It's funny because relatively speaking apart from the USA during the past few quads Amanars aren't actually done by many still. Like yes, you see it more often now, but it's still a small fraction.
Chellsie Memmel is by far one of my fave gymnasts. She, in my opinion is a near-perfect balance between power and artistry. She's powerful like Alicia Sacramone, but she can still swing bars with artistry like Nastia and has a very nice line, not to mention also that she's battled injury and has come back equally as strong mentally and physically. Amazing.
@@adamtravis9380 I agree 100%! The thing I’m looking forward to with her comeback is seeing her artistry now that she’s matured. Honestly looking at her recent videos I’m begging to see her artistry and her old gymnastics is starting to undesirable who she is as a gymnast more now I think.
2012 was their best year for vaulting because 5 of the gymnasts were capable of an Amanar but 4/5 competed it which is still huge but compared to 2016 Rio only 2/5 could compete a yurchenko even though Gabby competed it in 2012. They have got a bit stronger now though but 2012 was their best year for vaulting

Maybe she doesn’t want him too. I mean all athletes are different and need different things from their coaches during practice and/or competition. Some need reassurance and comfort and some need to be left alone. So maybe Nastia was more the latter and didn’t want her dad to give her a kiss when she messed up 🤷🏼♀️
I am watching all of Chellsie Memmel's archived meets as she shares her adult gymnastics journey during the COVID pandemic in 2020. It is heartbreaking that the system broke her but it is wonderful to see her amazing form is retained a dozen years later. That she can train extremely difficult skills with intelligence and respect for her body while lovingly parenting her young children is heartwarming. Imagine if she gets that secondary nominative US spot for beam if we do have a Tokyo 2020-21ish games! She will join Chuso in literally reshaping the sport! Elite athlete mothers unite!
I love the fact that age isn't being treated like an issue in WAG anymore, in the 2007 Visa's there was some NBC fluff where Al was saying that Nastia (17 at the time) was basically worn out and at a disadvantage because of her age. Now we have the example of many female gymnasts who keep on thriving for many many years, just like the men do in MAG. I love it.
Not quite related, but just want to say I LOVE both Shawn and Nastia's leos+hair in this comp. Shawn's weaved braids were super cute, and I love her off-shoulder leo design. I've noticed she wears this design a lot, and it makes it look like a leotard-ball gown mix! It's almost her signature look, as I don't see other gymnasts do the cut. Also impressed that she made orange work lol. And as usual, Nastia looked pretty in pink. Does anyone know if there's a professional makeup artist/hair stylist that puts the gymnasts' looks together before the comp?
I love that Shawn still visits Chow. Nice to see with how many bad things are going on in USA gymnastics in the last few years. They really had and have a great coach and athlete relationship. Now even a friendship.

It sounds crazy now, and even a few years ago when you posted that originally....but the Code of Points changes every quad, and this one had some crazy scoring issues.... Nastia Liukin scored over 17 on UB! Just crazy.
1:02:00 - Is it just me, or should that mat be pulled more towards the front of the bars? It seems to be at a place where the gymnast could dismount with their feet half-on and half-off the mat, causing a fall!?
guys plz stop hating on Nastia. a lot of people say that shes too tall and her form is horrible. i mean she didnt have the best performance at visas, but at the olympics, she won five medals. i think her form on bars is beautiful and on beam, shes so graceful. on floor her form isnt the best on that double front, but when she does her twisting skills, her form is basically perfect. also on her leaps, she gets great hight and her flexibility is practicall perfect, she hits 180 degree splits on each one. on vault, she does things easier than some of the others, but if she does something easy with perfect form and a stuck landing, it would be better than if she did an Amanar vault and possibly injure herself. also, you dont have to compare Nastia and Shawn. i really like both of their gymnastics. shawns tumbling on floor is so difficult but she does it so effortlessly. on vault, she does a really hard Amanar vault and she has so much power and hight. bars is a weaker event for Shawn but she is still really good at it. her dismount, the Ray is rated G in cop. on beam, i think she had the hardest routine in the world. so good.❤
Ty for telling me what Shawn Johnson's beam routine score was since the video cut out and there was no way of knowing what her score was.I checked it out and she got a 16.050
ivana hong turned 15 on dec 11th in 2007... that's the minimum age allowed to compete at worlds as gymnasts were grandfathered because it is used as a qualifier for the Olympics... she'd be 16, just barely, by the end of 2008.
Notice around 29:30 u can see the commentators behind nastia and Shawn. At that exact moment they were talking about Shawn and nastia both. I wonder if they could hear the commentators?
It's still considered difficult. Which is pretty amazing considering they were doing DTY`s in the 80's lol. I'm shocked that we're still seeing FTY's in major world competitions.
I have an inkling that nastia didn’t have good nutrition because she struggled so much with endurance and kaitlyn ohashi trained with her and said they had challenges to eat 500 calories a day...???
it’s so crazy when Shawn was hitting the floor you couldn’t hear it at all but nowadays you can hear the girls SLAMMING into the floor because of how the sport has progressed..it must be so bad for their legs!!
Bridget messed up on bars in qualifications and Marta didn't usually put people up in TF if they messed up in quals. (See also Mohini Bhardwaj getting thrown onto the beam lineup because Marta refused to use Courtney McCool after Kupets tweaked her leg.)
I have a couple things to say. My FIRST thing is about Nastia. Why is Tim so hateful. What she does is hard and it's annoying to keep hearing him repeat her floor wasn't as good. Are u doing FIVE hard gymnastics passes basically in a row? No, you sitting on your butt hating on people. And why are people saying Nastias vault was better than Shawns? Shawn got a higher sore because of her difficulty, even though Nastia might've had better lines. TWO. Alicia Sacramoni. Like, after her beam routine he said that her beam routine wasn't very good but it's the best she could do? Like come on, again, ur sitting on ur butt, you job is to inform no to criticize AMAZING gymnast. And Shawn. Shawn and Nastia is like Simone and Madison Kocian. Shawn and Simone have the power and heighth and Madison and Nastia are good at bars and beam and have beautiful lines. I guess my point is we shouldn't critique other gymanst because we can't do have of what the do and this is coming from a competitive gymnast.
Difficulty helps with the score but the gymnast have to perform the vault really well. So what Tim is saying is that Nastia performed hers better to help her execution score.
Nastia had a great landing but had a supreme lack in both height and distance, where as shawn gets great height and distance and had a soso landing. Also nastias vault is SO EASY compared to shawns
I don't know the scoring specifics for this quad, or if this was even a possibility... but if Nastia connected her Pak to something, and swapped out her low-to-high bar transitions for something a little more complicated like Maloney and a Van Leuuwen (Chow/Chow-half ect, whatever, just not a stalder counter) how much would her D-score have gone up by? Or, would it not have mattered with all of her pirouetting difficulty? I just wonder how high a potential D-score could have been for her.
i'm not entirely sure...but i do know that the 2008 quad was not as connection heavy as the later quads. here they still counted 10 (?) skills instead of 8 and so these routines were honestly just a marathon, especially on floor with the 5 passes instead of 4. nowadays you really rack up difficulty score by connecting everything together (which is why suni is so successful on bars - almost her whole freakin routine was connected) but here everybody was just chucking the most difficult stuff they could do, which is why you see shawn johnson doing like two release moves when she wasn't great at bars. i'm also not sure if it would've been physically possible for nastia to connect her pak with something. she always had such an arch in her back and was so close to the bar when she caught it, i don't think she could have connected anything out of it. she wasn't tall by non-gymnast standards but marta never let them move the bars around to accommodate their height so she might not have been able to do any shaposh-type low to high transitions without hitting her feet. sorry, i'm 4 years late to the party LOL
Comments section a little aggressive anybody says something against Nastia and people go crazy. Like everyone is allowed their opinion and guess what Nastia does not care if you like her or not so let people say what they want about over scoring or sloppy execution. Nobody is being nasty and calling her fat or stupid so get over it.
Annabelle P. Nastia put up big numbers since 2005 and people loved her gymnastics and her lean lines. She always finished in the top ranks on the podium, so people talked about her going to the olympics basically from the beginning. Then Shawn came up in 2007 and they started to compare them to each other. Which is ridiculous if you ask me, because they couldn't be more different.
I don't know why Bridget's salute bothers me, In my opinion, I like gymnasts who have a slight arc in the backs during a salute. No one attack me😥😥😥😥😭😭😭😭😭😧
Isn't it crazy that in 2008 Shawn was one of the only gymnasts that performed the Amanar, and now so many do it.

I think Shawn Johnson and Sam Peszek look very similar, their body types and their gymnastics
Yes I agree! They’re both shorter and very strong and powerful.
Anyone know the music in the background around the time they are showing Shawn on bars? :)
I couldn't hear over nbc yapping.
What’s Shawn’s beam score? Good job in editing the video, whoever you are. *sigh
16.050
Comments section a little aggressive anybody says something against Nastia and people go crazy. Like everyone is allowed their opinion and guess what Nastia does not care if you like her or not so let people say what they want about over scoring or sloppy execution. Nobody is being nasty and calling her fat or stupid so get over it.
Alicia on beam always seems to focus too much on arm movements. They don’t add anything for me and are quite distracting.
i think the same
like a robot! LOL
Can't believe in 2008, vault was the US' weakness! I JUST remembered (don't know why) that Shawn's Amanar was the only one back then!
Lol what was up with the crew playing clips and the commentators not knowing which they were?
Love shawns routine but I hate the music... I feel like there’s no beat to follow.
Michaela Leach I’ve always found that there are parts where I cannot hear any music at all 😂 It’s too quiet in places
I love Shan Johnson
Chellsie and Ivana's vaults were underscored. Nastia and shawn were OVERSCORED
Nah shawns was but nastias was definitely underscored
men! the days on it was possible to see a score of 17,050
shawn! love her leo here!
Does anyone know what happens to the coach's gym when they travel with the gymnast? Like Chow, what happens to his gym?
They have other coaches there............
+Kayla jones Ikr so obvious...😑
No need to be a jerk about it.
Who thinks Andrew should make a reaction video to old shawn videos?
Hell yeah
I absolutely love Shawn’s leo here
At 1:10:23, why does that guy think its ok to try to give shawn a hug while she’s bending over, what a creep
You Thought That’s Andy Memmell, Chellsie’s dad and coach.
Thecatspajamas891 right? Not remotely creepy. Another athletes dad 😂. I read the comment from the you thought person too and was like !!?
what is the big deal about nastia (I'm new to gymnastics)
Annabelle P. Nastia put up big numbers since 2005 and people loved her gymnastics and her lean lines. She always finished in the top ranks on the podium, so people talked about her going to the olympics basically from the beginning. Then Shawn came up in 2007 and they started to compare them to each other. Which is ridiculous if you ask me, because they couldn't be more different.
I don't know why Bridget's salute bothers me, In my opinion, I like gymnasts who have a slight arc in the backs during a salute. No one attack me😥😥😥😥😭😭😭😭😭😧
I love Natias :) #PinkNation
Does anyone else watching Shawn on floor with her dancing think of Gabby Douglas?
Durade sandstorm was playing during warmups lmao
i actually rly like shawns bars
Yeah so crazy solid. Legs together, toes pointed to perfection!
I love Nastia's leo, and yes marloessss10
