Philippines are more reasonable for retirement visas than Thailand. Not to mention, Filipinos also speak better English if that's your language. Many say it's so much more to live in Thailand as well. I'm sure many expats look at the requirements for Thailand visas and see that minimum income you need to prove is $1,875, compared to Philippines @ $800. That's a huge difference. I've also seen that cost of living in Thailand is 21% higher than the Philippines. I'm staying here in the Philippines 🇵🇭.

You bring up reasonable points. I have no argument. I would choose Thailand for other reasons: in my opinion Thailand has a richer culture, better food, a different history and heritage. Thailand was never colonized by Western powers, so it has a unique culture - a land of beautiful arts, architecture, performing arts, folklore, etc. Thailand is a richer country than the Philippines, it has a better infrastructure, better transportation system, some of the very best medical care and hospitals in the world. I think the Philippines is wonderful though, and the Filipino people are among the friendliest in the world.

Let's keep in mind his perspective is only on 2 locations, both tourist areas. If you watch expat vloggers living in other parts of thailand you'll get a much better idea of costs etc. Its even cheaper for similar lifestyle. Both countries have their benefits. For me the ideal would be a filipina GF and we live in TH or Malaysia as a base and then travel all through SEA 😁

Great interview! Currently in the exploration phase of finding a retirement city and watching this from Pattaya. I don’t love it like Claudio, this city feels very small. I like the transportation and infrastructure of Bangkok much better than Pattaya, but I love mega cities and many people don’t. I will be trying out Makati and Cebu over the winter, I’m hoping I like it more than Bangkok since the visa and language is a bigger plus for the Philippines.

You will get better service and higher quality of food and your meals will come to the table at the same time. The rentals are of higher quality and most include cable and very good WIFI they will be 40% cheaper. The only drawback is they drive on the wrong side of the road...

The lady I stayed with a northern Thailand had her house paid for she's a widow. The closest major city would be chaing Rai but it's about an hour and a half away. The town she's just outside of is Phayao. Not many foreigners there but according to her Pattaya and Phuket are way more expensive. Yes I know Bangkok is much more money but apparently Northern Thailand outside of any major city is even cheaper than that of course you don't have any foreigners either really

The draw of the PH is 1, the English prevalence, and 2, the age gap acceptance. Plus the PH is kinda like our little brother from a diff mother. TBS, after 10 or so trips to TL, all over on moto, and 5 years in the PH, there's no comparison. But I sure miss that little 1/3 my age Princess sometimes. Age gap relationships are common and accepted in Thailand. My Thai wife is 26 years younger than me. I know plenty of other age gap couples as well. The advantages of the Philippines are 1) English being widely spoken and 2) an easier and cheaper visa option. You can find Thais that speak English. There are 10’s of thousands of westerners married to Thai spouses that speak English.

Also the 800k. He later mentioned spending it (or repaying a friend) the next day. Immigration won’t renew your next visa extension if you pull your funds. Earlier he was right, 3 months prior & 2 months post your renewal date. Outside of those dates you can only drain it down to 400k minimum.

    • @martypoll

Yes but you you need to add that to use this method you have to show 12 months of deposits to a Thai bank. Typically you have to start with the 800,000 baht deposit the first year to give yourself time to build up a 12 month deposit record. Also, the advantage of the monthly deposit method is that you can spend the money to zero each month. There is no keeping a lump sum of 800,000 baht in the bank sitting there doing nothing.

I respect Claudio decision as i can see why Thailand is better in someway, but for me personally the Philippines is better overall. Even thou accommodation, medical and definitely food is better in thailand.
In the philippines is better in alot of ways, No that many dual falang prices, able to connect with the people because they speak English, the beaches and tourist spots are less tourist, its more of an adventure traveller, foreigners are looked as high regard and super stars, defiantly the women there are in another level when it comes to loyalty, family, and love. Thai retirement visa requires 800K Baht in a Thai bank -or pension income which is a pain now. You don't really need a visa agent for your second 1 yr extension of stay. He said it like it's a requirement but it isn't. There's a background check with that non immigrant O-A visa.
Married to a Thai non-immigrant O visa doesn't require one, no medical insurance, and 400K Baht in a Thai bank if in YOUR NAME only (800K if a joint account..TIT)

I agree with Claudio. Thailand does have an edge over The Philippines in the areas of infrastructure, accommodation affordability and food quality/service. Thailand also has a world-class healthcare system. It's probably better than Australia's healthcare system which is really saying something. The Philippines does have better beaches and beachy lifestyle, and the scuba diving is a lot better as well. I did a dive with Thresher Sharks off Malapascua Island off the northern tip of Cebu Island and it was incredible. You don't get those scuba experiences in Thailand. In The Philippines, there is little to no english language barrier whereas in Thailand it is rare to hear english spoken outside of the tourist areas.

An education visa is not a long term visa in Thailand though it depends on what you call long term. You can’t keep getting it indefinitely. You need to be enrolled in a legitimate school and you have to attend. After a few years you are at risk of not being able to get a new visa. Enrollment in a 4 year university for a real degree would also work.

Bangkok and Pattaya are very different. I love my visits to Pattaya. It sounds like he is living in the center of a red light district even though he doesn’t partake in the services. That is a personal choice. Nearby Jomtien is a more normal living environment. I spent my 60 years in the US living in suburbs so I found that living in central Bangkok to be a new and exciting experience. Bangkok in a a world class international city. It is a little more expensive and has much more variety of lifestyles than Pattaya has to offer. It is however a big city with all the characteristics, good & bad, of a big city. I’ve loved my 5 years here but my wife and I just built a house in the Isaan countryside and we will be moving there in a few months. The countryside is another different Thai experience.

Hi Gio I have to agree with your friend about choosing where to live in Thailand I too would choose only Pattaya or just outside within a 10-20 min car drive away. I would buy myself a modern European style luxury pool villa but offcourse you would have to have a Thai wife or Thai girlfriend as no foreigner can buy land in Thailand in your own name. A faring can buy a condo in his own name or rent for 30 year lease. The cities to buy in is Bangkok, Pattaya, Chang Mai, Phuket, these are the main places. I personally would only rent a condo long enough until I could find and buy a Resale Villa. A Resale is much better because the price can be way cheaper, you hopefully can get a mature landscaped garden with a Lanai, BBQ Area, your own totally private swimming pool. This is my dream to wake up in the morning to sunshine open the sliding doors and step down into your pool then enjoy breakfast together with your lovely beautiful partner. For me this is the life. Buy a car for exploring all over Thailand and buy 2 motorbikes for shorter local runs. The big drawback is outwith the main tourist cities not many Thais can speak any English. I totally agree the Thai food is excellent such a huge variety but if you live there you become street wise and you do your shopping at local markets for every day food and for clothes. The weather in Pattaya averages 33 dogs except in winter Dec and Jan then it goes down to around 22 dogs and feels cold to Thai people but not for faring. In Chiang Mai and further North in Chiang Rai in the mountains yes it can get cold at night even for foreigners. Now after living in Thailand and having 2 Thai girlfriends both could speak very good English my luck! I want to come and check out the Philippines in the Cebu area, Dumaguete, Valencia, Dawain? and I would take your advice Gio and choose a base and travel first! to different islands before I decide where to settle down and decide to retire permanently in the Philippines my main reason would be Filipinas can speak English a huge plus. If you are living constantly with only your girlfriend who speaks English and your neighbours can only speak Thai then after a while you will know you can start craving to find s fellow faring who can speak English otherwise you can start to feel a little linely/isolated. I am sure you will know what I am meaning Gio. I have enjoyed listening to your vlog with your friend from Pattaya. Take care and say hi to Maya & daughter.

Gio - People considering moving to Thailand need to investigate the visa options. It is a huge source of confusion. Cost of living can range from $1200 to $3,000+ USD per month depending on where you live and how much you want to party - basic is average 1800. Definitely less expensive in Ph for comparable lifestyle. Note - more visitors are returning to Thailand and prices for rent, food etc is definitely going up. Covid discounts are long gone and the Thai people are much more money driven than Filipinos. Great final question... completely agree with his answer.

Regarding the 800,000 baht to meet the 1 year extension requirements. Officially you must have the 800,000 baht in your bank account for 2 months before you apply for the extension and 3 months after. For the remaining 7 months the balance cannot fall below 400,000 baht. But of course you need to replenish the amount again to 800,000 the 2 months before your next extension so you really have only 5 months at 400,000. I leave 800,000 in my bank all the time. It is just easier that way. I go to Bangkok immigration myself to extend my visa for 1,900 baht ($53). Among the documents, I bring a 1 year bank statement to show that I maintained the proper bank balance all year long. I got my 5th 1 year extension 2 weeks ago. If you use an agent apparently you can skip meeting the official extension requirements for a price. Be careful what agent you choose. You can also meet the financial requirements by getting an income verification affidavit from your home country embassy but this is not available to US, UK, and Australian citizens.

Hi Gio. Greetings from the wonderful city of Chiang Mai in beautiful northern Thailand. I am amazed that you thought - even for one second - that "more foreigners go to the Philippines than to Thailand." Weirdly, many foreigners living in the Philippines seem to share this illusion. As a tourist destination the Philippines is a disaster story. Some recent statistics I saw showed that in the whole of south east Asia there is only one country which has FEWER tourists than the Philippines and this is the tiny landlocked country of Laos. I believe that the Philippines should be a huge tourist destination because of its 7,000 + islands and the fact that English is widely spoken. But I think the terrible infrastructure including hotels, awful internet and, in particular, the truly atrocious food are major reasons why very very few foreigners visit the Philippines or want to return. There is a good reason why there are millions of Thai restaurants around the world but no Filipino food restaurants (the only exceptions are a handful catering for OFW Filipinos working as nurses, domestics etc.)

From my experience living in both countries for a long time, I'm 59 with a 23 years old Filipina living with me right now.,., But In Thailand, it would cost me a lot more to keep a young Thai girlfriend. Thai people on average earn almost double than average Filipinos as per GDP, so Thais have a higher income/spending habits, Thailand is a net exporter as a whole compare to Philippines who are net importer more than they produce, so inflation is lower and things are cheaper overall by comparison.

    Where to stay????
When I first retired, I spent 6 months in the Philippines (Angeles, Manila, Olongapo, Tacloban) and 6 months in Thailand (Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket).
Overall Thailand is GREAT - I liked it there so much that I was looking at buying a Condo in Pattaya.
Food - I like German food (Angeles City/Pattaya/Phuket have excellent German restaurants), American food (Pattaya had an excellant Sizzler Steakhouse and all cities have lots of American fast food and chain restaurants), and Mexican food (Angeles City/Pattaya both have great Tequila Reef Mexican restaurants). Sea Food - Pattaya was the best. Asian food (Thai-Korean-Japanese) is not my thing. Chinese food - I really only like Americanized and Germanized Chinese food. Pizza is everywhere. Overall I would say Pattaya was the clear winner here.
Walking Streets - Again Thailand wins out. Angeles is fun too, but come in at a very distant 2nd place.
Ladies - I prefer someone I can communicate with. The Philippines wins this hands down.
Bottom Line - Thailand is much, much nicer - but you have to Bring Your Own Filipina.
