Many women in figure skating have been talented, many have been pretty, even beautiful, but she's the only one I can think of who was sexy. And she managed to be sexy without sacrificing either art or athleticism. And she was also beautiful.
I remember her. I was 12 years old and we lived in USSR. I always prayed that she won. She is gorgeous and best.....Tears on my eyes, I remembered my childhood(((((
Katarina Witt was the best in the 1980s. There are some idiots who compare her with Yuna Kim. They should know that it was already more than 20 years ago.
I agree. Im kinda feeling embarassed as a citizen of korea myself.. Dunno why they keep doing that.. Well i guess sotnikova had such a inpact on our mind....but still!!
daffodils4her Was that directed at me?? I clearly only compared the two to argue against someone who'd suggested she was better than modern skaters. I stand by my statement that she does not hold up technically OR artistically. The context made it clear that I we were comparing skaters of different generations.
Such a shame that so many people are obsessed with comparisons from one era to another It's hypothetical, subjective and ultimately completely pointless. If you adhere to the principle that current skaters are always 'better' than past ones, then the best skaters of all time haven't been born yet, and if that continued to be the case, none of us will ever see them on the ice, so why not sit just back and enjoy greatness whenever it happens?
Thank you very much for uploading this. I liked this performance very much when I watched it about 20 years ago and since then I could not help wanting to watch it again. Wow... I thank you and UA-cam.
I love Katarina's Carmen too; I love the posing. This program has a unique choreography. The way Shizuka Arakawa's Turandot has a unique and unforgettable choreography.
her spins are great. notice she never moves off point. shes probably one of the most underrated skaters of all time because of what she accomplished. she's more than just a pretty face.
Katarina Witt is very big in Europe. She is a huge, dazzling STAR!!! People love to see her skating. I believe that even when Witt gets to be 75 years old people in Europe would love to see her skate, and perform Carmen.
simply devine!! the only one who was perfectly capable to tell a story on the ice. never seen anyone doing it that good up to today, not even my favourites sasha cohen and michelle kwan. even her jumps were great. good height perfect landing and her position in the air, just fabulous. but still yet the mistake at the loop is upsetting me :o) she´s the best ever
This is just beautiful to watch. Although I'm not a big fan of 'dying at the end of the performance', I love overall flow of this program. She definitly feels the music well and skates as if she's dancing to the music.
It's a Perfect performance of a lifetime no one could beat. music wise, her emotion her exotic beauty. She didn't have harder triple jumps but sure she attacks it amazingly. She cover's the ice immensely. I'm so hooked on her in this performance.
I do agree with you, I knew she was part of the state drug programs in East Germany, but I had no idea of how involved she really was until recently, she was given many favors, and she and her family benefited from her co-operation with the state(extentions on her families home, cars visa to trave,l vacations); she was totally aware and involved, her file is 1,354 pages long !
I believe that Katarina Witt was, and still is, the greatest female figure skater in the modern era. She used western glamour to her advantage, and, during the 80's, she was a better athlete than Mary Lou Retton was in her sport. The sexiest female athlete too! I love you, Katarina!
I met her once.. I was born the same day she won gold on this so my parents named me Katarina! When I saw her I was only 7 and my mother said " go on Katarina she won't bite" and she looked round when mum said her name and we got into a big conversation on how I had the same name as her. I skated too so when competed and they announced my name I was given such odd looks. But I loved it cos I thought because I had her name was the reason I won everything!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this performance!! She was so beautiful. I could not forget this Carmen and wanted to see it again for 20 years!!
While the program is excellent in choregraphy, content and performance, this really shows how subpar her jumps were by today standards. She had only 4 triple jumps, the two easiest of the six (with a bad landing on the second salchow), she doubled the loop, had only a double flip and didn't even try the lutz. She had one full-fledged triple-double combination and stepped out of the second one (again, that second salchow). By comparison, 7 triples is a must in any competition today (in fact, Ito had 7 already in Calgary) with either a triple-double-double or a triple-triple combination, not to mention that Asada Mao landed 8 triples in Sochi. All in all, a great program of Witt, but it really shows that figure skating was a different world back then, rules included.
+indiatree After rewatching, I guess you are right - it looks messy but it's indeed a half loop (with what seems to be an auxiliary step-turn). My bad. Half loops are regulars even today but thanks for the clarification on the sequence thing.
+indiatree After watching her 1987 LP at the Worlds, I think it's just that her half loop is different in style from how skaters do it today, but it's a planned half loop indeed. The auxiliary step to gain momentum for the flip is still very strange in both LPs, though. Different scoring system, I guess.
That's why I don't like today's figure skating... coz only the jump counts and nobody cares for music interpretation... only Kim Yuna caught my eye, she was strong both technically and artistically.
Agreed!! Anything that has Chinese fonts imposed across the screen cannot be deemed "Perfect Quality". Katarina's beauty was breathtaking that night and blew away the entire world.
You are totally correct, even if you received a lot of "downgrade" votes. This program is brilliant on certain aspects, just not a technical one. Most of her jumps have a looooong straight slide into them interspersed with some minor movements. The Salchow still looked good here, less so by the 90s. But watch the intro into the first Toe and the second Salchow... she simplified it by doing a extended straight entrance. I LOVE her as a skater... but she was never "technical".
One of my most memorable sporting moment. Katerina's performance is only made more shiny, by Debbie Thomas already excellent performance previously. Amazing moment.
triple toe-double toe, triple salchow, triple toe, double axel, double lupe, triple salchow, double axel. she has 7 jumps . triple 2toe,2salchow. double 2 axel 1toe 1lupe. but her expression is so beautiful
Wow!! I love Katarina Carmen, the posing is what makes it great. Today's skaters are just copycats its all about the jumps. Katarina so unique no one skates like this anymore which is such a shame!!!
This was outstanding.. The music selection was perfect for that time as well as her executing the choreography so technically and beautifully.. Best skate up until Yuna Kim this past month
@md65000 Loved your comment. Debbie Thomas was never anything more than a second rate skater pushed by the USFSA because of her race. That is the truth. I am not racist-Debbie was a lovely and brilliant girl(now a doctor)but never deserved the intense attentention and support lavished on her by the USFSA. There were many others of her era not treated like the golden goose. Former USFSA Member
Now, to say loyal .... Katarina Witt has previously characterized the figure skating, they put art on the ice, like no other. For this and this is so real, it deserves the first Paltz and the Carmen-shorter ... so full of soul was gone and danced. I'm German. and not biased.
she did not stand and pose for a minute. thats ridiculous. this program is the culmination of years of work. she went from a young tom boy jumping bean to a polished artist who actually understood the entertainment value of her sport and became a phenomenal artist. if she was so beatable, then why did no one beat her for years in the 80s?
I just saw her on TV tonight. She still looks great after all these years! :-)
She is gorgeous and best.....Tears on my eyes, I remembered my childhood(((((
she skates to "Carmen" so perfectly because she captures the essence of the character...great vid!!!
Immer wieder gern anzuschauen. Es war wunderbar. Herzlichen Dank. ❤
Just stunning!! I love this program.
What an actress. She's elegant.
Katarina Witt was the best in the 1980s. There are some idiots who compare her with Yuna Kim. They should know that it was already more than 20 years ago.
Best ? 80's ? Are you serious?
I agree. Im kinda feeling embarassed as a citizen of korea myself.. Dunno why they keep doing that.. Well i guess sotnikova had such a inpact on our mind....but still!!
+Omar Alfonso
who is the best in 80s?
daffodils4her Was that directed at me?? I clearly only compared the two to argue against someone who'd suggested she was better than modern skaters. I stand by my statement that she does not hold up technically OR artistically. The context made it clear that I we were comparing skaters of different generations.
she was born to do Carmen! love this video, a true olympic moment that will be remembered. thanks violayan
Beautiful....!
every move is perfectly timed with the music. pure art.
the moment which single handedly made me fall in love with Witt, skating, the colors red/black and white and opera all in one swoop at the age of 7
Such a shame that so many people are obsessed with comparisons from one era to another It's hypothetical, subjective and ultimately completely pointless. her program fits perfectly to the music
She is so consistent throughout the whole programme; fluid and beautiful .. plus she makes the jumps look so easy! xD
I was 6 when it happend. She was my first idol ever

Das ist wundebar!
Wow she is so light! I lover her jumps and expressions♡
her spins are great. notice she never moves off point. shes probably one of the most underrated skaters of all time because of what she accomplished. she's more than just a pretty face.
She has haft the grace and agility to perform Carmen of Bizet on the ice. I remember her as a perfect ballerina on the ice.
Wow! she just soooooo amazing!
Perfekt! Sie ist Angel. I love Kati!!! Jest absolutnie pięka.Nawet po 22 latach.A może nawet piekniejsza..
@ViVi80 I agree. She is SO magnetic! I've never seen another skater who skates with as much fire as does!
Katarina Witt is very big in Europe. She is a huge, dazzling STAR!!! People love to see her skating.
I believe that even when Witt gets to be 75 years old people in Europe would love to see her skate, and perform Carmen.
Sie ist die schoenste Frau der Welt
This was in 1988, it's perfect quality for 1988 not for 2012!
She’s unique one & only
It's a LEGEND!!
Very-very beautifull, thank you!
One of the greates women of sport all time. 5*!
Best Figure Skater in the World! She was a beast! No one will ever have shit on her!
One of the absolutly best competitions in skating ever !
No chance for Manley, Thomas and Ito and all the others.
Danke, Kati !
my mom named me after her so now im Katarina too!! haha she's wonderful
simply devine!! the only one who was perfectly capable to tell a story on the ice. never seen anyone doing it that good up to today, not even my favourites sasha cohen and michelle kwan. even her jumps were great. good height perfect landing and her position in the air, just fabulous. but still yet the mistake at the loop is upsetting me :o)
she´s the best ever
This is just beautiful to watch. Although I'm not a big fan of 'dying at the end of the performance', I love overall flow of this program. She definitly feels the music well and skates as if she's dancing to the music.
The dying was THE BEST PART. Only cheesy Americans don't like that. Typical.
That was Great!
Katarina Witt ist my Hometown hero.
For that i wake up in the Night, local time after 03.00.
It's a Perfect performance of a lifetime no one could beat. music wise, her emotion her exotic beauty. She didn't have harder triple jumps but sure she attacks it amazingly. She cover's the ice immensely. I'm so hooked on her in this performance.
so extremly beautiful
Those who keep quarrelling about steroids-yes-steroids-no in front of this do really not deserve all this beauty. Thank you Katarina!
Amazing how much skating has changed in all those years, today a double in the LP would never get you a medal. She was good for her day though.
her line improved so much by this skate. pause any frame and her positions are beautiful.

Yes, but I like Nancy Kerrigan too.... ⛸️⛸️ There are some Highlights. ♥️♥️
Witt was DEFINITELY the whole package. She kept the Gold medal away my from many an American skater...all of whom were inferior...
Ummmm.....no...... if your hardest jump is the triple salchow, then you are not even in the conversation.
@@heikebohne8864 Nancy can’t possibly compete with Katarina!
Great performance!
She don't jumps the hard tripples but god what a preformance!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice dance skating. To ending i like it, beauiful...
Enchanting.

It's like compare the Olympic 100 m sprint 1956 and now.
Maybe in 30, 40 years people smile at the figure skating in 2018...
She's great!!!
