- The Top 10 Star Trek episodes of ALL time as chosen by fans of the 50th Anniversary Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, USA in 2016. Choosing 10 episodes out of 726 episodes of The Original Series (TOS), The Next Generation (TNG), Deep Space Nine (DS9), Voyager (VOY) and Enterprise (ENT) could not have been easy and I’m sure many will find their favourite episodes missing. Star Trek: Discovery (DSC) has a high bar to reach.
All content from Star Trek is property of CBS and used under conditions of fair use.

Only ever watched spatterings of SG1. On my to-watch-at-some-point list!
Problem is that I only like to watch programmes in order. I missed the first season or so of SG-1 so I couldn't watch the rest! Have watched Atlantis and Universe though. Been slowly watching through the first seasons of many shows (eg 12 Monkeys, Sense8, etc) that I never go round to watching first time - will add SG-1 to the list!
@@finalfrontier I always found that the final episodes of each series were captivating (My favorite's VOY: Endgame Parts 1 & 2).
It's 'All Good Things' for me. Can't believe we'll see Picard in his vineyard once more
@@finalfrontier Great choice--Q: The trial never ended Picard... ;-)
I always cry whenever I hear Picard playing that flute from the inner light
I listened to the tune played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London - indescribable!
Jek
I didn't cry, but it is the one episode I think about when someone talks about TNG.
yes the inner light my fav. because it is about family and loss. like a message in a bottle tossed into the see. I thought of voyager 1 -2 with the record on board the first man made craft to exit the solar system
It’s such a beautiful tune
Several Voyager episodes could make this list, but the glaring error is Measure of a Man. IMHO, one of the best hours of television ever made. Even more relevant today.
I never really liked Measure of a Man. It moves kinda weirdly, although Frakes' and Spiner's acting were top notch.
Measure of a Man, Inner Light, City on the Edge, and especially The Visitor (insufferable tearjerker from begining to end) are so overrated.
But you're right about Voyager.
I think one of the best Voyager episodes is Course: Oblivion. It doesn't have a happy ending and just leaves you gut wrenched. One of the few star trek episodes to make me cry honestly.
Such a unique episode, still underrated. And it gets better on a rewatch, since you start to notice how the clones seem happier and eventually are clinging more to life than the real Voyager. Basically the theme of Blade Runner, were the replicants were desperately fighting for something real people take for granted.
I read that the cast didn’t like filming that episode because of how dark it was but they all liked the finished product.
"All Good Things", considered by many the greatest Star Trek finale, should easily have made this list, and "The Doomsday Machine", with arguably the greatest guest performance in all of Star Trek, by the great William Windom. Many think it was Emmy worthy at the time, and it was a crime he was not nominated.
I adored 'All Good Things' too
Only room for ten episodes though. A longer list would be in order.
I still prefer the DS9 finale
Can't disagree that had the feels. VOY best of is incoming...
@@finalfrontier Had all the feels while tying up all the stories while leaving the door slightly open for a follow up which is well overdue
I'm having a hard time believing this list was made by fans. Trials and Tribulations, Far beyond the Stars, Year of hell, and Best of both worlds would be on any fan favorite lists.
You would have thought so! Talking of which, DS9 Top 10 in the works...
Josh Combs - all excellent episodes. 🥰
This list was made by lots of fans at a star trek convention. It doesn't get much more hard core than that. For me, as long as Inner light is top 3, everything is good. Personally, I absolutely love the episode Tin man, but I can understand why it was probably far from making a top 10 list.
I love all those episodes, but none of them are on my Top Ten list.
People like different things.
For sure! What would you say is your top 3?
“Far Beyond the Stars,” DS9 Season 6, ep. 13. It is the greatest meta-theatrical self-deconstruction of the morals & motives of an *Entire Franchise* in one 50-minute episode. Riveting performances that explore the consequences of moral complacency, tightly-framed direction, excellent pacing, and the familiar faces tormented by self-doubt into unfamiliar characters. It aired over 20 years ago but I remember how stunned I was the first, second, and third times I watched it.
You just reminded me again of how incredible Star Trek is even after so many decades! I do wish they'd remaster DS9 in HD. But at least we'll get a little glimpse when the DS9 documentary comes out later this year
Surprised to see no Voyager episodes. One I would put up there is where the Doctor has a family on the holodeck. Real sad
It has always saddened me that Enterprise was canceled. I don't know why more people didn't watch it, because it is one of the best. I considered it, from the very first episode, a great attempt at making the futuristic settings of Star Trek connect with today's world and advances in technology and society.
Cogenitor is one of the best 10. Also "Dear Doctor". Those mirror universe episodes are straight garbage compared to those two.
Brilliant choices. These are fantastic concept episodes that truly encompass what Star Trek is all about
I'm surprised Darmok didn't make the list or the measure of a man. Both are my favorite tng episodes. Also no love for Voyager?
Darmok is a divisive episode - but I firmly side of loving it. It is pure Star Trek for me
Unfortunately Voyager had so few truly great episodes its hard to compare to the first three series. I will admit, though, that one of my favorite episodes of all Star Trek is "Living Witness".
"Darmok" was idiotic.
i 2nd this, highly overrated.
Shaka. When the walls fell :(
No 'Best of Both Worlds'?! SERIOUSLY!?
I was surprised too! Check out the TNG Top 10 vids liat
Seriously, it makes it hard to take this list seriously. Seriously.
I miss "Year of Hell" from Voyager. Yes, it was more than one episode, but that should be on the list.
Best of both worlds is scary and entertaining but its not the exploration of humanity that it could be.
YES! Finally someone recognizes Best of Both Worlds for what it is: A good but grossly overrated episode. Part 1 may have been one of the best Star Trek episodes ever made but Part 2 screwed up so much of the buildup, it just doesn't belong on this list.
I would consider The Best of Both Worlds and The Drumhead. Picard's speech to Worf about Simon Tarses "pleading the Seventh" is, in my opinion, one of the best scenes in the series.
Since not one Voyager episode was on this list all my picks are from Voyager ..... The year of hell, Basics 1and 2, futures end, Scorpion 1 and 2 and of course Endgame.
Netflix released a list of their most-watched Star Trek shows and VOY ranked at the top. I have a feeling it might be because a lot of fans didn't watch it the first time round and Star Trek: Discovery gave them the impetus to start watching...
Endgame was terrible rushed piece of shit episode. But Voyager as a total show was my fav of all the shows.
Colwyn Sankey
Blink of an Eye was great, even though it borrowed from TOS Wink of An Eye. And any episodes that featured Species 8471, The Hirogens, The Borgs and Seska. Endgame was weak, and was too Cinderella type end. The year of hell, Basics 1 and 2, futures end, Scorpion 1 and 2 like what he said
Star Trek Enterprise had some good episodes and a great original concept. To make them a Warp 3 Starship with no shields or tracking beam was cool. They had to scrounge for upgrades all the time. Personally, I would not leave Earth with no shields and weak weapons, but I didn't write that show.
You forgot the Doomsday Machine, season 2 episode 6 the original series, the best Sci-Fi episode of all time. They have even done an a half hour special on You Tube about it.
liked that one too!
My favorite episodes are; The Measure of a Man, Who Watches the Watchers, The Drumhead, A Matter of Time, Shuttlepod One, Judgement, Dear Doctor, The City on the Edge of Forever, and A Piece of the action.
I haven't seen enough of Voyager and DS9 to be able to pick favorites.
The visitor is one of the hardest episodes to watch.. actually I avoid it when I can. I have that kind of bond with my own dad. He's the one who got me into DS9. It's such a tearjerk
Duet from DS9 remains my absolute favorite. One of my favorite episodes of television, period.
SO many great character episodes in DS9. O'Brian being tortured for 20 years; Garak and his wire; Kira finding out what her mother did to save her...
Pure class
"Duet" from DS9 is considered by many to be one of the best episodes of all of TV. The fact that it's not on this list is mind boggling
"Death to the opposition!" Is all I have to say about my favourite episode of DS9
Haha - best quote!
"Ahh the Romulans. So predictably treacherous."
Worf shouting, *"Find him and kill him"* from the same episode. :-)
TNG's finale "All Good Things" should be on this list too. It was extremely well done, and clever two-parter.
A brilliant finale to TNG
By far the best Series Finale of any Star Trek series.
At the time, I recall it being said that the two parter was so good, it should have been made into a theatrical release, which has never been done for a series finale.
Worthy of a feature film for sure
Duet should be on this list, just saying.
MF over Duet....m'kay
I agree. And they made that episode because they were out of money but it is so amazing.
"The measure of a man" from The Next Generation is one of my favorites when Picard defends Data that he he is not property of Starfleet & has the right to choose for himself even against Riker's spectacular prosecution performance with the line "and now a machine can be turned off".
Not one Voyager episode!!!!! Really???????
WTF!!!!!!!!
How about I do a top 10 VOY list to appease you?
David Newcdombe I'm surprised there were so many from TOS and DSN because those series were boring AF!
Voyager never achieved the level or morality tales that other Trek shows did unfortunately. It was a missed opportunity.
smally1986 what are u talking about ds9 is so good
Blue Yeah you're right, ds9 is good, at putting you to sleep. I was happy that sisko died, he deserved it for how boring the series was.
Well, I think the episode called "Sarek" from TNG is highly overlooked, very powerful acting from Patrick and Mark! So there!
Funnily enough I mentioned that episode in a very recent video
I agree!
Absolutely.Patrick Stewart's acting in the scene where Picard is overwhelmed by Sarek's emotions(mindmelded from Sarek to Picard) was astonishing.Stewart is a great actor.
+Chris Reidy He is superb in everything he is in; needs to have far more awards!
"A Piece of the Action" episode - SGO.... was funny
I'd add Mirror Mirror from TOS. I'm surprised Magnificent Ferengi made the list. I certainly like the episode, but I'm not sure if it would crack my Top 10 DSP let alone Top 10 overall.
That reminds me; must get onto the Top 10 DS9 list soon...
The Cage still the G.O.A.T. Captain Pike still number one baby!
How is the "year of hell" not on this list?!??!!?!
Year of hell suffered for the same reasons voyager suffers over all. It was a stand alone two parter that didn't have lasting consequences. If voyager had atleast tried to dip its toes in Ds9's like and attempted a season long story, year of hell would have been perfect. Can you imagine? I remember always thinking how great a full season of that story could have been, and it ending with real consequences, but the series just wasn't bold enough.
Shouldn't that read, "Why the Year of Hell was that not on the list?!?!?" ;-)
Because, times... up! Lmao get it?
Technically the Year of Hell never happened as the events were reversed at the end. But I agree, Voyager had many good episodes .
Because voyager sucks
I know this is an old post, but I had to respond when I found this vid. Hands down The City On the Edge Of Forever is my top favorite, first only to "The Visitor"
A perfect Shatner's line “Let's get the hell out of here”. A simply yet emotionally strong dialogue without Shatner's trademark scenery chewing and grandiose gestures. Making his personal sacrifice of letting a woman that he had fell deeply in love with to die; to save humanity; all the more poignant and heroic.
Honorable mention from the same episode:
McCoy: “You deliberately stopped me, Jim! I could have saved her! Do you know what you just did?!”
Spock: “He knows Doctor, he knows”….
The Visitor was heartbreaking. Tony Todd gave an outstanding performance as elderly Jake. The whole premise, a father and son’s unbreakable bond. Jake sacrificing himself and possibly all that he accomplished, so that his dad could be saved. I cry everytime I see that episode!
No mention of 'The Inner Light'?
@@finalfrontier of course The Inner Light is as well a special episode, that I'll remember fondly. It's definitely on the top 10 of cerebral and emotional episode of the Star Trek franchise.
No Drumhead? One of my personal favorites.
Umm, Enterprise? What about the episode Twilight, where T'pol must devotingly care for an injured Captain Archer for many years.
OH YEAH! That is definitely one of my faves!
Final Frontier , Bound and In a Mirror Darkly for good measure..
Correct! I became a nurse for the first time that year and it deeply resonated with me because I was caring for residents with Alzheimer and Dementia when I saw it.
The biggest reason I think that Mirror universe episode from Enterprise deserves to be on this list is because it got rid of that terrible opening credits music that the show uses in every other episode.
That one was extremely touching. Also got a chance to showcase that Jolene Blalock was actually a pretty great actress.
"He knows, doctor. He knows."
😭
I'd add Far Beyond the Stars to this, perhaps drop In a Mirror Darkly.
Yes. That's got to be #4 on this list.
SB0780 agreed! I personally dislike all the mirror universe episodes. With all these huge differences between the universes, somehow generations of people (and aliens) ended up with the same partners and gave birth to the exact same offspring, who also happened to end up in the same proximity to each other somehow... that really annoys the hell out of me.
Far Beyond the Stars is an infinitely better choice. Or another one of my favorites: "The Offspring" from TNG
My favorite is The Duet from the first season of DS9.
I'm really surprised that _Magnificent Ferengi_ made the list and _Duet_ didn't.
“Duet“ is my favorite Star Trek episode of all time
I'd put Only a Paper Moon from DS9 up there personally, maybe that's just my love for Nog as a character speaking, but seeing his struggles as a young soldier dealing with PTSD was one of the most poignant moments I've seen through the show, for me only being topped by the Inner Light (and only just)
Absolutely can't disagree that this episode is phenomenal
"Tapestry" from TNG has always been one of my favorites. I also believe that there were many good Voyager episodes such as "Drone", and who could forget TOS episode "Arena"?
If you like Tapestry then I suggest you might want to take a look at the TNG top 10 eps list
Or TOS's "Mirror Mirror "This Side of Paradise", "The Corbomite Manuever", "Journey to Babel" , "Is There in Truth No Beauty?", and "A Taste of Armageddon ". All excellent!
McCoy: "Jim! I could've saved her! Do you know what you just did?"
Spock: "He knows, Doctor. He knows."
After reading a few posts, I have to agree that VOYAGER The Year of Hell was a glaring omission. TNG All Good Things is a very fitting conclusion to that series. It should at least have an honorable mention. Also TOS The Menagerie was awesome! It melded the Enterprise pre - Captain Kirk with the old crew Captain Pike through Spock with a court martial plus original pilot footage. I personally like TOS The Doomsday Machine. Yes I know it's just a retelling of Ahab and the Whale BUT it works!
Many of those have been mentioned in the comments many times!
Good one that, Menagerie. I often wonder how Star Trek would have faired with Jeffery Hunter as Pike, as "the Kirk". I don't know the circumstances of his not playing that role, but makes you think!!!
@@ronschlorff7089 Jeffrey Hunter actually TURNED DOWN the role of Captain in the second pilot. He remarked that it would've interfered with his movie shoots which he wanted to pursue instead. He was dead by 1969 though. It might've been an iconic role for him had he taken it.
@@charleskuckel3173 thanks for that background. Sorry to hear he died so young :(
Oh, and "The Inner Light" (TNG) is definitely justified in having a place on that list.
Even hearing that tiny snippet of the flute theme brought a lump to my throat, and I think I have something in my eye...
I'm surprised that neither "Darmok" (TNG) nor "Far Beyond the Stars" (DS9) were on the list.
"Darmok" was, to me, quintessential Star Trek. The discovery within a potential adversary of a commonality that leads to understanding, and the realisation that Captain Dathon and his crew were almost exactly the same as Picard and the Enterprise crew: explorers, willing to risk their lives for understanding and knowledge.
"Far Beyond the Stars" was unusual, but brilliant. The social commentary alone was tremendous, and it showed a very different side to Trek, with a willingness to explore timely topics of racism and bigotry without shrouding them in sci-fi cloaks.
Lastly - while writing about "Darmok" and its wonderful story of an enemy becoming a friend when communication is established, I was reminded of another sensational episode that should have made the list: "The Devil in the Dark" (TOS).
So many more great episodes to include . . . a few could be:
TNG - Measure of a Man, Schisms, Frame of Mind, Remember Me, Time Squared, Power Play, Inheritance, Clues, Timescape, The Next Phase, The Mind’s Eye, Half a Life, Night Terrors, Starship Mine, Genesis, Phantasms, The Offspring, The Drumhead, Disaster, Tapestry, Parallels, Identity Crisis, Lower Decks, Cause & Effect, Best of Both Worlds, Rascals, Descent, Time’s Arrow, Future Imperfect . . .
VOY - The Thaw, Equinox, Deadlock, Blink of an Eye, The 37’s, Timeless, Memorial, Ex Post Facto, Worst Case Scenario, Real Life, The Disease, The Chute, Year of Hell, Oblivion, Resolutions, One . . .
DS9 - The Forsaken, Whispers, Field of Fire, The Assignment, Second Skin, The House of Quark, Dax, Visionary, Rivals, Inquisition, Extreme Measures, Move Along Home, Duet, Far Beyond the Stars, Little Green Men . . .
Okay, so my lists are way too long, there are soooooooo many more, from TOS, DS9 and ENT as well, but if I don’t stop now, this would truly be a novel - I’m continuously reminded of more and more that I love!
Okay, I’ll mention 1 from TOS and 1 from ENT. Doomsday Machine, E2(squared)
And the Nazi episodes: Patterns of Force (TOS), Storm Front (ENT), The Killing Game (VOY)
I periodically binge all my favorites from each, as most are available on Netflix or Amazon Prime. 🥰🥰🥰
I’m suddenly in the mood to do it again!
Incredible episodes you list there... Funnily though, 'Move Along Home' was listed in the Worst 10 eps list - go check it out
Final Frontier - it may have been, but I enjoyed it, so it’s in MY list of favorites. Much like beauty, favorite episodes are in the eye of the beholder.
Final Frontier - (I’m not saying it was some groundbreaking storyline, I just loved how Quark learned a lesson. I found the episode memorable and enjoyable)
There are so many great episodes in all the Star Treks. Too many to narrow down to 10. I'm glad to see one of my favorites made the list 'The Magnificent Ferengi" I thought that was great and funny.
It was a well placed episode amongst the heavy war-themed episodes. Absurd but comedy gold
You could easily fill this list with just DS9 episodes, it's just that superior.
Correct.
Are you telling me there are ten DS9 episodes that are better than all other Trek episodes ever made?
@@julioverne579 yes
What am I missing about DS9? I've watched all the other series through at least a couple times in the last few years, but just cannot get into DS9, after a couple of aborted attempts at binge watching. Just so uninteresting and with too many goofy characters. So now I have decided to skip the first 2 seasons and started with season 3, which seems to be better. Now well into season 4, and agree it is definitely getting better. But still in 5th place behind TOS, Enterprise, TNG and Voyager. Maybe it will continue to get better in seasons 5 - 7.
DS9 was a game-changer. Along with B5, it changed the narrative of television series with its arc stories. Obviously we all enjoy different things but DS9 was just incredible - season 3 & 4 are where it all really kicks off: the developing story is intriguing but the journeys of all the characters is what really pushed the boundaries into new territory for Star Trek. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series
DS9: Far Beyond the Stars, not only a perfect essay about the price of bigotry, also the power of dreams. TNG: All Good Things, the hail and farewell TNG earned and deserved.
As someone who as a kid really looked up to my dad, The Visitor is genuinely painful to watch which makes it such a good episode.
Shaka, when the walls fell.
temba, his arms wide.
I flipping love that episode. Thanks for that.
While I love the Original Series, I just never cared for City On The Edge Of Forever (or any of the ones involving the Earth’s past or similar worlds). My favorite is Devil In The Dark, because it shows how completely misunderstood the “monster” was,and how peaceful she really was. It was the humans who needed forgiveness... then they worked together for MUCH better results.
I also loved Journey To Babel as it introduced Spock’s father and 🖖. It demonstrated what The Federation really did along with giving a glimpse into Spock’s relationship with his father and his commitment to his duties as First Officer. Plus it introduced so many great alien species! What’s not to love?
I have been re-watching Enterprise on Netflix. It's been many years since seeing it, so it's as thought I'm watching it for the first time since I don't remember much. This series was underrated. It is very good. Interesting stories, well written and good acting.
What I love about the new Discovery is it is very different than all the past series. It is great to see a new spin on an old theme. The target demographic of todays audience has different expectations and interests then a decade or two ago so the changes they made to capture that audience makes sense. To give a small example of how the changes in Discovery have grabbed a new audience ... my wife who has always thought all of the Star Trek series were poorly acted and 'cheesy' watches Discovery with me an actually enjoys it!
+Adam Woodhouse I have not been able to get my wife to watch Star Trek although she did watch a few episodes of Enterprise this year and didn't mind it. But she is also loving Discovery and looking forward to the rest of the season
i agree. 4 me its the same 4 the star wars prequels. in both cases jj abrams new crap made me appreciate the old shows/movies and overlook any problems i had with them lol
Definitly "The Inner Light". Thought I'm also found of the classic dual episode "The Best of Both Worlds".
This easily one of the best top tens of Star Trek, and I completely agree, almost. I just switch the top two.
City on the Edge of Forever was the greatest, followed by Bread and Circuses.
Inner light & the visitor both make me blub, every, single, time...
We are but human!
Sometimes I think it can't be that tragic. Why should I cry? I know what's coming. 45 minutes later: crying. The stories are just that well paced and are so beautifully building up to those moments that it's really hard not to be moved.
Keep this in mind everyone, Star Trek: The Original Series was going to be cancelled after the first season, but due "The City on the Edge of Forever" winning the Hugo Award, an important SCI - FI award at the time, the series continues and the rest of the Star Trek Series follow suit.
Don't forget the "fan" letter writing campaign (I am one of the writers) that helped keep TOS on the air.
There are four lights!!!
there's some brilliant scenes and acting in it, but at the same time it's a frustrating episode with Jellico in charge.
Riker and Troi are complete asses in that episode. Jelico was right in so many ways.
Jelico was unlikeable but he made very valid points
Seriously, that was one of the worst episodes.
Chain of Command?!?
I would have liked to see the episode as offspring. This is my favorite episode from Star Trek the next generation.
My personal top three: 1) In the Pale Moonlight (apparently a reference to "You ever dance with the Devil in the pale moonlight" delivered by Jack Nicholson in the 1989 Batman movie); 2) The Inner Light; and 3) Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges (DS9).
Those are great choices
Personally I'd agree with 'City On The Edge Of Forever' being in #1 position. Part of that is nostalgia from that era's story telling and part is the dilemma Kirk finds himself in (and the fact he and the audience know about the nature of that dilemma for a large part of the episode). 'In The Pale Moonlight' is also a personal favorite and thankfully shows that in war there are always consequences. Being human means being faced with the strong possibility that whatever you do there will be victims and suffering despite your best intentions.
STOS "The Doomsday Machine."
Lots of fans mentioning that ep
Surprised "TNG The Offspring" and "The Measure of a Man" weren't on here
The Drumhead was my favourite TNG episode. Great commentary on paranoia and Cold War hysteria.
"Cold War Hysteria" is a myth, the concerns were all very real. Stop being brainwashed by anti-American propaganda.
Kavik Kang The fears about communists under every rock in America was hysteria. McCarthy was hysterical. It’s not anti American to recognize when legitimate fear has turned to paranoid witch trials.
No, it wasn't. That was all true. Everything McCarthy (and many others) were trying to tell you was entirely 100% true. Soviet intelligence assassinated Senator McCarthy to silence him. Everything you believe are lies and propaganda. Soviet/Russian intelligence is the most powerful force in this world, and has been since the 1920's. What you believe is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the truth. Welcome back to reality!
Kavik Kang Well, you’re insane, so I’m done trying to make you see reason. Good luck out there. The scary Russians are coming for you! 🤪
No, I know history. You are an ignorant moron. Start reading about history, especially Russian history, and stop making a fool of yourself ignorantly babbling about a subject you clearly know nothing about. Infiltrating societies and subverting them to communism is exactly what the Russians do, and they've been doing it since the 1920's. You've been brainwashed, the real world is EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE of what you think it is. I actually know what I am talking about, you very obviously know less than nothing about the subject.
What "reason" was it that you were attempting to "make me see"? Oh, that's right, that was just meaningless babble attempting to make yourself feel superior. You are a fool who has been brainwashed into believing that Soviet/Russian intelligence does not exist. You may as well be on their side. Get professional help and become an American again.
Voyager is my favorite one. A woman as capitain, lost at delta quadrant and facing The Borgs. It's the best for me.
Two personal favorites that I haven't seen here
Voyagers Death Wish
DS9 Duet
DS9 - “Duet”. A masterpiece.
(No Voyager - very telling)
Very tired of everyone maligning Voyager. There were some wonderful stories told in that series. Kathryn Janeway is one of the most powerful female characters ever created. And Jeri Ryan rose so far above the T&A factor that originally brought her to the show. Love Voyager. With the exception of TOS I have rewatched the series more than any other.
Enterprise was a missed opportunity with a cast who never really gelled and characters who drove me to distraction.
I thoroughly enjoyed TNG but it will never surpass TOS in part because of the revolutionary nature of the original in its day. The acting on TNG vs TOS was far superior with the exception of Leonard Nimoy, of course.
DS9 never really grabbed me. It was well written, complex but sometimes too heavy handed. It's the only series I never actually finished.
That's a real shame re DS9; was absolutely epic at times
Final Frontier DS9 was well done. I would never dispute the overall quality. It just didn't hold my attention. Maybe it was the characters. Maybe it was the actors... I really don't know why *shrugs*
It's only seven seasons - give it a whirl. ;-)
I'm going to disagree with you on Voyager. Janeway was a Captain that never needed her crew. Every solution was hers. She always had the answers. She was overconfident, but somehow always right. Kate did the best she could with the material she was given for that character, but it was exceptionally rare to discover a flaw in Captain Janeway, and that made her unbelievable. Stuffy. Obnoxious. That the writers wrote so much of the crew as if they were children in their interactions with Janeway just exacerbated how frustrating she was in the lead role.
Voyager itself could never bring itself to accept stakes. They'd build you up, then retcon everything at the end of the episode back to the status quo. Year of Hell would have made a TERRIFIC season, but they teased us, then resorted to their usual sci-fi tricks instead of treating us to some real human drama in a sci-fi universe.
Was it entertaining? Sure, it could be at times. There was some good acting and some of the characters could be compelling. But aside from Janeway's superiority complex, it was inconsistent. You have every right to your perspective on the show, but I did not find it to be good storytelling.
Jeri Ryan proved she is an exceptional actress on Voyager. In "Body and Soul", for instance, she didn't just play The Doctor, she WAS The Doctor.

Tbh there is no top 10 trek ...as there so many great episodes
Trek is the best TV out there it's thrilling , dramatic , sombre , comedic etc it's a sci fi that's everything in one
It's ahead of the time forever and always
Here here!
I think "Far Beyond the Stars" is one of the best episodes of Star Trek.
STAR TREK: Discovery? Don't waste your time.
+ZbOROVAN Painter I'm loving it so far...
It has the best first season since the original series.
It has started well but is flawed as a 'Star Trek' series I feel, but I'm very hopeful that it will truly find its feet quickly as that Mudd episode was class
It's' excelent.
@@martinpintus Yikes. I can only assume the STD likers are under 40 (or 30) years old. Michael Burnam is up there with Jar jar in being unlikeable. While STD is getting a little better The Orville is head and shoulders better than STD.
City on the edge of of tomorrow blew my mind! Just saw it a few weeks ago for the 1st time.
That reminds me, I need to do a TOS rewatch!
One of the best, TNG 118 (season 5, episode 18): Cause and Effect
Totally agree. Check out my TNG Top 10 list
I'll do it ;°)
Done and totally agree!
Any you would change? I love 'All Good Things' so would probably add that in if I was to do it again
I so agree on city at the edge of forever and inner light
The visitor for me would be number one, but its a good list.
A beautiful episode indeed
I loved it. My son was like 8 when we first saw it. We both cried. Hell, we bawled. To this day, he refuses to watch it again, and he's 27 now.
I have resisted the temptation too; saw it around two decades ago now. I think some day fairly soon I'll be doing a full rewatch - hopefully of an HD version
There should be some honorable mentions. Voyager did have a few good episodes.
Here's my list of 10 Honorable Mentions (in no particular order):
Mirror, Mirror - TOS
The Doomsday Machine - TOS
Best of Both Worlds - TNG
Darmok - TNG
Duet - DS9
Waltz - DS9
Blink of an Eye - VOY
Latent Image - VOY
Similitude - ENT
Azati Prime - ENT
Sorry to say that at least two Voyager episodes should have been on your list... The Equinox and Scorpion two-parters. I would put Year of Hell on the list but all that does for me is suggest at what the whole series should have been about. It just points to Voyager's amazing, but hugely wasted, premise. Basics, Timeless, Relativity and Blink of an Eye would be honourable mentions.
The Inner Light is the only Trek episode that brings a tear to my eye, when the flute is revealed at the end.
Really? Nothing from Voyager?
+Jana Meehan Maybe Voyager populated 11 to 20?
Maybe not all 10, but the show took a boost when Seven arrived. I wish there had been more of Species 8472. They were interesting.
Two of my personal favorites are both two part episodes from DS9. "In Purgatory's Shadow/By Inferno's Light," and "Favor the Bold/Sacrifice of Angels." Also I really like "The Siege of AR-558." Oh man I almost forgot about "Improbable Causes/The Die is Cast." Such a great show.
Have you watched the DS9 Documentary 'What We Left Behind' yet?
@@finalfrontier If I have its been a while, I'll see if I can find it.
Dragons Teeth Voyager
If I was making a list, I woukd have included the following: Blink of an Eye, Real Life (VOY), The Siege of AR-558, Far Beyond the Stars (DS9) to name a few. You managed to get some of my favourites on this list though already :)
darmok and jalad at tanagra...
Yes! A beautiful episode. Shaka, when the walls fell down.
Temba, his arms wide
+Final Frontier -- "Chenza at court. The court of silence. CHENZA!"
I really wish they would have done more with that species. I would really have liked to learn more about their culture and history.
Maybe they'll visit them in the new series?
You left out The Doomsday Machine (TOS)
Live long and prosper forever
Peace and long life
that classic Spock line works remarkably well in real life, but only a few folks today get it. Try it some time :D
I just recently got into Star Trek, and been binging TNG for the last few months which got me to the end of Season 6 right now. I started with it because I thought that the outdated looks from TOS wouldn`t make me able to enjoy the ST universe and therefore Roddenberrys vision to the fullest. But right now, just when i got a little frightened of the prospect that the TNG experience is over the next season (for me), i read your comments and see that every other (classic) ST series seems just to be as great as TNG, which just hypes me to start DS9 and see the events of the Dominion war.
I was so sad when TNG ended; can still feel that heartbreak. But indeed DS9 was a fantastic series. I'm also (re-)watching VOY and it's giving me so much joy
@@finalfrontier I guess in that regard, i was lucky to start the series this summer at just the perfect time. Just when Patrick Stewart confirmed the new Picard series!
I guess it will take some time to get through DS9, but after that i will take an extensive look at VOY! After watching this video, i`m really looking forward to both!
@@finalfrontier Now a few weeks have passed since i finished TNG, and when i started DS9 i kind of felt betrayed in a way that, despite being Star Trek, the magic of Roddenberrys vision, seemed to simply had vanished... I watched it until Episode 9, but then discontinued watching. Is there a point when DS9 turns into a better direction, or is the first season representative for the whole series (in comparison to my DS9 experience so far, for me, even the first season of TNG is lightyears ahead...)?
@@daLoerdchen DS9 is different to TNG but it is brilliant overall. Most acknowledge that the first two seasons in particular are relatively poor. I would highly recommend you continue watching, it is an incredible ride and really picks up to some highly compelling television. It shows some of the biggest events that will hit the alpha quadrant ever. I envy you that you are watching for the first time! Hope you decide to complete and would love to know your thoughts at the end
It's been 4/5 years. What say you?
Not a single episode from Voyager?
It was a select population (see description) so maybe a consequence of that? I'm planning to watch VOY again from the beginning; I lost touch with the latter seasons when my subscription changed so there are lots of episodes I've probably missed. Looking forward to it!
Final Frontier Voyager is a good series. Ironically it was the second Star Trek series I started to follow, after Enterprise.
(Reruns Space Channel)
Planning a series rewatch soon! I missed EPA in the latter seasons as I didn't have satellite TV when it was airing first time round...
Should have known Forever would be at the top. The episode is so obvious and overwrought. There are many better TOS episodes to choose from. the rest of the list is pretty good though.
I kinda agree. It's a great episode in itself, but there's far better in TOS. Personally I'd at least rank "Mirror, Mirror" above it.
I agree with you , Michael. It wasn't one my favorites either. It was well done, but a little sappy, I thought.
Agreed. Where's The Doomsday Machine, or the Ultimate Computer or many others.
Spock's, "I am endeavoring, Ma'am, to construct a mnemonic memory circuit using stone knives and bearskins." when going over his Fleming valve "tricorder" was (in my opinion anyway) a classic quote. :-)
@@telephony yeah, and by God it worked!!! Spock, best character of all of Star Trek; no one else on this list could even "dry clean his cape"!! If he had one :D
If these are the top ten, where would you place TNG "The measure of a man"?
Sacrifice of Angels
A Top 10 DS9 eps is incoming...
Well I’m pleased to see TOS has made the number one spot! And garnered three spots on the list. Considering TOS is vastly outnumbered by quantity of episodes it is impressive and says a great deal for the original. However I would like to have seen “The Corbomite Maneuver”, “The Conscience of The King.”, “Mirror, Mirror”, “Space Seed”, and “Metamorphosis” on the list and maybe in the #1 spot!
So all of them TOS?!
Measure Of A Man !

From this list I only agree with the choice of The Inner Light from The Next Generation, and that is probably because that happens to be my favorite episode of Star Trek the Next Generation.
Here's the Worst 10 Star Trek episodes list: ua-cam.com/video/6e3CRTQ18JI/v-deo.html
A reminder that this list was done by fans attending the 50th Anniversary Star Trek convention so please don't shoot the messenger! Personally, 'The Inner Light' is my absolute favourite - how about you?
I try and watch 'The Inner Light' at least twice a year. It is my favorite episode of ANY television series.
+ROBERT McMURTRY I salute you sir! I haven't actually watched it beyond the first time. I want to watch the whole series again one day in order so saving it for that far flung day...
My one regret is that I can never watch it (or any episode, really) for the first time ever again.
I remember the first time I watched "The Inner Light", I was disappointed, no Starship battles, Romulan or Borg storyline, but as I viewed it again and again and understood it's premise, it is a top 5 episode in the TNG series...
No Voyager episodes
Best of Both Worlds, Tapestry, In the pale moonlight, all good things, the drumhead, sacrifice of angels...
My personal favorite episodes
Great choices
How do you leave out Far Beyond the Stars DS9? Also, how can you rank Chain of Command #8 on your best TNG list, then put it on your all time greatest Star Trek episodes list? What the other 5 or so episodes ranked higher on TNG aren't good enough for the all Star Trek list?
+Jonathan Cole This top 10 was developed by fans attending the 50th Anniversary Star Trek convention in Las Vegas
The real trouble with tribbles: Bones acting like starving them was a ground breaking solution.
“The Doomsday Machine” and “The Ultimate Computer”. Scary in how prophetic they are turning out to be.
Only 10 choices just isn’t enough for how many good Trek episodes there are. My examples are: ‘Mirror, mirror,’ ‘Measure of a Man,’ ‘Call to Arms,’ ‘Sacrifice of Angels,’ ‘Shattered,’ ‘Year of Hell,’ ‘All Good Things,’ ‘Best of Both Worlds,’ ‘Redemption,’ ‘Equinox,’ ‘The Search,’ ‘Duet,’ ‘Waltz,’ ‘What You Leave Behind,’ and many more I’m sure.
none from Voyager - one of my favorite Star Trek series beside the original
With so many wonderful episodes to choose from, a top ten is rather unfair to the one doing the ranking. Having said that, every one of the aforementioned episodes is a true classic and I cannot find real fault with any of your choices. Well done!
Thank you but I can't take credit as it's not my choices! See the description...
Nevertheless, you put this video together, chose the scenes you would show and put tremendous effort into it. You deserve credit for that much at least.
Thank you. It's funny you mention that today as CBS has decided to put in copyright strikes on nearly every single one of my Star Trek videos so it's unlikely I'll ever do anything Star Trek related again...
In the Pale Moonlight is by far my favorite DS9 episode.. one of the boldest I'd ever seen... especially that ending!
"In a Mirror, Darkly" was the episode that got me to watch all of "Enterprise," and I'm glad I did.
Other than the original series episode, Mirror Mirror, I did not care for the mirror universe episodes. Two DS9 episodes that should have made the list are Duet which featured a fantastic performance by Harris Yulin, and The Siege of AR 558.
#8 was "inspired" by "The Enemy Below", a WWII film about a battle between an American destroyer and a U-boat. The cloaking device was invented to parallel the surfacing of the U-boat to attack.
That analogy makes a lot of sense - thanks for that!
Lots of Star Trek TOS stories were "inspired" by classic science fiction and adventure stories. "For The Earth is Hollow and I Have Touched The Sky" (I hope I got that right) is similar to "Innocents of The Sky" by Robert Heinlein. The Gorn was The Roller in a story about an immaterial race, staging a contest of champions to decide whether the human fleet or the roller fleet of starships gets exterminated to stop their war. Differing from the original story, the superbeings do not kill the extraterrestrials after the captain of the earth flagship cripples his enemy.
Is there a list of stories that inspired TOS episodes somewhere?
I don't know. I read the stories over the years and was struck by the similarities. I first saw that movie decades ago. I think someone on the series confirmed the movie's influence, and the interviewee said they took inspirations from wherever they could. I didn't forget, and I was looking for them.
I couldn't find a list, but I found out the author of the Roller Story ("Arena") eventually received royalties from Desilu for the Gorn story "Arena". I guess they didn't have the budget for a rolling tentacled creature.
