I feel like it is ok, if you do not buy every manga that comes out. Like 5 months ago, I did not buy any manga because I need to get my bank account in order. Did it suck not being able to buy manga as it came out? Yes. Did I get my TBR pile down? Yes. Was I able to buy the manga that came out during that time, later? Yes. Buy what you can, when you want and when you are financially able to. Do not go into debt just because you want all of the manga in the world! Also good video!
Great way to put it man! I think to much of anything can be harmful in one way or another. I am in a position when I can do whatever and buy whatever anytime I want so I have to pull myself in mentally and get some patience. Your scenario was good cause if you have the money to buy something or not some patience can help. I also second never going into debt if you can help it but defff not for manga haha.
I used to buy a lot of manga, I had the space and income to do so, but I recently realised I don't have the time to read at the rate I buy. Around my job and family, I only have time to read 1 - 3 volumes a week, so I told myself I'm only allowed 10 - 20 volumes a month now. It's definitely an addiction, this was the first step for me in slowing down my buying habits.
Definitely needed this today! I was about to buy a new series even though I already have another series I started and haven't finished collecting/reading. I will choose patience. Great video!
Don't feel bad / hesitant about selling a series you don't absolutely love or won't read/reread! Freeing up space and money while simultaneously building a more curated collection is a great feeling!
Factssssssssssssssss and well said. I keep most everything atm cause I have the space and dont need the money. But if I did I would condense down to only the best of the best!
I'm glad I got into manga when I was still a student, I still am. I've overcome A LOT OF urges to place orders. I have limited money so I'm extra careful on what I buy. I only bought 5 volumes this year. I hope when I get a job, my spendings don't go out of control. I'm the only person that reads manga in my family. So sometimes it feels not worth it.
Hey dont downplay your hobby or what makes you happy. If you like it then keep on getting manga. But its good that you can control yourself and make rational decisions. So when you make more money you will at least be prepared to make more hard decisions if you need to.
Its been half a year I collected manga. And to be honest,it only filled up one shelf now. Im not overbuying it,I only collecting 6 series for now. I want to start a new series, but its kinda expensive. So Im also aware
Great video Sloth! When I first got into fashion I spent a lot of money trying to find my personal style. Over the course of a couple years I spent more than $4000 on clothes...and they weren't even of high quality so I would have a plethora of poor quality clothes I no longer wear taking up wardrobe space. This infuriated me. I knew I had a shopping addiction. Its been over a year now and I no longer find myself constantly searching online for new pieces to add to my wardrobe. Now I am very selective with my purchasing and go for quality over quantity. This is the same approach I take with manga. Within my first two weeks of collecting, I spent over $1000 - this was due to lack of patience and FOMO. I realized if I continued this habit I would relapse back into my bad spending habits. Now I have about 15 volumes on my TBR and intend to finish them before I start purchasing again. However, with the upcoming holiday sales I do see a challenge coming as the low prices and deals will really test my patience. Great video once again. I found it very informative and relatable. Everything in moderation. Cheers!
Thanks JOVELLER! It can be very addicting like with anything! Too much of anything can be bad for you. I still have to work on my fomo etc all the time!
Great vid, I think the tip about patience is incredibly important when collecting manga, I always make sure to look frequently for volumes I need and don't give in to scalper prices, if you keep looking or wait for a restock, there's no need to overpay, for example I picked up a JJK 0 yesterday for retail price after waiting 8 months. But it was worth the wait. Very helpful video!
Hey Morgan Bull! You are right on that! Patience is very important and while you can use your money how you want I think just taking your time and getting things not in a hurry is best most of the time. Only way to stop scalpers is to not buy from them!
I had to sell all of my manga during the pandemic. Now that my circumstances have changed I am rebuying my favorite series and unfortunately I’m doing a lot of impulse buying. Anytime I see berserk deluxe, gantz, and vagabond it’s an automatic no thought buy because of all of the insane shortages and scalping. I’m honestly in disbelief that I bought all of chainsaw man at one store. But yeah, this pandemic is really contributing to a lot of FOMO and people not thinking about their financial situation first
Helpful video! I wouldn't say I'm addicted to manga collecting perse but I just hope my collection doesn't become too huge too early down the road. I've only been collecting manga for only 2 years. Lol I'll just say I'm very passionate about manga. 😁📚
I recently got back into buying manga earlier this year and treated myself to some manga every month (about 2-4 volumes a month) the only exception was November with the release of the Demon Slayer Box Set. That said I was able to add 51 books to my collection. Like you said man, patience. Manga collecting is a marathon not a race.
Ever since I bought my first manga I just couldn't stop, to the point where I start dreaming of going to a bookstore/comic store buying a bunch of manga
I made a TBR list in a productivity app, which is really helpful to me - I see what I still have to read and when I finish a volume or series, I get some small virtual rewards. It helps me actually a lot more than just seeing the physical TBR pile next to my bed.
I never bothered buying a manga unless it becomes a favourite series because I dont see the value in buying random series that are highly likely to not be good
Very thought-provoking video today, Sloth! As someone who used to watch mostly BookTube videos and then slowly transitioned to mostly manga videos, this idea of a huge TBR list being frowned upon is something I had to get used to. On BookTube it’s generally seen as pretty normal to have 50 or 100 unread books on your shelves and I never felt judged for that, but now that I focus more on manga I feel way more pressure to pay attention to how many unread volumes I have on my shelves (which is honestly a huge chunk of my collection). I definitely agree that I don’t need to buy as much manga as I do, but I don’t think it’s a problem to have a good selection of unread manga to choose from at all times. With that said, I do still need to get my TBR down because it’s not at a manageable level at all right now lol. I’m not sure if I actually said anything with this comment but this video definitely made me think!
Great point on how it seems a big TBR can feel like a negative thing to some. I dont think in most cases it is. It depends on the person cause if your having fun and have no issues, regrets, stress, problems etc then do what you want at your own pace! I think we are in the same boat cause I like having a TBR but also like you I need it to be a bit more manageable lol. Def not judging anyone and hope more people stop if they are. Just want everyone to not stress and have fun!
@@TheMangaSloth Yeah I do want to improve a bit so I’m reading more per month than I’m buying, but I think my biggest problem will always just be a lack of space lol
Me who has 3 orders of manga on the way.. gonna arrive one by one, in December, January and February. My self control depends on how much money I have to spare for manga, and I'm a college student with no job. But I do read all I own. The packages that are about to come, I won't put them on the shelf yet just so I can focus on what I bought previously.
I definitely have this problem right now. I've been collecting for over 10 years and over the past 4 years I was in university I haven't been buying as much maybe 20 volumes a year but after a graduated and covid I've started to collect a lot and I've definitely become addicted. I think it's seeing the series I used to collect/ haven't finished go out of print and so many series going out of stock so fast kinda made me panic buy a bit? Now every week I usually get at least 1 or 2 volumes. My tbr pile has just gotten way too big
Fantastic video! Our family watched it (my kiddos loved the opening!) and think you really hit the nail on the head with patience. I confess I am one of those readers fearful of missing out and have just come to terms that I can't get all the physical titles I want at one time. It would be SO nice, but realistically, I know I'm not going to dive into all those series at once. Granted, it doesn't stop me from sometimes putting them all in a cart and seriously debating about it, but still. LOL! So, in many ways, I found you sharing encouraging for me personally in that my manga struggles (whether the same or different) I am not alone. I really second 1000% that patience is HARD! Thanks so much for sharing!
Oh yes patience is hard but it can help in all areas of our lives. I also sometimes fill out my cart and then study it and take things out at the end or save for later etc. I want all the things but then my mind say hay chill out on some of these for later lol. I may not be a great speaker and may ramble but if I helped in any way that makes me happy! Also glad the kids liked the beginning cause It was a last second add in haha.
Used to have a lot of manga, with less time to read and less space to store. So I just slowed down the purchases, then eventually stopped completely. Everything I've bought over the years I liked- so I sold everything that wasn't a fave. Then I sold faves that I wouldn't reread. Now all I have are my all-time faves that I'll continue to revisit without doubt. This was a good video though and will benefit many. Great stuff.
The worst is I put half my collection of Akame ga Kill in a box with a bunch of regular novels (I’ve collected novels since I was a child only recently started collecting manga). I didn’t realize that some of the novels got bent in the box, so half of my collection got bent so badly it’s unreadable. $100 worth of manga down the drain. Plus like half of the manga I bought in October weren’t worth keeping, so…I found some great gems this month though.
oooooooffffffffff sorry to hear about the damaged stuff that stinks. Make sure you do some research if you can to help getting manga you know you will enjoy!
This year ive made it a goal to collect/read more manga and try to complete some of incomplete mangas ive had in my collections for the most part its been successful but there are some series i might not ever be able to complete anytime soon since they are out of print. My biggest regrets were waiting too long or forgetting to keep up with certain mangas. Its stressful sometimes but im happy for the most part when it comes to manga collecting/reading. Patience does pay off but i think it applies to the more popular mangas when theres mangas that arent as popular the niche things thats when I think it would be wise to not wait too long especially with how competitive things have been nowadays.
Well said! I agree with this big time. This is why for some series I keep buying them even when I have not started or read much of them. Obviously patience is key and very important BUT if they wont get reprinted or not for many years etc then its good to pony up and get them sometimes! You are right especially nowadays with how crazy the market for manga is.
@@TheMangaSloth truuu. Also this print shortage of manga has kept me from buying books left and right. Otherwise I probably would have already bought all the Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man books I could get my hands on.
I really need to go through my collection & sell off some of them. I have been collecting since I was a kid (bought my first volume in 2005 I think) & as much as I hate to admit it, I have out grown some series. I just need to get more comfortable selling online in general.
Yeah I know what you mean outgrowing series I have went thru that also. I get where selling online can be tough sometimes. If you want a easy place to sell you can use my discord or other mangatuber discords
Nice video, im new to manga. Finished OG higurashi when they cry, working on gou/meguri. Got danganronpa 1 and 2 as well as death note in tbr. Luckily i dont want to get anything new until i finish what i have
Yoooo welcome to manga! Its a big world with TONS of things you will love. Finishing what you start is a great idea! Make sure you are not afraid to drop things though if you are not feeling them!
great vid! definitely felt the fomo bad in july when i bought over 160 volumes in the span of 3 weeks, however tho since then aside from my demon slayer box set ive probably bought max 10 vols a month from sept til now (august was a scary month haha) but ive also been hanging onto some series where im like"its not the best thing in the world but ill give it another shot" but after hearing what you had to say i definitely feel like l have no problems with getting rid of those volumes now. Thank you for the inspiration and courage!
Yeah I hear ya its tough sometimes to just pass on a mid manga and say " there is better more exciting stuff than this atm" I get the fomo sometimes too so dont be too hard on yourself!
I’ve been gradually collecting for almost 15 years now. It’s been a slow grind due to space, money and time. My biggest limiting factor is that I’m a complesionist, meaning I need to have the entire set of a series or it will 100% bother me which leave me two options, buy the entire series or don’t buy at all. Seems a bit extreme but for me, it works.
Thanks for the video I have maybe around 60+ manga/light novels small collection I know I usually try to keep a manga budget of $100-200 a month if there's anything I might like but I usually do have self control when buying a series I usually don't buy a series that I think I might enjoy or because it might be popular like demon slayer, jojo, Tokyo ghoul etc... no disrespect to anyone who enjoys those series only manga I went in blind without knowing really anything was kingdom of z and crueler than dead cause I needed something similar to Highschool of the dead or just a zombie manga in general only manga I'm really for waiting for to come back in stock is the claymore box set the price of it on eBay is absurd sorry for the long post good vid 👍
Same here man! I only buy manga I've read before or if they share very similar themes in other works I thoroughly enjoyed. JOJO has to be my fav series but I can't justify spending that much money collecting all the volumes...just perhaps getting Steel Ball Run physical would be on my list, if it EVER comes to the west LOL
Hey you go at your own pace and do what you want! As long as your having fun and there are no issues then its no prob! But make sure you try out series if you think you will like them cause then well you would like them haha.
@@joveller1522 I only have read the first part of jojo (manga) I have seen most of the parts of jojo (anime) tho it's one of those things were I enjoyed the anime but I really don't feel it's necessary for me to buy the manga for it as far as justifying buying it Im not one to talk since I've bought basically everything that is available for goblin slayer from the light novels and manga of the main series to the prequel series as well and blu rays

I agree and disagree to a extent. Like I said blind buying is great and I like it. But doing it for everything all the time can sometimes not be great. I prob will never stop blind buying but for some it may help to reel it back a bit.
Its a good idea not to buy big series like something with more then 12 volumes. I alo reccomend just buying the volumes after watching the anime so you don't spend as much
Im 13 and i start asking my mom for manga but i usually just call them books because she probably doesnt know what it is, and then i show her what books i want and sometimes askes me "why do you want all these books anyways, cant you just get them from school". But of course i don't want to ask to much so i limit myself to about 5 manga per month. But when i get a job im spending all my money on mostly series i think are 10/10 like jjk or chainsaw man
Hey I used to be a younger sloth and it was hard getting the parents to get me stuff I liked. They though it was weird lol. Hope you can get more when you get a job and more cool stuff!
I mostly just buy manga of anime that I loved as appreciation and because i want to physically own it. Just recently though I've been going on instinct and buying bulks of manga and light novels. Now I'm trying to rein myself in and control my finger from buying more. And committing myself to reading what I have at the moment.
Hey I am also new to manga but the problem with me is that I have random volumes of my favourite series, and now I am thinking that should I buy box sets or omnibus to complete my collection. What should I do ?
And bro I have been collecting dragon ball 3in1 I have till vol 10 , so I am thinking of collecting itin omnibus continuously, because I can’t find the box sets of Dbz . Am I doing right ? (Plus thanks for the info above)
What's the limit to how many series you can collect at once cuz I am collecting 3 series (FOTNS, JoJo and Guengsi) and I want to start a new one. ( Dai Dark)
Well its all up to you and what you can handle! Like I said I have a zillion ongoing series at the moment so it depends on you. Dai dark I think is a slower print so it may work out since its not coming out very fast.
Well I dont agree if its called "addiction" cause thats when its crossing some lines. Too much of anything is bad. BUT I think I know what your saying and I would agree!
Your Journey is over go home.................. jkjk go on your journey as fast as you want! Just want people to have less and less regrets and stress and struggles! As long as your having fun and enjoying yourself dont stop at all haha
Is the rightstuf sale on yet?? I’m just patiently waiting for it to go live before I go shopping. I also still need bookshelves which honestly should be my first purchase ^^;;;
When you have to build another bookcase, then you might start asking yourself questions. For a grade school or highschooler, the father might rein in the $$ and say, I am not building another book case.

*reads title after buying the first 3 volumes of Parasyte*……no
Hey if your having fun keep going! Also parasyte is great!
If it works then it works! Do what you like! I am sorta the same way. If I like something I will but the rest asap to have etc.
The thing that’s bothering me the most is shelf space. Lol I’m all out!
Oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I need shelf space like crayyyyyyyyyy
I just love your style! Thanks for making me smile and make my day and is can relate to the tbr lol
Thx a lot HW. You wouldint happen to be a Santa that is secret for me????

Blind buying is fun trying beforehand sours my experience
I agree and disagree to a extent. Like I said blind buying is great and I like it. But doing it for everything all the time can sometimes not be great. I prob will never stop blind buying but for some it may help to reel it back a bit.
Its a good idea not to buy big series like something with more then 12 volumes. I alo reccomend just buying the volumes after watching the anime so you don't spend as much
I like longer series so I love picking up vol 1 of a long series and see if I like it!
I just bought my first manga and it was the first box for one piece! I’m beyond exited
Yoooo awesome 👌
oh, it's easy to chill out when youre a sloth, there is so many good mangers out there that me want...now 😬
Well it has not been that easy haha. I agree there is just so much good stuff out there!
And committing myself to reading what I have at the moment.
good idea!
Hey I am also new to manga but the problem with me is that I have random volumes of my favourite series, and now I am thinking that should I buy box sets or omnibus to complete my collection. What should I do ?
If you want the complete series of something that has a box set then You should def get a box set!
Well ur right , so what are the best in budget box sets I could buy (in Shonen)
Well cheapest are prob CSM MHA and then the rest are all around the same after that
Ok thank you 😁
And bro I have been collecting dragon ball 3in1 I have till vol 10 , so I am thinking of collecting itin omnibus continuously, because I can’t find the box sets of Dbz .
But but but.... I need manga 😫 well I guess I have to listen to the manga sloth.
But....but........but....... I was just gonna send you the money to buy all the manga for me so I could pretend to buy less 😣
@@TheMangaSloth ok deal 😁👍
I also want to collect Mangas that i like to read, not just for the sake of collecting
Best way to do it!
@@TheMangaSloth i made a list for that too
I allow myself to spend $20 a week on my hobbies In order to make sure I still have money to drive for work and eat. 2 volumes a week
Getting to work and eating are important! So good idea with budgeting!
Thx for your videos you are so positive and make my day better
I'm so glad! I try to keep things chill for anyone new and anyone who has been around manga for a long time!
I have a TBR trolley, its three layers high
I have to get a fleet of trolleys and then a personal train to pull them around lol
Great video bro!
Thx bro!
Addiction can be good
Well I dont agree if its called "addiction" cause thats when its crossing some lines. Too much of anything is bad. BUT I think I know what your saying and I would agree!
Why did qatching 2 mins of this vid made me straight away sub?
idk man!
How Much do you think you spent on manga in a whole
Lets see def more than $10 but prob less than $100k
dam@@TheMangaSloth
I would say, Mr. Gonzales that you have a worrying amount of manga
ima need more
Why are you telling me to stop when my journeys just begun?
Your Journey is over go home.................. jkjk go on your journey as fast as you want! Just want people to have less and less regrets and stress and struggles! As long as your having fun and enjoying yourself dont stop at all haha
Trying to convince to buy manga is like trying to stop a train

Shelf and box set envy, perhaps?

When you have to build another bookcase, then you might start asking yourself questions. For a grade school or highschooler, the father might rein in the $$ and say, I am not building another book case.
I made a list of a limited number of manga series that I can collect. Any other manga I am not allowed to buy.
Lists help and thats a good idea
So what is a western 40 year couple to do to get harem/romance but don't want censored manga.
You are looking for manga recommendations?
@@TheMangaSloth She wants ecchi anime English dubbed thats uncensored ecchi, and shes priority, and I looking dragonball z uncensored manga, which shows things vegeta flipping people off like he did in freezer saga.
