The easiest way to remove the boot is a battery operated angle grinder with a cut off blade. As far as returning it, any gutter will do.

Well, not sure about the boot, but the windshield barnacle is taken off by drilling into the suction cup. Ezpz. I still have a dozen of them in my garage. We were driving from BC to TX and got this shit placed on our windshield up in Seattle on a restaurant parking lot. Every single car got booted like this on the lot, including some really expensive ones like a Gallardo and a Bentley bentayga that just came out back then. I was an odd one there with my lifted F 350.
As I understood from conversation - restaurant had a land dispute over it's parking lot and a pond. And the owner of the land decided to go after the restaurant's clients instead of the restaurant itself.
You ain't messing with a Texan in a pickup truck on apportioned plates. I have a 5th wheel in that sucker, you think I won't have a drill? In 20 minutes I removed them from every single car with much aplauze of the owners, grabbed all 13 of those boots, and continued on with my journey. I might have given a wrong phone number to the restaurant management, and the apportioned plate is only good for a year, but nonetheless two years have passed, and I still have 13 barnacles from Seattle in my possession.

According to the video, they put a boot if you have more than 5 outstanding violations.
If you don’t return the boot, you get a big fine and maybe some prison too. It could even be a felony.

    • @mikechilders
      @mikechilders 5 років тому

Cities like the boot for two reasons.
1, there is no cost associated with actually towing and storing the car. No contracts with tow companies and an SUV can carry 30 boots and just roam from one lot to another.
2, Leaving the car on the lot is a hassle, so they only do it after 5 tickets. After 5, your vehicle is stranded unprotected where it sits. People will pay rather than leave it for even a little while. A booted vehicle would be a perfect target for thieves to steal stuff from the car. It is meant to be a big agravation.
But if you are booted by a parking lot or company who is not police or a licensed towing service, you can cut it off legally in most cities. Posted signs don't give them the right to boot you.
This behavior is going to create rage and someone will eventually get hurt or killed.

Brian Skene that’s very risky, because the credit card company most likely will reach out to where the money was sent and ask questions which will lead back to your car and eventually to you. Another way around this is buying a prepaid visa or MasterCard gift card and paying with a debit card (usually the stores won’t allow you to pay with any credit card) then telling your bank you didn’t buy the gift card. Of course you have to be smart about this, go to a store you’ve never shopped at before and wear a believable disguise. Also if it asks for your signature make sure it doesn’t look like you signed it...make it look out of character. This is illegal what I just suggested, so don’t try it unless you are comfortable with the possibly of getting caught.

It sure depends on the tire size. At about 0:30 on the Jeep tire, only one nut is really covered. And looking at the holding pin position at 1:07, I'm sure one could pivot the boot away from the covered nut, especially after letting the air out of the tire. On smaller tires, one might not be that lucky.

They are required to break after only a few feet if you drive away. This is to prevent a person who fails to notice it from crashing. If you can stomach minor damage to your bodywork, this is a no brainer. Because of the design requirements, the boots are also easy to simply break off. The handle of a car jack is quite capable of breaking the inside joint, making it easy to remove. And remember, the courts have ruled that whoever booted your car GAVE it to you. You can keep it, its yours. This is why they went to the limpet, which goes on a wind shield. It is also easy to defeat with a pocket knife.

I'd agree with you, but over here in Europe where space is at a premium, old inner cities aren't made to accomodate cars. There is something to be said for the simple fact that 1 parking space worth of space can accomodate a single car, 5 scooters/motorbikes, or 10 bicycles.
So here the idea is that there is good public transportation, and there are central parking hubs and transferiums at the edge of the city. Park your car there, get a bus pass to and from the inner city, valid for 24 hours, for 1.50. Or try your luck at parking in the city centre where it's 2,80 an hour, and the city watch enforces parking in ways that not even Orwell could dream of.
There is a point where the only thing a city can do to control the problem is put punitive measures in place. I commute on a scooter, because it's faster, and I no longer have to pay 240 euro a month for a parking permit, just so I can park at work.
I hardly use my car in the city anymore, it took a bit of an investment up front to buy a scooter, but it's saving me so much on petrol and parking, I've got more cash to spare now, than I did before.
But yeah, I can see how none of that applies to the vast majority of US cities and suburbs.

The code would have to be manually changed based off the technology used, and the local town/city/county tow office would not likely want to mess with the codes as there is a possibility that the wrong code be entered into the payment center's unlock code section and could lead to a lawsuit. The employees are usually too lazy to go through with a process to change the codes of all the used boots after very use, or a few uses, since it would involve contacting the payment processor's IT guy, the lock's company coder, as well as get town/county/city hall's approval before editing anything with the devices to cover them from lawsuits for faulty equipment, wrong codes for payment, and tows that happen due to the inability to remove the device after payment has been made.
