Depends on the store but I've find n64, Sega, nes and snes in store. This entire year I've added over 100 retro games all below market price. They still have issues like missing manuals or cover art but for the last year I've been eating good. Shattered dimensions, web of shadows, deadpool, Super mario rpg on snes, armored core 4, def jam ffny, and so many more all under market price
GameStop doesn’t value the same things collectors value. Boxes, manuals, repro’s, GIANT YELLOW STICKERS THAT ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE - these mean nothing to GS. They’d also need to keep up with prices. That’s one thing I see often with retail. A game that drops in price and sits on the shelf for years because it was priced at its peak.
They did that bull shit with all the DS games they used to have they would throw away the cases to make more space without considering how it would hurt their value what a joke
GameStops are a shell on what they used to be. Long ago u go in and they had walls of games now it like 20 percent games 80 percent pop culture crap. I think they are 10 years too late to start with retro now. They should of had the foresight back in the early 2000s.
I think it’s very good news that GameStop is focusing more on retro games because some areas don’t have local mom and pap retro games shops. Example I live in Florida where we had a lot of retro game shops in the area but when I travel back home were I used to live in Buffalo NY there is only one local retro shop in the whole area .
To be fair to GameStop, they're not wrong about needing to pivot. They're staring down a cliff and trying to find a rope to hold onto. Future consoles aren't going to support them, and the ThinkGeek junk isn't doing any good. They have to get past three big humps- learn who the customers for retro games are, sourcing retro games, and training staff well to prevent counterfeits and unsellable junk from eatingup their good will and buying power. Honestly, I hope they figure it out. They'll never be FuncoLand of the '90s, but they can at least carry the torch for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS4, Switch, PS5, and so on and help keep those from blowing up so badly by having a more common, accessible marketplace.

It needs to sell for cheap on ebay, so pricecharting can record it. Only when regular people get the memo, of the price drop will sellers lower their prices. it also doesn't help that when a game shop fails, everything is bought out quietly. It's always someones friend that gets the best games before the public, So without people knowing about the sale. It just wont lower prices, until it's made public knowledge. Then if people know about it they will be mad that the sale was not made available to them, it will trigger a bidding war. The problem is new games need to stop being complete trash, because it drives people back to retro. The Retro section is too crowded and everyone wants OG Games noone wants Repo Games. And one wants to pay a subscription fee for games they only play once a year.
What people don’t realize is that they were THE original goto store used retro games at one time especially once they bought out Funcoland & had TONS of gaming inventory. For whatever reason they slowly fazed that out & let all these mom & pop Game stores come in because the retro market still & always will have clientele. They should have never left the retro market in the first place, they lost so many customers afterwards.
GameStop should know already this isn’t going to work. Who’s gonna sell to them? They don’t give anything for trades which gamers know. Support your local shops, not GameStop!
Another problem that GameStop is going to have in selling retro games is all of the emulation retro devices out now. Emulation devices come in the shape of a USB sticks, handheld console, a hard drive, mini-computers, etc. And some of those emulation devices could contain ALL or nearly ALL of the games from each of the systems mentioned in this video as well as PC games and A LOT more stuff!!!. And thus, a person could buy one of those emulation devices starting at around $20 and already OWN and have access to ALL or nearly ALL of those games from ONE device. I'm talking one could have access to numbers like 60,000 to over 100, 000 games; those games WORK and play like they do on the original console in question and it could be to to where one would never have to buy retro games again. I mean ALL of those games starting at $20???? Heck yeah people are buying them!! The above mentioned emulation devices are illegal. But, they're still out there, they're easy to get; I don't think they're going away, people are buying them and this is what GameStop will have to worry about as well if they're talking about selling original games and hardware. There's only a minority of people who insist on playing games on original hardware. But, there are MORE people who don't care how they play their favorite game. So, such people would buy the above mentioned emulation devices before they get around to buying the SAME games at GameStop
I definitely think this is aimed more at the casuals, not the collectors. A lot of people still have their old systems laying around unused and this gives them a chance to rediscover some classics while giving GameStop something other than Funko Pops to sell.
I would actually go to GameStop if they had retro games in stock. Also you are right they need to hire better staff cause in my area a majority of the gaming knowledge starts with the PS4/X1 & Switch.
GameStop itself has gone downhill so much they barely saw any games anymore it's all stupid toys and plushies and shirts and everything and even when they do sell the games there's only like 20 games in the store now and they think this retro idea is going to succeed it's going to flop badly I mean watch them have no cases for the games it's just going to be disc only

I was at a Gamestop recently and I watched them screw over some lady trying to trade/sell games and a console. They screwed her over so badly. I could see she was disappointed but it looked like she needed the cash. I went to her outside and gave her my number and told her if she ever had any other games or knew people to pass my number along cuz I'll pay way more than a gamestop would.
I wanna see this stuff work too.. Though, I can only imagine this working if Gamestop trains their workers properly, tests tags and bags their merch efficiently and lastly if they let customers test the games while adding kickazz japanese vending to the store things will have a defining chance for success
I'm buying my retro stuff at gamestop. You cannot beat the buy 2 get one free and a majority of the games are cheaper by maybe 5 to 20 plus dollars. Last sale, i bought some really great ones for cheap.
A lot of games are becoming digital only going forward. Plus, plenty of gamers are playing on Steam instead of Nintendo, Xbox, or Sony. Physical media for games are being phased out since a lot of physical copies don't have a lot of resell value. Companies like GameStop buy low but sell high.
After the gamesrop employee manager blew up over the guy coming in with the picture of him on the game box as a joke, gamestop as a whole company got a bad rap for it. This is aside the fact that they give $5 for a $35 game.
This year I bought a number of disc-only games for €1 each (about a dollar) that are on Game Pass. No membership needed, at the end cheaper, I can play them whenever I want, physical media with which I support (however small) the local game shop. It hardly takes up any space if you already have a large collection and manuals hardly come with games these days, although this seems to be returning to some extent with physical indie titles. As a collector I didn’t expect to ever buy disc only, but if the price is right I’m tempted and it can be a good deal, especially if you don’t have much space (left).
What kind of retro games is Gamestop gonna sell and how much will they sell those games that they're planning to stock in those stores? I go to this store called Vintage Stock to buy retro games not from Gamestop though. Sometimes, I go online to buy games I can't find anywhere in stores and flea markets.
Your a true gamer & have legit passion for the gaming community bro. This video is great, just you riffing off the cuff and comes across so naturally! Hope you continue to do more like this!
I was impressed that they're gonna carry a Gameboy clone system exclusive to them called ModRetro Chromatic. They're even gonna have their own games for it.
I don't forsee people buying those in-store. The general public that steps into Gamestop isn't going to know what it is or care to pay $200 for it. There's also a Game Boy Color clone named the FPGBC that's half the price.
If they ended up going out of business I wouldn’t feel bad that’s how a free market works and it’s a result of their shitty and unfair business practices.
@@matthewnikitas8905 I for one disagree, I would rather have a Retro focused GameStop with ALL their faults than the ONLINE ONLY/LIVE SERVICE/YOU OWN NOTHING DIGITAL FUTURE that has infested my beloved hobby.

They’re trying too much.. looking from the inside out or outside in??!? They are trying to buy cards and now this.. they are truly trying to take away the small shops away
Mine in Corona CA is a total loss..so far. Easily 85 to 90% are in generic Gamestop cases with the prices being similar to complete on eBay. They had Mega Man x2 for $99 just for laughs had them show it to me. The label had a giant tear on it. $99 in great condition that would be an OK price with the giant tear on the label it’s a complete loss. - and then when they showed me MegaMan X2 games in the drawer that aren’t even represented with cases on the shelf. Not that those are good value, but they’re just so unorganized there.😮
You are spot on and wise of the condition Game-stop has found themselves in. They over charge the general consumer and are not good enough for the real retro gamer so they find themselves in a position where they are not going to succeed. They need to learn to cut back on prices to compensate for the lack of service they offer or get employees and management to change the way the stores are run.
Wow, GameStop Retro is happening and opening stores across the U.S.?! Please GameStop Retro, I really hope you sell a variety of CIB physical copies of old school classic retro video game titles on N64, GameCube, Wii, GB/GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP!! Please, GameStop, make this happen (like what you used to do back then before 2012), that way, it will be a good thing!! I'm definitely planning on going to these stores so I can embrace and relive the nostalgia!! 🎮🕹👾🤘🤟✌😌😊🤗😄😎👍🤙☯✨❤💛💯
Nah I found some grails in GameStop since they’ve went re-retro… if they low offer your trade in you don’t have to accept it you know🤷🏽♂️ shop smart and use em for what they’re good for
I mean $60 for GameCube twilight princess is a steal compared to market prices… if it’s over priced or priced at market you don’t have to buy it look for the deals simple
The thing is GameStop will probably still give horrible trade in value and barely any better store credit. I also hated back when I'd go there and they would sell me a 'gutted' copy as new and full price. Honestly this is likely a physical store for selling their huge stock of 'retro' games in their warehouses.
I do think it’s a good idea for area that don’t have any retro game stores. We are lucky in WA to have tons of retro game stores but there are tons of states that don’t have any or they are a few far between.
The thing is, the places that don't have retro markets don't have them because the local economy is too small to support it. Corporate retro market isn't going to change any of that.
There are two Gamestop Retro stores within a 100 mile radius of my location and both are over state lines. They aren't going to do this in places that don't have the local market for it.
I definitely don’t see this working. I still go to GameStop sometimes for modern games, but I have other stores I use for retro games that I know I will be getting quality and I get fair value for trades and selling
With Gamestop I'll only buy games new in the store or pre-order. I can't imagine trying to buy retro games for a collection from them. Gamestop as a company has just shown a total lack of commitment to provide a premium or even a consistent shopping experience for their customers. I hope they turn it around but I won't hold my breath. As a side note, it's crazy that in the year of our Lord, 2024, people are still trading in valuable games to Gamestop. Ebay is so easy and user friendly, anyone could hop on there and easily make 3X what Gamestop would give.
Well this is obviously only in United States (not sure about Canada where I live) but yeah, this is not the first time GameStop ever tried to do this with retro games in general and yeah I don't think it's gonna to work.
I already got most of the retro games I want from a long time ago. I got most of them from Gamestop when they were super cheap. Now it looks like they are selling them for way more, so no. Gamestop messed up before throwing out the manuals and boxes. I always want them CIB. I think they did that to save space. It's like more people are buying digital, but now Gamestop wants to sell physical stuff again. So there is an audience for both. I have always liked to game physical. Prices are higher now. So unless I find a great deal and its something I want, I don't really feel like going there. Like you said, I hope it works out for the consumer.
I stopped shopping at GS since 2020 but I don't really think there is much of a difference in between the local game store and the local gamestop. In fact, I think you have a better chance finding a deal at gamestop over a local game store. Any game store by me just overprices every title with any value and the trade in/cash values are either just as bad or gamestop or worse. At least with GS you know what your getting before you go in, if nothing else, it is at least transparent. 5 different LGS will give you 5 different prices for the same game. Speaking on conventions, I myself vend some VG conventions and I can tell you that the same story above applies here. Most of the vendors have awful prices, they only buy certain vgs for cash and the trade credit is worse. Will GS retro work? Probably not, but I do think it's a good idea in concept, just that it will be lacking in execution.
I want this to succeed, but I don't know if Gamestop as a company will put the time and money into properly training their staff. But I do think that some individual stores could be good if the ones at their stores are passionate about the hobby and want to go it right. I'll absolutely check them out and see what they have, but I'm going to be very, very cautious about what I do end up getting, if anything.
Already off to a rocky start. Certain stores carry, certain stores don’t. Competing with eBay market nonetheless, I’d rather order the condition I prefer and have it shipped to my door step
I think that would be cool if they carried video games for systems like the original Xbox and other older ones. They only need to see if cartridges are real.
I haven't been to Game Stop since I found that 2 retro stores are still alive. But my cousins say it's more pop culture crap 💩 than games now. Anyway do they have the know how for retro gaming? I doubt it.🤔
I have heard they took a few stores that they said were retro..went there and wasn't impressed by their selection and they also are inconsistent with customer service. I have found better customer service for the most part at my local independent retro game shops here .. I don't see myself going there except to redeem my monthly five dollar coupon but to be honest.. it's hard to get excited for it... I'll stick to eBay and my local video game shops and the flea market shops.
I think the only way it would work is if they focused on selling retro games for retro consoles that are currently trending like the Analogue Pocket which I think is a complete rip off especially with how long they hold your money and how much they fake their stock being limited, but hey if we're talking about banking on peoples' nostalgia I have to say it. And yeah Gamestop focusing so much on merch is so lame. I think they could have made a better come back if they focused on making exclusive physical releases for games that wouldn't normally have one, similar to how Limited Run Games does it; only LRG is horrible, holds your money for over a year, quality has gone down the gutter, artificial scarcity, not to mention the cost cutting measures such as using CDRs for the game D instead of 3DO pressed disks and STILL haven't sent out replacements or made a public statement regarding that matter. Gamestop has the potential to do it better and quicker, but they wanna focus on Funko Pops and Anime merchandise instead. Ah well, at least we still have Fangamer.
Lol on that note of not training employees to spot fakes. I recently traded in shin megami 5 for switch because I bought the new version. Figured I didn't really need it anymore. When I got home I thought it seemed cheap for the new version. Turns out they traded in the new version as well so I got $35 trade-in value for the original version.
I'll only ever go back to retro gaming if the prices are reasonable. Nowadays, people expect gamers to pay almost as much for a retro game that they payed for a modern game, sometimes more. No thank you. Indies today are almost superior in every way to AAA retro games. And those indie games are far more reasonably priced. I'm not paying a significantly inflated price tag for nostalgia.
GameStop sees the writing on the wall when it comes to modern gaming it’s only going to get worse and people realize we can just play old games Gen Z and Gen Alpha are embracing retro games over modern games they will emulate the games or some will go all in on buying the actual hardware and physical games
They just gotta get rid of those awful price stickers and the clear stickers pretending to be sealed. And keep the dvmn cases while offering more for CIB games traded in. The moment they take seriously collecting is the moment GameStop would surge again. But to receive a cartridge only for over msrp is going to fail.
Going to be a total mess for all the reasons you just described. The one positive I can think of is Gamestop was/is one of the few market checks against third-party price gouging, and help me get a lot of DS and Vita games for reasonable prices for example. Guess we’ll see how it’s implemented. Would love a reason to get excited about a Gamestop trip again.
the only way to be successfull in this for gamestop, is to start to republish retrogames like retrobit does. If they do it for saturn, ps and nintendo console they can get some profit out of it.
I rather continue buying retro games on Ebay, I stopped shopping at GameStop since 2017. At first I was excited about this but now I really don't care. Good luck Gamestop this isn't going to work
What a joke. The only reason why Gamestop is doing this is to reduce costs but it will fail. Young people want new and hip gaming equipement and games not their father’s or grand father’s oldies. And online gaming is on fire.
I just looked online and they don’t even specify if they’re selling a game loose or complete so that to me is a huge sign they have no idea what the hell they’re doing
I hate to say it im actually happy they are doing this i dont care about new games at all besides like limited run. I know how to check for fakes mostly into disc based stuff anyway
They're already doing this online, but no this will not work. He's right you eill not get any value for your retro games. They will give you a lowball price that os considered whst the game is worth from a used standard. This is because people are going back to retro games right now snd it's hot. So they're trying to get in on it. The employees don't care it's hard enough just getting the right service for new stuff. I have some games i know sre worth sone money and i would rather not trade them. They're in very good condition i keep stuff protected.
I also forgot to mention in my video, that most of these retro games won’t even be sold in stores. You’ll have to order them online. Snes genesis etc will only have certain games at stores that reach a price threshold for the store

Do they have the shelf space? Would love to see
I was impressed that they're gonna carry a Gameboy clone system exclusive to them called ModRetro Chromatic. They're even gonna have their own games for it.
I don't forsee people buying those in-store. The general public that steps into Gamestop isn't going to know what it is or care to pay $200 for it. There's also a Game Boy Color clone named the FPGBC that's half the price.
does that include 32x/sega cd? no atari or 3do stuff, no one will buy. but i didnt see PSP in that screenshot of logos either
It's their only chance of survival, so I hope it works out. I would probably visit the store again if they got more retro games.
@@tgrujic1965 There are plenty of small businesses around that sell retro games I would rather my money go to a place like that than a greedy multi million dollar corporation
@@matthewnikitas8905 I don't know where you live, but here in PA there a no mom and pop game shops anywhere near me.
They’re trying too much.. looking from the inside out or outside in??!? They are trying to buy cards and now this.. they are truly trying to take away the small shops away
I think they are trying to survive… they know as a gamer there’s nothing better than Retro games.
Not that those are good value, but they’re just so unorganized there.😮
gamestop should have game disk repair.i get scratches, and that day, the one disk was broken
Well I still won't be shopping at that place.. they open the new stuff.. grosse.
@@GamesfromtheGrave good point
Crazy to think PS3 is heading into the retro label, if it's not already. I think PSP might already be "retro", I think? . Just wild.
PSP is going to be 20 years old this December.
I think GameStop was inspired by Generation Z's nostalgic UA-cam videos. It's not a bad thing to make up for lost times, but it has to work.
Ebay is so easy and user friendly, anyone could hop on there and easily make 3X what Gamestop would give.
with mom and pop shops already selling retro games for decades now ..theres no reason to buy retro games from gamestop
Lucky I got a Mom and Shop game store near me.
Gamestop should stock the evercade and all the aftermarket Dreamcast games.
I went to the supposed Retro GS over at Tukwila by the Barnes and Noble and it left a lot to be desired
Honestly Gamestop should have pivoted from selling games to doing repairs to consoles and computers, as well as selling games and gaming accessories.
I saw some older games at GameStop but I don't think they'll be able to compete with retro game stores.
I see some games now at my local game stop and find the prices for them to be more like eBay prices and so for me I will only look for now
I think that would be cool if they carried video games for systems like the original Xbox and other older ones. They only need to see if cartridges are real.
Kicked out of Gamestop for not wearing a mask, never been back. Don't care if they close.
Have to admit, you make some good points here. Still, I want this to work so I guess I’ll put up with it 🤷♂️
I recently ordered an expensive GBA game from Gamestop that was a repro.
I haven't been to Game Stop since I found that 2 retro stores are still alive. But my cousins say it's more pop culture crap 💩 than games now. Anyway do they have the know how for retro gaming? I doubt it.🤔
I quit going to Gamestop. They barely have any games. They make the employees hound you with questions. And the whole experience is just annoying tbh
Game Stop eventually be out of business...
Possibly, they have been smart adding new additions to their store, but those same additions turned me away as a gamer.
I think Steam and PC gaming will end up putting older video game retailers out to pasture. Wukong just came out and it's digital only.
I can think of 4 billion reasons why they won’t
@@The_RadicalOneSadly I think it’s too little too late I see them doing this as a form of damage control.
No they want not any time soon.
GameStop sees the writing on the wall when it comes to modern gaming it’s only going to get worse and people realize we can just play old games Gen Z and Gen Alpha are embracing retro games over modern games they will emulate the games or some will go all in on buying the actual hardware and physical games
Gamestop could of been rolling in the dough, if they would of continued to take in the old school consoles
I dont think this retro pivot is for hardcore collectors just people.. who want to play the old games regardless of condition as long as it plays
They just gotta get rid of those awful price stickers and the clear stickers pretending to be sealed. And keep the dvmn cases while offering more for CIB games traded in. The moment they take seriously collecting is the moment GameStop would surge again. But to receive a cartridge only for over msrp is going to fail.
i agree but the 4 for 20 deal seems decent
No body wants to get pay $7.25 at GameStop 😂
Haven't shopped at one in twenty years and I didn't enjoy it back when I did. They could offer free hamburgers and beer and I still wouldn't go.
That’s happening to Walmart, I don’t get excited to go there
Going to be a total mess for all the reasons you just described. The one positive I can think of is Gamestop was/is one of the few market checks against third-party price gouging, and help me get a lot of DS and Vita games for reasonable prices for example. Guess we’ll see how it’s implemented. Would love a reason to get excited about a Gamestop trip again.
I’ve bought DS games there in the past what I can’t stand though is that they throw away all the cases when they get them in trades
In my area they have GTA 1 and 2 for the PS1 thats only $10 so we'll see
the only way to be successfull in this for gamestop, is to start to republish retrogames like retrobit does. If they do it for saturn, ps and nintendo console they can get some profit out of it.
Back in the day they used to give good money but that was a long long time ago
I will search any game store that has retro games. GameStop a mom and pop shop anyway even Walmart if they did it
I rather continue buying retro games on Ebay, I stopped shopping at GameStop since 2017. At first I was excited about this but now I really don't care. Good luck Gamestop this isn't going to work
@@Xman-lg6sn I hear ya
What a joke. The only reason why Gamestop is doing this is to reduce costs but it will fail. Young people want new and hip gaming equipement and games not their father’s or grand father’s oldies. And online gaming is on fire.
Arcade Legacy in Cincinnati, OH
I think it will work but just took too long to start. They are not catering to the collector, so we have to keep that in mind.
I just looked online and they don’t even specify if they’re selling a game loose or complete so that to me is a huge sign they have no idea what the hell they’re doing
@@matthewnikitas8905 that has always been the case. Even with current gen and something I wish they would fix.
here I am running stealth on horseback throwing grenades all over the placee!!💥💥
This is total horse shit GameStop retro is a joke
Customer brings in perfect condition in box NES
Gamestop: 'best I can do is $20 and a $5 gift card that can only be use on purchases over $1000'
GameStop trying to be like GoodWill LOL
😂 😆
Well said my friend
It will work if they don't some seem them a collectors price
Your Dog avatar makes me laugh for some reason. 😆
