  • Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC - 1993 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Free Skate - First, a profile on Nancy Kerrigan of the United States, followed by the Free Skate where she had a complete meltdown due to nerves and pressure. She would place a dismal 9th in the Free Skate and end up dropping from 1st to 5th Place overall. Her failure to win a medal here made this the first World Championship since 1969 when a US lady failed to medal at Worlds and the first time since 1964 when the US team failed to win a medal at Worlds. By placing 5th here, the US would only earn 2 berths for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games and the 1994 Worlds.

      She nailed it in the '94 Olympics and no, Oksana Baiul did not skate near as well in '94 as she did here, and that wasn't even the best as Nancy's '94 performance. Nancy had some combinations that were absolutely perfect including a triple triple. Oksana got better marks in Lillehammer than she did here and didn't skate near as well. Something was rotten in Den, I mean Lillehammer.

      @@GGE47 ARE YOU NUTS? That ballet performance Oksana did with the white costume, even if didn't pull a single jump, was better than ANYTHING anyone could do at the 94 olimpics. Her pink dress performance was AMAZING too, and she was not a big jumper, but she was (and still) the best in actistic part of te sport... Even today no one match that, we have Yuna Kim that is the perfect ballence since she can jump perfectly and has amazing artistic skill, but the artistic part is ALMOST Oksana's level.

      @@theoperatripleaxel5417 Technically Nancy skated a much better program and you might as well include her short program, that counts too, and Oksana is way behind. Just too many two foot landings and gets a 5.9 from the Czech judge. Since the both got the same scores in artistry, the commiecrap judges cheated her out of the gold medal in the technical which Nancy skated rings around. Oksana was always weak in combination jumps which she did not even attempt. She still skated better in the '93 World's than the '94 Olympics. As bad as Nancy skated in the Worlds she still won a bronze medal which proves how little competition she had at the World's. '94 olympic committee committed a terrible and unforgivable sin in picking a majority of 5 communist judges who were still fighting the cold war. Since they got the same artistic marks, they most definitely cheated her in the technical merits, which is as open and brash and in our faces as they could get. They were saying ha ha ha America, here it is in your face what we did, now do something about it. I have known the communists to cheat numerous times in different events for decades, but this time they had a majority of 5 low life judges and they took real advantage of it. olympic committee, you are to blame for choosing these 5 commie cheats so shame on your sorry selves. It is not an oversight on my part to not capitalize the olympic committee. They don't deserve it.

    This was such a disaster, but a very predictable disaster for so many reasons. First, Nancy didn't skate well at Nationals either. Second, The US team was very weak here with irvin and kwiatkowski. Nancy always skated knowing kristi or tonya would medal if she bombed, but here she was the only hope. After mark mitchell cracked, she was really the only hope for ANY american medal. Third, the program was too hard and too different for Nancy in its construction (only time 3 lutz was early right after her sketchy 3 flip, tough entry into 3sal, didnt alternate hard/less-secure jump then easier/consistent jump like usual, etc etc). Nancy also struck me as a homebody then, so traveling to and performing in an Eastern euro venue may have played in too. Lastly, the worlds before an olympics always has extra pressure with olympic qualifying spots on the line. Honestly, the best thing for her 94 olympics was the attack/injury. It took the pressure off because if she bombed, one could blame the leg or emotional trauma vs just ordinary nerves.

      This is an excellent analysis. Yes, this program layout was too ambitious for Nancy. Glad she pulled herself together for the 94 Olympics under all that relentless scrutiny.

      Although Nancy did skate in eastern Europe to medal in 91 and southern Europe in Albertville. I do agree the layout was very challenging, even that spread eagle to lutz incredibly difficult and she struggled with it. Its too bad Harding had slipped and didnt make this world team, it might have made a real difference for the next year.

      @nicholasp1096 by eastern Europe, I mean a country and crowd that had been under Communist rule until 1989. Czechoslavakia was not as Westernized like Germany or France. There was not a huge American presence in the stands. I remember thinking the arena looked dimmer and the crowd subdued compared to previous Worlds venues. Its just my opinion, I cant say if that actually affected Nancy or the US team as a whole.

    A pretty face, a slim figure and pretty dresses. And what else? Nothing about her skating is minimally impressive, I don't get all the fuss around her back then... She looks like a doll, but not an athlete. She doesn't even seem to have a nice personality, she looks somewhat snobbish, if you ask me. The USA threw away their most precious gem in figure skating : Tonya Harding. I'm portuguese, fond of this sport, recently into Tonya and Nancy's case and let me tell you: never in my life have I seen a skater as strong, skilled and powerful as Tonya Harding. I don't believe she had the slightest reason to fear this Nancy, let alone throwing away her whole life and all the hardwork and suffering she had to endure in order to get where she was in the early 90's! I don't believe she was guilty of any of that, but regardless, America should have given her a second thought and treasure her. No one in the world will ever beat her. I don't think judges should be going concessions/leniency in points for injuries either, as they apparently did for OB. I don't think NK was an incredible phenom or anything, but I often think she outranked OB when it counted (94 Olys). OB was lovely to look at (and commentators would often comment upon this, "waiflike" or "doe-eyed") which I think tended to distract viewers from the reality of her abilities.

    As the first skater in decades to not give the US a podium finish was likely a huge embarrassment.
    I can easily see how this program was intended to be iconic and how the last spiral over the chorus section from the title theme was intended to inspire a standing ovation prior to the end of the music. @sbe79 6 років тому +10

      Tonya at her best was miles better than Nancy. Tonya made feminine choreography look like really hard work but Nancy made fluidity look like hard work. Tonya was completely undone by 1993 and was in no shape to compete. But if you see her performances at the 94 Nationals, had Nancy competed Tonya would have given her a serious run for her money. No Triple Axel but it was a 5 triple program.
      Tonya's spins were no match for Nancy's slow clunky ones. So few people mention Tonya's spinning but she really was among the absolute best in that category in this era. The power behind Tonya's jumps were something Nancy could not rival. Instead, Nancy attacked with expensive costuming (like, seriously, Vera Wang? This supposed "poor working class girl" was wearing Wang at every event?), expensive choreographers and brand-name expensive music. She threw money at whatever she couldn't pull off naturally and where Tonya had the largest deficits: effects that could be bought with cash.
      A lot of people bought the story that the Kerrigan family was not much better off financially than Hardings, but the fact is: Stoneham is an expensive town as an exclusive suburb of Boston. It *always* has been. It has never been a "poor" area.

    • @genednomyar3383

      I didn't hear much whining. I heard her say that the scores could have been much lower than what they gave her, so it seemed to me that she seemed grateful for the scores she received. And when her coach said, " we'll just have to see what others do," she replied that she wasn't interested in what they did but in what she did. In other words, she wasn't skating just to beat someone; she had gone out with the intention of skating a good program in which she hoped to skate her best. She didn't want others to have to skate badly just so she could place in the top three. I had avoided watching this program for many years, because I thought it would be too painful to watch. I finally watched it today, and did not find it that horrible at all. Her skating between jumps was still fine, and I still enjoyed the program as a whole. Yes, many jumps were singled or doubled instead of tripled, and out of the four triples she did land, there were problems with the landings of two of them. But in addition to the two good triple jumps, there was also a good double axle, and it was still a beautiful program. The only thing I heard her complaining about was that something was too tight, perhaps her right boot. Other than that, I heard her say to her coaches that everything had been fine, and that she basically couldn't understand why she had made so many mistakes on her jumps. Did you watch her short program? She skated amazingly well in it!!!!!!! As far as the 94 Olympics Long Program goes, that was a different night and a different skate, and on that night she skated much better than Oksana. At the 94 Olympics, Oksana skated beautifully in the short program although she two-footed the landing on her triple Lutz. Nancy had a completely clean short program with a gorgeous triple Lutz of her own, and she did win the short program. Remember, Oksana & Nancy's overall point scores where numerically identical after the long programs. However, Nancy received one tenth of 1 point higher score for the technical score, and Oksana received one tenth of 1 point higher for the artistic score. in the long program the artistic score breaks the tie, and that's why Oksana won the long program. In my opinion, Nancy's technical scores should have outscored Oksana by several points, and not just by one tenth of one point. I prefer Nancy's style of skating to Oksana's, so I personally also would have given her a higher score for the artistic marks.

      Abbey Szumloz I'm sorry but he didn't say it "accidentally" he said that because with fair judgment Yuna should have been the champion, that's why he was so sure saying "it's gonna be gold" he knew what he was talking about, too bad Sochi biased the competition and bribe the judges so their only skater left (since Yulia fell and was left behind) had the first gold medal in history, full of shame and dirt but they don't care aparently. Well anyways what I like more about this girl (Nancy) were her dresses ^^

    There is a heart for people (the audience) and a oneness with the music that the others lacked - simple. There was intense jealousy of little Oksana when she whooped the others at Worlds 1993. SHE had it all plus a feminine charm and grace on ice. The audiences adored her and there was much envy.

    The most ironic thing about Nancy's choking at the Worlds is that in addition to all of the obvious bad things, it actually set the stage for her own attack the next year. Because she didn't medal at the worlds, the US only got 2 spots for the Olympic team. This put the pressure on Tonya and her Goon Squad because instead of competing for one of 3 Olympic berths, they were only competing for one of two and thus felt that Nancy had to be eliminated to make sure Tonya would get a spot.

    • @mht4908
      @mht4908 2 роки тому

      Also, the 3rd American in this worlds, Tonia Kwiatkowski failed to even qualify into the main draw, so the US being left with 2 spots was partially because of her as well. Nancy was definitely one of the scapegoats in this situation tho, having wining the short but placing 9th in the free skate

    • @lucindacampbell9754
      @lucindacampbell9754 Рік тому +4

      But the attack was still so unnecessary. The only American in 1994 close to Tonya's skill level was Michelle Kwan, and she was too young to go to the Olympics. So Tonya would've made it into the top 2 unless she had completely flubbed up. Of course, no one ever accused her "goon squad" of having enough brains to figure that out.

      @@lucindacampbell9754 I’m not sure the attack on Kerrigan was at all as rational or as clear headed. I think Tonya and her thugs were so consumed with jealousy of Kerrigan that they felt they needed her out the way completely…she was a competitor not just for medals but for endorsements as well. Their plan failed spectacularly obviously as Kerrigan won the silver and the huge contracts.

      That’s all salacious soap opera fun and who knows if Tonya actually planned the attack, but it’s also probable she didn’t, she didn’t need Nancy ‘out of the way’ as if they were the only two skaters in the world? They weren’t and neither of them were going to win in ‘94

    Nancy wasnt a terrible skater but this was definitely her worst program that ive ever seen. Some noticeable consistencies between this show and others is her unpleasant look for the whole performance, weak jumps, and slow spins. She was always very rude and had no reason to be from what I saw. The only reason I believe she got so popular was the fact that she looked like the definition of a sugar plum princess and judges liked that. Skaters who dont fit that build often get lower points even if they had a superior program.

    What a lot of pressure for a young woman. I admire her statement it doesn't matter to her what other people do, only what she can do. Overall, she is a beautiful and gifted skater, who sometimes has to deal with not skating perfectly every time. It's got to be hard. Years of training and work can all be undone with one moment of slip up. That is so tough to see, and we see it over and over, from so many athletes. We all have to be in awe of the years of dedication of every single athlete who even makes it close to Olympic level, and those who get there, and those who medal. It is beyond what most of us normal people can accomplish.

      Jan Van, very well said. I find it unacceptable that those who don't skate, or even if they do skate, certainly not at this level, to believe they have the right to criticize or say unkind things. When you all who make mean remarks can skate at Nancy's level and compete with her, then maybe you can talk. I doubt it though, you'd be too busy ducking your heads.

    I was never a fan of hers, but this and the Pro-Ams performance were hard to watch. You could tell she was more nervous than usual even in her starting position. It seems like she was too focused on winning the gold after all her strongest competitors (Kristi Yamaguchi, Midori Ito, Tonya Harding) either retired from amateur skating or didn't qualify, she forgot that if she did what she was capable of, she may not necessarily win, but a medal would've been a guarantee

    I'm not sure, but I don't believe Nancy was EVER able to land both the triple flip and lutz at the beginning of this program? Watching it again, I can't help but wonder if the order of her jumps just didn't work. Landing the triple flip and rushing right into the lutz with limited preparation (and intense music) would be difficult for any skater...
