Iirc correctly he served as a minor antagonist in the beginning of the second book, tho the plot of that mainly focused on antagonistic dragons instead.
as a kid I knew that Mickey was supposed to be names Mortimer, so I was quiet amazed when I saw the first cartoon with Mortimer Mouse being that kind of bizzaro Mickey. Like I instantly realized the idea behind it and found it brilliant. Thats why I kinda have a soft spot for this character to this day. It's such a simple yet clever meta origin. He also became a reacuring character in the german disney comic books known as "Lustige Taschenbücher". SOmetimes as Mickey RIval and sometimes as a co criminal for Pete and co. Also in the same comics, the blot, also known as the phantom, kinda got a face reveal some years ago and is portrait like this now constantly, getting transformed into his phantom forms in some spin off stories. Like Mickey and friends being wizards in training in some kind fantasy world setting.
The Phantom Blot is one of my favorite Disney Villains, and I'm glad the European comics still make heavy use of him AND THE DUCKTALES REBOOT DID HIM SO DIRTY! Like, holy crap, if you wanted to make a Witch hunter Thanos, leave The Blot out of it
That's kinda the point. Disney doesn't like people meddling with their icons. That's why Della Duck inclusion in DT 17 was so important. Duck comicbook writers do whatever they want (there is even a Call of Cthulhu adaptation with HDL transfroming into nightmarish abominations) but they cannot use specific characters like Donald's parents.
Speaking of the Big Bad Wolf crossing over with the Brer characters. Interestingly in some versions of Brer Rabbit stories there is also a Brer Wolf in addition to his enemies Brer Bear and Brer Fox.
I remember that Ducktales episode. He actually was evil, sure, but he was just so overcompensating about it. I did like how he name checked actual other villains from other franchises without giving them those awful "parody" names. Something you rarely see in cartoons these days. As for Frank's portrayal, I get what he was going for. A more whispy, ghost like voice, but I think a slight variation on his Dr. Claw/Soundwave would have been perfect. I also seem to remember a really brief period in the 90's where they tried to make Blot a popular character, albeit through older Mickey comics. I can't remember if it was just a nostalgic aesthetic they were going for, and I can't remember if Disney Adventures had an article or two launching this. I do remember some sort of weird introduction of the character of some kind, there was a "Bend'ems" figure of the character, I managed to get one of those back then.
I love to see the Blot appear in a 2D animated film. He would make a great antagonist and get very popular. I am enjoying this retrospective series so far and I look forward to the next one
I used to love Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey comics as a kid, especially the one with Phantom Blot. I was also a "duck nerd" since Donald Duck comics are crazy popular in my country, and most of these characters bring back so many memories. Thank you for this interesting video series!
Maybe I don’t have a leg to stand on here, since this retrospective is the first I’ve ever heard of the Phantom Blot, but after seeing him as an antagonist in Season 3 of Ducktales, I found his use and characterization to be underwhelming. I don’t mind that they attempt to give him something of a backstory, or that they tie it to previously introduced characters like Magica, but his goals/values here vary drastically from how he seems to come across in the comics you displayed. It’s like taking Professor Moriarty from the Sherlock Holmes books and trying to give him the backstory and motivation of Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist.
I agree. I have generally loved the DuckTales reboot. Their reinterpretations of classic characters have been very interesting, and while they haven't hit the mark 100% of the time, they've usually been handled well. I don't care for this version of the Blot, and I feel that his role should have been played by a different character. I recommend checking out some of the old Mickey Mouse comics with him or his appearance in the House of Mouse I mentioned if you want to see the "true" Blot.
Yeah, when he started to talk about the Phantom Blot, I was really excited and thought they should bring him back. Only to realize that he was in the Ducktales Reboot and I completely forgot even though I watched the whole thing not that long ago. I kind of wished he was treated more like a bigger deal.
I'd like to add that Mortimer Mouse also had a quite good return in comicbook form, with some new quirks to his personality as well. I agree with you when you said that you may never know what obscure old character may hold for the future. Also, I know you have said that The Phantom Blot is very popular here in Europe with Disney comicbooks, howeven let me stress it even more, Disney comicbooks have a very large and popular market in both Europe and South America, with lots of characters and stories both new and old, and the way they handled the Phantom Blot through the years has been really masterful. For example, this past couple of years a new set of stories on him have been produced in Italy and, man, they truly show how good of a villain he can be.
Fun fact: mad doc was originally going to have his dark cloak from the short in the dark beauty castle scene of epic mickey, but do to the devs being worried people would confuse him for the phantom blot, it was scrapped.
I remember having a BBW and LBW comic as a kid, BBW had a friend with a vicious nasty tomboy daughter. They try to hook her up with LBW hoping she will rub off on him but instead he and the pigs rub off on her and she becomes a sweet girly girl type. Haven't seen that comic in over 20 years.
6:08: The general concept of an evil dad with a good hearted son like Little Bad Wolf, makes me wish Chris Thorndyke was a Robotnik Jr and not the spoiled kid of a rich family no one cares about. It would’ve made for good character background and interaction, and would give the whole “Chris shares Maria’s innocence” idea with Shadow more leverage than what SEGA initially went with in their botched retelling of the Sonic Adventure games.
Disney should really make a short or something with all these old cartoon villains coming together to try and one up each other in who's the most villainous.
Why tho? They have potential for much more than that. Like say... An epic feature-lenght film starring Mickey, interacting with characters from several films both animated and live-action in the style of Roger Rabbit, facing a group of classic but forgotten villains who want to destroy all the other toons in order to do... something, I don't know.
nemi reminds me of rariatoo's awesomely adorable characters noss & zakuro. :3 loved the phantom blot in house of mouse(wish he showed up in the paul rudish shorts outside a cameo.)/cool he runs into his awesome epic mickey version & am i the only one who thinks disney's version of waluigi with mortimor.(still remember him smack talking shere khan calling him tigger's evil cousin and stripey.)
I also like Peter and the Wolf a lot better when the Big Bad Wolf is treated well and fairly at the zoo as his just reward for spitting the Duck out of his digestive system.
Looking forward to your look at Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear! Also Shere Khan, Kaa, Willy the Giant, Pink Elephants, and Heffalumps and Woozles! Keep up the good work!
On the note of Epic Mickey, The Phantom Blot actually appeared in an early trailer for the game, though he was replaced by the Mad Doctor in the actual game
A bonus fact about the three little pigs: In the version on which the wolf eats the first two pigs, he tries to trick the third one into coming out of his house by inviting him to a turnip field, an apple tree and a fair. But the pig sees through the wolf's tricks and goes to those places before the hour set by them both. In the apple tree, he almost gets caught by the wolf, but manages to escape by making him fetch an apple for some reason. A similar thing happens in the fair, but in that ocassion the pig escapes by rolling inside a butter churn and scaring the wolf in the process. After the wolf learns about that trick, he finally decides to get down the chimney.
Butch also stole Pluto’s house in ”Pluto’s Housewarming”, and he used and groomed Pluto’s kid brother for a life of crime in ”Pluto’s Kid Brother”. I’d call that pretty evil.
There is the wolf from Peter and The Wolf. Which scared me as a child but I had an obsession with scary characters. The design haunted me for years but has stopped now after I had changed prescriptions and didn’t have night terrors anymore.
Here's an interesting extra bit of trivia: Back when Nintendo made the Game & Watch series, they had licence to put characters from other media in some of them, including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Popeye and Snoopy. One of the Game & Watch games, Egg, has a wolf who looks a lot like Zeke Wolf (minus the hat) as the player character, catching the eggs laid by the hens. This Game & Watch game simultaneously had a Mickey Mouse version which replaces the wolf with Mickey, the basic gameplay staying the same. Whether or not the wolf in Egg is Zeke Wolf himself is unclear, but given the Disney licence Nintendo had at the time, the wolf's resemblance to Zeke could well have been intentional.
Well this was a neat rundown of the villains so far 😁👍. I’m excited to see you tackle more of the villains that were introduced in the old Disney comics later on.
In the Disney Sport series both Big Bad Wolf and Mortimer are in them, I only had Soccer so don't know the others but Mortimer led a team called Imperials with Dobermans and Big Bad a team Wolfgang (reference to Wolfgang Reitherman) and had other wolves on his team.
Honestly, love Big Bad. It should be said how much that short made a difference in animation. Chuck Jones, the Looney Tunes director par excelance, cited it a lot for the personality animation on Fifer, Fiddler and Practical in particular.
The phantom blot defined my childhood. Over here in Europe he is truly well known. And as far as I see it in most stories he’s used in he is the biggest threat. Hell even when he isn’t the main antagonist like in the Premium Darkwing Comics he‘s still so story defining and relevant. He perfectly rounds out the trifecta. Pete is a thug, the Beagles are evil minions and he is the dramatic supervillain.
11:54 Is it just me, or does he look kinda like that weasel salesman from the adventures of Sonic the hedgehog cartoon? It's probably just the clothes.
Oooh I am a big fan of The Phantom Blot (as you might can tell...) and I have a large collection of the comics starring him (Mostly with mask on, because I unfortunately care less about those where he goes without mask). Here is some cool details I know about Phantom Blot: The number one is of course his motive revealed in comic "Do not forget my name/I Am Phantom Blot", where his ultimate objective is to make people fear him again as that's what he lives for in what he does. Unfortunately he has been lately mistreated like any other average criminal, so what he does is he plants a garden of flowers with the ability to erase memory for a period of time, and during this he does things to freeze people's blood once more. Second best one is actually a series called Darkenblot (you may have read about some of these), that is focused around futuristic cities of Robopolis and Japanese-influenced Robohama. In summary, Phantom Blot creates a namesake robot, that is a colossal battle armoury, which in its debut has ability to regenerate. Don't really know what actually was changed alongside the look in the later parts, but the third one is my all time favourite: He along with his technological crew, who I consider his friends since Phantom Brat, creates Umibozu called robot to terrorize the city with AI, who has become the artifical version of the phantom Blot. I gladly share some more from my collection if anyone is interested to hear more about these "European exclusive" blot stories

Nice of you for what you did, what was hoping you do, when it's a villain that came from the previous source material, you compare it to Disney's incarnation.
While the Big Bad Wolf is a villain, I kind of feel the first and second pig are at fault to some degree, since they constantly mock him with their song, and keep in mind, the wolf is determined to catch them, so essentially their giving him more reason to catch them.
I agree PLUS he COULD return in Mickey Mouse Funhouse in future episode since they did recently brought back Mortimer in the Roadster Racers and currently a 1 time appearance as HIMSELF instead of a persona since the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse's Super Hero special in Mickey Mouse Funhouse episode Maybe Im a Maze.
What's most fascinating about the Phantom Blot is that I could see him as a serious live-action villain. I can even see him as a true monster. I'm reminded of the "Batman" villain Killer Moth, who, thanks to an evil magic spell, went from being a pathetic loser in a moth costume to a gigantic man-eating actual moth named Charaxes! The Phantom Blot could undergo a transformation similar to that of the Killer Moth, becoming a being of pure black ink and looking more like the Spider-Man villain Venom. THAT I would pay to see!
I'd like both Charles Perrault's and the Brothers Grimm's version of Little Red Riding Hood a lot better with happy endings in which, the Big Bad Wolf is beheaded by a Woodcutter or drowns in the well due to his belly being full of heavy large stones.
Mortimer has also appeared in lots and lots of Mickey comics, mostly in the 70s and 80s, though he's been mixed up with Montmorency (who started appearing frequently in the 90s and 00s) to the point I think they're just considered two different interpretations of the same character at this point, despite having rather different designs, personalities and amounts of money.
@@junichiroyamashita Colin mentions Montmorency at 11:50, he's a character created for the Mickey Mouse newspaper strip by Floyd Gottfredson in 1941. Mortimer had appeared earlier in the strip in a storyline from 1936. Mortimer is a prankster with black ears and long pants with Mickey-style buttons on them, while Montmorency (aka Monty) is a rich braggart with brown ears (though American publications seem to color them with a very dark shade of brown to the point they seem nearly black) and fancy suits. The panel at 21:19 shows Monty, though the particular American publication this panel is taken from renames him Mortimer. I have no idea why they do this.
8:45 Can't recall it being aired on any of the Disney channels back in early 00's here in Sweden. Either that or I just compleatly missed out for other shows airing at the time.
Recently, the Big Bad Wolf made an appearance in the 2023 short "Once Upon a Studio", in which Disney celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Hey Colin, your right the wolf is eluded to in the song "who's afraid of the big bad wolf", but its the ominous foreshadowing Practical gives his two foolish brothers, when they laugh at him for working so hard. Though I know you said villains that are predators weren't really villainous since their trying to feed themselves, can we really say the wolf is a villain, since I stated in a earlier comment, he's being mocked by the two foolish brothers, who come off as bullies a bit?
The Phantom Blot on our last entry for this episode is quite an interesting villain. I’m not sure if he has what it takes to make the Disney chills roster of upcoming characters, but I think he has the potential races popularity as a villain as long as he puts in the effort and his fans continue to make more and animations of him. He’s a phantom in the form of a black Caped man. And with his daughter by his side, I think he has more potential. Here’s to the future of the phantom Blot!
Not exactly a fun fact: during the siege of the bunker during the final year of WW2 Hitler was reported to walk through the halls whistling "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf"
@@BigBWolf90 Hitler was massive nerd. He once said Snow White was the greatest movie ever made (he’s even said to have made fan art for it!). @Sir Henry Morgan he probably felt insulted unlike people today who think the anti Nazi cartoons are pro Nazi. Also Hitler made fan art of Snow White & the Seven Dwarves; well given what we know about his art, and the fact he was stealing it during WW2, it couldn't be that good
Maybe the three little wolves are Little Bad’s older brothers or cousins or something. And Big Bad Wolf likes them more than Little Bad. Cause they’re just as evil as he is, while Little Bad Wolf just wants to be friends with the three pigs. It’d be messed up, but I bet B.B Wolf would do something like that.
Actually, in a 60s Disney record based on the three little pigs and narrated by Sterling Holloway, Li'l Bad Wolf had two bad brothers that were expies of the three little wolves.
An extra detail about the Into the Woods version of the Big Bad Wolf is that the actor playing him also played Cinderella's Prince in the same play, furthering the idea of sexual predation given the Prince's unfaithfulness.

as a kid I knew that Mickey was supposed to be names Mortimer, so I was quiet amazed when I saw the first cartoon with Mortimer Mouse being that kind of bizzaro Mickey.
It's called "wizard of mickey". Also the blot is surpringly more often portrayed as the main vilain than Pete in those "spinoffs comics series"
The Phantom Blot is one of my favorite Disney Villains, and I'm glad the European comics still make heavy use of him
AND THE DUCKTALES REBOOT DID HIM SO DIRTY! Like, holy crap, if you wanted to make a Witch hunter Thanos, leave The Blot out of it
Ha cha cha! Pete is big, now he’s small
It’s a shame that there was never an adaptation of the Floyd gottfreson comics pike DuckTales because they really give Mickey more character.
Making Mickey an adventure hero? Why would Disney not allow that?
the floyd gottfredson comics are WAY too dark for modern disney
The closest things were some video games, but in animation, no dice to the point where Wish wasn’t about Mickey & co.
when you said madeline was mickey's cousion i got really scarred for a second
0:08 - Big Bad Wolf

14:29 - Butch the Bulldog
16:52 - Bent-tail the Coyote

It's decent that you upload these videos of the history of cartoons, animatronics, and even puppets. Keep it up
Speaking of the Big Bad Wolf crossing over with the Brer characters. Interestingly in some versions of Brer Rabbit stories there is also a Brer Wolf in addition to his enemies Brer Bear and Brer Fox.
Remember that brief time when Mortimer was a meme?
HA CHA CHA
Probably not confirmed anywhere, but the Phantom Blot's design seems to be derived from the disguise that the Mad Doctor wears when he kidnaps Pluto
0:08 The Big Bad Wolf

What did you think of their version of Taurus Bulba? Given the original performance by Tim Curry, it was already hard to get close to the original.
Yeah, when he started to talk about the Phantom Blot, I was really excited and thought they should bring him back. Only to realize that he was in the Ducktales Reboot and I completely forgot even though I watched the whole thing not that long ago. I kind of wished he was treated more like a bigger deal.
As a fan of the Nemi cartoon, her crush on the Phantom Blot is almost always the first thing I think about when it comes to him.
I just realized that Figaro and Pluto don't really interact much, despite them being Mickey and Minnie's pets.
Didnt they have Figaro help Pluto in House of Mouse ?
I remember one comic of big bad wolf where he being "good" by teaching a very mean rabbit a lesson by serving a huge portion of desserts
I went and found a video of the original _Coyote's Lament_ after watching this, and I'll admit it kinda pulled at the heartstrings a bit!
Big Bad Wolf also appeared in Cri Cri movie. A Mexican movie with animation from Disney, you can search the video as "CriCri Los 3 cerditos"
This series is really cool. I had no idea Mortimer Mouse existed, and I love seeing Blot and Mad Scientist explaining in detail
nemi reminds me of rariatoo's awesomely adorable characters noss & zakuro. :3
loved the phantom blot in house of mouse(wish he showed up in the paul rudish shorts outside a cameo.)/cool he runs into his awesome epic mickey version & am i the only one who thinks disney's version of waluigi with mortimor.(still remember him smack talking shere khan calling him tigger's evil cousin and stripey.)
The big bad wolf villan gave me some serious nostalgia
I also like Peter and the Wolf a lot better when the Big Bad Wolf is treated well and fairly at the zoo as his just reward for spitting the Duck out of his digestive system.
This channel is very underrated
Looking forward to your look at Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear! Also Shere Khan, Kaa, Willy the Giant, Pink Elephants, and Heffalumps and Woozles! Keep up the good work!
On the note of Epic Mickey, The Phantom Blot actually appeared in an early trailer for the game, though he was replaced by the Mad Doctor in the actual game
So many intresting comics, I have wanted to find a collection or guide to where to read the Phantom Blot´s stories.
I am happy how you always remember the comics.
Mortimer is hilarious. The perfect rival for Mickey.
Yup
Love the inclusion of epic mickey in these videos
Im excited about the next episode i hope you awso talk about the Queens Comic Aperances clearly you have a good comic Knowledge
I hope the time comes, maybe in a few years, when Lord Feldrake and Shelgoose from Legend of the Three Caballeros get their mention.
I love this history of Disney villans, thank you for going so in depth!
Fanfiction idea Crossover of Harry Potter meets the Disney Villains.
and it's up to both Mickey Mouse and Harry Potter to saved the day.
the Death Eaters join with the Disney Villains.
in Mickey and Harry's house of Villains
So if you're easy-going, medium-leveled, and hard-working, every house style is homely secure.
13:27
That says a lot considering some of the Disney villains have committed murder or have attempted to murder.
Nice of you for what you did, what was hoping you do, when it's a villain that came from the previous source material, you compare it to Disney's incarnation.
Hilarious how Mortimer retuned briefly earlier this year to the public conscious with that clip from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
Honestly would like to see a bunch of these guys get a resurgence!
23:31 (YMCA song plays in the background.)
nemi reminds me of rariatoo's awesomely adorable characters noss & zakuro. :3
While the Big Bad Wolf is a villain, I kind of feel the first and second pig are at fault to some degree, since they constantly mock him with their song, and keep in mind, the wolf is determined to catch them, so essentially their giving him more reason to catch them.
I wish these comics got to be on the screen so more people could see them.
Mortimer is also the name of Minnie's uncle in the comics and of Mickey's nephew, thought the latter is nicknamed Morty.
The Big Bad Wolf has appeared in an episode of The Wonderful World Of Mickey Mouse recently
I agree PLUS he COULD return in Mickey Mouse Funhouse in future episode since they did recently brought back Mortimer in the Roadster Racers and currently a 1 time appearance as HIMSELF instead of a persona since the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse's Super Hero special in Mickey Mouse Funhouse episode Maybe Im a Maze.
omg nemy used to be in the metro newspaper i loved her !
Walt Disney’s Big Bad Wolf is the prototype to the Looney Tunes’ Wile E Coyote!
They seem the same character to me
@@junichiroyamashita Colin mentions Montmorency at 11:50, he's a character created for the Mickey Mouse newspaper strip by Floyd Gottfredson in 1941.
This is the first time i've ever heard of Butch! These are very interesting!
...how am I just now realizing that "Three Little Wolves" is a loose adaptation of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"?
Another fantastic video. Looking forward to another part!
8:45
Can't recall it being aired on any of the Disney channels back in early 00's here in Sweden. Either that or I just compleatly missed out for other shows airing at the time.
Recently, the Big Bad Wolf made an appearance in the 2023 short "Once Upon a Studio", in which Disney celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Disney has given us wolves in The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, Zootopia, and other Disney franchises!
And now we have a modern Mickey Mouse cartoon with both Mortimer and the Big Bad Wolf. A possible comeback for both?
The line unless you're a pig made me laugh so much that I gave the video like.
19:06 Wait a sec, is the music used here “Nuclear Man Theme” by John Williams from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace?
The Phantom Blot's daughter's pointed head (as well as that of her doll) looks almost like a Ku Klux Klan hood.
I can’t believe they made a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy joke in that show.
Not exactly a fun fact: during the siege of the bunker during the final year of WW2 Hitler was reported to walk through the halls whistling "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf"
Well, it's no secret that Hitler loved Disney. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was one of his favorite movies, even.
@@Rubberman202 now that I didn't know
@@BigBWolf90 Hitler was massive nerd. He once said Snow White was the greatest movie ever made (he’s even said to have made fan art for it!). He once talked about how much he liked Snow White’s voice actress (Adriana Caselotti), something that absolutely horrified her. I wonder how Hitler felt once Disney started making anti-Nazi cartoons (like Der Fuehrer’s Face and Education for Death)…
@Sir Henry Morgan he probably felt insulted unlike people today who think the anti Nazi cartoons are pro Nazi. Also Hitler made fan art of Snow White & the Seven Dwarves; well given what we know about his art, and the fact he was stealing it during WW2, it couldn't be that good
@@sirhenrymorgan1187 He was also into King Kong
With Madeline I was worried for a second
