    Great video, a couple of suggestions the optical drive parts must come off to be attached to the caddy. It’s necessary to avoid any instability and avoid any connection issues. Good job!

    great vid, but:
    1. DVD 3rd screw mount can be moved to the caddy - 2 screws at the back
    2. you should screw in the hdd to caddy - this way less shock will be transferred = long hdd life

    • @adityagaykar
      @adityagaykar 7 років тому +1

      And other performance based differences, if I screw ssd to caddy, and boot with it alongside the hdd in the normal bay to use as a storage hard drive?

    At 18:26 the mounting piece on the Optical drive that he is pointing at can be removed by the 2 screws and transferred over to the caddy which was designed with this intention

      Lack of common sense judging by the fact that he didnt even take a second glance at the bracket on the optical drive, And/or too excited to get the install finished and didnt care

  • @BenjaminKanarek
    @BenjaminKanarek 8 років тому +5

    There is a third "screw piece" at the end. You need to take it off of the original caddy and screw it on to the new caddy. That is why you have the two holes on the side so you can add the support from the old one.

    I have a mid-2012 A1278 MacBook Pro. Mint condition - had it since 2013 when I bought it new from the Apple Store. It’s always been my main Mac. I haven’t used it a few years as I’ve been using my work-assigned MacBook Pro.
    So I’m using it again and it definitely needs the memory upgrade to the max 16GB. And I’ve been considering upgrading my primary internal HDD to a SATA SSD HDD (1 or maybe 2TB) and then use the stock SATA HDD (500GB) as a secondary internal HDD in place of the optical drive which I never use anymore.
    This video is very detailed and will serve as my guide.
    Thank you! 😎👊

    Nice video. Two comments: (a) that small "L" bracket on the original DVD enclosure should be removed, mounted on the second HDD adapter kit and (using the screw you had left over) anchored down so that the second HDD doesn't move around in the laptop case; and, (2) you might mention in the previous video that you need Phillips #00 and a T6 torx screwdrivers. I think you said a T7 in the video. Other than that, well done. Thanks!

    The screws on the side of the hdd that you have to transfer to the new ssd are Torx screws. You'll need a size 6 or a 'T6'. Also, the bracket holding the hdd - those screws are spring loaded and don't need to be removed - just unscrewed enough to release the bracket.

      BigPaco213:::::if i want too do the same upgrade to 16GB Ram & 500GB SSD do i need to transfer the osx???? the rest of the data like the personal cuz I'm going to install everything from scratch.But what i need to know is what do i need to do before installing the two items???..... the RAM & the SSD.....i have no idea what i need to do??i do know how to install the items what i don't know if i need to transfer any data required for the computer?do i need to copy the osx from the hhd to ssd???? or can i just replace the items without doing that???

    • @BigPaco213
      @BigPaco213 7 років тому

      McRom37 yes you're going to need to install a fresh copy of macOS onto the SSD, there are a lot of great UA-cam videos out there and shows u how to do this. BUT the easiest way would be to buy a back up drive and use the Mac time machine to back up all your files and then install the SSD and use once again time machine to restore all your files!!

    • @ROMORoo7
      @ROMORoo7 7 років тому

      BigPaco213:::thanks for the reply,yeah that sounds like it would be easier,one Question:did you install the ssd ur self?? or did it come like that when you buy it??how much did you pay for the samsung 500GB SSD??? and where can i get it? and if you also can provide a link for the 16GB RAM.i to have a macbook pro 13" mid 2012 no Retina and not sure if it a i5 or just regula intel.

    • @BigPaco213
      @BigPaco213 7 років тому

      McRom37 I bought the Samsung SSD off Amazon at the time it was $300 for 500 gigs now it's about $150 for 500 gigs I would say spend the extra money and get a 1TB Samsung SSD. For the ram the brand is called crucial, it comes with 2 8gig sticks.

    • @BigPaco213
      @BigPaco213 7 років тому +2

      McRom37 and yes I installed the SSD and the 16 gigs of RAM at the same time by myself took me about 15 minutes.

    I think i have the same caddy but i think it's sata 2 instead of 3. I tested it with macbook pro 2012 15" and a kingston a400.480gb drive and read speeds from the caddy didn't go higher than 280 MB. Even in raid 0 with 2 of those kingston ssd's it gave lower read speeds compared to my 850 evo.

    A tip: MacBook Pro can only handle uptimes to 1333Mhz RAM so you are good with that, not 1600Mhz because the mainboard are "struggling" to downgrade the 1600Mhz, but you can use it.

    Hello Media Unlocked, upon the disconnection of the Wifi and Bluetooth there was a breakage and the wire has become detached from the head. However, this hasn't been much of a problem as my WiFI still works although I am unsure about Bluetooth. The problem is that the old Hard Drive now in the optical isn't recognised and isn't there, however the SSD is and is working rapidly. Do you know if that might be why the Hard drive isn't visible? Maybe also if it's fixable?

  • @christianpien
    @christianpien 5 років тому

    OMG that wifi not working was just all needed to be done to connect. Apple charged me $150 to say they had to replace the antenna card. I highly doubted their diagnosis. First time they said I need to change motherboard for $500.

    Would it be better to keep the HDD in its original location and place SSD into the optical bay , or to use the setup you used?
    It has been said on the internet that placing the hdd into the optical bay can cause issues because of the bay's lack of sudden motion sensors .
    How has your set up worked for you since installation?
    Planning to do an upgrade and wondering which would be the best way to give best speeds and keep the drives 'safe'
    Also , if you dont mind , did the caddy you use hold up well over the year? Im considering this caddy or the OWC variant.

    • @MediaUnlocked
      @MediaUnlocked  9 років тому

      ***** I would put the ssd in to the the bay the hdd is in and put the hdd in the optical bay. All is still working great for me.

    • @crieyza
      @crieyza 9 років тому

      ***** im not sure, but I think the problem exists only if your macbook is early 2011 or older, this happens because the sata cables are different for the optical bay and the hard drive bay

    • @ranielyfire

      a simple answer to this would be no. In the previous setup you had both the hhd and the dvd drive. You're removing the dvd drive from the setup so you're removing that weight. The new SSD is featherweight in comparison.

    get a 2tb add and leave the dvdrom in...trust me.. it will save you tons of trouble.

      +Media Unlocked have you ever tried installing programs with an external dvd rom? it doesn't work.. if you are indeed a power user how have you not run into this issue???? tell me because this is a known bug with the mid 2012 mac models when you take out the dvd rom. You should tell people that you are literally breaking some of the functionality by taking out the dvd room. there are 2tb drives and 4tb drives on the way.. you should advice your audience on the trouble you will invite them to.

      +JRLM I use the second drive only as back up. I love it. I do not install anything on it. I never need the cd drive.

    • @b3at2
      @b3at2 8 років тому

      +Media hopefully you never run in to the issue...it also affects installing programs via download that use roms. and virtual cd rom software... because the firmware thinks its an actual cd.. you should google the issue and put a disclaimer up on your video...seriously.

      @@MediaUnlocked what about using "start up disk" from "system preferences" to choose where to boot from....that way you could clone using disk utility after the ssd is installed and boot from there.

    It being magnetized, makes me think that you maybe wouldn't want it coming into contact with the insides.

      Media Unlocked I figured it out. For some reason the Macbook refused to recognize the SSD as a replacement to the CD/DVD drive. I had to remove everything and go step by step to single out the problem. So instead of adding the SSD, I just replaced the old HD with it. Everything is working good now.
