuse she knew she got lucky to get the bronze and her performance was not deserving of the podium.

    I think this is actually one of my favorite performances from Nancy and it definitely is my favorite performance of her skating to this program. She skated with more jumps at Skate America that year, but this performance had more speed and more fluidity, and she had also refined some of the gestures. I really don't know how anyone could have watched this program and not enjoyed it if they were being honest with themselves. It was very easy to tell how much the audience was enjoying the program. What if her lutz was a double Lutz. That double Lutz had so much height and so much distance - who missed it being a triple; I certainly didn't and I love a triple jump as much as the next person - maybe more. She always had trouble with triple lutzes in that particular dress. Honestly, I already think she had some problem with the dress because she did the triple Lutz in her warm up. I think doing the triple Lutz in that dress gave her a wedgie or something. And people talk about flaws in this program. It was a free program. As she said, she didn't do everything she planned, but the only flaw in the program was the hand down on the triple flip. Otherwise, there were no flaws, only choices to do doubles instead of triples. This program was skated beautifully, and after seeing this program, how anybody could criticize Nancy for not being able to skate artistically I will never know!!!!!!! Tonya skated very well, but the overall quality and beauty of Nancy's program and performance was superior. The audience knew it, the judges knew it, and so should any honest person who watches it.

    Not sure if Scott Hamilton was being serious or facetious when he said that the music Nancy skated to was the product of “HOURS” of editing…This is the soundtrack from Beauty and the Beast. How hard is it to pick the fast and slow pieces of music from the same soundtrack?! If it took hours then I must say her choreographer was either inefficient or was trying to bill more hours to get paid more :-D! On the note of choreography, I never understood why Nancy did that arm movement at the end of her spiral sequence. That was her go-to move, which made sense when she skated to the soundtrack of Born on the Fourth of July. However, it makes absolutely no sense for her to cover her face at one point of the spiral sequence to Beauty and the Beast - the music is romantic and grand, not mournful!

      Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Kerrigan, but she KNEW how to play the game, while Harding did not. There were clear clues to what the judges want to see- both technically and artistically. And Kerrigan went with that. Tonya wanted to be herself, skate to music she liked, express herself however she liked- and this was a mistake. Whenever Harding got more artistic programs, she ditched them next season to skate to something more current, and that's what killed her presentation marks. It was not really fair, but if you want to win, you have to play the game according do its rules. It was better to have clean doubles than to fall because it did not disrupt the performance.
