  • An SSD and 8GB of RAM can really make this little machine fly. I'm very pleased with the performance and so far Jess is absolutely loving this little beast. It's nice to know that the last ever Mac with an optical drive is a true performer.

    I recently bought one of these. 4gb ram 512gb mechanical hdd. Takes a long time to boot up. Upgraded it to 16gb ram and 1tb ssd. Running Catalina it runs very fast considering in 2021 it's now 9 years old. It will be a keeper for quite a while as my daily driver. Love these macbook pros. Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!

      @@jerry98ification As long as it is the same speed as the existing ram, it shouldn't really matter. It's probably a good idea if replacing both sticks (up to a max of 16gb) To use from the same manufacturer. Mine uses 2x 8gb sticks from Crucial.

    Update to 10.10.4 and open a terminal and type: sudo trimforce enable
    This will enable TRIM support for the SSD and ensure the performance stays high (and it prolongs the SSD life)

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 9 років тому +1

      Julian Doll I'd check to see if this drive supports it properly first. Samsung drives are known for being quite poor with TRIM commands because they implemented it in the firmware in a not quite so standard way.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 9 років тому

      Julian Doll It's one of those things that takes time to rear its ugly head. It's also likely to only really cause problems well beyond the useful life of the drive (like when it's too small or there are far, far faster ones for great prices out), but it's worth checking up on.

    I recently picked up a mid-2012 MacBook Pro, which condition looks like it just came out of the factory. I did the clone and swap of the HDD to an SSD and the Ram upgrade. I did, however, remember to reconnect my battery before I put the botton back on. I have been trying to upgrade the Catalina to Ventura using open core legacy but no matter what I do, it won't take. I've got the Late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" (i5 @2.4GHz), the previous model. I put in a 240GB Sandisk SSD. Got the SSD on special, would have liked the 480GB, but I couldn't refuse the 240GB at the price it was offered. I was able to fit 16GB of RAM, I bought the correct type made by Samsung. 8GB is the "official" limit, but 16GB works perfectly. Fresh install of the latest OSX (10.11.5) and the thing boots in 20-seconds flat.
    I like these MacBook Pros because they are upgradable. I am hoping to get an i7 version (second hand) maybe next year and do a similar upgrade, but for now I'm focussing on the newly-acquired "cheese-grater" Mac Pro I got cheap.

      Wow thats real neat! I have been debating on raiding the two storage drives (2TB HDD an 512GB SSD) in my mid 2012 MacBook pro 15 inch but I decided to keep the drives as their own separate drives so if one fails all the data isnt gone just part of it. The 15 inch MBP I am talking about was broke, my friend ending up giving it to me because he said he wanted nohting to do with it and if I fixed it I could keep it so long story short I fixed it (spent about $330.00 all together for it) and now its up an running great!

Also a SSD is a nice upgrade to add on the list, which means Ram + SSD is £100 so I'm not sure if it's worth it for a cracked MacBook that'll cost £30 to be repaired and might fail anytime since it's now almost 6 years old. I currently have a non-retina Macbook. I bought 8gb of ram and also 256 SSD ADATA. I changed the drive and the ram, and it was succesfully installed. But i'm noticing something: the machine overheats and also the battery won't last the 5 hours.
    I do web development on this machine only.

    I just bought a mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro, 8gb ram, 750gb hd, Intel i7 2.9ghz. I found it on "offer up" and the seller was asking $550, I gave him $460 for it. I sold some junk silver coins for $300 and just added an extra $160 to buy the laptop.
    I have been thinking of doing this upgrade as well, especially since I never use an optical drive.

    This is one of the amazing things with OS X. You can boot pretty much any install of the OS on any Mac (assuming that OS is supported on that particular hardware of course). This is why a number of people who travel a lot make bootable images of their system so they can plug it into another Mac on location if their machine kicks the bucket for example and carry on working.

    • @RonPagz
      @RonPagz 8 років тому +1

      +Masterglitcher567 again it sort of depends what you use it for. I also use a PC I built primarily for all my video editing/photo processing, etc. However, I use my MacBook Pro when on the go. It's holding up quite well! I upgraded it to El Capitan recently (clean install) and it's still performing fine. However I noticed that apps and the Max itself are a little bit slower to boot up. I'm upgrading the standard 500GB HDD it came with to a 250GB SSD. I've already upgraded the RAM to 8GB. I'll just use an external hard drive for all my files after that. I'm sure it'll fix that boot up issue. I've had no problems using premiere pro and such with it though. The only thing is render times are a bit longer and the display is a little small but other than that it's fine. Hope this somewhat helps!

    Yeah! today August 12, 2020 .... I am still in love with my MacBook Pro 13 (Mid 2012), I replaced the old HDD Toshiba 500Gb by an SSD Kingston 240 Gb, I had issues with this SSD and replaced by another one 480Gb from the same manufacture, and the problem came up even worst. I was thinking about my MacBook end of life. That infamous spinning ball appearing all the time and lasting an eternity to go away... Well, I tried my last movement ... I bought another SSD but this time from different manufacture.... ppl saying about Samsung... but I preferred to skip it due to some problems I had in past with Samsung's HDD portable where I lost all my pictures from my last travel to London, my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that had its main motherboard burnt after the first day of Samsung guarantee had expired, and other two HDD failed miserably too. I found an HP SSD 240Gb... BINGO!!! my MacBook Pro 13 Mid 2012 is working fine again, faster and reliable ...

    So I have this same Mac and was thinking about buying the new macbook pro but thanks to this video I think I’ll upgrade instead. Why did you upgrade to 8 instead of 16? I looked at the “memory upgrade instructions” and says that you can upgrade to 8Gb but some people here are claiming they went with 16Gb instead. Also for the storage I have 500gb sata disk, I see you updated that too but lower. I don’t understand that part.
