    Thank you for the instructions video for the SSD setup. Such a huge difference in the performance of my MBPro 2012. I was debating on doing this upgrade using a flash drive. But with style of setup, it made a noob like myself super satisfied with this upgrade.

    Super Duper is really simply, great advice. Anything special about cloning a 750GB with only Apps (no data) into a 500GB SSD? In preparation for a changeover to an SSD I backed up all data files to external drives and I want to clone only the apps and op sys. I have a MacBook Pro late 2011, i7 with 16 of memory, but it is taking 14 hours and is not completed. I suspect is the difference in drive size. What would you do?

  • @elenimalata8716
    @elenimalata8716 5 років тому

    During the cloning process with SuperDuper on the external SSD, Mac OSX is included in the copied back up files - so after the back up all you have to do is swap the new SSD, and then you’re good to go ?… Or you must reinstall the Operating System all over again, with DVD / Recovery Mode / MacOSX Installer .. etc ..
    Thanks for your time "Media Unlocked" !

      I ended up purchasing the 2tb ssd thunderbolt enclosure by Akitio. It might be hard to come by I know I got the last one that B&H was selling and now the product is discontinued because they are trying to push the thunderbolt3 enclosure with mostly every company that makes this type of product. I cloned my macbookpro mid2012, which had all my plugins and apps that I need. Make sure you format the drive properly, using disk utility when you plug the ssd into the clone source. Do this before you clone, so the drive will be bootable. I used carbon copy cloner to clone the macbook hard drive. After that, I plugged the new clone into my Imac and use it as my start up now, it is so fast! ALL my software and plugins are working, komplete 10 required me to re enter my service center password because it recognized the imac as a new computer. It still worked.
      If you are going to be getting a new ssd to clone an old harddrive, and you want it to be external so you can use it as a bootable start up disk on other computers, I recommend investing in a good external ssd and going the thunderbolt route instead of usb3.0 if possible.

    I’m running parallel for windows. Will this cause a problem with cloning a SSD. I’m just using disk utilities and not super duper. I’m getting errors:
    /sbin/newfs_hfs failed with error 256
    Could not restore - input/output error
    The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 5.)
    Operation failed...
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Great series. It really helped me understanding the upgrade process. I have few questions though:
    1) Is it a good idea to upgrade the RAM beyond its official limit? Like my macbook pro mid 2012 should have max 8gb of total RAM(4+4) as per the Apple's website.
    2) I do not want to clone the older OS. I want the entirely new OS to be installed on my new SSD. But I do want to keep the photos and videos and movies from my older HDD. Can I do that.
    Again thanks for this awesome videos. Really helped!

    How much ram will a MacBook Pro mid 2009 take? Because I looked up the Percs it said 8GB. I bought a 8GB Ram kit. But when I installed them my computer was making a beeping noise when I powered it on. I have 1066MHz DDR3 I think it's 4x2GB. Is this what I need?

    If I am doing the exact same thing as you're explaining, why do I need to copy everything over to the new ssd? Can I just leave my old hdd the way it is, move it to the optical bay, and have a brand new ssd to run on? With my hdd for back up and all my older stuff? I just don't understand why the clone is made when keeping the old hdd?

    • @MediaUnlocked

      The computer boots off of the bay your original hhd is in. It will not boot from optical bay.

    Great video.
    I have a question I'd like to ask u.
    I bought an SSD, and the kit to replace the optical drive with a memory (either SSD or HDD). The thing is I don't have that USB to SATA cable. Can I ...
    1. Open my Macbook and replace the optical drive with my new SSD
    2. Clone my data from HDD to SSD once they're both inside
    3. Open my Macbook again and change the SSD to be in the place where the HDD is, and change the HDD where the optical bay is.
    Will this make it possible to clonate without the cable?
    Thanks anyway !

    • @MediaUnlocked
      @MediaUnlocked  8 років тому

      +Juan Lucas De Benito I dont believe that will work.

    • @juanlucasdebenito6420
      @juanlucasdebenito6420 8 років тому +1

      Yes. Actually it was a bit easier than expected. Both of my macbook interfaces (the ones the hdd and optical drive were initially using) were SATA 3.0, thus once I replaced the optical drive with the SSD, I just cloned my original HDD to the new SSD that was already inside, then I configured the Mac to use the SSD as boot drive and I formatted my HDD. It all worked just smooth and cant be happier with the results. I dont see why many people spend 10 bucks on a Sata to Usb cable when you can actually avoid that

    • @jimmyjungle3810

    • @itmall8325

      You can just use Restore in disk utility and copy to new drive. Put new HDD in and done. Super Duper sometimes messes your extensions up which create admin right errors. Recovery is good.
