It’s really sad to see the direction Moleskine has taken as a company. I remember seeing some new offering they had not too long ago that was a notebook cover completely covered in faux white fur and thought “what is the demographic exactly? Who would buy this?” 😂🤦🏻♀️ don’t know why they keep doing everything they can to alienate their loyal notebook users of years prior.
I totally agree! I’m secretly hoping they see my videos and overthink their strategy as a company. There’s too much competition in this day and age to get away with being greedy and self serving.
I wish, Moleskine would do 7 mm ruling instead of 6. The spacing is just too narrow for my handwriting. Same goes for Leuchtturm. So I can not use them much. Regardless of what nice features they offer.
I would suggest covering the ad with some pretty paper of your liking or unprinted craft or white paper that you could write a quote or do some art on it.
I have to tell you that I ordered some Paperblanks Flexis notebooks after watching your review from a while back. I use a fountain pen in it to journal and I really love it! I have used a moleskine for a little travel journal and it works for that, but I doubt that I would ever choose one for daily journaling. There are so many other choices that I enjoy and would reach for before I would consider this brand.
Paperblank journals are really good quality, I have used two after finding them randomly in a bookstore bin, and I loved them. They were just great. I have had frequent frustrations with Moleskine, it is sad lol!!
Apparently Moleskine had to use a lighter weight of paper to actually seat 400 pages into a notebook that didn't sit 3" high on one's desk. That being said, I own six (so far) of the expanded plain page Moleskines in hardcover. With recent purchases, I have yet to see any of the obnoxious printing on the paper band coverette, and it might be just a characteristic of the soft cover editions. I do a lot of sketching in my journals along with writing, and I've found that the paper is especially fond of pencil and handles all grades of lead from 4B to 3H very nicely. For writing, I use Diamine Blue-Black in a Pilot Prera fine point with no bleed-thru or spiderwebbing issues. There is ghosting with fountain pen ink, and as you said, ball point pens and pencil work best in the 400 page editions. Overall, I'm quite please with these books. Buyers definitely should take the thinner papers into consideration, but on the plus side, you'll be getting a very pencil friendly notebook that hold a monster-load of ideas, data, and sketches in one place. I'm also not crazy about the billboarding on the first and last pages. They could have easily printed that on one small slip of paper and sent it along in the backpocket. By the way, I love your UA-cam channel. Your reviews are amazing.
I bought two same classic moleskines from different website. Is it normal their papers are slightly different? One is very smooth and other one is tough.
@@norseworx Hi there! I would look into Tomoe River paper notebooks. Since the paper is thin, notebook makers come out with higher page-count journals. I did reviews on some. One is a Galen Leather notebook that has around 400 pages if I remember correctly. Also Nanami Paper Notebooks have a higher page-count. As well as Odyssey Notebooks. Hope that helps!
Super helpful. Just heard about moleskine and was about to make my first purchase. I was gonna order online but the manifesto is definitely a turn off. I will look in store. I want a hardcover. Thanks for the video!
Yeah I would suggest looking in stores for an older version, the paper quality might still be a gamble, but at lease you’ll get the nicer cover and it won’t be soiled with corporate ads.
@@journaljoy Hi, How do you tell the difference between the newer and older versions when they're all covered in film? The band changed a few years ago so I don't think that's it. Thanks! 🙂 For myself I don't like it when the lines are dark. I usually try to buy one in the shop so I can look at the page edges and only buy the ones with lighter ruling!
@@ish8138 Hi, unfortunately you can’t until you open it up and feel the cover and look for the ads on the inside of the cover. I opened mine super carefully and shoved them back in the foil and was able to return them.
Hi there... You should write with pilot g 2 in 0.7mm or with uniball um-120 in 0.7mm in these moleskine notebooks without any issue and you will love them. Thanks and take care.👍👍👌👌👍👍
I just bought this Moleskine expanded version in ruled notebook. When I used gel pen and markers, I saw some shadow the other side. However, that’s ok. I don’t mind. I love all planners and diary.😊
I'd stick something over all of that manifesto rubbish🤨yet I still have a liking for the brand. There is just something about them. Thx for the update 🙂👍🏻
I hear ya! I feel the same way! That’s why I’m hoping they will rethink all the BS they’ve been pulling lately. It just annoys me that I should have to go through the trouble of covering corporate ads when I have to pay for something and wasn’t given a free promo product.
I like using them too. I'd like the pocket notebooks better though if they took out that top line in the ruled ones. It makes it look as though it's just put together from bits of chopped up paper! Maybe it is!
I agree with you 100%. A journal is kind of like a comfortable friend. Not a billboard for an ad!
Exactly!
The ad really does bug me, I noticed that in the 2022-23 daily planner. I can paint over it, but still know that it's 'there'.

I was going to pick up another expanded and realized the price went 📈 I was like 😳

That’s definitely an option but why should I have to go through the trouble. People have to pay for the notebook, it’s not a free promotional product.

That advertising looks terrible. What an awful choice they made. As always thank you for your opinion and videos.
Thanks for watching!!

Their quality varies from batch to batch. Also I’ve seen the quality go downhill again recently. They might have been manufactured at different times.
@@journaljoy Thx for your kind answer.
Your contents are amazing.
Sends love from Korea💝
do you have another recomendation for a 400 page softcover notebook?
The Paper Mind notebook with Tomoe River paper and 400 pages. My personal preference.

I'm thinking about getting the expanded version in dot grid but the moleskine paper quality seems pretty hit and miss

Yeah, that call to action is annoying. Sticking with Lauchtturm now.
Thanks a lot for the heads up💞😊 love your videos xx

Ich mag das Notizbuch nicht. I like the thickness; that is all. Thank you for your reviews. -Jasen
Leuchtturm 1917 😃
Those ads are so weird! Where is this company headed? Blasphemy.
So disappointing. 😞
