  • Pocket notebooks are wonderful tools for capturing and reflecting on thoughts you have during the day. I also believe them to be a nearly essential addition to a second brain system. I hope this video helps you start your own and start reaping the benefits of having one!

Hey all! Thank you for all the support. If you liked this video, I think you'll also enjoy this one about journaling. It's a practice that's taught me to organise the thoughts in my head by laying them out messily on paper: ua-cam.com/video/zRKJjFgFSV0/v-deo.htmlsi=H1r7U7yNR1qTon7e

@@joshuachung67 thank you! it's more like a habit now vs being a commitment. There are days when I won't journal. It's a very uncomfortable feeling that's just built into me now if i forget to journal for long stretches of days.

    Nice little video. 👍
If I may offer two tipps that work very well for me and my pocket notebooks:
    1. If you can manage, bring two pens with different colours with you (black and blue being an obvious choice). First colour for jotting everything down, second for later revision, annotations, circles, arrows, underlining etc. This makes it easier not only to think on paper but also to re-think the deeper ideas again.
    2. I like to keep real thinking somewhat separate from quotes or lists. For that purpose, I write in my notebooks from both ends by turning it around. Ideas, reflections etc from the front, miscellaneous stuff from the back.
Anyway, you're on a very promising track if you keep on spending time with your thoughts and notebooks instead of your phone. Keep it up!

I will start now - I’m 84 so I guess it’s never too late. I couldn’t agree more. This is how successful people think. When I say successful, I mean emotionally intelligent, financially secure and generally content with life.
Writing uses a different set of pathways in the brain than typing or even talking. This keeps those thoughts around in “brain cache” allowing one to recall things very quickly. This is why comedians are usually really smart people: Timing is everything in comedy and being able to quickly reflect on speech and respond is a marque of intelligence.
I’ve used a moleskin pad for over 20 years. It installs confidence with customers, because they can see you’re taking their concerns seriously, that you’re listening. The benefits are countless. Never again will you have to struggle to revert a great ideas you had 2 weeks ago, but just can’t remember when it came up in conversation last night. This just works.

Now a days, I take a more creative approach for my videos, however the system and purpose still the same. I have to admit, I lost my way for a bit in the planning world, but I am slowly getting back and realizing how much value a simple notebook and a pen can add to ones life. So many more benefits to writing something down physically rather than the ingestion of digital media - your memory of tasks become more "stuck" in your head, having taken the time to write them down and see it being written.

Been starting to carry a pocket book since a few months ago. It's always a good tool to write on while I'm at work. I work in retail selling computer accessories, so I have to know about ALL the things to sell. Reading online reviews and listening to how my coworkers sell a product are not enough. That's where the pocket book comes in. Besides jotting down notes of products, I usually would write my thoughts for the day, small fanfics, and even doodles.

I actually started using the watercolor ones first, and I needed a thin liner for my sketches because they were so tiny so I started using 0.05 liners in it and now I basically use those to write with too. I'm not really sure about the smudging because I'm right handed so it's never been an issue, but I find that thinness to be the perfect size for these note books.

I've been looking for a "system" to take notes, make checklists, jot down thoughts in the moment, and keep a record of things I would like to remember. The Bullet Journal - at least in it's pure minimalist state - is about as close to a systematic approach that might meet my needs. The downside of the Bullet Journal is that it is indeed a system by which everything has its neat little place. As you have discovered, sometimes you just want to jot down the thought quickly and have it available for when you want to remember or apply it. Get the thought down, then file it somewhere later. The A6 notebook is perfect for this. I appreciate how you explained everything and commend you for your desire to be intentional. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I can confirm from my own experience that my colleague and I (we are both active academics and engaged in a variety of activities) independently use this exact notebook. I own several of them, it's the best (also bit more expensive) notebook I've ever used, and I can't get enough of it. I use it primarily as a to do list, on one side I write my memos on each line (and cross off completed tasks and then whole pages), then on the other side I write my notes. I also use Apple notes but I always rewrite or consult a paper journal several times a day. It's by far the best system I've come up with in decades of study and practice.

Technology is super useful, and what people don't understand is that notebooks count as technology. Of course not by themselves, but technology is just the application of knowledge and in this case: committing your thoughts to memory to remind yourself later, opinions you may have that you want to elaborate on that you simply just can't remember or type, or just pure efficiency. There's no extra features with a notebook; you make the features in it.

I’ve been doing this exactly a year now, started at 2nd jan 2023, now 2024, although I carry it with me everywhere in my jacket in chest pocket, I do not write in it daily, I use it when I need to „deload” my brain out of thoughts and ideas, for me it’s starts when I can’t fall asleep at night and I stay wide awake for hours and hours, that’s my trigger to pick that notebook and write down everything for next few days, what I think, feel, any ideas, fears etc.. great stuff

Great video, enjoyed it much. I've been journaling in a little Moleskine pocket journal just like yours for the last 15 years, I've got 23 of them now filled with notes, thoughts, introspections, just about everything. I agree with everything you said. Journaling let's me organize my thoughts and I see things clearer, and it let's me access my intuition better. I started with a small Cross Century ballpoint for years, but now I use fountain pens, with fast dry ink. Love the tactile feel. Check out the Kaweco Sport fountain pens with a mini ink converter and extra fine nib so ink dries fast and does not bleed through the paper. They are so small and compact. It's cool seeing my journal filled with many different vibrant colours. All the best!

I am extremely glad that UA-cam recommended me your video. I have been using a bullet journal for jotting down my thoughts, and I used reminders in my phone for tasks and to-dos.
I had a similar experience like the one you described, every time I pull out my phone to check off the reminder, my thumb automatically slid to the Instagram icon. It was like a muscle memory; I touch my phone, boom, Instagram! I did notice that I was waddling away my time, but when I did notice I was way too much into it. It was difficult to switch my brain immediately to do the tasks I was supposed to have finished an hour or 30-minutes before. I tried using bullet journals for writing my tasks, but I would only use that at the end of the day to check off everything, and reflect on the thoughts, which was still useful, however, it did not help me at the moment to check off or just look at things immediately and move on to the next one. The idea of a pocket notebook to quickly check things off and jot down thoughts right at the moment is brilliant! I'm convinced it's the solution I've been missing.
Your insights also hit home when you talked about writing a commentary or journaling any daily observations in the pocket notebook. I do journal about any particular incident that I observed and jot down my thoughts about it, but most of the times, I just could not replicate the exact feeling that I felt at that moment. The emotion was missing. I appreciate the introspection that I get when I journal at the end of the day, but I also would like to look back at the spontaneity of my emotions and the extent of it at the moment. I am hoping that having a handy notebook might also solve this issue.
I very much appreciate your clarity on the things that you shared. Your clarity has added in me as a viewer an extra confidence to do things differently, and welcome change, and accept change. I am a bit wary when it comes to changing things suddenly, and then returning to the old ways half-way down the lane. Seeing a young mind like yours with confidence, clarity, and intentionality, has also inspired me to embrace change and act with intention. Thank you for your thoughts, and I wish nothing but best for you going forward. ( I am 23, and I only started figuring out all about intentionality and presence of now, I am glad that you have started early.)
Oh yup! I am a new subscriber from today! Looking forward to your future contents. Best wishes, Joshua.

Man, Just like a month an a half ago, I met this young guy that had a notebook very similar to yours, I asked why he was doing that, I mean going analog and writing and he gave his version that I really liked it, day after I took a notebook and I started to do my agenda only hand writting and the benefits are terrific, easier to put down everything without distrations, all that you said applies, so this other guy saw me doing that at work and he said really liked it, then he started doing the same, ahahahhahaha, it is an amazing to motivate people.
In my case I love the fact that I can go back and check my previous task to do and write another page, and extend the topic, add new things thoughs to previous planned activities, I think it is very good to stay away from screens as much as you can.
BTW there are some notebooks called "bullet planner", they are freaking good to use too, research a bit, you will love it.
And congrats for putting out there a vid with analog content.

A couple pens I like are Uniball Jetstream R and Zebra Pen Fine Point F-402. Oh and also, good old Bic 4 color pro ballpoint.
