The Dollmaker reminds me a lot of a book called "Behind the Attic Wall." There was a small sub-genre of ghost stories aimed at girls in the 90s, and this and "Stonewords" were my favorites.
I was expecting the Tale of the Dream Girl in your top 10. It’s not in your top 31 at all!? It’s often considered the most well-written episode of the series!
Ghastly Grinner is one of the best episodes. I love the dynamic between the two very different friends and the urgency of the mission to find Frankie's father. Midnight Madness is such a classic episode, I loved the motif of the old theater and the references to Nosferatu. It was a great use of Dr. Vink.Christopher Heyerdhal, Nosferatu, was GREAT in the Haunting Hour episode 'Fear Never Knocks." "Super Specs" has one of the all-time classic cruel twist endings. Susan turning into a doll is one of the all-time creepy images from the show. ( Chelsea does a good Phoebe!) But yes, Dark Music is probably the darkest episode ever made.
Dude, you explaining the premise for the dollmaker just hit me with a flood of memories watching that episode. I remember wathing a very few patch of ayaotd episodes on a tablet while hanging on a blanketed hamock! Those were good times indeed and I thank you for bringing those memories back to me.
I could see 5/10 episodes here as tops so our taste is somewhat similar. I'd put super specs as #1 and definitely keep dollmaker, grinner and dark music. Marginally keep thirteenth floor and laughing in the dark. I like whispering walls, vacant lot, curious camera and jake and the leprachaun for top 10 although arguments could be made for pinball, chameleons, watcher's woods, unfinished painting. Super specs is #1 for the most original mind bending story.

The Midnight Madness episode is reminding me of the music video of Haddaway's What Is Love, not only because of the video's horror movie aesthetic but also the black kid looks JUST like Haddaway.

Man, I have so many vague memories of a few of these, particularly The Thirteenth Floor and the faceless aliens, the Renegade Virus and the virus's weird look, and the Dollmaker, it's dollhouse and what happened to Susan. Fitting that your number one episode is the one I remember the most, though I will say right now, I don't have a fear of clowns, and quite frankly, I find the recent trend of everyone taking it as a given that clowns are inherently scary to be rather annoying. Not that I don't begrudge anyone inherently disturbed by clowns, but I really think people should take a step back and remember why clowns exist in the first place. I'm also not against making clowns intentionally scary, either, like they did with Zeebo the Clown, but I get the feeling that it, along with Pennywise the Dancing Clown (as well as maybe John Wayne Gacy), might have gave people the wrong impression about clowns in general. Despite this, Laughing in the Dark is still an episode that sticks with me to this day, enough to make me want to revisit it actually. Maybe I'll try and give some of these episodes a watch next Halloween.

Watched Beetlejuice a couple nights ago and the second I saw the waiting room concept, I agreed. Someone saw that movie and remembered the massive bureaucracy based plot. I get the feeling ol' BJ would have had a radio station for those in the Afterlife instead of the dry and hard to read handbook, but lost it making incredibly offensively sexual jokes. And yes, if you only remember the cartoon show, Beetlejuice WAS a very perverted character. EDIT: I'm SOOOOO glad someone made the "Weegee" joke. I wouldn't expect Pushing Up Roses to, but I was still a little disappointed.
If there's one thing I miss, it's how incredibly inappropriate source material was for the target audience of the cartoons they made from them. Beetlejuice flat out gropes (or at least mime-gropes) Geena Davis's character multiple times. And let's not forget Rambo and Toxic Avenger were made into kid's cartoons. They've gotten much safer in recent years, directly basing cartoon series off of movies that were for kids to begin with. Of course, they have Jurassic World and The Fast and the Furious cartoons now, so it looks like they turned that corner.
Fitting that you call Felix from The Night Shift a hero because his actor was also a Power Ranger, specifically Blake the Navy Thunder Ranger in Power Rangers Ninja Storm.
In the tale of the dark music, fortunately, or should I say unfortunately, Andy never ended up feeding his sister to that thing. He just made sure she never bothered him again. I would’ve made her the food for that demon. That little brat deserved it
i always thought the the uncle died getting to the basement not that the demon got him being he was found and what we seen the demon doesn't leave behind evidence so likely that the uncle had a accident or one of the would be victims found out and took him out
No Tale of the Dream Girl? What an underrated episode. Scary, heart wrenching, genuinely emotional, so well done that M Night Shyamalan had to shamelessly rip it off. It's worth a watch and some more recognition

The other thing is a theory I've heard that Andy's mom knew about the demon, and she was trying to feed him to it; that's why she keeps sending him into the basement (you know the place where someone died and you probably shouldn't be sending your child?) and is generally dismissive about his worries

I know of a book that had a dollhouse which was a major part of the story. It's not a ghost or dark story like those in this series or is it?. The little girls were visiting a relative in a house that had a bad past (I think children's great-grandparents were killed in the said house?) and the girls found a replica of the house they're staying in in the attic. But every time they opened up the dollhouse the dolls moved around- I can't recall the ending but it was my first introduction to the old reels of newspaper clippings that one of the girls had to go through to find out about a killing.
Okay listen, this ranking is amazing. it was fun to watch, you gave really good summaries, and had some good episodes. but I couldn't help but groan in disappointment when I saw Laughing in the Dark at #1. I get it, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I can't seem to understand what is with the popularity of Laughing in the Dark. I've watched all of season 1, and it is one of the worst in that season. it's not scary, the acting sucks, the characters are so weird, the pacing is terrible, and I just don't get it. How do so many people regard this as the best episode, or at least one of the best? I'll never know.

Sadly, the only mention of Zeebo and Nickelodeon I remember is that dumb Barney parody they had on that one episode of iCarly although you got it admit seeing a guy dressed up as a knock off Barney named Zeebo getting hit in the face with a microphone for being frigging annoying it’s has a bit of hilarity and kind of reminds me of that one Barney bashing video where people just beat up Barney stuff. I’m sorry but whenever I hear the name Zebo, it’s just a funny thing I remember.

My only regret is that you didn’t put one of my favorite episodes tale of the silver sight I mean in the original two Runs the show this one stands out because for 1 in the revival if feels like a finale to the first run because the leader of the original series is back and he’s a part of the story and also this is the only one that actually focuses on the midnight society I think I might’ve even inspired the 2019 version to have the characters be involved in the story even though the demon boy is realistically freaky everything has a lot of scares the true horror is the consequences for using the silver sight is disturbing I mean we’ve all heard of the careful what you wish for stories heck I think this show even had a few of them but we rarely see it Happen right away we are told that Each one of the original members of the midnight society used it and what happened to all but one is kind of freaky The only surviving one use it for a lot of things but also to win the heart of a female member who had used it to gain popularity so he caused bad luck to happen to her boyfriend so she left her Boyfriend for him and then not long after she got into a car accident Another used it to become rich in the stock market and buy her 20s she was very wealthy Then years later she started making bad choices and lost it oh and when she died her son and his family had to hide in the sewers her son does plan to one day rebuild his family empire but even he doesn’t know how and lastly this is the most disturbing one one guy used to buy a theme park but when he realized that it was evil he hit it and then gave record pieces to the The other members so that if you never use again but if they ever need to destroy it they can find it later on after you hid it he died the next day and his brother who has taken over the park well he Text the kids to where he died now officially he fell off by accident but his brother believes that he knew the Ferris wheel where he died like a spider knows its web so he believes it was pushed so yeah I think it’s clear that the demon boy killed him now we see the demon boy a lot throughout the episode trying to scare the midnight society from Finding it and they believe that one of the original members is a traitor who use the The artifact for evil and you can’t really blame them for thinking that’s the sole survivor and the only one besides the main characters grandfather who is not only still alive but has apparently had nothing bad happened to him so yeah and then it doesn’t even get to when we actually see the demon boy after they find the charm one side effect is if you tell someone they’re your enemy the silver side destroys them and absorbs their soul that is messed up so yeah this is a pretty freaky episode and it should’ve at least gotten an honorable mention
