i was about to ask "why are the hamiltons depicted as pigs?" and then it hit me... HAM-ilton. Then i was gonna ask why Burr is depicted as a cat. Then i realised... Purr...
I loved this! There isn't enough Eliza love out there! I think all the character's have their own special qualities that make them lovable. But for me, Eliza takes the cake! Some take her submissive nature as a lack of character, or worse-boring! I think no such thing! Really-who could learn to stand so closely to the shining star of Alexander without losing themselves in his shadow forever? Angelica, tho intellectually his counterpart-their love would have "burned" out so quickly. I solidly agree with the statment that Eliza is a "messenger of love." Real love, which can be messy and full of contradiction-just as she brilliantly displays throughout her role in the musical becomes a mellow and quiet symphany of forgiveness and understanding-traits of unconditional love, and a determination to uphold Alexander in her mind-to the WORLD- as the man he so desperately wished to be, despite her own pain. She really turns the story into her own! Which is ALSO beautifully demonstrated by her chord progressions. Check out that video here on youtube. I love how she mirrors his quest to be an honorable man-as being just as, if not more honorable, as his wife. It's what makes her a stunning character, and inspiring woman. In her real life she seemed to go from tradgedy after tradgey of losing those she loved, which leads me to believe she primarily operated from a place of sorrow-emulated by her song Burn, it's admirable she learns to turn it into action, just as you stated.-Action btw-if you read up about the real widow Eliza-not just musical-that I would say rival's her own husband. I imagine Alexander holding her space in Heaven, smiling down with complete adoration and pride in his wife. She truly earns the title "Best of Wives and Women." Her traits are something people should take into consideration, not thrown out because she doesn't make as big a splash as the rest of the cast. She often seems to be the anchor that grounds her hotheaded husband from getting lost in the stars-even if he doesn't always listen to her, and takes her for granted. She is fully aware that you cannot force a person to value you, and she loves despite this. Honorable, empathetic, forgiving and kind. This is a woman of virtue, I just love her for it.
The deleted songs in Hamilton actually help Eliza's character a lot, but then they were deleted, so a lot of people think that Eliza's character is just flat lol
I find Eliza X Hamilton underrated tbh They're like blue and red; passive and outstanding. I wish people could see how much they actually loved each other. Whenever you say something about Eliza and Hamilton, you immediately get the ''B UT-- B U - HE PROBS DIDN'T LOVE HER AT ALL'' which I find to be ironic because they sometimes link some Tumblr post, but a lot of things on (especially) Tumblr and the internet are faked in favor of one side. I see this happen often when they try to defend Jamilton, Lams, and other gay ships. Their other argument is that ''Eliza was too weak and boring like seriously who needs help to get a date'' which isn't even an argument, it's kinda just blind hate thrown at Eliza in hopes for the other person to suddenly agree with them. Although I can agree that Laurens COULD make a good fit for Hamilton, Eliza was and is an outstanding woman that Alexander deserved. Whilest she taught their kids about love and reflection, Alexander was the big boss who showed them respect and discipline. The fact that, after Hamilton's death, she could see what he was seeing all along (slavery, corruption, etc.) and took it upon herself for her husband should be more then enough to prove you or anyone that she was a woman of great honor and kindness. I hate it that everyone seems to ignore her so much despite her being such a dramatic and critical play in the life of Alexander. She loved him, saw beyond his empty pockets, saw a legacy, forgave him after everything he had done, understood him even if it meant hurting herself, raised his 8 kids, lost one and forgave him for cheating on her AND she continued his work after his death is enough to tell you that Eliza wasn't just the generic rich girl in love but an actual sensation of kindness, understanding and undying love.
Totally agree. People usually depict her as a 3rd wheels between Jamilton or Lams, or Angelica x Alexander, even go as far as saying he only married her for money and status and never cared for her. How silly is that?
Pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats and pigs and cats
Ok I will be very honest when I first came to the Hamilton fandom. I didn't think much of Eliza, and I absolutely loved Angelica. One of the reasons being that, the first song I heard was Satisfied and then Congratulations but slowly as I learned the whole story and heard the other songs, my love and respect for Eliza grew alot. She is such a strong character, and I absolutely adore her so much because I relate to her on some level and the best part is she doesn't stop caring, she doesn't stop loving, she being a widow left with the debt of her husband and having 7 children to raise. She is such an inspiration
She had to raise 9 kids, actually. She had 8 of them, and took in an orphan. She raised her until her sister was old enough to take care of her. Then, when Alexander passed away, Eliza had to take care of a four and two-year-old.
I used to like Angelica more then my friends and I wanted to put on Hamilton and they made me Eliza so I did research and from what I can tell Angelica was flirtatious and witty, Eliza was a tomboy, and Peggy was supposedly vain.
BRO. THE SAME THING LITERALLY HAPPENED TO ME- BUT I THINK I LISTENED TO CONGRATULATIONS *THEN* SATISFIED? THEN HELPLESS SHES SO AWESOME AFTER HEARING WHO LIVES WHO DIES WHO TELLS YOUR STORY I WAS 100% SURE SHE'S MY FAVORITE
To me, her introduction in Schuyler Sisters is a bit more than you said. Obviously, it isn't a motive song like My Shot, but it does a few things for her character. The most prominent thing it does for Eliza is introduce two themes that are used for the rest of the show. The first is the way she sings her name. Through the show, this is how her name is sung most of the time, and the chord progression behind it is used in a lot of the songs. The other theme is "look around". Angelica says it the first time, but after that Eliza takes it as something she uses for most of the show. Schuyler Sisters also shows a few small hints about Eliza's personality. A lot of Eliza's lines are with Peggy, so even though you can tell she's more important than Peggy, she's okay with being more in the background. She lets Angelica shine the most even though she's just as outgoing. In Helpless she tells Angelica that she wants Alexander. This, and the fact that she has the song to herself are already a contrast to the way she acted before. This shows how much Alexander matters to Eliza. It also shows that Alexander had an impact on her from the beginning.
Hamilton at the disco and Heathers no not really peggy is very loved due to her being a meme and in her very few lines in the musicals she was perky and adorable while eliza is usually set aside for angelica due to angelicas independents and sass, eliza is kind and puts others before herself
Eliza is a queen. The fact after Angelica, Peggy, Phillip, Ham and a lot of her other friends and family died she lived 50 more years is awesome. Not to forget that during those 50 years she used her money for good by creating New York's first private orphanage. Plus she died of memory loss and the only thing she remembered was Alexander. She even forgave Alexander after cheating on her
Typical Angel Peggy did nothing of importance in American history. She's cute and everything, but having her as a bigger character wouldn't make any sense. There's also so much love for Peggy on the internet, more so than love for Eliza.
Actually, she was a badass who helped her sisters and actually married one of the most rich people in all of America IN ALL OF HISTORY. She almost died at the hand of an axe. SEE HOW COOL SHE IS?!?!?!
Dude I love Angelica, she roasted ham and she's badass, but Eliza is a goddamn saint for putting up with all that shit in her life. I'm basically Eliza.
I adore this so much, not just because Eliza is my favourite character. You've done a well-made and thorough examination of her, and I really enjoyed watching it. May you continue making awesome videos like this! 💜
Eliza's been my favorite character since day 1, because even though she went through very troubling things, such as her husband putting work over her, finding out that he had an affair, her first born getting killed and then her husband dying shortly after, she still managed to keep her remaining children clothed, fed and loved.
Burr only really shot because he doesn't want Theo to become an orphan. You hear him yell, "Wait!" when he shot the gun and Hamilton had the gun at the sky. I don't find Burr a bad character though he did want revenge.
now im realy sad that people think angelica is the spotlight ... even though she is my favorite character i always found eliza the important one i didn't know people didn't like her .... and now everyone is hating on my gurl angelica
Look I both love and hate Angelica, she was a bitch for flirting with Hamilton, in first burn (which didn’t make it to broadway unfortunately) Eliza says to Hamilton “I know about whispers I see how you look at my sister”, but I also love Angelica because she loves Eliza and it shows. So I have a mixed opinions on Angelica, but overall she’s a badass and I love her.
Because females are incapable of not making women compete. They always drag another woman down to bring another up. It’s just female nature and it’s entertaining asf to watch 😂
When Alexander and Eliza are fighting she says "helpless. . ." Which I love, it conveyed so much emotion and did something different shows can not do without ruining itself, it made Hamilton look like the villain. Even just for a moment, it feels like Hamilton has no concern for his wife and is frankly verbally and emotionally abusing her. One of the best lines, adding so much depth to eliza and is a fulfilling part of the musical.
I read a book about hamilton and after it said hamilton met eliza it said: "Hamilton later wrote, that she was everything thing he wanted in a women" If that isn't enough proof to show that he actually loved eliza I don't know what is
The first song i ever heard from Hamilton (or at least fully heard and fell absolutely in love, pun intended) was Helpless. I had no idea what the musical was even about, who these characters were, or what was ahead. But like Eliza with Hamilton, I immediately loved her character. Firsts few times listening to Helpless i could tell she was a joyous and passionate girl who was definitely looking at the positive things in life. I also noticed how she can be witty, making fun of Angelica for "wanting to form a harem" and while niave, she definetly saw the best of Hamilton. Mind you, that was what i got from just that song! I kept loving her optimism and more wit in Schuyler Sisters, her kindness in That Would Be Enough, her forgiving nature in Its Quiet Uptown, and her new matured self in Burn. She definitely owned a special place in my heart. And dont get me started on her historical counterpart. Elizabeth is a woman I now look up to. She's gone through so much, with the death if Peggy, Philip, her father, and Alexander all around the same time, she still kept her head up and fought for what she and her husband both believe in. Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton truly is, as said before many times, best of wives and best of women.
Eliza is my favourite character in Hamilton. Why? 1. I relate to her and I like her character 2. She has some of the best songs, all of which aRE IN MY VOCAL RANGE
If you had brought Schuyler Defeated into this where Eliza shuts down Hamilton from going into a duel over a family dispute so easily and kindly spoke to the man who had taken her father's job kindly asking about how his family and daughter.
Kaleigh Stone it's because of Satisfied. Satisfied and Burn are two of the most important songs in there.. and satisfied was what really grabbed the audience first.
Tina Loye Satisfied isn't that important to the storyline. Nor is it very accurate to what happened in real life. But I can see where you are coming from. Many people love Satisfied, as it is a good song. But Angelica's character to me just seems different from her real life counter-part.
Kaleigh Stone For me, I believe it's because Angelica in the story was never meant to be like her real life version. Angelica got rewritten by Lin for the purpose of satisfied. Peggy was written as incredibly irrelevant (as the actress played Maria and had a more major role) but Angelica couldn't be irrelevant because she was a prominent person in many of the politicians lives but they can't tell her story as Eliza's story was being told along side Alex. So they needed a reason why she was always around. So satisfied was created. It's pretty much a inner monologue song. But the thing about satisfied is that after that song, every time you see Angelica, you are reminded of it, of her. She doesn't blend into the background for the Audience. Even if she's just standing around, you are looking at her. You've seen inside Angelica and it's like been told a secret. And it's like watching a different show within Hamilton. The same way 'Wait for it' is captivating. The audience are the only ones who could see what was happening to Angelica and Burr. Their internal conflict was giving to us but no one else on that stage knows. No other characters had that. Not even Alex or Eliza (Burn doesn't count as it wasn't a character reveal, more like something you would expect as she was just betrayed and Alex probably knew and neither did Helpless as Angelica and Alex knew she was in love with him front the start) Satisfied might have been irrelevant to the story but it was never meant to prop the story line. It was for the audience to halt and glimpse into Angelica's mind and be captivated because her story couldn't be told like she deserved while everyone else's did... At least that my theory anyway 😊
Kaleigh Stone Until she defended her sister in the Reynolds Pamphlet, I had the impression that Angelica was quite whiney about the fact that she didn't get Hamilton. I mean, she basically offends her sister in Satisfied when saying "he will never be satisfied" to the fact that he married Eliza. Can Angelica feel that high and mighty about herself that SHE would have made him satisfied? He still would have slept with Maria regardless, I'm pretty certain! Don't take this the wrong way, I love Angelica. She's strong and quick witted. But some parts of her that are displayed in Satisfied still make me uncomfortable.
Kaleigh Stone My people!! I honestly think that even though Angelica gave up her chance with Hamilton for Eliza, she was a shitty sister (in the musical and in real life)
I love Eliza SO MUCH I wish I could travel back in time and just have a conversation with her. She was such a strong, kind, smart woman and I can’t believe she’s the fandom “underdog”, I thought everyone else was pretty much as obsessed with her as I am lol
Oh wow, you really didn't understand Angelica Schuyler. Certainly she's NOT the central female character (Eliza always was, which is why she's the one who has lines in Alexander Hamilton) BUT she's definitely so much more than a sad and bitter old lady. While Eliza represented hope, Angelica represents sacrifice and Eliza only can achieve her message of love because Angelica takes the ultimate love sacrifice: She steps aside so that her sister can be happy, the way she always knew she could have had, but would have been at the cost of Eliza. And through the end, Angélica is always by Eliza's side, ultimately abandoning her own story to move in with her sister and help her with her legacy. So, yeah. Angélica is not the most important female character, but she is definitely a HUGE character in the story because her story is central to both Alexander's and Eliza's development.
+Cindy S. Good analysis! I don't mean to make the implication that Angelica is simply a sad and bitter old lady; and I definitely agree with the point about her being a representation of sacrifice. And I certainly wasn't making the point that she wasn't important at all - in fact, I was originally planning to make a video about her instead of Eliza. On the other hand, though, I feel that Eliza and Angelica both respond to loss very differently, with Angelica taking it a bit...harder. Eliza possesses an incredibly loving and forgiving character, and as awesome and altruistic Angelica can be, forgiveness and a "grace to powerful to name" aren't exactly her thing, at least not in the show, which is why I referred to her as "bitter" - Angelica, in many ways, acts as Eliza's anger, I feel, which is definitely essential, but ultimately acts as a foil to Eliza's forgiving traits. I agree that what I said was an oversimplification of her character, no doubt, but I assure you, it doesn't stem from any disdain towards her or misconceptions as to her importance - I was merely attempting to focus on the contrast in how both characters approach loss. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😄 You made some great points.
The Analytic Well, that's the part that I feel you didn't exactly get about Angelica. Angelica is an opposite to Eliza and we see this in the way both storylines evolve. The main difference between Angelica and Eliza, however is that because Angelica is the older sister she has to fulfill all the social expectations Eliza is never going to have to worry about. So while we start with an Angelica being a strong, confident, independent and feminist woman; while Eliza is sort of there in the shadow of her sister (We know this is how she feels because she says it: "My sister made her way across to you, and I got nervous thinking what she's gonna do, she grabs you by the hand and I'm thinking I'm through..." So at the beginning of the show, Angelica IS the big sister. She gets the attention and the praise and even Eliza thinks she has no chance against her. But immediately after we have established this dynamic, we get Angelica becoming a victim of society's expectations: "I'm a girl in a world in which my only job is to marry rich..." We see how a woman as powerful as Angelica gets constricted by all this things she HAS to do, and she knows her sister will never have to endure the same life: "Maybe that is why I introduced him to Eliza..." And the Parallels between the sisters never stop from there. The next we see is Eliza begging for Alexander's attention asking for a "fraction of your time and a fraction of your mind", while at the same time we see Angelica getting that fraction of his time and mind ("You've written My dearest, Angelica"). So even though Angelica has submitted to society's expectations, found a wealthy husband and moved all the way across the sea, she stills holds to her hopes and dreams of being satisfied because she still believes there's a chance, while Eliza grows more and more frustrated with the fact that she's still in the background of her loved ones lives. But then, the Reynolds Pamphlets happen and that is the turning point for the sisters: While Angelica will finally realize she's no longer free of her duty, Eliza rises as her own new power force, finally free of her dependence and finally taking a stand of her own. She erases herself from the narrative. So even though she stills fulfils her duty as a wife, she doesn't conform to what everyone is expecting and she decides NO ONE gets to know about her heartbreak. What we see next is how Angelica now takes the place Eliza had, now she's in the background, finally defeated by the circumstances she never had a choice to begin with, while Eliza is given a chance to change the narrative because of her sister's sacrifice. Perhaps because the song that tells this story was left out of the Broadway show is that we don't get this in the album, but if you listen to 'Congratulations' we have the last goodbye of Angelica Schuyler as she makes the ultimate sacrifice and forces Hamilton to do the same: "I love my sister more than anything in this life, I would choose her happiness over mine every time. Don't lose sight that you've been blessed with the best wife." Yes, the "Best of wives" line is a direct reference to this song, because it is Angelica the one that opens Alexander's eyes to the fact that Eliza is the most important person in both of their lives from now on and everything they'll do is for her. And because of this sacrifice we get to see Eliza's chance to thrive. Now Angelica is erasing herself from the narrative (She's now in the background and will remain there for the rest of the show) in order to Eliza to have her best chance. And at the end it is evident that that we are back at the beginning, but now it's Eliza Schuyler the one who's the string, independent and powerful woman, but because she became this through love, love is what she owns. So I wouldn't say in that way that Angelica or Eliza are better or worse, maybe they're equally important in the story, but in a show about parallels, we get this other pairing, the same way Hamilton/Burr will occur.
I feel like when Alexander used Eliza's lyrics against her, he used them mockingly or speaking down to her, like degrading her for seeing theworld in a different manor than he did.
Thank you for making this video, I enjoyed very much but you forgot some things Eliza is probably more strong than people would describe Angelica, she had to see her sister (margreta aka Peggy) die in 1801 and also had her first son, Phillip, die too and in that same year Phillip died, her oldest daughter, Angelica, died too. She had to see Alexander die and later on her mother and father after that her sister, Angelica. Only 2 of her 8 children outlived her. So I would say that after she had gone through all of that she is very very strong of a woman (not physically...well maybe idk) and deserves the title Best of Wives and Best Of Woman like you said.
I absolutely adore Eliza. She was always there for Hamilton, she was always so strong. I'm still amazed at how a person could cheat on someone who always cared, who always provided a comforting shoulder when times got rough. After hamilton, her son! died instead of breaking she lived and done so many things for people, retained her husband's legacy (and so many others) which was obviously all he ever cared for. Shit hamilton won in so many ways. I hope he appriciated his wife and all the good that she stood for while he was still alive and right before his death. Truly an amazing woman.
Thanks for making this video. I too think Eliza doesn’t get the credit she deserves. In school I was asked to write a report about my favorite historical figure and I wrote about Eliza. My teacher herself said it was great and that she learned so much stuff she didn’t know before. Eliza was an incredible woman, she did so many amazing things, and she is one of my role models, when I grow up I hope to be at least an eighth of the woman she was! ❤️
Tbh, I was always so surprised that there was more love for Angelica than that of Eliza. I honestly don't agree that Angelica was more interesting, at least she wasn't in the interpretation of the musical. I mean, Satisfied and Congratulations were absolutely wonderful. But tbh, compared to Eliza? You jokin, fam? True that Eliza was more chill in act 1. But the latter half of act 2 was Eliza's strongest points, and it was the strongest of all the sisters. That includes her burning Hamilton's letters, staying strong even after out-living practically all the main characters in the musical, and her life-long mission as the protector of her husband's legacy. It easily made her the most emotionally empowering Schuyler sister to me. How can it not be after that iconic gasp at the end of every show?
Personally based off of the way they were portrayed in the musical, Angelica was made out to be a much more appealing character than Eliza. However, historically Eliza was much more important and to this day doesn't get enough credit for the things she did for America.
That's was an amazing video Mr. Analytic, and what you said about Eliza's overall power in the musical actually really hit home to Eliza's role as the one who tells your story. With that role, I believe it is what gives her the ultimate power in the musical, as how you are remembered throughout history is one of, if not the central idea of Hamilton, and Alexander's main goal for his life.
why hamilton (like the musicals title) doesn’t have alexander’s name in front is because it’s not only about alexander. it’s also about eliza, about philip. it’s about the hamilton’s not only alexander.
You know, some historians think that the affair was faked by James Reynolds and Alexander because they were trying to hide financial fraud. A great book that goes deeper into her is “Eliza Hamilton” which is a biography of her.
I stan Eliza. She's my role model and my favourite character as well. I'm nuts for people who don't need to be "hardcore" or "badass" to be strong. Who turn kindness and love into a power. She was a sidekick most of the time, and sadly the rest of the characters (MOSTLY ALEX), as well as the fandom, underestimated her. Eliza wasn't as confident, popular or educated as Angelica or Alexander. But often the humble, helpful people who stand on the sidelines are actually the most important, though others hardly notice them unless they're gone. I love that Angelica recognized Eliza's qualities, valued and loved her and was always ready to protect her. Also the moment in "It's quiet uptown" when Alexander sang a reprise of Eliza's lines in "That would be enough". That's the moment when he realized his mistakes and learned to love and appreciate his wife - something she did for him since the very beginning. He was finally ready to let go of his pride and ambition - "just let me stay here at your side, that would be enough". This is the man who was never satisfied, always striving for more. Eliza is the best character and though Lams is quite cool and almost certainly happened (read their letters) in the end I just want good things for my homegirl. (I'm not sure if Alex is a good thing cuz motherfucker cheated on her, but they were able to make up so🤷♀️)
I've always loved Eliza in the show. She has so much love in her heart. And that last song where she describes how she created things and brought up children who she saw Alexander in makes me cry. Shows how much strength she had.
Great video and I support Eliza love 110%, but I think you missed out on a lot by not mentioning narrative (especially since Eliza has one of the most important lyrical arcs of the show in 'let me be a part of the narrative/ I'm erasing myself from the narrative/ I put myself back in the narrative').There's also the fact that she seems like a background character until you realise that she provides huge amounts of strength and influence from behind the scenes. This starts even with her opening the song 'Stay Alive', supporting Hamilton from afar. It's obvious in 'That Would Be Enough'. In Yorktown we watched Hamilton accept and even become eager for the prospect of his own death ('This is where it gets me') until he realises 'then I remember my Eliza's expecting me- not only that, my Eliza's expecting! We gotta go, gotta get the job done, gotta start a new nation gotta meet my son!' Her presence in his life keeps him alive. Then Act 2. Hamilton is not the best of husbands. (Shock horror.) Eliza raises his (numerous) children while controlling their finances and running the household, still trying to take care of her stubborn over-worked husband but also support him as we see in Take A Break. There's two songs which were removed from the musical that I think truly show Eliza's inherent goodness, strength of character and important influence on Hamilton. They revolve around the whole Burr-taking-the-Schuyler-seat thing. She is forgiving and kind, shows her patience, quick intelligence and composure as she saves Hamilton from making a fool of himself and then calms him (with a bit of steel in her voice). She asks after the Theodosias, showing again her caring and thoughtful nature. And she tells Hamilton 'when someone tries to lay you low, let it go,' which is a very important lesson that Hamilton never really learns. Then Burn comes. Eliza's strength and goodness shines through even here, in one of the worst moments of her life, showing that it goes all the way down to her core. She does not allow the cruelty, pettiness and drama around her to warp or change who she inherently is. Like you noted, her incredible power to forgive is another testament to why she is quite literally the best character in the show. When Hamilton, in his final moments prepares to die, he holds onto the words which have always steered and propelled him singing 'rise up, rise up, rise up' and then 'Eliza!' because for the first time he realises that they are the same thing. He has finally understood what a legacy is. 'It's planting seeds in a garden that you never get to see.' And Eliza does this the whole play; she does this her whole life. And she never asks for recognition or anything in return. She takes betrayal, and grief, and horror, and builds kindness and giving. She starts a school and an orphanage. She looks after her own young girls. She takes her grief and uses it, helping the write her husband's legacy and that of those around him while battling severe debt (thanks, Hammie), raising seven children, grieving her husband, son, brother and father who all died close together, and never once letting tragedy make her broken. She takes the tragedy and uses it to make the world a better place. She takes tragedy and takes the reins, stepping forward into the void Burr has left and becoming the narrator because /she refuses to let the story end there./Hamilton's last words to her really were 'best of wives and best of women'. In the letter he wrote before the duel in chase of his death, he finished, 'adieu best of wives and best of women. Embrace all our children for me.'Eliza the character is kindness. Eliza the person was strength.
I really hope you continue making videos, I know you don't have a lot of subscribers as of now but I see great potential in the style of your videos and your deep analysis truly intrigue me I hope you continue with the hard work I'm rooting for you
To me Eliza is very important to me because she thought about other people and their needs. She is very kind and grateful for her family and Alexander, She also spoke the truth when she felt it was the eight time.
I like how you had the representation of Eliza, I agree, she is such an amazing and underrated character. However, I think Angelica gets the spotlight more because she's overall a more entertaining character, not necessarily because she's a better character, or because she made more 'sacrifices', but because she is more outspoken. Angelica is an Eliza that is less forgiving, less caring, and more bitter, while Eliza carries the same love and kindness, but happens to get the short end of the stick when it comes to charisma. It may also be because Eliza may be just a less relatable character, which is sad, because it means that many people can't relate to a kind and empathetic person. However, Eliza hardly makes any mistakes, and she learns from when she might have made a bad choice, but helps people around her. Eliza also is a less likable character because of how likable she is. She reminds me a lot of what I could be, if I were nicer, or kinder, or tried harder, and instead of focusing on how amazing Eliza is, I'm looking at her with jealousy, or hatred, because she's a reminder of how I could be a better person.
I know Peggy is amazing an everything but she wasn't in the show for very long so I didn't get to appreciate her very much. And I absolutely LOVE Eliza because aw stood by Hamiliton through everything. Her son dying, her husband cheating, forgiving him, and then he dies. She has gone through so much in her lifetime but she still picks her head up every day and shows kindness and love to everyone around her.
Tbh, Helpless Is the first song I ever heard form Hamilton. The second one was Satisfied and Even tho I like Satiated better, I love Eliza more. She's the woman I want to become. She's strong, but not "I HAVE TO SAVE THE WORLD" strong like today's heroines. I love some of that too, but she's pretty nice different heroine...
Peggy isn’t underrated. It seriously seems like she gets more appreciation than Eliza.

She truly earns the title "Best of Wives and Women."
Her traits are something people should take into consideration, not thrown out because she doesn't make as big a splash as the rest of the cast.
Eliza is truly a stunning woman and deserves much more appreciation than she gets
Eliza Schuyler Wow thanks sis
corie rae So true, agreed
The deleted songs in Hamilton actually help Eliza's character a lot, but then they were deleted, so a lot of people think that Eliza's character is just flat lol
Eliza Schuyler You mean the deleted song let it go? Yeah that one was good
I find Eliza X Hamilton underrated tbh
They're like blue and red; passive and outstanding.
Bless you for this!
Bless you, because finally someone agrees with me!
Also, I was lucky enough to watch the show, I realized they had matching outfit colors until the last song.
Totally agree. People usually depict her as a 3rd wheels between Jamilton or Lams, or Angelica x Alexander, even go as far as saying he only married her for money and status and never cared for her. How silly is that?
Very silly. It's so childish how people feel the need to make false accusations and arguments, sometimes on the behalf of Alexander.
I know I’m a little late to the party, BUT
Does it work like this?
Hamilton ->Ham-> Pigs
Burr-> Purr -> Cat? :3

Yep.
Merricup Lover oh my god same
She had to raise 9 kids, actually. She had 8 of them, and took in an orphan. She raised her until her sister was old enough to take care of her. Then, when Alexander passed away, Eliza had to take care of a four and two-year-old.
Same here, Angelica still is my favorite but I appreciate Eliza much more now
I used to like Angelica more then my friends and I wanted to put on Hamilton and they made me Eliza so I did research and from what I can tell Angelica was flirtatious and witty, Eliza was a tomboy, and Peggy was supposedly vain.

It also shows that Alexander had an impact on her from the beginning.

mermaid nora in the musical. Not in the fan base/fandom.
I had a toad and named it Peggy. It jumped off a bridge and died.

Typical Angel Peggy died the first act I think

Eliza's been my favorite character since day 1, because even though she went through very troubling things, such as her husband putting work over her, finding out that he had an affair, her first born getting killed and then her husband dying shortly after, she still managed to keep her remaining children clothed, fed and loved.
Burr only really shot because he doesn't want Theo to become an orphan. You hear him yell, "Wait!" when he shot the gun and Hamilton had the gun at the sky. I don't find Burr a bad character though he did want revenge.
Don't misunderstand, I adore Burr, and I could even be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Theodosia was more than grown by the time of the duel
I loved this video! I am so sick and tired of people always saying Angelica is better than Eliza.
ELIZA IS MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like if u agree
I'm new here and I like how you talked about Eliza being the best of wives and best of woman and I also like this cause I love Eliza 💙💙💙
pandy draws Aww thank you
now im realy sad that people think angelica is the spotlight ... even though she is my favorite character i always found eliza the important one i didn't know people didn't like her .... and now everyone is hating on my gurl angelica
Ahhh this is so true
One of the best lines, adding so much depth to eliza and is a fulfilling part of the musical.
you analysed that so beautifully
The absolutely fabulous Thomas Jefferson XD it killed me.
I read a book about hamilton and after it said hamilton met eliza it said: "Hamilton later wrote, that she was everything thing he wanted in a women"
If that isn't enough proof to show that he actually loved eliza I don't know what is
Phillip Schuyler: man, I love my 3 daughters. Angelica, Eliza, and **looks at smudged writing on hand** and eggy
Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton truly is, as said before many times, best of wives and best of women.
i love Angelia and Eliza equally as much they are both so great I can't choose one over the other and I won't.
dancingsun2 SAME
What about Peggy?
Eliza is my favourite character in Hamilton. Why?
1. I relate to her and I like her character
Personally, I find Angelica overrated. Don't kill me ;-;
Kaleigh Stone it's because of Satisfied.
Not even Alex or Eliza (Burn doesn't count as it wasn't a character reveal, more like something you would expect as she was just betrayed and Alex probably knew and neither did Helpless as Angelica and Alex knew she was in love with him front the start)
Satisfied might have been irrelevant to the story but it was never meant to prop the story line.
Absolutely Fabulous💕 Thomas Jefferson~
HOW DOES HE ONLY HAVE 364 SUBSCRIBERS!?!?!
Eliza lived until 97, only 2 of her children remained after her. I can't imagine all the deaths she had to endure.
Finally, someone talks about Eliza, she has been my favourite character ever since I first heard the songs from the musical!
So while we start with an Angelica being a strong, confident, independent and feminist woman; while Eliza is sort of there in the shadow of her sister (We know this is how she feels because she says it: "My sister made her way across to you, and I got nervous thinking what she's gonna do, she grabs you by the hand and I'm thinking I'm through..."
So at the beginning of the show, Angelica IS the big sister. She gets the attention and the praise and even Eliza thinks she has no chance against her.
But immediately after we have established this dynamic, we get Angelica becoming a victim of society's expectations: "I'm a girl in a world in which my only job is to marry rich..."
We see how a woman as powerful as Angelica gets constricted by all this things she HAS to do, and she knows her sister will never have to endure the same life: "Maybe that is why I introduced him to Eliza..."
And the Parallels between the sisters never stop from there.
Those are all fantastic points! I'm not trying to say Angelica is worse, but you're right, I've overlooked some things. Thanks for commenting!
Cindy S. WHAT ABOUT PEGGY
Alyssa McKnight
No one cares about her
I feel like when Alexander used Eliza's lyrics against her, he used them mockingly or speaking down to her, like degrading her for seeing theworld in a different manor than he did.
Thank you for making this video, I enjoyed very much but you forgot some things
Eliza is probably more strong than people would describe Angelica, she had to see her sister (margreta aka Peggy) die in 1801 and also had her first son, Phillip, die too and in that same year Phillip died, her oldest daughter, Angelica, died too.
I'm laughing so hard, pigs?
Dark Shadow Storm lol
Me when they say Angelica is better: sHUT UP, I MEAN, I LOVE ANGELICA, BUT ELIZA IS JUST AS AMAZING AS ANGELICA AND PEGGY *unholy screeching*
You know too much.
in saving alexander's legacy, eliza actually said, "justice shall be done to the memory of my hamilton." and my heart was just gone

"Angelica is better"
Me: **gets suitcase** OKAY WE'RE TAKING THIS TO COURT
With that role, I believe it is what gives her the ultimate power in the musical, as how you are remembered throughout history is one of, if not the central idea of Hamilton, and Alexander's main goal for his life.
why hamilton (like the musicals title) doesn’t have alexander’s name in front is because it’s not only about alexander. it’s also about eliza, about philip. it’s about the hamilton’s not only alexander.
i love eliza so much when everyone was saying sorry about her husbands passing she scolded them i love her!
You know, some historians think that the affair was faked by James Reynolds and Alexander because they were trying to hide financial fraud. A great book that goes deeper into her is “Eliza Hamilton” which is a biography of her.
Cope
Yeees! Thank you! Eliza is so underrated she’s my favorite character I wish more people appreciated her
I fucking love Eliza she's my favorite
(I'm not sure if Alex is a good thing cuz motherfucker cheated on her, but they were able to make up so🤷♀️)
I just realized that Eliza is exactly like every middle child in this century everyone always talks about Angelica or Peggy and never talk about Eliza
YAY! Eliza appreciation day should be on August 9th!!!
I love Eliza! She is an amazing and kind women!
Eliza has always been my favorite.

I've always loved Eliza in the show. She has so much love in her heart. And that last song where she describes how she created things and brought up children who she saw Alexander in makes me cry. Shows how much strength she had.

Why did I say this 2 years ago lol. Eliza is baby but I also like Angelica and Alexander
Eliza Hamilton I love you
Great video and I support Eliza love 110%, but I think you missed out on a lot by not mentioning narrative (especially since Eliza has one of the most important lyrical arcs of the show in 'let me be a part of the narrative/ I'm erasing myself from the narrative/ I put myself back in the narrative').There's also the fact that she seems like a background character until you realise that she provides huge amounts of strength and influence from behind the scenes.
Angela Schuyler Church is my favorite Schuyler Sister. But Eliza Schuyler Hamilton is my favorite Hamilton character.
I really hope you continue making videos, I know you don't have a lot of subscribers as of now but I see great potential in the style of your videos and your deep analysis truly intrigue me I hope you continue with the hard work I'm rooting for you
+cditty3 Thank you! Continuing is really the plan, the next video is really close to being finished, I promise. Thank you for your support.
In the beginning: look ShUt Up, KIDS. let’s talk about Elizabeth now.
To me Eliza is very important to me because she thought about other people and their needs. She is very kind and grateful for her family and Alexander, She also spoke the truth when she felt it was the eight time.
Those who actually went "Ughhh" deserves a boyfriend/children like Charles Lee
YES GO ELIZA!!! She's my favorite character!
Peggy actually isn't the underdog. She was respected while she was alive.
She is now our "savior"
I just saw a comment saying that :/
@@perryisthehat does it bother you that much?
@@askeladd6115 it’s been 4 years so no lol
0:59 She is kinda the underdog of the fan base
*Peggy violently breaks down the door*
*AND PEGGY*
That's weird! I see more Eliza in my perspective.
Kids: *ELIZA SUCKS!*
Me: **gets chainsaw**
Me: say that again.... And you will *PAY*
How do people not love Eliza?! Eliza is my all time favorite character!!! Also, why not mention Phillipa Soo?! She is as amazing as Eliza!!!!!!!!!!
The pigs were the best thing ever.
Edit: the animals were the best ok?
"It's allways a little more fun to root for the underdog"
Peggy: *cries*
But I love Eliza she is cute and adorable
Edit:and related

R.I.P. Margarita Schylur.
🍸 sorry pegs bout that
FINALLY! Eliza has to be my favorite character in the musical BECAUSE OF EVERYTHING YOU SAID BUT EVERYONE ALWAYS ARGUES FOR SOMEONE ELSE!
underdog? dont u mean peggy
PotatoGamer86 YESSS
Peggy's overrated af.
PotatoGamer86 Peggy is worshipped by the fandom lol plus she died in the first act
Peggy is overrated. xD
Yeah Peggy is super overrated and she died in act 1
I need full on Hamilton animatics with the pigs, cat and llama. They were hilarious 😂
*and PiGgY*
You have to do a video about Peggy !!! I mean she’s literally the real main character !!! And we all know that !
what about peggy???

Are you telling me that there’s people who don’t think that Eliza is as cool (or even cooler) as Angelica?
Of course people are incapable of not comparing
