- The Foo Fighters and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl wrote his new book, The Storyteller, during the pandemic, when his band were unable to tour, and after he began posting short stories from his career on Instagram.
In this chat with Fearne, Dave Grohl talks about the law of attraction, the pursuit of his dreams and the magic of venturing into the unknown and discovering what happens next. Something that has been lost a little over the years with the new generations, since the pressure on young people to archive perfection is overwhelming, leading to the mistakes they make dictating their future from a very early age when it is mistakes that make us grow as human beings.
From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old to his time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters to flying halfway around the world with his daughters... the list goes on. Find out how Dave Grohl started his passion for writing stories as a kid from Springfield, Virginia, thanks to both parents, and how it evolved as his career progressed and Dave met the incredible people who shaped his life.
Are storytellers underrated? More of Dave's Stories from his energetic life can be found in his new book, The Storyteller, out 5th October.

This was an incredible interview. Thank you!
I love your blouse, who's the designer please?
Great interview Fearne… You need a TV, music chatshow…
Thanks for this interview! Every interview and new thing I hear about Dave Grohl the more I adore him. I love his go for it attitude and belief in himself. At the same time he's so kind, warm, and real. There's no arrogance, only confidence. I think many people confuse the two. His book is on my library hold list. It's mine in about 8 weeks. Ugh, the wait may do me in!
Dave Grohl is the nicest rock star ever. If you haven't read and watched From the Cradle to the Stage written and based on his mom's book you're missing out! It is fantastic!
The part where he said they play every show like it’s their last definitely made me tear up a bit.
Dave instilled this in me years ago and it has effected every busking show I've done since. This is maybe the last time these people are going to see me, so...
A todos nos hizo llorar.
That’s just a line, it’d be impossible emotionally to do that night after night… not to mention impossible to trick yourself into thinking that.
It just means they play with there heart every night and they mean it. I get why you geared up tho thinking about Taylor
Me too😢
Dave is one put together dude. Man, as much as I love his music, I think I love his approach to life even more.
Just converted me as that lifestyle too. 🥇👌
I love Kurt Cobains approach to life more
Yes,undoubtedly! He’s always been like that kind of a guy you can listen to and hang out with, incredible dude🔥🤟🏻
Same. He makes life seem worth investing in. I'm 38.... And honestly have this real love/hate thing with getting older.
One part of me genuinely kinda hates it. Mostly, if not entirely, because death...becomes more likely with every passing year.
But....at the same time, if I HAD to just be 21 again...idk, maybe. But honestly, probably not. Depends on the perks, like retained memory, etc. But....Dave at least makes it seem a tad less existentially dreadful. It's his still intact youthfulness that seems key. The guy isn't young...but he is very young at heart.
I can't believe I said that. I _despise_ that phrase....young at heart. It reminds me of some cliché inspirational office poster. It's saccharine and annoying. But....sometimes the most obvious things are kinda true. :p
I've never been fully a foo fan but I so relate to how @davegrohl shares his music and self with all of us
FINALLY! A great interview that didnt bring up a million Nirvana or Kurt questions! I'm glad she spent time just talking to him about his life and experiences instead of asking the normal.. "what was kurt like?"
What WAS Kurt like? 🤔
Glad you said, I thought exactly the same. Was really refreshing to get a different narrative for a change.
Yeah, but, what WAS Kurt like? Just kidding!😁😂🤣😉
@@ppcasm_1278Kurt who? 🤷🤐👍
Does she even know who Kurt is...?🤔
I love Dave's enthusiasm and sincerity. If I could hang out for a day with one rock star it would be him.
Me too.
Yes it would be fascinating to see the 'other side' once the cameras stop rolling - is he seriously like this in real life or does he just crash into a deep depression immediately after because of all the energy expended in his fake personality?
@Boois Hoois A rarity - someone else who sees through his unbearable fasade. We must stand together
Axl rose.a true legend
@@booishoois309 I really get the feeling that he’s just the same when the cameras stop rolling .
Dave's interviews are always a treat. He's amazingly inspiring and there's so much bravery in his idea about being attracted to things that don't have a safety net. Great conversation!
It's like how my adoptive mother is attracted to watching other people have medical procedures without their consent. So brave! So brave!
Touché, this strong charismatic video 🥇🥇
every interview's like he's never been interviewed before. amazing.
I'm not really a Foo Fighters fan and I don't know who this interviewer is, but this was a great interview! She asked great questions, kept things moving, seemed interested in Dave's answers. I'll have to check out more of her stuff. I am a Nirvana fan and Dave is always great with interviews.
I bloody love him, he is such a brilliant cool person and one of the nicest people ever.
Dave is very open to life, loves people and manages to keep a healthy perspective on life. It's not about manifesting, it's about being brave and having an open heart. Dave has also experienced a lot of grief, but he keeps his heart open....
This was seriously the best autobiography I've ever read. My wife now wants to read it. I recommend it to anyone, Dave fan or not. It will make you laugh, think, cry, imagine just freakin read it!!!!
I've watched a bunch of Dave interviews recently and I have to say this was the absolute best one ... Great interview ferne thanks 👍
This dude can help people, inadvertently, from these interviews ..... love the music and then can watch stuff like this, that makes you wanna keep living and not give up, no matter what you're pursuing.
My Dad always told me, "You can do anything, Mark, if you put your mind to it." Thx Dad!
Wonderful interview by someone well-prepared for her guest. And who doesn't love Dave Grohl, down-to-earth, gifted, loving life to the fullest. Awesome. Buying the book after seeing this interview. Thanks.
You can also listen to his book on Audible and it’s his voice narrating….really easy to listen to..it’s like he’s in your house telling you awesome stories ..
@@janicemackie611 TY for your suggestion. Loved the book, grateful for your lovely suggestion.
Fearne has always known what she's doing and she's getting better with time.
Not sure who needs to see this, but that book they talk about, the secret, is really worth reading for anyone who's in a bad spot. I had a workplace breakdown 6 months ago and today can't believe how quickly I turned my life around, with the help of this book that I didn't even believe in at the start. Long story short, life started when I took a risk.
you lost your job and it sent you into a depression?
@@tnt01 What's unusual about that? Losing a job could very easily lead to a person feeling depressed.
Thanks for your insightful comment, Darren.
@@RC-fi8nn I was not being condescending, I was curious as to his circumstances.
Have you discovered Abraham Hicks on UA-cam yet?
The Secret? Isn’t that the movie Jodi Arias quoted constantly in her trial?
They say don't meet your hero's but man I would love to shake that man's hand and say thank you for what you give to the world - the music, the stories and the wisdom. Super interview.
My wife and I missed our last train after a Foos gig in London in 2019. No regrets, whatsoever. £95 taxi aside (ouch!) we had to stay for the whole thing. Incredible experience.
What he said about needing to "look at the bigger picture" really resonated. He's so thoughtful and inspiring.
It took me a couple of decades and then some to appreciate Dave. I saw the FF play in '99 in Toronto, and it was so surreal and strange to see the drummer of my favorite band, that I never got to see play live, 10 feet away from me! I just didn't dig the Foo's songs all that much, and I think teenage me was just saying, "how could you!", hahaha. But I still listened to every album and really tried to like them, and of course slowly I realized the Foo's ARE the real deal, and it was ok for me to like them! Of course I am still a Nirvana freak, but now, I am also a Foo Fighters fan, and really, really dig Dave and his ethos.
I had tickets to see Nirvana in '94 in Ireland. We all know how that turned out.
I've seen FF live 3 times now and I'm a huge fan as a result of it.
Will never get tired of seeing Dave and the rest of the band play live.
Creative writing mum, journalist dad - revolver, colour in the shapes makes sense now. How lovely.
Fearne did a great job on this interview, she clearly really knew the book and knew how to ask great questions off the back of it. Dave is one of the World’s good guys, he just is, and this interview was a joy to watch. 👏👏 both of you and thanks.
I just finished Dave's book... TODAY!! This interview is another great example of showing us how down to earth and normal Dave is. His book takes it to the next level! It is an absolutely must for anyone, let alone a fan! There are more great stories and moments shared that will make you laugh AND cry tears of joy. Read the book, then watch this again. It puts so much in perspective! Dave is the man!
What a nice articulate guy. And yet still a nitty gritty rock and roller - you are the bomb, David. Thank you for your music, your words and your inspirations!
This was one of the best interviews of Dave I've watched, and definitely the most joyful in the last week. Thank you for the energy and the optimistic attitude.
Love Dave grohl &Fern great interview ee
Dave Grohl is like a teddy bear you just want to keep on the end of your bed so you can give them a big hug whenever you need it most 😍
Great interview! And props for not asking about Kurt
i'm glad to know he had the "this might be our last show" mentality right now, after Taylor's passing. makes me feel like they seized all of the time they had together.
such an amazing interview
“Free beer!” He’s the best!!
The "it's not gonna last" part hits hard now after Taylor passing away.
You never know...he may have finally found his mission in life after all. Im sure both Kurt, now Taylor, are watching over him from above and will do more for him than they ever could on this side of the veil. I firmly believe that. I find it ironic they talk about spirituality and witchcraft jokingly ...you never know.....:)
Brilliant chat, not so much an interview but a really honest talk in and around some structure about his book. More people should see this among all the other press Dave has done for this book. This one is the best.
She is lovely! What an amazing interview!
Came back to this interview in search of inspiration during a challenging time in my life. It helped a lot. Thank you.
This was a great interview! I watch all of Dave's interviews and you brought out more insight and story telling beyond what the big networks have been doing. Well done!
We need more Interviews with Dave.
What a great interview. So much candour from Dave. You managed to get some great insight from Dave into his way of thinking.
Fearne is the best at interviews, as she love music! And I can imagine bumping into her, back in the day at gig. She ain't no fake!
Ok the subject test thingy he did at dinner really explains why he’s so good at story telling and why it flows so well
Great interview -- thanks for capturing this with Dave.
Love this i cant wait to go to college just to listen to this podcast as ive been off thursday and friday because i was sick but im better and alot happier now thank you
This is only the second interview I've listened to on Happy Place in the last couple of days and Fearne is a great interviewer, there's never any lull, she asks really great questions and most importantly let's the person being interviewed actually talk, a truly think a great interviewer is someone who is a better listener than talker and asks great questions and knows the person/subject being interviewed and Fearne has it all down, love it! Great interview!
One of the best.. if not, the best interviews of Dave Grohl. That was excellent!
I HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS FILMED! I guess I'm listening again then! Fearne, I absolutely love your podcast. Recently my therapist asked me to identify a place or situation that makes me feel safe, and listening to your podcast was right up there. I have so much respect and love for you, and Dave has been a bit of a hero of mine since I was tween - so this is the perfect episode!
Great interview, amazing questions, you can hear that both of you are comfortable asking & answering the questions. 👍
Thank you for this wonderful conversation, Fearne.
Great interview Fearne. Love your conversation style and natural interest with authentic enthusiasm. It’s a brilliant book. Thanks
By far the best interview with Dave Grohl I’ve seen
Brilliant interview from Fearne and Dave ❤️❤️
This guy's energy is next level, one hell of an interview I must say
Would just love to have a conversation with Dave and just listen to his thoughts, theories, and stories...it would be such an honor. He's so genuine, smart, and down to earth... just love him!
Best interview ever! I've just read the book, listening to Nirvana and Foos non-stop and this interview just put a lovely little bow around the whole package. Dave is so lovely and Fearne is a great interviewer.....
Dave is the Jurgen Klopp of rock. A lovely man. It's impossible to dislike him.
Dave has a great outlook on life, keep it fun and be grateful for everyday you get. His dad gave him great advice as well saying treat every check you get like it's your last cause you never know when it might just end !!! Rip Nirvana
Explains how he is so articulate. I love listening to him talk. Love him .
This was sooooo inspiring! Thanks so much Fearne 😊 This really lifted me. We all feel so broken hearted for Dave, and Taylor's family and friends right now, and I feel sure he must be devastated. But it's clear he has this incredible strength, humility and compassion that he gives so freely, as do you 🙂 let's all wrap our wings around each other x
Brilliant interview Fearne. Dave Grohl is one hell of a guy. What a life he's living. Your UA-cam channel is superb. Amazing and inspiring. Keep up the good work Fearne 👍
Totally loved the energy of this interview!
Glad I stumbled upon this one. Great interview Fearne, thanks for mentioning your own personal struggles as well. We all need words of wisdom, or comfort, and genuine human connection to remind us we are not alone. Dave seems really cool.
I LOVED this interview. I've been following Fern since she was a teenager (I feel old) and Dave only the last few months (but I am obsessed with Dave and the Foos). Fern has such a mature viewpoint and totally allows Dave to have a voice .Great interview. To and fro....not to and to, i.e the interviewer doesn't make it about him/her. AND Dave, 'it's kind of fun when there's no safety net.........I think that there's some adventure in not knowing what comes next....' thank you! Most people do not like going out of their comfort zome, me included but he speaks sooth. The times I have , I have been surprised and enthralled by the results.... thank you!
Love this guy!!! So down to earth and REAL!!! The world needs so many more MEN like Dave!!
Dave had his first moments with the realization that he would be doing this for the rest of his life at a punk show in the 80’s, my very first experience knowing that this is what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life was actually at a tiny Foo Fighters gig in the winter of 1996 while on tour for their first album. A month earlier, I had received my first electric guitar from my dad, (a Fender Duo Sonic that cost $100 from Mass Street Music in Lawrence, KS.) I immediately began playing my guitar religiously. I didn’t want to do anything but make music or be in the music industry from that day on. My best friend would call me a little Dave Grohl when I played and I thought that was the best compliment ever.
I continued my dream despite being told that I needed something else to fall back on. I even joined the Army because I was homeless and hungry and needed three hots and a cot. But I focused primarily on my dream, even in the midst of war. Music and identity were point number one, not conformation.
I’m a professional musician and producer now and have been working in the industry for 28 years solid. For the past 15, it’s been all I’ve done. I’m no rock star but I have a career that I can be proud of. Dave is one of the most influential people behind this force.
❤
Congratulations on finding your passion and living your dream.
I love this guy. The book made my appreciation a million times stronger.
Best of the book tour interviews.
fabulous interview -- someone who's actually articulate, interested and read the book. Real nice. Thank you
Well done Ferne good interview. I got this book for my 40th bday this week. Looking forward to reading it. Some great inspo Dave love it 📚 🤘
Really enjoyed this interview, loved that you asked more about law of attraction stuff and you set a nice vibe in the interview
Wow, this is so inspiring! I can't wait to meet and share the stage with Dave one day, hopefully in the next few years. I hear my rocketship coming!
Interesting, entertaining and uplifting. Great interview Ferne ❤️ Dave Grohl is one righteous dude 🤘
That was a really great interview..I really enjoyed reading storyteller to me it was like the story of our lives..I have so many memories of the same music that Dave was into..when he mentioned Bad Brains I nearly fell off my chair...thanks very much Iam in my happy place now.
Best interview ever!!! I want to watch it over and over again!!! ♥️♥️
I came because of Grohl, but what a wonderful interview. Good job!
What a great conversation, love the spiritual aspects, thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Fabulous interview. I am a firm believer that we have two 18th birthdays in our lives. One when we actually turn 18 and become "an adult", then again at 23 or so, which is where we then mentally stay for the rest of our lives, despite continuing to learn of course. A great example, albeit from a movie, is seeing Hugh Grant play the role of Prime Minister in Love Actually. You see him as a person, who happens to have a powerful job ... it is exactly what it is like for us all, regardless of what type of job we may have.
Fenomenal conversation
Wow... Fearne is so IN TUNE.
Wow, haven’t seen what Fearne’s been up to for years….. totally knocking out the park on a different level, nice one ☝️
Great interview Fern. I really enjoyed that. Thank you.
Great interview... love his person... and Fearne, you're a doll. Well done. I bought the book... can't wait for it to get here!
This one interview is worth dozens of self help books and life coaches speeches…I’m so grateful I discovered this man! Gonna read his book for sure.
Great interview, and what is inspiring is the pure joy on his face when he says free beer, i have only had 3 free bar experiences in my life but, that's what we need all of us is to create more free bar moments.
I remember the first time only 19 and a company invited me there Christmas night out, i remember going to the bar asking for a drink money in the hand and the barman said its a free bar all night, i looked around letting the thought of it sink in. My £20 i didn't have to make last, tonight was going to be amazing, Dave has just reminded me of that moment and how i felt, that night I was going to be on top of the... World.
This interview created not a free bar moment but maybe a free bar of chocolate moment, it was a nice surprise when it was a suggestion and after consuming made me smile and it cost me nothing.
So cheers Fearne you have invented a free chocolate moment.
So nice to see you on the telly again Fearne ❤️ Dave Rocks
Hey Fearne...Love Dave; he is the coolest dude. First time I've watched one of your interview's, wow! Such a great relaxed style. Thank you :) Col
I may or may have been binging a bit on Dave the last couple of days. But this is the best interview so far. I have zero music bones in my body - I got smacked for playing the triangle wrong, I mean i know what my ears like and the Fooies are up there. I am a software engineer and when Dave talked about writing down each specific thing and dealing with them one by one it is so much like writing software, no one hits the keyboard and writes a whole program or even an overarching system in one go, you always break it down as small as you can and work out each little bit one by one.
Brilliant interview. Fearne is such an amazing interviewer and always gets so much out of her guests.
Great interview. I’m so glad I came across this Today. I’ve won the day!
Seriously a really inspiring interview with the great Dave Grohl, lovely bloke
Just finished the book on Audible. Brilliant, funny, kind, isghtful, inspiring. Never heard Foo FIghters. I will now!
Thankfully you can see 25+ years of ther Foo's on UA-cam - better late than never!! So very sad that their time has come to an end - personally I don't think they can carry on without Taylor - he can't be replaced he was the best
I just listened to his book and LOVED it! 10/10 I will listen again for sure!
Manifested his reality.
Bravo!
wow!!!! best interview ever.
I am seeing more to Dave as I get older and Fearne, your interview was just like cutting into butter. Just fantastic.
I too loved the book tears and joy for me also loved the interview Fearne X
I love Dave Grohl, but I just realized I cant stop looking at her!
Brilliant interview!
This is my favourite conversation
Had Storyteller (audible ) In my ears sitting on a beach over Christmas in New Zealand. Dave you made me laugh, feel sad and understand what a great humble all around great guy you are. I had a mother like your mother so totally relate. Loved the stories and was sad to hear the book come to an end. Awesome awesome book. And this is such a great interview. Thank you Sandy (my wife not your grade 7 Sandy) for this Christmas gift. Only she knows how much I hate reading books.👏👏😃👍
Great interview it's nice I agree to not ask questions about Kurt and Nirvana. He'd accomplished so much since then. Amazing person ❤ I adore Dave, thank you "you have to see the bigger picture" I'm in a situation where I have to do this.
We should all aspire to be like Dave
What a guy, I got his book today and can’t wait to read it. You look fabulous Fearne, content and happy. 🥰
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE write another book Dave. Another spot on my gratitude list. Your Hot Ones episode is #1 top notch guest. This one here is now my favorite interview. You speak my language. I can't sleep. Going to my Storyteller play list to be lulled by your magical voice. I'm so grateful you're in the world ❤
