I agree gamestop had to evolve. I noticed the demand for retro exploded during covid. The demographics and economy has made us "go back" to less expensive and lower tech entertainment. Along with that dopamine hit of a successful hunt, deal, play through, and esp nostalgia. Physical media cannot die and I love this about us. Good luck to them
@@The_RadicalOne I guess it didn't do the business needed to survive. I was shocked because it was a local favorite in a smaller Texan town in the middle of nowhere. The closest thing to it was FYE, but Hastings was bigger with a larger selection of all media. It was the last resort if you couldn't find something anywhere else. The book selection, vinyls, used Vhs/music cassettes, dvds, video games were great because it was the only place to find things that were kind of obscure. That doesn't even include the instraments, electronics, collectables, anime stuff, and huge book/manga section they had. If someone hasn't ever been to a decent Hastings then I'm not sure what I could compare it to. Maybe like a Books a Million/FYE/Game Exchange/Hot Topic/Your local music store and a coffee shop rolled into one big place. But it seemed busy pretty much always. I guess profit margins in this line of products are razor thin and any turbalance could end you quick.
Hi Reggie I'm based in the UK and our equivalent to Gamestop is CeX, which has been selling retro games again for around 10 years and it seems to work for the most part. You do see some mis labelled games and repros every now n then, just about having a keen eye and spotting it before you buy. Great video dude
It’s not gonna work. Went to Southcenter location today, no Saturn, no Sega CD, no N64, no Dreamcast. Just a few Xbox 360 and ps3 games in repro cases no manuals.
GameStop screwed up when they took away retro games twice this is their 3rd time and I feel like they know they screwed up last time, it will be hard for them to keep up at this time. It’s not like there’s retro games everywhere it’s 2024. I just wish them the best. We need them to stay up and running so good for them to keep trying.
In Texas we have Game Xchange which has filled the void left behind by Gamestop. Much better prices on used games and have everything from Atari 2600 to PS5, used DVDs and Blu-rays, CDs, trading cards, collectables, etc
I’m ready for all the heat lol I know I think it can work and I think we all should want it to. But I definitely know there’s many of you who disagree with me 😅
I live in an area where we lost most of our gamestops. It's not fun going from 6 gamestops down to 1 in 4 years. I'm a big switch collector and its getting harder and harder to find games without having to pay after market prices if you missed a game a launch. Gamestops were a great way to find games when they would go down in price or finding them used. I also do not have a decent toy store that sells action figures and gamestop in my area is the only way to preorder action figures. So I will be sad to see them go if they do.
In Vancouver BC there are some amazing retro spots but they're all in the suburbs so it takes forever to get there either driving or taking the sky train, I'd love my local Gamestop to have some retro stuff but I've never seen anything from their business practices that leads me to believe they'll be able to do this efficiently but we'll see!
Aren't the physical games just a disc with a product key to allow you to download the actual game? Or are just referring to the previous generation console games?
The one thing I’ll say is that I’m glad they’re starting to price some of their retro games fairly for 6th and 7th gen, which I appreciate. I’d love to buy a GameCube game from GameStop for under $60 in 2024
3:10 remember the speedy diver who would always put out a video on GameStop dumpster diving? Dude would find consoles occasionally and other cool stuff that GameStop employees threw away and some of those games he found were brand new. It made me wonder if GameStop won't allow employees to take stuff home that is being thrown out in the trash.
Man when I did my DS gems series several years ago gamestop used to have amazing DS selection. Now they have taken that all out. I had a moment the other day of feeling very sad about that.
I think Gamestop being a national store it will be hard for them to handle the retro model, which I think a big part of will be their return policy but also the volatility of pricing. I know people will take advantage of that model, whether its swapping games on them (fraud of course) or using repros, they will have to really train their staff on finding fakes and handling returns to make sure its the correct and exact returned game. I think a smaller independent can handle these issues better than a national game store that has disinterested employees. But I hope Im wrong, I love retro physical games, and frankly the more the better
Thx for exposing game sharks at conventions. Yep best deals done before doors officially open! Not enough inventory other than sports and commons for game stop reteo. Best stuff already picked for yrs now
Well it doesn’t much matter to me since they’re only doing this at like 4 or 5 of their premium locations none of which are close to me🤷🏻♂️ This should be a company store wide initiative but I don’t think that’s gonna be the case.
GameStop was the first ever game store I've been to in the early 2000s when they opened a location in my old neighborhood. It was great until some idiots from the neighborhood decided to rob the store and killed an officer who was buying games for his kid. GameStop closed that location and moved out the neighborhood. I have an affinity for GameStop as my first game store so I want to see the franchise do well.
Velocity is the name of the game but retro is all about scarcity to drive price appreciation - they’ll need to add hardware repair or try to corner the market to be a price maker
I dread the day Gamestop closes and Walmart/Target/Best Buy stop selling physical games. Physical game buyers will truly be at the mercy of the 'limited run' model. Amazon and Ebay sellers will be the only way to truly mass buy physical games.
All the videos i've seen just show 2-4ft wire racks with games you'd find in the $1 bins under the table cloths at conventions. People are leaning on the brand recognition of gamestop to think it's going to be the rebirth of funcoland, but none of us are that lucky. There are too many amazing independent retro game shops to even consider going to the adhesive ridden husk of a lease that is gamestop. Looking at the crooked sale signs tells me a lot at how they run their stores. How you do anything is how you'll do everything. The profit margin on new titles is already slim and hardware even lower. The rise in overhead costs will do gamestop in long before any customer purchasing habits will.
These places will be quickly cleared out of any cool inventory by resellers. I'm sure it'll just become a spot for too common, mediocre titles (not even the inexpensive staple stuff because that gets cleared out too) I don't really know how GameStop can compete with already independent, specialized retro stores with knowledgeable employees other than buying them out like they did with regular retail stores back in the day. I'm honestly kind of worried for the small business who already depend on their niche service and specialty. I'm sure the casual gamer who sees a retro GameStop will go in thinking it's a new thing because a lot of gamers aren't into retro gaming.
Gamestop is betting on 360 and PS3 games being next up for casual collectors, and it’s not a bad gamble in my opinion. The people that grew up with those consoles are at the age now to have enough nostalgia and disposable income to want to rebuy those titles. As for the “true retro” stuff like Snes/Nes/N64, idk. For me personally, that stuff has always been too expensive to be of any interest to me.
GameStop retro is just a small piece to their overall revamp plans. It provides another avenue for retro games for gamers and collectors. Competition is good for business and GameStop for me has been the ultimate shopping destination for decades! Power to the Players 💥💪
Meh. It's way too little and far too late. It'll end up being a place where you can buy repros for collector prices. There are a few local places, only one in the same city as me and the rest forty plus minutes away, where I would much rather conduct business.
Look, I love getting games at GameStop. But, it was and always will be a failing business. I worked there for years and leaving was the best thing that ever happened. There is nobody there motivated, the lack is because they don’t hire people who are passionate. Yes it’s business, but you have to hire people not because of a business background but inspired and enthusiastic to work and promote. I’ve seen a kid poop on the floor and the manager make a temp clean it up. I wasnt working there then, but it was nasty and not cool the manager did that. While working there I’ve seen worse too.
Yeah, GME's not a good investment but it's not going anywhere either, esp w/their PSA hustle. I've only started buying slabs bc gme is competing well on market price. As for retro, I'm def sifting out those rare and uncommons during their 50% off sales to pay for what i buy.
Gamestop has its struggles but so do full on retro gaming stores. Retro game stores can slap me with a low trade in credit just as gamestop for example to make it short took i about 1200 in pricecharting value and all 4 stores offered 300 to 325 in credit and of course top shelf items. They look up sold comps and go by the smallest comp. If you want to speak about for the better of the "gaming community" than all these stores should be called out. Marking torn up or deep ware games as minty game sold comps or even selling like a loose pokemon black 2 for 140 when you can get one complete for 120 to 140 on ebay! Even the reprinted labeled cases as cib prices and so on, all retro video game stores aren't sunshine and rainbows either.
Not all people just want something to be angry about. For me at least, it's the loss of money for investing in physical games and consoles, only for the powers that be to shut down the servers, and you wind up with hardware that is obsolete and no longer works. Oh well. I'd go to Gamestop to see what they have retro. But not buy the retro games.
Gamestop retro is bad there selling the games so cheap people are buying them and reselling them $100 of dollars so the people are making $100 of dollars off of GameStop there losing so much money
GameStop and I don't have a relationship. GameStop is a corporation and at the top there are greedy people who don't care if I live or die. Literally. Sorry not going to temper my expectations. I don't owe anything to GameStop. Some of your viewers have minds of their own.

Thanks for having me on! It was fun getting to talk about this topic and examine the potential outcomes!
There's a bunch of mom and pop places in town Nick. I'm gonna have to show you my spots
They take such poor care of their inventory so my expectations are very low. I prefer to support smaller independent stores.

Shout out to Hastings. Freaking miss that place
