Must suck to not be able to walk out the street and just go in to a second hand store and just pick up a manga for 100-200 yen ($1-2) Hi from Japan, kudos to you manga collectors (it's scary how much it cost outside of here) sorry for bad English, I've only been self studying it for 2 years
@@drk355 yeah, American comics prices are insane here in Japan. I only collect one English comic series, it's called the adventure of tintin. My wallet cries everytime I buy one of it...
First off your English is amazing man truly. Tokyo Japan is the number one place I want to visit for at least a few weeks, I was thinking of saving up and going with my girlfriend next summer, would you recommend me to start trying to learn Japanese now and how hard do you think it is to learn compared to English?
@@hakobo2744 you don't need to learn Japanese to have fun in Japan. it depends on where u go but almost all places that people typically visit are very english-friendly (not sure if that's a word), just pick up some words that might come in handy during travel and you'll be good to go But yeah I'd definitely recommend learning a new language (it doesn't necessarily have to be Japanese, just go with what u like) As for "was English hard to learn", yeah it was pretty tough in the beginning but watching cartoons and slowly transitioning into books and movies helped a lot. Personally I think it's harder for Japanese to learn English than for English speakers to learn jp (the amount of grammatical verb forms are insane and I think it'll take you a very long time until u pick up the basic kanjis, unless your Chinese, Japanese is very "anti-phonetic", if you don't know how to read the word, u just don't, it's not like other latin based languages that u can just guess the sound)
But they don't have any translated version in those stores right😢Even if I do visit Japan I can't buy those cheap mangas😢I won't be able to read them after all.
Right stuff sucks for the ones outside U.S Bookdepositry is definitely your best bet, and of course your local imported bookstores too (and dont forget sales!)

I loved that you mentioned Facebook Marketplace. That place and Kijiji are my go-to for manga. (Please note that I’m Canadian so the price for a normal size manga is 13$ here) I found in a span of a month I found for 10$ I got 21 volumes and for 80$ I got 100 volumes. Of course I had no idea what the series were and the 10$ ones smelled like weed for a few months, but I managed to find so many Tokyo Pop manga it was great.

I don't read a lot of manga but when i do, i read them online. Then i got the idea to order some manga books and compare the reading experience and i have to admit that reading them physically is completely different from reading them on a screen. On paper you get almost captivated by the artwork. I started with the first 6 volumes of "Vagabond" in the Vizbig format and the whole "Pluto" series. I also bought "Uzumaki" which is a very interesting and different read. I think, instead of throwing out my money every month for useless junk that holds no value, i will invest about 50-100 dollars in mangas each month.
My favorite manga is GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka, and that's been out of print for a looong time (even though the sequel manga is on going in Japan.) So it being out of print doesn't mean it ain't good.
I usually watch the anime, but when I read my first manga a month ago, I realized how much I loved reading manga way better! Since then I got Volume 1-10 of fire force (just got 5-10 yesterday), my hero academia 1-24, and one punch man 1-2! I’m new to collecting, and I can’t wait to see my collection grow! Since I don’t have a job since I’m not old enough to get one, I ended up selling my tv in my room to get even more volumes! I still have quite a lot of money yet, but I’m gonna buy a shelf with the rest of the money.
Tip 1.. If only I could buy from Right Stuff. There are a few online shops in my country that bring manga and it's usually market place or higher. Volumes that are $13 being sold for $18. Sales do come and some are below market price without a sale, too. But I do get discount codes often, like 25% off so that's good. So I tend to put aside the more expensive volumes for once a discount code comes.
Here's my collection seeming as everyones doing it (also includes LN's: Jojo's 1(1-3) and 2 (1-3) Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction 1-4 Land Of The Lustrous 1-7 Junji Ito's Cat Diary (My first ever manga, someone just randomly gave it to me one day and it spiralled from there) No Game No Life 1-9 Bloodlad 1-9, all time favourite and first anime I ever watched Arpeggio Of Blue Steel 1-5 Monogatari first/second season Zaregoto 1-3 Full Death Note series in that 2600 page mega book Hunter X Hunter 1-10
I've gotten quite a lot of manga from Ebay such as Bleach volumes 1-23 for about $50. I'm also collecting the Claymore manga which is one of my favorites.
@@sugeevan9171 I've read up to volume 18 of Claymore and so far I've enjoyed the story thus far. Lot of action and wide variety of monsters and slayers with different strengths and weaknesses. Kind of reminiscent to Berserk or the Witcher series.
Great tips! May I also add, if you are bilingual/multilingual you can buy manga in different languages, some foreign companies also print manga that is out of print in English. (it’s often cheaper too). I’ve been collecting for four years now, here’s my collection so far: In Russian: Future Diary 1-12 My little monster 1-11 Berserk 1 Noragami 1-10 Ajin Demi human 1-6 Tomie 1-2 A girl on the shore 1-2 In German: Gute Nacht Punpun box set Killing stalking season 1 box set Killing stalking season 2 box set Your name deluxe edition In English: Death note Black Edition 1-6 Tokyo ghoul 1-14 Tokyo ghoul re 1-16 Seraph of the end 1-18 Angels of death 1-9 Assassination classroom 1-21 Corpse party 1-5 Wolf Children Black butler 1-15 Pandora hearts box set The case study of Vanitas 1-5 Kakegurui 1-10 Vampire Knight 1-19 Banana fish 1-19 The saga of Tanya the evil 1-6 All of Junji Ito’s works Another Ibitsu Orange 1-2 I’m so proud of how far my collection has come 🥰

I was just telling my husband how I always pick up the first three volumes of a series as for me that's usually the amount it takes for me to decide if I like the series or not and I'm glad someone else shares that preference 😁
You should never buy anything at full retail price. 2:07 With manga, that’s one of my concerns. If things go out of print then resellers are going to jack the price up and try to get people to spend 2x or more on the manga. I agree that this community is very welcoming and helpful. I’m not sure how I found this community but I’m glad that I did. 💯 I’ve met and chatted online with lots of great people.
This is really helpful thank you!! I’m starting my manga collection and right now I have the complete series for orange, a silent voice, and princess jellyfish. But I also have the first 1 or 2 volumes of other series :)

sad thing is that in my country collecting manga is sooo difficult i have to import manga from canada and US its soo time consuming and expansive but u know the rest
M AB What country are you from, let me recommend book depository, it is cheap, they take money instantly, you can pay safely with pay pal and even get money back if you dont get your manga which almost never happen and they have great service, they resend manga, they cam refund and they even ship all around the world for FREE and they ship it to your local box office and they send you emails and you cant see ship status on their web and when your order arrives you will get a mail, i was unsure if i would get my stuff but it took like 16 days but i got my stuff un damaged i bought berserk deluxe edition 1,2 and 3.
same here, in new zealand manga is quite overpriced and the selection is quite limited. i use bookdepository though and its saved my life lol but its hard to find out of print stuff still (like katekyo hitman reborn)

I also read digitally. Out of my major digital reads (so not including shorts or one shots) I’m caught up with Kaguya Sama, I read all of Chainsaw Man and Inside Mari. I’m currently reading Tokyo Ghoul. I’ve been reading a lot of webtoons since summer last year, some of the prominent ones include: Bastard (my first webtoon), Sweet Home, True Beauty, Remarried Empress, Your Throne and White Blood. I read season 1 of Noblesse but dropped it since. I’m planning to read Tower of God once I catch up on collecting Yona, finish Tokyo Ghoul and I’m planning on starting some other manga like Dr Stone, BNHA, Oyasumi Punpun and possibly Vinland Saga since I recently finished the anime and would like to see where it goes next.
Am I the only one who prefers paperback single volumes to all the multi volume and hardcover editions? And not just because of price, I think they look better, feel better, and are much better on shelves. Since I don't plan to run over my volumes, I don't really think I need hardcovers.

I recently got into collecting manga. I also collect vinyl and pop figures so I really have to balance my purchases. I am currently only buying manga for anime I watched and loved and wanted a look into the longer story of it. I currently have Death Note complete which I used B&N's manga sale for. I'm collecting the Sailor Moon Eternal Edition (need 2 more) and Tokyo Ghoul ( i need 4 more.) Thanks for all the tips, I'm excited to expand my collection!
Yona of the dawn! Ah! Didnt know anyone else who had it on their shelf. I'm a tomboy and I rarely like series aimed at the female demographic but I fell in love! The characters are just so much fun to watch.
Great tips I've never heard of camel camel camel. I love collecting manga black clover has been one of my favorites lately, I want to start collecting dorehedoro it sounds like an interesting series. Made in abyss manga is one of my favorite series its sooooooo good
Great tips! I agree with all of these! I also recommend your local anime conventions! There are garage sale trades where people bring their old anime and manga. You can also find good deals on manga and anime, depending on the seller. I found the out of print Bandai set for Carried by the Wind Tsukikage Ran for $30.
honestly i agree with all of these tips, however, obviously i can't at the minute, but there's just something i absolutely love about going out to my local forbidden planet and buying manga from there because it's a nice feeling and also they have a deal on 24/7 365 where you can get 3 for 2 and since most manga are about £7 so you can get 3 volumes for £14 which is amazing so you can spend a lot less than necessary but also buy a LOT at the same time. i bought all of 20th century boys for under £100 which is just incredible
Hmmm I guess this is a tip, but for new collectors if you are planning on growing your manga making an excel file will help you. It helps you see if you finished collecting it, or what volumes your still missing. There are some youtubers who also do this, one of them that I know of is Himeka
Always buy sailor moon! Rightstufanime.com get the eternal collection. I think $24 a volume but they put it on sale for like $14-17. Worth it! Volumes 9 and 10 are up for pre-order. I think after that the only volumes left will be the 2 volumes for sailor v.
Thought I'd share my tiny manga collection lol: -Bloom Into You(Volumes 1-7 and im currently waiting for volume 8 to be released in America even tho i read it online) -Pokemon Adventures: Ruby & Sapphire(volumes 1-22) -Our Wonderful Days(Volume 1-2) -A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow(Volumes 1-2) -Highschool of the Dead(Volumes 1-3) Kakegurui(Volumes 1-3) Komi can't communicate(volumes 1-5) Citrus(Volumes 1-10) Citrus+ volume 1 Kaguya-sama: Love is war(volumes 1-3) Sankarea(Volumes 1-3)
I thought bloom into you volume 8 released a while ago? Well im currently in the process of buying all of the citrus manga (rip the rushed ending :/). Im also really thinking about picking up bloom into you manga but I think I will have to decide against it. Ive already read all of it, and I think I prefer citrus but only by a little!
@@winstonsuni1346 I think it's coming out somewhere in August(at least the English release :) )and personally I love Citrus but prefer Bloom Into You by a lot because it was really well-written in my opinion. Bloom into you is my favorite series of all time so I think that's why I'm encouraging it- Then there's also the bloom into you Sayaka light novel spin-off which is really good :D
I am currently starting to collect Tokyo Ghoul and I really liked the first volume so I bought the 2nd and 3rd and I still liked it so I am buying one Volume Per Month and I now have 11 Volumes of Tokyo Ghoul ^^
I will admit, I read a LOT of manga online. I feel pretty guilty about not supporting the mangakas but if I LOVE it - I buy it. Right now I'm buying Dorohedoro, only have 5 more to go!
If I’m buying a new series for the first time I read a few chapters of it online (like 10-20 chapters) to see if I like the vibe of the story and if I’m interested
now that i'm in a bit of a better financial situation i'm slowly starting to build my manga collection. it's still a bit small compared to what i would like to own (because i love a LOT of series), but just knowing that i'm able to finally start collecting makes me so happy.
The bad thing about collecting, is when you first start its. Go GO GO GOGOGO. Then you have hundreds of volumes and you have read maybe 50 volumes and you dont have any money to buy the series you actually like so then you get bored of the hobby or maybe stressed because you feel something will go out of stock so you stop collecting all together. Comic books was that for me so im trying to take manga slow and steady.
These are great tips! I am starting to get better at finding things for cheap now hahaha xD I just need to cool it on buying the new stuff so quick at the start!
My collection as of June 2020... -Attack on Titan, Vol. 1 - 30 -Black Lagoon, Vol. 1 - 11 -Dragon Ball (3-in-1), Vol. 1 - 14 (Vol. 1 - 42 / Complete) -Fullmetal Alchemist - Complete Box Set (Vol. 1 - 27) -Gangsta, Vol. 1 - 8 -Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Vol. 1 - 9 -Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Kanna's Daily Life, Vol. 1 - 6 As a side note, the 3-in-1 editions of Dragon Ball were, for me, probably the best way to go in terms of getting the full series at a good price. It cost me far less than the individual volumes or box sets would have.
My collection: Tokyo ghoul 1 and 2 (but it’s not even mine I got it for my sister for Christmas lol) And bloom into you 1 and 2 coming soon in about 5 business days.
Hello there ah so you have Bloom Into you aswell eh? Don't see that many talk bout that one. I have 2 volumes the stopped but I want to collect manga again so I may scoop that one up again agh I was gonna ask how is the series to you but you did not even begin it yet. Citrus is pretty good too just saying since you have Bloom into you ya may like another Yuri Manga Citrus I have all 10 volumes and reading 7 right now. I have more other manga tho I recently began saint seiya! but boy are they hard to get hands on now ugh.
As much as I want to get cheep manga, I often am restricted to choice of my local area and what they can provide. If there is a ecchi series I really want, I focus on supporting my comic book shop and get ecchi and hentai manga when it is available for pre order. Pace yourself and keep yourself within budget. Also plan your bedroom with a large manga collection in mind, keep yourself to your really want list, don't worry much about not getting everything you want. Also use the online manga sites where fan translated manga is often posted so you know what you are getting into if you find that series has a physical release.

My citys Library has 1-22 Volumes of Soul Eater
I have the complete set of soul eater :)
Dude I have Gurren Lagann 1-6 it’s got so expensive now I appreciate these volumes though shame there won’t be printing 7-10
So you kind of did complete Dragon Ball, at least the first part.
I have the Naruto series 1-72 but it's 3 in 1, except for the paper quality they're pretty good
I love and read romance manga more then i actually read shonen manga and I'm proud of it. A man can love cheesy romance manga too 😔
Can you give some tipps?
What would you recommend?
What manga would you recommend? I love RElife and Kaguya-sama and I need more! I'm already reading komi-san now
@@finn7013 you should read nisekoi i really liked it
Amen. My favorite manga is Maison Ikkoku
Must suck to not be able to walk out the street and just go in to a second hand store and just pick up a manga for 100-200 yen ($1-2)
Hi from Japan, kudos to you manga collectors (it's scary how much it cost outside of here) sorry for bad English, I've only been self studying it for 2 years
Ironically it still costs lest than comic books
@@drk355 yeah, American comics prices are insane here in Japan. I only collect one English comic series, it's called the adventure of tintin. My wallet cries everytime I buy one of it...
First off your English is amazing man truly. Tokyo Japan is the number one place I want to visit for at least a few weeks, I was thinking of saving up and going with my girlfriend next summer, would you recommend me to start trying to learn Japanese now and how hard do you think it is to learn compared to English?
@@hakobo2744 you don't need to learn Japanese to have fun in Japan. it depends on where u go but almost all places that people typically visit are very english-friendly (not sure if that's a word), just pick up some words that might come in handy during travel and you'll be good to go
But yeah I'd definitely recommend learning a new language (it doesn't necessarily have to be Japanese, just go with what u like)
As for "was English hard to learn", yeah it was pretty tough in the beginning but watching cartoons and slowly transitioning into books and movies helped a lot.
But they don't have any translated version in those stores right😢Even if I do visit Japan I can't buy those cheap mangas😢I won't be able to read them after all.
i know im late but i like the prices on right stuff
BUT
shipping is $30
and the manga is $11
on book depository the manga is $20 free shipping
so buying manga depends on country
i can relate so much being from Portugal
Right stuff sucks for the ones outside U.S
Bookdepositry is definitely your best bet, and of course your local imported bookstores too (and dont forget sales!)

CHAINSAWWWWWWW
I loved that you mentioned Facebook Marketplace. That place and Kijiji are my go-to for manga.
(Please note that I’m Canadian so the price for a normal size manga is 13$ here)
I found in a span of a month I found for 10$ I got 21 volumes and for 80$ I got 100 volumes.
Of course I had no idea what the series were and the 10$ ones smelled like weed for a few months, but I managed to find so many Tokyo Pop manga it was great.
I have a Facebook account but it doesn’t let me use it . Do you know how to fix it?
I hope you get plenty of subs. You deffenatly show the passion.
Thank you so much 😊

And how many years will it take to recover all that money again?
@@yasirchowdhury2713 what? It's not a waste of money. I love the series and want to collect all the manga
Maggot King556 No i’m not saying it’s a waste of money. I’m saying that manga is very expensive.
@@yasirchowdhury2713 money was spread out through the year so it wasn't all at once
My favorite manga is GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka, and that's been out of print for a looong time (even though the sequel manga is on going in Japan.)
So it being out of print doesn't mean it ain't good.
Here's my collection seeming as everyones doing it (also includes LN's:
Jojo's 1(1-3) and 2 (1-3)
Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction 1-4
Land Of The Lustrous 1-7
Junji Ito's Cat Diary (My first ever manga, someone just randomly gave it to me one day and it spiralled from there)

Arpeggio Of Blue Steel 1-5
Monogatari first/second season
Zaregoto 1-3

Was the claymore manga worth it and would u recommend it to me
@@sugeevan9171 I've read up to volume 18 of Claymore and so far I've enjoyed the story thus far. Lot of action and wide variety of monsters and slayers with different strengths and weaknesses. Kind of reminiscent to Berserk or the Witcher series.

You should never buy anything at full retail price.

With manga, that’s one of my concerns. If things go out of print then resellers are going to jack the price up and try to get people to spend 2x or more on the manga.
I agree that this community is very welcoming and helpful.

I started collecting 20th century boys a few years ago but never got round to properly reading it so I sold what I had to my friend and I’m planning to buy the perfect edition to go along with my Monster perfect edition.

Assassination Classroom: 1 & 2
My Hero Academia: 1

Hmmm I guess this is a tip, but for new collectors if you are planning on growing your manga making an excel file will help you. It helps you see if you finished collecting it, or what volumes your still missing. There are some youtubers who also do this, one of them that I know of is Himeka

-Black Lagoon, Vol. 1 - 11
-Dragon Ball (3-in-1), Vol. 1 - 14 (Vol. 1 - 42 / Complete)
-Fullmetal Alchemist - Complete Box Set (Vol. 1 - 27)
-Gangsta, Vol. 1 - 8
-Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Vol. 1 - 9
-Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Kanna's Daily Life, Vol. 1 - 6
As a side note, the 3-in-1 editions of Dragon Ball were, for me, probably the best way to go in terms of getting the full series at a good price. It cost me far less than the individual volumes or box sets would have.
I just started collecting, I'm glad I found this video. I'm currently collecting My Hero Academia, Samurai 8, and Boruto.
Just began my collection and this is really helping! Thanks
My collection:
Tokyo ghoul 1 and 2 (but it’s not even mine I got it for my sister for Christmas lol)
And bloom into you 1 and 2 coming soon in about 5 business days.
Thanks for this. Just getting back into the hobby. Trying to stick to only buying 2-3 series at a time, while reading and not getting a back log.
the place I buy my manga does 2 for 3 on all manga. it's amazing
What's the place
Where do you buy manga
@@fluffyssj2693 it's a place called forbidden planet, they have locations all over the uk.
Nerdy Sloth yeah I go there to, there comic prises are actually pretty reasonable too
As much as I want to get cheep manga, I often am restricted to choice of my local area and what they can provide.
This video is so helpful!! Thank you for these great tips :0.
And hell yeah, finally someone who knows Eden: It’s an Endless World :D. It’s probably one of my favorite manga ever!
I want to pick up the Erased manga to start because I love that anime but they completely botched the ending and left out many details in the manga
Update Ive picked up read the first 4/9 volumes (2 volumes in english) and I am really enjoying it, especially the details left out in the anime
Honestly erased should’ve been like 24 episodes
@@strawhatdac fr the pacing is all different like the first volume is only the first episode of the anime but volume 4 get to episode 8. Furthermore the last third is different
