You are so pretty, I enjoyed this video because I am looking for vintage clothing but I find mostly cheap goods that are called vintage. I have a question that may seem personal but I am curious as to why you have a blind eye? My son is currently dealing with Acanthamoeba Keratitis and it is contacts that put him at risk, he now is blind in his left eye but it isn't obvious. I didn't realize how much he is challenged with only one eye, he is just recently voicing this and he is having to adjust.

Also was just thinking a good option for some, like me with my very non traditional body shape (scoliosis and small shoulders, plus permanent steroid belly, aka I look about 6mo pregnant) getting the less expensive dress and having it altered by a good seamstress would be less expensive and fit better than the nicer stuff. And a decent slip can do wonders for dealing with poor stitching and rough material! Almost everything hurts my skin, but put a high quality slip of silk or rayon on first and I can wear almost anything, including a corset for my back pain! I'm learning how to diy stuff without sewing for fun, with fabric glue etc, but I still take my clothes to a pro. Let a home sewer do a few dresses and she took the top in wrong so now the front is too small and the back hangs down so far it shows my bra line! Never again.
For anyone who has bought vintage with pit stains: if it's not dry clean only, make a paste of bicarb soda and water and brush it in with an old toothbrush, then leave it to sit overnight before washing out (by hand or in the machine). If youre worried about scuffing the fabric, or its very sheer or a thick knit, dissolve a few tablespoons of bicarb in water and soak your item overnight before washing

Personally, for me, fast fashion is "wrong" when you go to Walmart every week, buy a bunch of cheap stuff, then wearing it once and throwing it out. I buy cheap stuff because I've been broke most my life, but I wear stuff until it wears out or it stops fitting. I have clothes from Walmart that I've been wearing an embarassingly long time because they still fit and look decent.
I am working on going through my clothes to pick things out that I don't like anymore.
I'm in college so naturally, it's very hard for me to get rid of anything. I have clothes from high school that I still wear (I'm a college senior. Granted I haven't really grown).
ThespiansCreed Yup, I have stuff from high school and even a few from junior high! 😬 I've grown, but I used to like stuff loose so it still mostly fits. (I'm 27, so junior high was 14 years ago now...)
Aaaah! Me too! :) If chosen carefully and taken care of, "fast fashion" can still be a lasting option on a budget.
I always go for basics when they're on sale and use them until they rip apart. But since my wardrobe a matches, people think I have a *huge* wardrobe with a lot of stuff 😎
all of my clothes are "fast fashion" and they hold up well and I wear the same things all the time. I don't own any clothing or make up items over 30$. edit: I'm only 13 (almost 14) so I have anything older than 2 years
I've seen fast fashion start to fall apart on the first wearing.
A seamstress can cut off that bad blue fake sweetheart top portion and turn the bottom half of the dress into a skirt.
I don't wear vintage dresses but I love your videos. Watch every one. Your speaking voice is so soothing for me. Also, love the overall openness on this channel. ❤️

Oh, the knockoff candy stripe dress broke my heart! I can see why it looks similar at a glance, but to a sewist the first thing we see is how the stripes fall, and it instantly says the real dress (which is probably lined) has princess seams in the bodice, and eight gores in the skirt, while the knockoff is just a flat tank top and plain circle skirt with no gores. That will massively affect how the dress shapes to a body, how it drapes, etc. What a shame! I hope you get a good sewing friend to make you a better, more accurate knockoff. It really shouldn't be too hard to sew, and you deserve a much better fit than that tragedy you got.
I have four Grace Karin dresses and I love them. They fit me very nicely and their colors are very bright.

I'm a seamstress and will say that a talented one will be able to do a flat sweetheart neckline. You don't have to have it rouched to fit nicely and be a sharp sweetheart shape you just have to not be lazy 🤣. I appreciate what you say about buying from a local seamstress 💖
me as a man who doesn't wear dresses and has no interest in it, diving into your haul/review videos because is just lovely how thoroughly you review everything, unbiased, also came her originally from diassociaDID [mental illness] so I have no idea how I keep finding these things but I love them lots
Im all about less is more. I love a capsule wardrobe. I buy more expensive brands, but have less. I believe in good quality fabrics too as they last longer. I would hate to admit how old some of my clothes are!!!
I feel fast fashion is not worth it as they don't last at all and never wash up well. I also worry about slave labour. Primark worries me a bit!!!!

Wheelsnoheels - Gem Hubbard I believe in less is more as well. I think they key here is to invest in quality vintage stuff that you can mix with other clothing. For example, I have a vintage Dior jacket on hand. Since Tops are the most noticeable part of your OOTD, I can pair it with some chinos from Uniqlo or any other brands. I have quality vintage clothing and the same time, I saved money.
I have some clothes from when I was 14 and 15 aha. We've all been there Gem 😂

I lucked out in the vintage department. My grandmother gave me her dresses from the 40's-60's. All very good quality. Some she made, some her employer gave her. Her employer bought a new wardrobe from Chicao and Mew York every year. She and my grandmother were the same size. She gave my grandmother the clothes from the previous season. My grandmother took excellent care of them. Luckily, my grandma was my height and my weight. So I inherited a few dresses, hats, gloves, and petticoats. So, yay. I don't do vintage often at the moment. I do still love it. Love this video. My favorite is a lightweight wool, navy as nd cream mini-houndstooth check dress. It has a round neck, 3/4 length sleeves, and a pleated skirt. It is fully lined, which is great because wool itches me to no end. It has a cream collar and sleeve cuffs that can be attached for a more prim look. Anyway, I love this video, and all of your videos, actually. Great stuff. 💜💜💜
Good advice. I love vintage, and buy some on Etsy. I am only 5'1'' and a size 10 - 12. My height can be a problem .I am in a wheelchair due to two neurological illnesses. As I'm middle aged now, I don't
like short dresses as they ride up when seated in the wheelchair.The shirt is really fresh looking and a versatile item.
Kat Lover I've noticed that a lot of the cheaper 50s dresses are too short. I've been tempted to buy two, and use one to extend the skirt of the other one. This still works out cheaper than buying the fabric and making the dress from scratch. Note, my wife is 5' 10" so the dresses are way to short on her.
I've only watched your intro so far, but all the plus points you list are EXACTLY why I love my fairtrade/hippy clothing, even though the colour fades a lot and it all mostly has to be hand washed I love how much of it supports small industries and makers ❤

I love finding new sources for vintage style clothing- especially when they are "reasonably" priced! I have noticed though that it's a lot easier to find these clothing gems when you are *not* a plus size gal. I am consistently finding manufacturers who claim they have a plus size line when in fact their sizing only goes up to Uk18/US14. Meh. It just means I get to keep shopping, I mean researching!

I'm new to dressing vintage partly inspired by you, I've posted a couple of videos on my channel but building a collection in this style can be expensive! This video is so handy and I will be saving the good places you bought for future buying. I agree with you too that vintage dressing means that we do not have to worry about fashions and can wear things for longer and get our money's worth. Also I've been buying from everything five pounds since you posted about them! Edited to say, I know a lot of people who dress vintage wear vintage style underwear, but I'm disabled like you and have a lot of chest pain and skin pain could you please talk about whether vintage style underwear is needed and how comfortable it is please?

Growing up in my home country my grandparents would always take me charity shopping. In Eastern Europe most clothes (even the ones sold as new) tended to be pretty poor quality, but in charity shops we'd find German and British clothes (vintage mostly) in pristine condition and of stupidly good quality (my nan's sister was a tailor and she was very impressed with the quality). I am lucky that when I arrived in the UK to go to uni I found so many charity shops around my area, and some of them are exclusively vintage :D. I got the long wool coat I always wanted for 15 quid, and it looked like it was never worn (found the brand on etsy for over £90!). Vintage tapestry bags in pristine condition for 3 quid. A fur shawl like I've never seen before for a tenner. My small room is filled with vintage clothes and I have no idea how I'm going to carry everything with me when I'll have to move out, but I am not giving up on any of them. I am a very sharp hourglass and vintage just suits me perfectly; I can't wear anything modern, not necessarily because I don't like it, but because it does not fit me. I can't even wear most branded retro adaptations because the waist still tends to be too high or too low even then, and I'd be stuck between unflattering and uncomfortable :(. The only disadvantage you get from wearing vintage often is the odd looks you get on the streets
As someone who buys vintage-inspired dresses from AliExpress recently, including Sisjuly, I can say that it's a hit and a miss. I love all of my dresses, but there are plenty of thicker fabric with a great shape while there are those thin fabric with not so great shape like that dress you showed (which was on my wishlist for a while now but I chose different flamingo dresses)
I even own a dress that looks just like your lemon dress but with a heartshape cut.

I have a lovely charity shop in my town, that has a whole vintage floor... Sewing patterns, gloves, records, suitcases, fascinators, all of it really, and I love it.
Making ethical choices is a luxury afforded to the rich, and hoisting that responsibility onto consumers who can't afford to make that change ensures that the market doesn't have to respond to things ethically unless their hands are forced. Which is great for them, because they can just keep practicing status quo. It makes me so upset when people guilt others for not being able to afford "ethically sourced" options! :(

Have you ever gone to get your ill-fitting but cute dresses tailored? I do alterations as my job and I love telling people how to liberate their closets. 😃
I see your comment as a good opportunity to ask these questions.
1. If someone wants something to be added (lace, ribbon, a button, a zipper, etc) to a piece of clothing, would alterations be a good place for that or no?
2. Would alterations also be a good place to swap out something? (Change buttons to zipper)
3. Would it also be a place where one would go to remove something such as taking out what one deems as too much lace?
I tried using search engines to find an answer but I got nothing. Thank you for reading!
@@0lala020 I'm not a professional tailor, but I do sew a bit at home and I can assure you that adding or removing trims like lace, ruffles, etc. should be no problem. Depending whether it requires unpicking a seam it may cost a bit more or less, but is almost always do-able. Changing buttons to a zipper may or may not be simple, you'd want to judge case-by-case.
In sewing, almost anything CAN be done, it's always a question of whether there's enough fabric to handle being folded into a new seam allowance, or whether you're okay with adding a bit of a different fabric to fill in where needed (sometimes that actually becomes a cool design feature).
And of course don't forget using your tailor friend to improve simple fixes like loose buttons, or unattractive buttons you'd like swapped out, or shortening a hem, or nipping in a waistline etc. Properly tailored clothes are a joy!

I’ve really found that Warehouse is amazing for vintage type clothes, it’s beautifully made and British! I have so many things from there ❤️
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am so broke (being a Child), and I don't live super close to any awesome consignment shops for the pinup-y era (though our local charity shops have some dope 80s stuff). I go into Cambridge (the one near Boston, not in the U.K.) when I can, because there's this awesome store called The Garment District that has a contemporary room and then, in the back, a vintage room. Everything is dated with at the very least a decade, and there are rows of very specific and awesome stuff - a rainbow of leather jackets with the rack of broken in black and brown ones, two full racks of 80s-90s overalls, and a whole corner of vintage prom dresses. The older (40s through early 60s) clothes tend to be more expensive or totally destroyed, so their pinup type stuff isn't really feasible, though sometimes you can find some amazing stuff for cheap (especially jackets, but I've gotten some great overalls and one Wednesday Addams-ish white and lace dress with minimal staining for about $10). Still, I very much am the hourglass shaped lady, so finding vintage-inspired dresses and skirts irl that are small enough for my waist but also don't become indecently pulled up by my curves. This comment is crazy long. Oops.

I turned fourteen last week, for xmas I received a red polka dot swing dress. On my birthday I purchased a 3 item mystery bag from the same brand (Dolly and Dotty) for about £12 when they are normally about £40. I got a blue polka dot swing dress, polka dot rose dress and a v-neck maxi beach dress. I rag roll my hair, am doing a 50s newspaper project in English, bake Hot Milk Cake and am doing a 50s health and lifestyle week and much more.
I have that lemon dress and the flower dress she showed. I have I think 3 more of their dresses. I LOVE them. They are amazing.
I love wearing vintage and always get so many compliments when I wear that type of clothing, but struggle finding affordable shops where I can trust what I'm buying, so to discover these review videos feels like hitting jackpot; especially with Grace Karin which is definitely in my price range and free shipping on Amazon - I'm definitely going to indulge in some new outfits

That lemon dress was my wedding reception dress! However I got it at a thrift store.
When I studied abroad in London I bought a beautiful vintage dress. It was my favorite article of clothing and only cost 20 pounds because it was on a sale rack at a vintage show. Since then I've gained about 50 pounds (I think because of medications) and it no longer fits, but I just can't bear to let it go. Thank you for this video, because now I may be able to afford some things that remind me of my lovely dress and fit my new size!

With a few alterations, I think you could make the Sisjuly dress work! Just take the waist in a little and add a couple small gathers to the sweetheart neckline. Small things can make a big difference for the fit.

I get tempted to buy dresses from places like Vivian Holloway, but I decided about a year ago that I am not going to buy any new clothes. Ever. I have a video on the reasons why if you’re curious. I’m going to get everything second hand or make it myself. That includes bras, underwear, and socks. It’s even cheaper to buy stuff from the thrift store and get fabric from the thrift store to make myself.

I think if I had a bit more money I think I would buy more actually vintage clothes and definitely British brands, I did buy from Tiger Millie which is where I got a sold out Lindy Bop dress! My Central Park winter scene! I've kind of stuck with Lindy Bop so far-only had an issue with one dress but as you say it could be more my shape and I'm losing weight so that could affect it! I found randomly some black t strap heels, and ankle strap heels from Matalan both vintage style but bit uncomfortable at the mo- buying party feet insoles!

Hi lovely! I really enjoyed the video, thank you. And, as I already said on Instagram, I think Fast Fashion is something that should be addressed. So, I agree with you. If you don't have a lot of money to spend, you can't be expected to buy expensive, high sustainable fashion. I just think that everybody should be sustainable in the way they can and try help the environment and peoples of this earth with what they can afford to do. This might not only be about fashion, but also about buying fair-trade products here and there or trying to eat less meat, or whatever suits you best. As long as you live consciously, you're doing a good job!
Grace Karin is one of my FAVORITE brands! I also love Belle Poque but I agree... their cut isn't as perfect for more of an hourglass figure than Belle Poque.

I bought a Belle Pogue gothic gown and it's gorgeous so I'm getting a few of their vintage style pieces ordered and I'll be wearing my first dress tomorrow... the key to buying on Amazon is REALLY REALLY looking at the customer posted images. There's usually someone with my measurements who's giving a review and posting a photo. I've never had to send anything back... but I may spend an hour researching and comparing. I'm a 34DD so it's hard to find tops and dresses that fit properly
The best thing about vintage is that your new dress will not go out of fashion next year. You can spend more on each item, as it will last for years.

Have you done a hair tutorial? I am the worst at victory rolls and my hair refuses to curl with heat. (I mean I’ve let hot curlers set in my hair for 2+ hours and it fell out immediately.)
but all of the dresses on Belle Poque are sleeveless. Do you wear them in winter? if so then how do you make them warmer? confused.
Oh also in the 'moral aspect,' session, another thing to consider is whether your fast fashion clothes are absolutely jam packed with toxic levels of lead, as found in Shein clothing. The Shein moral aspect is probably the harshest/worst, because not only are the workers horrendously overworked, they're also punished pretty badly for mistakes (their day's wages may be revoked) and the spaces they work in sometimes don't have fire exits. Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire anyone?
You seem to know a lot about vintage fashion, do you think you could make a video eventually about maybe the best different vitage styles for different body types. Because I would love to get into vintage fashion but my body shape is very very different than what the styles were originally made for, in fact, I have a hard time with fashion nowadays and finding styles that look good on me. I'm 5'1 and thicker than average but I'm very hourglass and always have been. I just think it would be interesting to get opinions from you on just different styles of vintage clothing for different body types.

I love vintage clothing in 1940-1960's which I make myself. I made my first Vintage 1941 blouse out of crepe back satin, Vintage dress 1943 out of knit rayon of spring colorful flowers which everyone was a surprise of me being able to sew due to me starting sewing in last week of November 2017. Now, I am sewing a sheer paisley with different colors silk voile 1940's blouse., I will be adding Soutache trim at the neckline and sleeves. I also love British fabric which I have two monthly subscriptions of receiving fabric to make a garment, quarter pieces, thread, buttons and a surprise. I would like to visit England just to visit the fabric shops all day long and having a proper afternoon tea everyday.

I live in Cumbria, UK and I'm a big girl. I struggle finding dresses that suit my body type and are cheapish. I have only 4 dresses, 2 light, 2 darkish - depends on my mood. ( I have my petticoats too)
Just so just wondering if you have any advice or know any were I can go for my dresses or a skirt as I love retro and vintage soooo much and would love to wear them more often

I know it's not an issue for you, but does anyone know of a good source of maternity vintage clothes? I'm so sad getting too fat for my favorite clothes, but all I can find for vintage maternity is clothing patterns. I know for a fact women got pregnant in the 40s and 50s.
Sharyn T I am only three months right now, but I have been picking through my closet and seeing what I already have that will work. Some of the vintage dresses I already have are made of stretchy material and I am hoping to get by at least until month six or so with those. I have too been searching and have had some luck on Etsy. Sometimes classic cuts and styles can be found in modern maternity stores as well, like Pinkblush. Let me know if you find any additional places!
Check out the good on you app! Clothes are made in all kinds of countries and personally I think the most important thing is that whoever is making the clothes is being treated/paid fairly and this app helps you check on that ad well as other aspects.
Have you ever been to Goodwood Revival? I was working there today and the commitment to their gorgeous vintage theme was so cool, so many of the women reminded me of you 😂 honestly I kinda felt like I had accidentally timetraveled all day haha

Cause they have pretty 20's and 50's dresses not that expensive, but I'm not sure about the quality of the dresses? I've seen bad comments on their instagram saying they're using false photos from other people and their dresses are different in reality, so I'm not sure....

Another really good quality brand for vintage-style clothing is Hellbunny. Also, Collectif Vintage London. I can’t confirm the price (or availability) in the UK for Hellbunny but the dresses I do own are FANTASTIC quality

I’m not meant to wear heels (EDS and ankle instability) and technically I’m meant to always wear a lace up boot. Can you recommend a style of flat shoe or boot that would work with your gorgeous vintage style?
I shop at Wal-Mart but not for fast fashion. It better last! But I have been wearing a true vintage dress.
