Easily one of the most moving performances of the Grammys. Joni Mitchell is such a treasure to music and to see her still here with us is such an honour and blessing to our world.
Amen
True . . . Amen
YES!!!!!!!!!
Truer words from Joni have never been spoken
Hell of a song
Yes . . . An Unforget-able Moment .
I’m going through a big transition in life right now, and this performance just hits right
When I was a kid the song was wildly popular. My mom and I sang it together each time it was on the radio. Last week, at age 63, I visited my 84 yr old Mom for the last time. She was dying from cancer that had only been diagnosed four months prior. We never expected to lose her so quickly but I had to get home quickly. The entire flight I was worried sick about what to say to her. What would be right? How to say goodbye? She was heavily medicated when I arrived. She never spoke and never opened her eyes. I knew what felt right. It came to me so clearly. I kneeled by her bed, cradled her head and sang “Both Sides Now” while forcing back tears. She was gone 2 days later. I never saw her conscious again. I’ll never know if she heard me. The song was always special to me, always our song. I’ll never hear it without crying again. RIP Mom. Thank you, Ms Mitchell
❤
I’m sorry for your loss ❤ may her memory be a blessing
Something brought me to this video, and to your comment.... SHE HEARD YOU ♡
I'm bawling 😢. Life is so bittersweet.
SHE HEARD YOU! I live in buffalo n.y. my mom and brother inlaw died 2 years ago. A couple nights ago on the anniversary of my moms death my sisters ring security camera in her living room activated. An incredible orb came directly out of his picture and passed in front of her couch then disappeared into the ceiling. We showed the video to friends and family and they noticed a ghost sitting on the couch. My dead mom❤❤❤❤ we didn't see it but others found it, thier here my friend😊
"Something's lost, but something's gained, in living everyday." I think this might be the most beautifully profound lyric ever written. And even more so delivered in her 80s after everything she's been through. What an incredible artist.
the way she shook her head when singing ‘in living everyday’. 😢
I agree…and I have always loved the poetic lyric from “Circle of Life” describing our spectacular planet: “and the sun rolling high in the sapphire sky!” W.O.W.
Pretty much the whole song is more profound now that she’s older and with everything she’s been through.
...the dizzy dancing way I feel.....
This is, without hyperbole, probably one of the best songs ever written in the 20th century. You can tell because there have been so many different singers, interpretations, and arrangements made of it, each highlighting a different facet of the melody and lyrics. It truly feels like a diamond that you can turn and appreciate how it bends light differently at each angle. As for this specific version, with Joni herself singing lyrics she wrote almost six decades ago, it embodies the spirit of the song in a way I didn't even think possible. Pure magic.
Can you give me some good covers of it? Who?
There are so many amazing versions of this song and each artist gives it something different. I would love encourage you to listen to the versions by Layla Hathaway (you can’t not cry) and Jackie Evancho. I would love to have heard Olivia Newton-John or Karen Carpenter sing it.
I agree.
DE ACUERDO!
Dear Grammys social media manager(s), please never take this video down. I’ve been waiting since the day it aired for this to be posted here. This was an incredibly moving performance and possibly the best version of this song ever. The lyrics are such that they take on greater meaning as one gets older and experiences more in life - the evolution of Joni’s renditions reflect that.
Original > 2000 reimagining > 2022 folk festival > 2024 Grammys. Each version has been better than the prior one and I don’t think I’m alone in that opinion
Look up "bbc both sides now" and watch her then. You'll have to add it to your list...
@@auser591 I consider that the original version of the song, but that was a great live rendition of it. Thanks for sharing
Agree ❤
Agree❤
It seems like the message of the song actually works better as a slowed-down piano ballad (the way it was performed here and at the Newport Folk Festival) as opposed to the upbeat folksy guitar track it was originally.
But at the same time both versions worked at the time they were performed. The upbeat original version reflects the ambition and optimism of youth (when she released it in her early 20s), and the current version reflects the wisdom of age (from the point of view of an 80-year old woman).
Truly looking at it from both sides now.
I love it when we get performances from artists before the 21st century. Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman still have that twinkle in their eyes for music
Sitting here at 68 crying, because I feel every word of this song. I have sung it 1000 times! But this, THIS is the most beautiful version ❤
💚💚💚
Totally agree, I cried too! Every word resonated so deeply! Absolutely beautiful performance!❤️💕❤️
Same, also 68
64 here! Ugly Crying!
Well said... I must have watched this at least 25 times and every time.
I am in tears, And in awe
Of this beautiful queen of music... At 70 years old, it really resonates with me. More than it ever has in my youth... Bless Joni for sharing her soul with us...
The most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. It ages like wine - just like Joni Mitchell. So emotional, sensual, sad yet hopeful. The more experience in life, the better understanding what this song it all about..
Beautifully said.... ❤❤❤❤
❤
@@user-ok5ez1ls1kI mean really, no matter how old and experienced one gets, who DOES know about life? There’s always more to learn.
It’s taken me 50 years to hear and feel this song…in tears. Yes!
Ah Joni... what can I say... I am only 22 years old, and your music has touched me in a way no other modern music could. The two versions of "Both Sides Now" helped me get through so many hardships and breakups. You feel just like my best friend. This performance of the song made me think of the time when I was desperately trying to make things better for myself, and I am still trying. Your music will never die. You are the truest living legend of music and honest lyricism. I'll love you forever
You are a beautiful soul, and all will be beautiful, you’ll see. There’s love of others, and then there is loving yourself. If you love yourself first, you will always have true love in your life. ❤
Not much words. Just beautiful. Always loved the older version but love this one as well❤❤❤
Goodness gracious. That NOW deep vibrato! What is there in this performance to NOT cry over? Tears of joy. Tears of remembrance. Tears over the swift passage of time, and contemplation of innocent youth. Joni is TRULY a treasure.
she wrote this in her youth to perform now...she played it forward, never, ever has a song had more meaning song by it's creator 60 years or so later then this one....this performance defies words, she has changed it, little nuances...absolutely brilliant....music at it's best....
Rarely do you see a performance where every musician in a crowd and on stage are holding space in reverence. This year we got not one but two of these performances between this and Fast Car. Stunning. Shout out Brandi, Sista Strings, Lucius, Blake, Jacob, and Allison for such delicate accompaniment and respect.
The best performance in Grammys history ever
This is one of if not the most profound grammy performances ever. Joni is simply telling a life's story here and the crowd just simply jumped on their feet as soon as she finished her last note. A heartfelt performance and everyone in the audience knows it.
This was the highlight of the night. We were six 21-22 year olds in a room and all of us were immediately captured by this song like a tight hug that gave us chills and taken into some fairytale memories of our individual lives.
I love reading this.
Jacob Collier on piano is the unsung hero from this performance. Just wow.
WAIT IT WAS HIM?!!! omg no wonder the piano was incredible.
It makes sense to get a pianist who can keep up with Joni's freeform
THE PIANO ARRANGEMENT EAT!
You couldn’t ask for anyone better to be on the piano accompaniment for that performance. You could literally feel Jacob find his way through that beautiful arrangement that added so much to the overall performance.
The piano accompaniment was sublime and created a perfect atmospohere for Joni to sing with.
Give Jacob Collier a listen; he’s brilliant.
Sublime is the perfect word. I was struggling to find it. An evocative and emotive song indeed.
especially the way Jacob finished this performance at 5:28. Grand.
In a 1980s high-school English class, our teacher played a version of this song, sung by an old woman. Joni Mitchell lived in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Cree First Nation's words for the Service Berry and Swiftly Flowing) 2 hours from our school. Our class of teens laughed at hearing an unknown senior woman sing this song at a much slower pace than the original. Our teacher tried to impress upon us that hopefully we will get old and look at our life's journey, and our perspective will change. And years later, Joni Mitchell is possibly performing her song in public for the last time. She's wrote and recorded many others. She'll be known for this classic for years to come. We need to look at our lives all the way through, and we'll marvel at our changing perspectives as we get older. God Bless.
That is one of the most moving performances that I have ever seen.
So moving! Love seeing a living legend perform! Thank you, Brandi Carlile for helping Joni go back to public performances after her aneurysm.
Yes 🖤
You know, I've never realized before ... after that amazing performance, her little laugh at the end is EVERYTHING ...
The joy.
This comment deserves a lot more likes 👍
This performance and Fast Car were the highlights of the grammys.
Joni Mitchell didn't just write music, she totally embodied her music. It's poetic to see her doing so in the twilight of her years.
Joni Mitchell has to be one of the coolest humans to live
Joni, you're beyond words. A poet, a muse on earth. What a fucking performance.
I have to admit I cried during this performance.
It's a blessing that Joni Mitchell is STILL here! What an INSPIRATION!🙏🏾 ❤
As you should,
as we all should when we behold art in it's greatest truest purest form
Me also❤️her so.
me too .. what an incredible human being she is. Time will never age her songs ❤
Brother, I cried rivers when I saw this at the grammys, then I came to revisit it and I cried oceans 😅 The most moving performance I've ever seen
Absolument touchant. Une belle leçon de vie comptée avec tant de douceur. Merci Madame Joni
Nobody else was needed except Joni and the brilliant Jacob Collier almost "singing " with her on the piano - so beautiful and totally elevated what is already perfection
Jacob reining it in to help provide a beautiful backdrop for one of our finest singer songwriters to communicate to us all. Thanks Joni, Jacob, Brand and all the other wonderful musicians who made this happen.
Not reining it in. He’s accompanying- and brilliantly.
@@schrire39 I agree, and wasn’t being critical.
Stunning. I'm just sitting here sobbing. This was so gorgeous and profound.
This has to be the most moving rendition of this song ever ever. Joni Mitchell is a legend ❤❤❤
"Something's lost but something's gained in living everyday", my favourite verse in this song. So absolutely true! Wonderful performance! Thanks Joni!
I love how she uses her cane to keep rhythem. She's a wonderful classic artist. I'm still crying now just listening.
I noticed that too!!
I love that this song has grown and fits every age of Joni's life. It's so poignant and poetic, and it moves me to tears no matter which version of this song I hear. She is truly one of the most gifted songwriters ever. God bless you, Joni Mitchell.
Only to be sung again in your 80s makes this masterpiece so moving!! A hug for your 20 something year old self ❤❤❤
Yep sobbing again. To have been through everything she has, to write such poetry about life, and end with “I really don’t know life at all.” Wow. Unbelievable performance of the perfect song for the perfect moment.
Oh hell I can't stop crying. I'm right there with Meryl Streep's daughter. Thank you Ms. Joni Mitchell for all the beautiful songs and for all my incredible memories that were built off of them. You are a Queen.... ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have watched this a few times and I can not stop crying either! Its so beautiful!
@@courtneysanders310 ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗🤗
The stars align once in a while.
We are lucky to see it, or not.
Joni Mitchell live on stage was a rare celestial event.
Thanks!
Falling in love all over again with this song. This will be saved and replayed over and over when i want to feel deeply and to cry. And at my funeral. Thank Ms Mitchell ❤
The most stunning and true embodiment of a song I've ever seen. She truly has seen love from both sides now
Joni, ever the interpreter of song. She took the changes life has given her, arranged it beautifully to a song about adjusting to the passage of time, and nailed it. Glorious. When I heard this was a collaboration, I feared the high-powered women sharing the stage with her -- Brandi, Lucius, Allison Russell -- would overpower or overshadow her. But they did not. Thankfully, they kept their contributions in the background, as perfect accompaniment. So lovely, all of it.
Omg...to think she lost her ability to sing and other functions after the aneurysm. Just love her. Must protect her at all costs.
The part that makes me the most emotional is when Joni receives her standing ovation before the song ends and the camera pans to nearly every woman artist/celebrity on the floor. They have all been impacted by Joni's music at some point in their lives, (both creatively and personally), and her performance brought those waves of emotions back, but in a way that felt reborn. Everyone was on the verge of tears and all they could do was show Joni reverence and gratitude.
They're all thinking, "I'll never write a song as good as that." 😂
my world stopped for a moment, an artist and composition timeless, a lyricist becoming her lyrics before my very tear-filled eyes.....
Truly one of the greatest of all times. Singer, composer, arranger. She did it all.
This was really moving. All the other musicians gave Joni space to perform and how beautifully she performed.
Without a doubt, the most MAGNIFICENT live performance I ever saw on TV - I cannot wait for NEXT year’s Grammys and I hope she’ll be back! - But also, I wanna say how touching it was to see the excellent youthful accompanying musicians who strove and succeeded in showcasing Joni’s immense talent, her beauty. BRAVO to all! 👏
Song is almost 60 years old and it's not only passed the test of time, but it hits way harder now than back then. A 2024 masterpiece.
I cry everytime I hear this song, see her perform it. watch her magic. I hope she knows how much she and her music have touched our lives. I love her and her music so much.
background singers playing instruments and singing background?? this was beautiful
Jacob Collier on piano, not sure of others.
I saw this performance when I watched the live Grammys on February 4th, and it brought tears to my eyes. I have to say it may be the most beautiful performance I've ever heard and seen in my life.
My roommates and I (all in our 20’s) started crying when watching this 🥹 so beautiful.
I am a 21 year old and I’m gonna cry in seconds because I also have to sing it for my singing class 🥲 how am I supposed to not cry
PERFECTION.
Each time Joni sang this song, it seemed to me that the audience could discover a brand new layer of the meaning in the lyrics. The way she interpreted the song also varied with time, which might reflect her renewed and revised take on life and love, the nuances she found in living every day. What a timeless and powerful masterpiece, it might break your heart, but then it can soothe your soul, no matter how lost or heart-breaking you are. Thank you Joni for such a song of utmost wisdom and compassion.
Could there be anything more poignant and breathtaking than this legend doing her thing? I think not. Shout outs to the beautiful ladies on cello and violin, and the entire ensemble. When you are so skilled at your craft, it's almost palpable.
Talent, life and strength with complexity beyond music. Most of all, show us age just a number, taste will never go out of style! Thank you Joni!!
Amazing Joni!!! Also, well done Jacob at the piano. The way he follows, but also keeps things steady is the perfect ccompaniment and shows musical maturity.
Thats how you do it Joni!! A true legend! Beautiful ❤
As I myself get older I find I do not get wiser, just have more questions. Thank you, Joni Mitchell.
And that my friends is art. Soulfully moving whether it makes you laugh, cry or scream in anger. Beautiful.
God, what a class act. Bless you, Joni. Thanks for this.
The camera work at 3:58 pulling in and out of focus showing both Dua Lipa and Beyonce's reactions is truly masterful. Gorgeous performance. Insane we had both Mitchell and Tracy Chapman perform on the same night at the same ceremony.
I've heard this sung by her in her younger years, but I like how the slow version, both her voice and lyrics. Makes it more powerful.
A Canadian Icon. I love her more and more.
Beautiful! and shoutout to Jacob Collier on the piano!!
Its hard to know what to say, but icons watching in awe at a legend for sure and all on there feet to applaud .
dizzy dancing way you feel........the accompaniment its beautiful just lovely ...the voices are amazing
Very very moving. It shows just how short, and fragile life is.. And indeed we all are we only human after all... Beautiful and true indeed it is..we are...
Jacob Collier on the piano!
Brilliance.
Magnificent. Simply magnificent.
This is giving me "Hurt by Johnny Cash" vibes... crying like a baby 💚
Jesus, I’m speechless. I thought the Newport performance was amazing now this!
It's always nice to see a fellow Canadian prairie girl honored this way. Right on, Joni!
i want this on Spotify so bad. this feels so special
I always want to hear it sung this way. Beautiful Joni.
I love that all the musicians are all sitting with her.
The reverence exhibited by all those performers while she sang was palpable. They were witnessing greatness.
This is really realy beautiful. She is not singing, she is talking to us in an awesome way
This brought me to tears🥹🥹
Joni is a gift. Simply put, a gift.
the great art of doing magnificent things without visible effort
I can't stop sobbing.......
A treasure of a song. A treasure of a woman. Thank you Joni
I'm not crying, you're crying 😭
We're all crying. It's okay. It's what's supposed to happen when you see and hear something this beautiful and profound.
It’s love’s illusions that I recall.
So true.
Gosh I just want to run up and hug her. She is one of the greatest songwriters in history. I'm only 32 so I missed a lot of her career. But I'm just glad to be alive to see her still performing even if it's just through a screen. 💚💚 Thank you for helping us heal our hearts Joni
Absolute perfection all the way around! Young people take note. So very moving!🙏✌️
If you haven’t got tears rolling down your cheeks at the end of that you have a waxy pea sized heart. The fragility of the voice and the words sung by a voice of experience. Just beautiful xx
Exquisite in every way from the first note to the last.
So great she wrote this as a young woman and she’s singing it as if she has lived her entire life and is imparting this to the next generation. Her wisdom is ageless. She is singing it as if you say, I have lived through it all and my words still ring true
She just keeps improving with age. I didn’t think it was possible. Wow.
I miss my grandma 😢
Pure perfection! The amazing talent of the clarinetist, and strings musicians, the angelic harmonies, and the seasoned voice from an artist who has lived this song. So much more meaningful at this chapter of her life. Bravo, Joanie! ❤
Every time I listen to this song it hits different, but also the same. To me it is the song that describes life most accurately. The list of things I wish I’d done get bigger by the year, and I’m ok with that, because that’s what living every day involves.
A truly special performance.. Thanks Joni x
What a Blessing to hear Joni Mitchell singing so beautiful at 80 years old. This song brings a tear to your eyes. We should look at life this way.❤ Joni Mitchell still has a Beautiful Smile.
This was one of the things I desperately wanted to sing for mom as she passed and I couldn't when I heard this I ugly cried and sent the love to mom.
Absolutely stunning. !!!! Arguably the most beautiful song ever written in our lifetime. JM's control of the text and melody is heart wrenching. The best thing I have seen and been privileged to listen to in living memory. Wow wow wow just wow. ❤❤
She can still move emotions in people because she's always been beautiful ❤️
I’ve never heard this song until the Grammys. And wow it brought literal tears to my eyes. Such a beautiful song
Pull up her version of it when she was young, and then listen to this one again. You'll find a depth uninmaginable in how life's experiences can transform a song's meaning or impact.
