That intro piece on Nancy's mom got to me. Her children are everything to her.
To have a handicap with barely any eyesight is difficult enough.
Can't imagine the pain and heartbreak she went thru after the attack on Nancy at the 94 Nationals leading up to the Olympics.
Then to lose her husband many year later after he and one of the sons got into a nasty fight.
He died as a result from the violent incident.
The jury later acquitted Nancy's brother.
That family has really been thru a lot.
This was a classic short program. I agree probably Nancy's best. Choreography was great. Spiral positions all interesting, the entrance to that last jump was original and extremely difficult. Her posture and position is right on everywhere, probably some of her best footwork too. And that Lutz combo was first rate. The height and distance traveled impressive.
It was the best women's original program of the 1992 Olympics. She was underscored here.
That lutz beautiful outside edge
To outshine Ito takes ALOT of work and she definitely did that here. Her lutz was so much more
higher and explosive than Yamaguchis.
She has beautiful flow over the ice
She sure does has a beautiful flow over the ice 💜💛❤💙💚🖤💗
LOVE this performance!!!
Me too! 💙💛💗💜❤💚🖤💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
I did always like the shoot the duck into the lutz it was very creative
So smooth, and such strong jumps! Beautiful!!!
This was one of her best skates at a major competition.
Nancy enjoyed a pressure-free 92 Olympics as all focus and spotlight were on Kristi and Midori.
Kerrigan always performed better not being in the spotlight.
That's why her near Gold-medal winning performance in 94 came as a surprise with all the focus on her and coming back from an attack at Nationals.
I don't think her 92 performance was pressure free, but she felt much less pressure with her short program than with her long. I think she felt inspired in the short. With the long, she heard Kristi's marks, and coming into the long in 2nd, she knew she had a chance to beat Kristi, and maybe Midori as well. I think that - and skating in a beautiful, but stiff, costume got to her a bit. I recently heard Nancy say that the beautiful white dress kept her from being able to do her triple lutz. I'm glad she chose a more comfortable - but still beautiful - dress for her long program at the '94 Olympics.
I always loved this program. Probably my favorite of Nancy's.
Beautiful performance.
What a wonderful mother she has, so devoted and loving, sad she can't see Nancy cearly. Made me wonder where Tonya could have got in her career if she had a mother like that instead off that witch.
Exactly. People say "Oh, Nancy came from a poor family too," but Nancy came from a very supportive family while Tonya's family was abusive and undermined her at every turn. Although both families were poor they were very different situations.
Gotta love Scott!!! "A Required Optional" move?? Lol
Unpopular opinion... I think she was better technically than Kristi in the SP. I think she COULD have won, not that I argue with the placement.
I agree. Her jumps were bigger, more powerful and more technically sound, and her performance in this short program was smooth as butter, just like her double axel.
She deserved at least a 5.8.
Beautiful costume.
Nice to see Nancy wear yellow because she usually wears black and white.
textbook-like 3Lz
Beautiful
I absolutely hate this music and costume, but can we talk about the beauty of that Lutz combination and how she was doing entrances into her jumps in 92 before it was ever a requirement. The combination was probably the biggest and best of her whole career.
Nancy is beautiful and she always had the most beautiful skating costumes. I likes her better at 92 Olympics.
The color of her outfit is reminiscent of Peggy Fleming's in 1968 - the year I was born. 🙄
I love her beautiful sparkling green outfit she looks beautiful and gorgeous 😍😍
Chartreuse Vera Wang.
I do love that shoot the duck.
so good!!!!!
Gorgeous
You gotta be simi pretty with a 20,000 dollar vera Wang costume. That's all it takes to medal in the Olympics
First time ever seeing her skate mistske free, always beautiful and elegant. Only complaints are being consistent and some what cold.
There was no trouble with inconsistency in this program, and I didn't find it cold. Catch that smile before she began, and that hint of flirtatiousness in landing the double lutz with her hands on her hips. I found her performance here to be powerful (from that very first circular move), and silky smooth She also had great energy and speed throughout. And that smile at the end was infectious!!
Ludicrous scores, but they were saving the higher scores for Yamaguchi, Ito and Harding. And a few idiot judges who thought the French skaters had a chance LOL
True, her technical scores should have been much better: inspiring triple lutz, silky smooth double axel, triumphant double lutz from the shoot the duc position, great speed and power from that very first circular turn!! She also had great presentation with wonderful interpretation of the music. It was a performance that was about as flawless as one can get.
Agreed, she should have been 1st in the SP imo
such a powerful and strong skate.
Beautiful and strong just like you.
Hot take, but this should’ve won the OP. Would’ve given Midori the gold…
I would have to quit skating if I have to perform to that music.
She always picked the most random music
This was when she was down to earth and humble. 2 yrs later she was such a spoiled prima Donna
2 years later she had the unbearable weight of USFSA expectations, press stalking her every move 24/7, and trying to regain her physical/mental strength for the olympics after a traumatic incident at nationals. I wish people showed her a little grace after all she endured. Nobody is perfect.
thr best. Dressed
I think if Nancy had chosen better music she would have on the OP.
whats with this tonya and nancy comparison.. im from a hot country and i see both ladies are great in skating. they both are great.. tonya was just a victim of the circumstance. may they be in peace now..
I always felt she was worthy of gold and even though she did a perfect performance that Russian girl, who could stick her foot way up high plus made a mistake, got the gold and then after the Olympics did drunk driving. Nancy deserved the gold I always felt. She’s a beautiful skater elegant and mature.
Such amazing support from her family and a great coach who left his wife for her.
Her coach didn't leave his wife for her you're thinking of her husband the promotor
@Ken More: You should really edit your statement to correct it. I know you made an honest mistake, but nevertheless, your statement is blatantly untrue.
@@Ray-fj5un 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I wonder how things would have turned out if back then it wasn't so gendered and Nancy Kerrigan got into hockey.
Guys stop the comparing judgemental attitude. Stop the bullying and hurtful comments, ad the survivor of bullying I know the pain, heartache. And damage it can do, I suffered for years. Who are all if you to do the same. For those who think Tanya is a victim your dead wrong. Tanya was jealous of Nancy and knew darn well what her husband was going to do to Nancy. She wanted Nancy out of the way. You all need to see Tanya for who she is
Agreed.
Idk I prefer Tonya😒
Ha ha ha
“You do girls things” 🙄
I don’t like Nancy Kerrigan but it’s so sad that her mother can’t see her 😢
Sob!😢😢😢
I think the. Choreography is stiff
Great performance but what a wretched dress.
I agree about the performance, but take a look at Peggy Fleming's dress in the 1968 Olympics. Nancy's dress was a nod to Peggy. Also, this dress was comfortable on Nancy, unlike the stiff (but beautiful) one she wore in the long. I wish she would have worn her short program dress in the long, and then we would have seen a triple lutz instead of a single. We may have also seen the triple salchow landed properly, and the triple/triple combination.
One of my favorite dresses of Nancy's. I loved the chartreuse color.
[yawn]
If Nancy's mother would say today that boys should play hockey and girls should figure, she would get death threats from all over the place.
The media milked that blind mother story for all it was worth.
Nancy says somewhere that they made too much of a deal about the hockey thing, too.
Boring skater.
You're entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't make your statement correct.
This was the best short program of the night.
I agree totally. Kristi's might have had better transitions (although I found nothing wrong with Nancy's), but Nancy's jumps were bigger and better, and on this night she had fantastic energy, and speed across the ice as well as silky smoothness. Her double axel was as smooth as butter, and her triple lutz was inspiring. Her double lutz from the shoot the duc position with hands on hips was an exclamation point. Her musicality was wonderful, and I loved this program for her.
Brenda Kerrigan just seems like the most loving, devoted, doting mom... she teared me up here. Nancy is all about her 3 children, and loves being a mom. She obviously had one hell of a role model.
Congrats Nancy..that shoot the duck position into your jump was awesome as was your program....you truly deserved first place after this program....Be proud..!
Loved that performance!
Me too!!!
I LOVED this program, and I'm not a huge Kerrigan fan... this was #1 for me.
3:33 Tonya Harding does a Triple Axel right after Nancy skates away, but it's cut off on this video. You can find the the complete Triple Axel on the EuroSport broadcast: watch?v=Yi4qXpt6JVk
Thanks for the link. Tonya sure did warm up her triple axel successfully. Too bad she missed it in her program. Do you know, did she also land it in warm up before her long program? It would also be interesting to know if Nancy was able to warm up her triple/triple combination, lutz and salchow successfully before she skated her long program.
Dedicated and focused commitment paid off for her on multiple levels. I have always appreciated her artistry.
Me too.
I like this program with its clear lines more than many of today's with their hectic arm movements and (required) enervating twizzles and step sequences.
Agreed.
She also had beautiful posture and flow over the ice
The fluff piece is interesting in that the gender roles were so defined, "You wanna skate, well you gotta do girl skating, hockey is for boys." I wonder how things may have been different if she decided to skate in 2018 eh?
I agree with others that this was the best OP of the night. The combo was first rate, great height and speed. Her command and flow over the ice also better than the rest on that night.
@Princess Kitten A case of apples and oranges. I rooted for Kristi, always a huge fan. Her Lutz was forward and her double toe had virtually no running edge coming out. Other than that, yes a great performance. But to me, on this night, I would have had Nacny first, Kristi second.
Exactly!! Great comment!!
This was the best.
Yeah, Nancy has her ups and downs for sure, but that combination is one of the best 3-2 combinations I've ever seen.
The music was a bit strange but her choreo was much more catching than most of her program's and I agree Nancy should've been first
The music was a little different but I thought it suited her well.
@@genednomyar3383 it was horrible, it sounded like a arcade game music
I think the music was bizarre. The beginning was ok but the ending hurt her scores. It sounded like a copy of a roughed out version of what the orchestra was supposed to play.
@@luispenaloza7174 it was considered avant-garde for its day, and sophisticated. It was fine and she skated wonderfully to it.
@@luispenaloza7174 It was composed and performed by Mark Militano, Mary Scotvold's brother-in-law, who was also a former US Pairs Skater.
this program was better than the one in 1994.
She skated beautifully also in her short program in '94, but I think she skated this one with a bit more speed and power. I think she was inspired in this skate. I think her short in '94 was "taking care of business."
Nice skating, but this music is...strange.
She always chose the worst music! It's like elevator music. Maybe they couldn't afford to clear the rights to anything decent?
lflagr horrible
I thought I was listening to Battletoads for a bit there. It's definitely early 90s and it was composed by a fellow figure skater.
@@snopesshop1903 I think you are Tonya pos Harding in real life the way you troll Nancy Kerrigan videos. So very sad.
The music is avant-garde and artistic yet it still has a hook and a classical/contemporary finish. It's refreshing to see and hear music in skating not ladies cliché or worse, overused. This music was composed just for Nancy, and it was composed by the former U.S. pairs skater Mark Militano. He also composed her beautiful 93-94 short program music.
it's not like she was skating to looney toons music or sesame street. "beauty and the beast" (her '93 program) was an academy award-winning score. beautiful music and a beautiful program.
Her short program music were composed and performed by former U.S. Pairs Champion Mark Militano (with sister Melissa), who is married to Anne, sister of Mary Scotvold, coach of Nancy Kerrigan.
I thought she skated Beautiful here...
A possible reason for the 5.5s and 5.6s is that a deduction may occurred with her flying spin, I counted 5 revolutions. I don't have the 1991-92 ISU Rules to refer. There are required minimum revolutions with all spins. If you watch Nancy perform this program at other events, I count at least 6 revolutions on the flying camel spin.
Great program Nancy and I love the shoot the duck into a double toe that was just awesome......and the music WAS just perfect for this routine.....and you people who praise a girl for breaking the law and in my humble opinion a girl who knew everything from the very start I will never understand....Nancy did not deserve any of this....Nancy went on and held her head high and earned a silver metal and has become a wonderful mother.....please tell me what is there to hate on her....one silly comment or two?? and she made that comment about Oksana because she was told that it was taking so long ( 28 minutes) because Oksana was getting her make up re-done which would have been a silly thing had it been true...How in the hell would any of you like it had it happen to you and than there are people hating you for some reason???Makes no sense to me and you haters should be ashamed...What did she ever do to you?
Well said!
Well it wasn’t oksana and make up. They couldn’t find the orphan waifs nation anthem
Kristi's was better flow and musicality plus the tech elements, Nancy was good too but not as good as Kristi
Kristi's program was lovely, but Nancy's jumps were definitely better. Compare her big, beautiful triple lutz to Kristi's (her lutz was not very big, had a slight lean, and the double toe following was a little off too). On this night, I enjoyed Nancy's program more. I thought it was more interesting, had more energy, was more powerful, and was skated just as elegantly. The long program was different. I will never forget Kristi's triple lutz/triple toe combination in that one.
One of Nancy's great performances & at Olympics.. difference bwt her / Kristi was connecting moves, Nancy's had breaks, K.Y. was like 1 long move start to finish
But Nancy's jumps were so much better; they were higher, more powerful, and even smoother. Kristi's triple lutz was not very high and was leaning a little, and the double toe was a touch off also. Nancy rarely missed with her double axel, and this one was as smooth as silk. The double lutz from the shoot the duc position was done with so much confidence, and was an exclamation to the performance. Her interpretation of the music was also outstanding!
I had this as the top SP of the night.
Bronze deserved! Not many know that a jump with arms raised (in the 90s) was difficult. Didn't care for the costume or music, BUT Nancy was great.
A lot of skaters did their double jump with hands raised in the 80's and early 90's. Check out Midori Ito's short at the 1988 Olympics.
I thought the music suited her, and I thought she interpreted it very well. I think the costume probably looked better in person than it came off on TV. The nice thing was that she felt comfortable in this costume, and it helped her skate her best. She stll looked great in it too. While the white costume for the long was stunning on her, I heard her recently say (on a celebrity version of Antique Road Show) that it prevented her from doing her triple lutz. I wish she would have worn this also for her long program.
"A required optional double jump." Ummm, okay Scott??? I know what he meant, but when I heard it I was like, wtf? Seriously though, to me Kerrigan truly deserved to be first after this program; it was innovative, interesting, and every element was better than Kristi's; literally every element. I didn't care for the synthesized Yanni-esque music, but that was Nancy. But she did deserve first.
Matthew C I think he was referring to the fact that the double jump was required but the specific jump was optional, as opposed to the specific requirement of the double axel
Matthew C 8
Her early draw had nothing to do with previous results I believe. I agree the scores were kept down a little bit in favor of Kristi, but her third place from worlds had her as a medal favorite.
Worst thing is if Nancy had won the short over Kristi as she should have, Midori who was 4th could have come back to win the gold. She would have had to only beat Kristi in the long to win (since Nancy back then was a crappy erratic long program skater certain to bomb and be 3rd or lower in the long as Ito would have needed as well) and probably could have. With Kristi winning the short Midori needed Kristi to be 3rd or lower in the long, far less likely.
This was a gorgeous program and from what the commentators said very difficult technically as well. I don't get the scoring for Nancy at all. Far too low in my opinion. The piece on her and her family is great but very sad. To never see her beautiful daughter must be heartbreaking for her mother. Does anyone know what cost Brenda Kerrigan her sight...this says that she has been almost blind since Nancy was born.
She had a virus that attacked the optic nerve and lost her vision literally overnight. Very sad.
What was the requirement for the flying spin back in 1992? Nancy's flying camel only had 5 rotations. I'm wondering if the requirement was at least 6? By the late 90s the requirement was 8 rotations in position.
ohioweatherguy my exact thought, some judges deducted for this spin. When in doubt, judges will give the skater the advantage
undermarked. 5.8 and 5.9 for me. she should have wun the short programm
The problem she had is she skated way early and before all of Harding, Yamaguchi, Ito, as well as the secondary contenders like Bonaly, Chen, Chouinard, everyone except a young Sato. With Harding, Yamaguchi, and Ito all left it would be impossible to give her marks that high, even if she deserved them. Yamaguchi skated near the end, a far better draw.
Agree, her music choice in 1994 cost her the gold, her music in 1992 was spot on.
Scott wasn't quite right to say she couldn't have skated it better. I believe the solo spin required at least 6 rotations? I counted five. But her combination was better than Kristi's and so was her spiral. So Scott was almost right.
@bradyachin She's a bit choppy. At this point she didn't have the flow that Kristi had. Her in-between skating wasn't that difficult. Her spin positions needed work, landings were a touch too curvy. I think she was scored correctly.
Well, I've always thought that she rose to the occasion and had an amazing program. Even if she SHOULD have won the OP, she wouldn't have won the Free Skate.
Still...I LOVE this program!
She always had pretty dresses...a great program! :) I wonder why Paul and Nancy didn't marry? Haha!
Brendon Groen lol cause Paul was waiting for me. However, I took too long to become of legal age lol
She's not a believer
@Kevindl1985 I agree. Nancy's triple lutz combination was enormous, by far the best of the night. But everything Kristi did was so technically solid, it's hard to argue against her. Since she was the world champion, she would get the edge in any dead heat with another skater, except perhaps Midori Ito.
Nancy is a joke compared to Tonya Harding .
I wonder how Brenda K is doing since her hubby died? The son had a longer rap sheet than Tonya Harding did and it was kept quiet by the Boston media.I see Nancy has on the pretty light green dress,I bet its a tribute to the green one Peggy skated in,in 1968.Peggy has said the French didn't understand the color she picked,in honor of a light green French pear wine from the Grenoble area. Her Mother made the costume.
HattieLovesCattie what did the son do
She was good, but the thing that always freaked me out about Nancy was that she was in her 20's and skating to disney music, and was made to look like a young doll. It always felt like she made to look childish and immature (and her attitude didn't help).
Even if Kristi was second in the long and second in the short she still would have won the gold, right? Ito was fourth in the short, wouldnt she have needed Kristi to be third to win?
metsedudenj Hmm, no. In order for Midori to win gold, she would have needed to win the free skate and have whoever was first in the short be 3rd or lower in the free. It's not really contingent on what the 2nd place person does. Assume Nancy wins the short, Kristi is second in both segments and Midori is 4th in the short and wins the long. (We keep Surya where she is: 3rd in the short, 6th in long). Then Midori would have won, because Kristi being second in the free helps bump Nancy to 3rd and out of reach for gold. Both Kristi and Midori would have had a factored placement of 3.0, but the tiebreaker goes to whoever places higher in the long program--so Midori. For Kristi (or anyone) to win the gold by being second in both segments, then she'd need someone outside the top 4 to have won the free skate.
I might have had her about Yamaguchi. All three jumps were very well executed. She is wonderful on ice, nice spiral.. Could be faster but therre is good argument to have had her first.
I agree with you, except I thought she had plenty of speed!!!
If you want to play that game, I thought Oksana Baiul had an even more "questionable" music choice for her '94 long program. I'm not saying that Oksana should have used another selection from classical ballet - but, show tunes?
5.9/5.8
No, it is random I believe, isnt it?
Very true, there may have been politics going on there to make sure Kristi won
@brunofttt Was he too short for her? Maybe... who knows...
Nancy's mom wouldn't survive nowadays.
Stop showing her mother... what a gossipy attitude is this? I want to see Nancy not her private life
Not to compare them once again. But imagine Tonya skating to any of these programs of Nancy’s. Would have been electrifying. She just had so much more power and passion in her movements
I think all of Nancy’s programs began with her looking up at the ceiling. By the way that music is absolutely awful.
She's not that good of a skater ...To get the Gold ... u have to make it effortless ...she breath too hard and shows Wow ! This is hard work ? It has to be PERFECT 🙄
This was perfect. It was her long that wasn't perfect.
She’s elegant but too simple and boring
