    Gotta love this golden era of UA-cam channels. For people like me That Pedal Show is a dream come true but it couldn't exist without a platform like UA-cam. Stuff like this could have never been, nor will ever be, on TV. No network would ever buy a show that is this deeply geeky and niché but for many of us it's way more interesting than anything on TV these days :D

    Now that you've had the Captain on, it would delight me to no end if you could reach out to Justin Sandercoe, the greatest of all youtube teachers, who shares your passion and enthusiasm, and have him on your show. Since he's a teacher, you could talk about how beginners or students should use pedals or something like that. It would be great. He's also got a sweet new suhr he could bring along.

    On that PlimSoul, the second gain stage is an LED clipping stage. The guitar signal passes through that exposed LED to get its second round of gain. The louder you play your guitar, the more current runs through that LED, so that's why you can only hardly see it sometimes.

    I really appreciate what Dan said about the "old-style" hand made amps. There is great value in knowing a talented fellow human spent hours using years of expertise to create the best amp, guitar, pedal, etc. so you can create the best music of which you are capable. I appreciate getting great tone cheap (don't we all), but the value I and Dan spoke of is real and as valid as the value of the sounds it makes.

    I couldn't agree more with Lee about the journey of finding your tone, and it making you play at a higher level than you would play if not inspired by your tone.
    I began playing guitar in 1985. My first guitar was a Hondo Strat copy and my first amp was a Roland DAC-10. Needless to say, my tone wasn't exactly all that inspiring, even for a 14-year-old punk who was convinced he was going to be in the best hardcore band east of the Mississippi. It wasn't until I was 20 years old that I got serious about wanting to play guitar and be inspired to play at a higher level. I literally drove around to every guitar shop in the Detroit-Metro area for an entire year until I found the guitar that nailed the tone I was looking for, as well as being a quality instrument that played like butter; it was a 1991 Gibson SG Special in TV yellow.
    Now onto my amps. After purchasing my SG, I decided on a Fender M-80 Stereo Chorus amp which sounded quite good. About 3 months later, I purchased a Digitech GSP 5 from a crackhead in front of my house, which I ran through the FX loop of my M-80. The tone I got from that setup was amazing. I eventually upgraded to a Laney Pro-Linebacker 100 Reverb half stack.
    Finding my tone led me to form a band, which later inspired me to move to San Francisco to start a band with other friends and form amazing friendships with people I'm great friend with 23 years later. The bassist from my first band went on to play with several other bands and musicians, tour, and basically change the entire trajectory of his life.
    Needless to say, I still play guitar to this day and have improved my tone even further thanks to Lee and Rob. I discovered their Anderton's videos while amp shopping about 4 years ago. I was looking for an affordable tube head, preferably an Orange. I found Rob and Lee's video "The Ultimate Orange Tiny Terror Shoot Out (Studio Quality Demo)". I decided on the Dark Terror, as I couldn't afford a TH30 head at that time. I paired the DT with an Orange PPC212 open-back cab. Well, I saved my pennies and eventually bought a TH30 head and an Orange PPC212 closed-back cab. I now run my TH30 through both my PPC212 cabs, and am in tone heaven. I have been playing at a level and with an ease that I never thought I would; with the help of a pretty nice guitar collection now too.
    So Lee is ABSOLUTELY correct when he says that finding your tone is where it's at.

    Another one of my fave episodes here. Speaking personally about why the Andertons channel and That Pedal Show is so popular, I watch it because there is so much more than just guitar talk thrown into the mix. I love the well informed but laid back interaction and indeed, the lack of hyperbole surrounding the gear. Both channels get to the nub of the subject matter in question without that feeling of a product(s) being pushed in your face. In short, the love, chemistry and the humor shine through.

  • @basdenchris
    @basdenchris 7 років тому

    I really would like to see you guys do an in-depth video on the Kemper thing. Maybe a comparison of the (oft maligned) internal effects v. some bread-and-butter stompboxes. Andertons, in the video Lee referred to at 24:09, established that the difference in core amp sound was, at most, negligible. The biggest pedal-related questions for me, then, are these:
    -Does a given profile react to pedals the same way as the profiled amp?
    -Are the internal effects good enough for most players to go "in-the-box" with their rig, at least for gigs where it's not ideal to carry a full pedalboard/amp rig?
    I know there's a ton of work that goes into your videos, and I love watching them! If a video covering such questions as I've asked above existed, I think I might just pee with excitement...

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому +1

      The difference in the core amps is definitely not negligible. I’m not sure what Lee and Rob were doing, what amps they were using and so on. But Dan and I have never heard a Kemper react or feel close to a high end amp in the room. Now, can it get close? Absolutely! Do they work brilliantly for recording and low volume situations where a loud valve amp is impractical? 100 per cent! Are they more satisfying to people who haven’t grown up playing really loud valve amps all the time? Without a shadow of a doubt. But do they sound and react like the amps they’re emulating? To me and Dan (and the vast majority of artists we come into contact with) they really, really don’t.
      Which means there still isn’t a question worth asking. For us, the moment you’re into 100 per cent AD/DA conversion something is gone whether that’s pedals or amps. Which is not to say that it’s worse.... just that we don’t like it as much as traditional amps and high quality analogue stompboxes. Yet. So, if people choose to make the switch based on the fact it’s cheaper, much more practical, keeps the sound engineer happy etc etc etc, that makes total sense. But if anyone actually thinks it sounds and feels better, then their tastes and opinions are a long way out of line with ours. Which is again not to say they’re wrong or it’s bad in any way whatsoever.... just that we don’t enjoy it and we don’t want to waste time doing stuff we don’t enjoy.
      All that said.... while digital amps are still a long way off for us, we are experimenting a bit more with attenuation and cabinet simulation. We started that journey at the end of last year - video coming soon - so that might be something we look at a bit more trough 2018.
      Were Lee and Chappers wrong? No! Are their tonal tastes and expectations very different from mine and Dan’s. It seems like it may be so! Cheers!

    I really enjoyed this - Lee has dominated the UA-cam market these last few years and clearly loves his guitars and gear. It was nice to get an insight into the market from a sales POV. I'd love for That Pedal Show to start interviewing pedal builders, From Small UK guys like Thorpy and Green Carrot, to industry legends like Jeorge Tripps etc
