Being more selective and dropping series are the main pieces of advice I try to give to others. Personally to me nowadays downsizing my collection feels just as good as adding things to it now! And is especially nice to get some money and space back as well. Totally valid point though about getting rid of stuff and then potentially regretting it later and wanting to go back to it but I just know its bound to happen sometimes as we're gonna regret getting rid of certain stuff but I'm not gonna let that stop me from getting rid of things because I know most of it I likely won't miss. And also buying it again can feel nice too!
Agree been doing the same it was hard at the beginning to get rid of stuff but you have to be honest with yourself are you enjoying the manga? Are you ever gonna read it again? Then make space for new manga you'll enjoy
I have discovered that I need to go to a bookstore and see the manga. I have bought manga on the advise of a manga tuber and been very disappointed, realizing that it’s difficult to communicate tastes. I am learning more about my own tastes. Thank you for the video.
This video tells me that i overthink things when purchasing manga 😂. Like I'm selective when it comes to manga. I'm the type of person that would go to the store and see a manga series that interests me and reads the synopsis to see it's in my taste. The struggles in manga collecting are on point in this vid. But i would say ppl should be more diverse in collecting series. Don't be afraid to assume that x series will be trash. What matters is that u as a person enjoys it or not. And thats what makes your collection and opinions special.
Exactly so many people were saying the manga Asadora is bad I picked it up read it loved it! Read the manga for yourself! To see if is good don’t always take people word for it
There are some highly praised things that I don't like or feel like they are overrated, but if someone else likes them, good for them, as you said in the video, if everyone had the same opinion, we would learn less things. I always wanted to have a manga collection, but I didn't have the space, I only have around 40 volumes from when I was young. I will have my own space relatively soon, so I decided to make a list of mangas that I want to collect, because I won't have infinite space, or money, and It's really hard deciding what to add to the list. I made some rules for myself, like having to read at least the first 5 volumes online before deciding, be extremely wary of mangas with irregular releases or on hiatus, or being extremely picky with mangas that are less than 8/10 for me, which would have filtered some of the mangas that I already have, but I find it really hard to just stop collecting some of them, because I still like them, even if they are not as worth it as others.
I've kind of always prided me in the fact that i don't just jump on to titles just because they're being hyped. I've always been good with quickly figuring out what I like in terms of story, character design, art style etc. But I think as collectors we learn from mistakes such as impulse buying or getting into the hype of something then later regretting it because now it's no longer interesting and so forth. I collected and read superhero comics for many years and let me tell you have a lot of stuff that i regret spending money but I don't get rid of it because It's a hassle and I'm lazy lol. So when I started buying manga physically instead of reading them on online, I already had it in my head well I already know what i like and what I want to buy which is why i think my collection isn't huge like most collections I see here on UA-cam. I mean your collection is easily much bigger than mine. lol.
Truly remarkable way of collecting manga or books. Going off of straight hype and often times not even buying a volume 1 to see whatsup. Hilarious approach that surely leads to some trash box sets and what not ending up on your shelf.
i see so many youtubers doing this shit and its so funny to me. "so this next series in my collection is one i havent read but i bought the entire 40 volume box set because my friend said its good and i think the covers are pretty"
@@vivilover9409 That is something I will never do. I'm working with very limited space so I don't have the luxury of beign able to buy something because I like the covers but I will never read it.
I don’t consider myself a collector I’m just getting into buying manga books but I will say this I like buying manga that I’m actually interested in I don’t care if it’s popular or not. Im very opened minded and will always give a series a chance to at least see if I like it. Also I think it’s important to take your time wit manga reading you don’t have binge a whole series in one night lol I’m a slow reader because I like to be invested in these stories And not rush them guys it’s not a race to see who finish a series the fastest we spend all this money on these books take your time enjoy them same with collecting you don’t have to buy everything at once. Work up to it build slowly and let your collection get bigger over time
From the beginning I was an anime lover and recently I also started to like read and collecting manga. I have a small collection such as Monster, Oshi no Ko, Uzumaki, Sakamoto Days, Blood On the Track. I'm a selective person, so manga that I definitely like will be a collection and also manga that I haven't watched or don't have an anime adaptation.
Honestly one of the things that helped me stop buying after covid was the fact that a lot of these series can be found online in one way or another. I sold all my single volumes of MHA before the box set arrived and when I found they were all Italy prints I was a bit upset. I ended up returning it and realizing that if I really want to read MHA I can do so on VIZ/Shonen Jump until they release a collected version I like. Still bought the OP box set 4 and plan to buy the 5th assuming there is no quality issues etc.
I rented physical manga too read throughout elementary school to uni. Those books were old, bootlegged, and occasionally incomplete. My childhood friend was also super into manga. We usually split the rental fee. Now as an adult I really subscribe to a minimalist life style. But luckily my friend has settled down, bought a nice big house and had a son. So while i stick to reading manga online nowadays, I buy manga collections for my friend's son. Best of both worlds.
It’s a very nice hobby, I do enjoy reading novels and graphic novels and art books myself, I’m so happy the manga community recognizes the importance of respect of one’s opinion and hobby and understands the importance of the tangible, meaningful art that is books 📚
If I had it my way, I’d have started collecting 2012-2013 after my friend introduced me to Manga with ‘Wolf Children.’ For whatever reason though, I was too nervous to speak up about it, so I went years watching others enjoy the hobby. 2020 came around and like others gave me a lot of time to think and I realized that the fear of collecting was keeping me back from something that would make me happy. So now I’ve only been collecting since 2021, and mine is comparatively small. I always heard stories of people reading manga as it was still publishing only for them to hate how it ended and having wasted a ton of money on it. So that has a huge impact on how I collect too. But I also decided to be brave with that and took a chance, reading some manga on pirated sites first before deciding on collecting. Currently, I have taken a chance on: The Girl From the Other Side, Dungeon Meshi, Land of the Lustrous, Witch Hat Atelier, Gokurakugai, Alpi the Soul Sender. All of them read online, some I already have a few physical copies of, and most of them haven’t finished their story yet. But I adore all of them. I also have some of Junji Ito’s works and have started collecting Vampire Hunter. Like you said about ones going out of print, I had one day hoped to collect Trigun Maximum. I adored the original anime and was quite pleased with the reboot so it was a devastating shock to hear that about halfway through the reboot airing, the physical copies were announced to go out of print. A strange decision especially since it’s supposed to get a season two and was quite well received.
My biggest issue is price, it's so expensive sometimes, my second issue is when a serise I really like doesn't end, it just keeps going and going and eventually you have to lookat it and say that's enough
There’s nothing that infuriates me more than the people who shit on others favorite series. That’s why I don’t use Twitter 😂, outside of it at least it’s not too too bad. I just don’t get it though, sure there’s also series I don’t enjoy, but there’s always a way to phrase things so that it’s not so negative. “I didn’t really connect with this series and it’s characters” instead of “yeah I thought it was total crap, it sucked” just goes such a long way and it’s really not hard to do... Great video as always man!
Absolutely agree, and you nailed it phrasing is key when talking about things that maybe didn't land for you because then you can learned why it landed for somebody else.
I feel like I generally have a pretty good sense of which manga I will like and which one I won't. Even then, when it comes to completely dropping a manga series I'd been reading, it's usually been cause I sorta just... slowly lose interest in it and not necessarily because I came to actually dislike it. Honestly, I think that's why I don't exactly... feel bad about some of it taking up space on my shelf? It probably comes off as a bit weird, but I like the idea of, despite not following X or Y series through to its end, still having those 3-4 volumes up there on the shelf, even if they're just a reminder that I gave the series a try and that was that.
I have my little collection of about 17 complete manga series, and I'm at a point where I'm pretty content with what I have. The OOP manga was definitely the biggest struggle for me, also collecting complete series that are long running. It was 2 years of research before I was able to get a $500 deal for all the original single volume Inuyasha manga. And another year of waiting for a good deal on Mars. That was my most challenging thing, simply because my middle school and high school library is where I really got into manga. But a majority of what I read were OOP series. So a bulk of my collection was a struggle to get, but I'm proud that I was able to save up enough and was patient enough to complete it. Other series might come around and catch my interest, but after just recently tracking down a good deal for Sand Chronicles, I think my OOP hunting days are over. I have everything I need. 😂
Great video! I agree that alot people get into a series just because many people are hyping it up. That's not to say that the series isn't good... but I wish people would give less popular series a shot. And I agree that people have different tastes and that's OK! Everyone is different so it would only make sense that everyone would like different series! I guess I'll use this opportunity to list some of my less popular (or less talked about) favorite series, lol : Mermaid Boys, No Longer Heroine, My Boy, Cinderella Closet, Choujin X, Daytime Shooting Star, Absolute Boyfriend, Girl Got Game, Black Torch, Noragami, Love Me Love Me Not, My Special One, Oresama Teacher, and Shortcake cake. Also some great ones that are only digital for now that I wish would get english physical releases soon: the Walls Between Us, We Must Never Fall in Love, Love that's an Understatement, My Dear Detective, the Story of Our Unlikely Love, and Yamaguchi kun isn't so Bad. I'm very glad Nina the Stary Bride is getting released physically this month!! Just an FYI, I'm mostly into action, romance, comedy and slice of life. So if you're into those genres, I suggest these series. ^-^
I feel you brother. Just be happy it wasn't something expensive like fountain pens or God forbid mechanical watches but looking at your collection same difference lol.
I don’t plan to get rid of anything I regret buying, a foolish decision, but it’s history. I like to look back at my mistakes and my grievances(ofc accomplishments) as I throw another fresh, unyellowed set of manga, on the shelf. Gonna have to put the collection on hold after this second shelf is filled however… goodness.
If I like the anime I know I will love the manga. Uzamaki, Bezerk, Trigun, ETC. I like collecting slow and having a collection I have read unlike my game collection back log sheesh.
my rule of thumb when it come to manga collection, I only buy what I read :) so far my collection is one piece and berserk deluxe edition. I plan to buy bleach, naruto, jojo, fullmetal alchemist, vinland and monster. if i can fin it Candy Candy and Rose of Versaille.
I actually prefer manga shopping in person, the store near me does 3 for 2 on manga so I always feel like I’m getting a deal lol, also I like being able to physically see and touch a volume before I buy, even if it is more expensive it’s worth it for me
The one series I want to own is GANTZ but those singles are outrageous in price. The omnibuses look horrendous imo and I hope one day Dark Horse makes a deluxe like berserk, hellsing and the new one coming out Trigun…would love to own Gantz
My issue is I like something and I start spending on everything of that franchise... Like Nier I went a little extra there getting the White Version Getting the OSTs even though they are the same exact tracks but altered somehow like orchestra or 8 bit or piano lol then there are the light novels that were good. It started with a game and I ended up getting other stuff for it, I even tried for the pilot DIY kit but was missing pieces so I returned it. Its the same for other games like I pre ordered Horizon Zero Dawn back in the day, loved it got artbook for it, nice book pages filled completely, got the Thunderjaw Pop, misssed out on the Watcher Pop. This is just for gaming... now for Anime and Manga on the other hand... Novels Figures Artbooks OSTs Trading Cards... theres so much merch out there I wish the West had more anime/manga Japanese merch and services like the cafes spas hotels amusment parks with anime themes. So yes this is an expensive hobby and may end up regretting some stuff or thinking other stuff isnt worth it... plus the space...
The way I've started is I'll get the first volume of something and read it if I loved it I'll keep collecting it, if not I've just got the first volume no big deal, so far I've got the entirety of chainsaw man, might read Death Note next
I'm just now seeing this video, hahaha. But the one thing I hate about manga collecting is when I really enjoy a series, and then it falls off, and I completely lose interest. Cause by that point I'm already X amount of volumes in, and I feel like I HAVE to complete the story. Examples being My Hero and Jujutsu Kaisen, which I loved a ton! But their stories started going to shit, and I'm like, "Okay great, I can either stop collecting and have an incomplete set OR satisfy the completionist in me and finish the story and maybe sell it later." So I definitely read online as much as possible before I decide to buy. But I've been slowly collecting since 2016, and there are some series that I adore that I always want to keep. I'm currently getting through and reading everything I have. It will take a while, but I'm slowly making progress.
I definitely need to be selective when i start collecting. I'm sharing a room with my sister and I only have 1.5 bookshelf worth of space. Also I will never buy a manga that I have not read yet or I know that I won't read it again. For exemple I will never buy Jujutsu Kaisen in manga format. I like the anime and I have read the manga as well but it's a manga that I would not want to reread every year.
I know this video is old, but I think everyone go through these problems. Still, I think if there's a series you don't enjoy, no matter how many volumes you have or you finish it, I think it's not good mentally to keep things you don't enjoy because reading is very time consuming, and why keep reading a series if you don't like it? I do think it's good to collect series you fear is going to go OOP, but I don't think you should get it if you don't think you'll like it. Everyone have different tastes like you mentioned, and there are some things which a lot of people like, which I don't don't. But it is what it is and I still think the collection we have should be as personal as possible with no regrets.
I just collect manga that i would read again , i like to see my collection and love every single series , if i fell like I wouldn't reed it again I just sold it
Wait.. so You actually READ Your manga?! :O Just kiddin' ;P but I didn't read about 50% of my collection, but I don't mind that, 'cause my library is my happy and calming space. I just love to sit there and watch my manga.
I have started to separate the hobbies. Reading the story, and collecting the physical object are different activities. I try to be zero sum. If i collect more, something else i dont care about has to go.
I've always been the one who says why would I buy a manga if I can just find it online but after opening a single physical copy it all changed. Saving your own money and buying a story you like , seeing the good cover art in your room displayed, taking care of your books and rearranging from time to time. It's good but yeah it needs investment and space
I was the same I collected everything and anything, getting series blindly or because someone said it's good. I got high rise invasion and got it all before reading it didn't like the first Omni I thought now I've bought it I might as well finish it. It didn't get better and the ending annoyed me so I sold it but I feel all that time I wasted collecting it and reading it and money I spent chasing it. Now I'm more selective in what I collect I give a series 3 volume limit to get me into it. I'll get 3 if I don't like it I drop it. I don't go chasing the "best" manga. I went to travelling man (UK based company) they had a warehouse clearance and I bought stupid amounts then months later I went they was getting rid of them for a reason I got loads of volumes from series I don't want to collect. I ended up giving most of them away losing money on them
I have been collecting comic books since i was in junior high (2003). I already make all those mistakes. First of all you need to determine what kind of collector you are. If you are a person that just collect everything and you have unlimited money, go ahead. But for me personally my current collection are all stuff that i have finished reading. And i want to read again in it's best condition. If you don't want to reread that title don't buy it. This is the simple rule of thumb for me in collecting physical media.
I love figuring out how to store and display my manga. By the way do you have a discord channel would be fun to interact with the community. Maybe get one started with GTP channel since you guys have a similar audience.
I don’t have a discord channel, haven’t figured that part out yet but would love to get one started one day, because yeah it would be super fun to interact that way
The problem I see with a lot of manga youtubers is they are far more concerned with how much they have instead of do they actually like manga. Also a lot people seem to keep buying volumes for series they don’t like.
I have been hesitating on collecting Berserk for years and no matter which edition I invest in, I would be losing out whether it be price or storage. 😔
for me i want to mostly collect anime blurays but bc of the way the one piece anime is with its pacing and filler, manga makes more sense. but zoros name being zolo in the manga still bothers me. if one piece gets reprinted once it ends, with his name fixed, ill go insane
I don't want to be rude, but please increase your energy or volume cause I can't hear you without headphones and not everyone can be with their headphones on for 24/7 yk... Just a request ❤
No worries that is completely valid, Will definitely work on that, I’ve been trying to figure out audio for awhile now, hopefully I can try to improve it in future videos, thanks for letting me know!
@@DanielPeppersQuick chime in caus I have to do way too much audio editing for my own vids lol. If you want a decent and fairly easy volume boost, you’ll want to check if your video editing software has a Limiter in the audio effects, or get something like audacity that might have a Limiter effect in it, that’s all you need to focus on. It might have a few controls that are harder to understand at first glance but it’s nothing a 5-10 min UA-cam vid can’t teach you. Or if you ever have specific audio questions feel free to hit me up if you want, I’m not a professional or anything but I did have to learn quite a bit to make music related vids. Good luck! ✌️
Watches the video an hour after getting 4 volumes of Noragami, box set of Nausicaa, and a bunch of Log Horizon light novels delivered. Hilarious. I'm not a *collector* , just an idiot who likes to have their actual favourite things completed. It just sometimes snowballs. I was like "I need all Ito Junji manga that comes out in English..!" which was *TRUE* for about 2 years. Then the new Soichi story collection came out few months back. I hate those stories. So, no. Not buying that. EVER. I would never buy a series that I didn't enjoy the story and/or art style of.

Its such a huge bummer to see you talking about how much of your collection you haven’t read. If I had a full set of Lone Wolf & Cub I’d read that shit. I hope you read them or sell them to someone who would. Otherwise good video. I don’t intend this to be a hostile comment.
Coming from someone who’s been involved in comics his whole life manga collecting is extremely weird. People don’t really seem to care about rarity and condition that much, they just enjoy seeing a lot of books. I usually have around 1000 comics but only 25 in my personal collection. Everything else gets sold and used to increase the value of what’s in my PC. Manga is a depreciating asset for the most part.
Sure it's surface level but there are so many people who fall into these traps when collecting manga. I think the aim of this video was just to inform new manga collectors about the cons of the hobby, and to spark a discussion in comments. You can't really fault him for not attempting to psychoanalyze manga collectors and referencing studies on consumerism when that wasn't his intention in the first place.
As a person with not the biggest place, I don’t like the amount of space this hobby can take up 😢
So True! Displaying your manga and organizing the collection is a really fun part of the hobby, so space is definitely an issue

It's even worse when you have another hobby that takes up space

Even then, when it comes to completely dropping a manga series I'd been reading, it's usually been cause I sorta just... slowly lose interest in it and not necessarily because I came to actually dislike it. Honestly, I think that's why I don't exactly... feel bad about some of it taking up space on my shelf? It probably comes off as a bit weird, but I like the idea of, despite not following X or Y series through to its end, still having those 3-4 volumes up there on the shelf, even if they're just a reminder that I gave the series a try and that was that.
Greatest content to listen to on the way home from work after a long day.
Wow man… Thank you for the kind words!
just do what most of us do, only keep what you'd re-read
You're points are spot on. Everyone collecting manga goes through those points.
I pre-order both trigun manga hardcovers can't wait just finished blade of immortal and ptsd radio ❤️
Im a musician, within the effects pedal that....I LOVE.
But we go crazy with Overdrives,fuzz,etd... its never gonna end
Good video bro. I've also started my manga collection 😃
Thanks man! That's awesome, hope you enjoy the journey of building your own collection!
I actually prefer manga shopping in person, the store near me does 3 for 2 on manga so I always feel like I’m getting a deal lol, also I like being able to physically see and touch a volume before I buy, even if it is more expensive it’s worth it for me
Being scared of something going out of print or the series never getting finished is so real.
Amazing video 😄
So yes this is an expensive hobby and may end up regretting some stuff or thinking other stuff isnt worth it... plus the space...
really awesome videos you been putting out lately. keep up the good work
Thank You!
Holy shit haha thats wonderful my dress up darling❤❤❤❤.
I hyper rationalize from some truana in the past.
That moment was awesome ya a sub
Inspiring video I feel tingly
Miss manga anthology magazines. Had articles and options with the demograpic targets. Get some titles along with popular titles
I've always been the one who says why would I buy a manga if I can just find it online but after opening a single physical copy it all changed. Saving your own money and buying a story you like , seeing the good cover art in your room displayed, taking care of your books and rearranging from time to time. It's good but yeah it needs investment and space
Great content. 🤙🏽
I'm damn proud of my Rent-a-Girlfrield collection
I love figuring out how to store and display my manga. By the way do you have a discord channel would be fun to interact with the community. Maybe get one started with GTP channel since you guys have a similar audience.
I don’t have a discord channel, haven’t figured that part out yet but would love to get one started one day, because yeah it would be super fun to interact that way
@DanielPeppers I sent you the how to link on your Instagram
I can take screen shots if you don't want to click the link
No worries, I’ll look into it, when I get a few minutes, Thanks!
I've started collecting berserk. I only have 5 books but I will keep buying them 😍
Oh hell nahhh Demon Slayer is good - I can get behind My Hero though dang
for me i want to mostly collect anime blurays but bc of the way the one piece anime is with its pacing and filler, manga makes more sense. but zoros name being zolo in the manga still bothers me. if one piece gets reprinted once it ends, with his name fixed, ill go insane
hoping the wit remake with fixed pacing gets blurays
I know this is out of topic but while I was watching this video I was like : *imagine one day your house burns down with all the manga*
Good luck! ✌️
Do you know where I can sell manga because I have thought of decreasing my collection
Finding stores to buy them is the worst thing
Wait! Is my hero and demon slayer really , ehh manga. I’m a new collector but I’ve watched anime all my life, I like manga like csm nd jjk so far but I wanted to start collected both my hero nd demon slayer are they really not worth it early one ?
Where did you get those black shelves in the background?
The black floating shelves are from Amazon and the black bookshelves are from Target
BRO! Demon slayer and MHA are my favorite mangas!
No offense but you should probably read more series
@@nrreno I'm also ready jjk and spy x family.
@@martinfamily8018 you should read a lot more, im not gonna judge your tastes you can like what you like but all of those series are very mediocre
@@nrreno do you have any suggestions?
@@martinfamily8018 Berserk and Kokou no hito are my two favorite series, id also recommend vinland saga, vagabond and my all time favorite - jojos bizzare adventures
Why dont they add the digital downloads to purchase manga. This is getting upsurd.
Is there a way to know if a series is just out print or going out of print?
Elitism can ruin any fandom of any hobbie I respect that 14:23 14:24
What websites have good deals?
I think you can catch a good Buy 2 Get 1 Free on places like Books and million or Barnes and Noble, Amazon has had some pretty good deals on Boxsets in the Past, and CrunchyRoll Store has pretty Much kept up with RightStufAnime pricing since they bought that website
@@DanielPeppers how long does the book a million 15% off code last? I got it from spinning the wheel for being a new customer but when I move from phone to computer it doesn't show it. I have the code on my phone will it work if I enter it or no?
@@techyougo I have not experienced that but I believe that code SHOULD work when you enter it...Not sure how long the code last but I would think at least a week if not a month
Donate what you don’t want to the library. Can rent it later
I liked then unliked then re liked at the end because you said you didn't like berserk. 😢
Its such a huge bummer to see you talking about how much of your collection you haven’t read. If I had a full set of Lone Wolf & Cub I’d read that shit. I hope you read them or sell them to someone who would. Otherwise good video. I don’t intend this to be a hostile comment.
i think the manga community can be bad, but at least its not as bad as the anime community!
i have a feeling the he is from Michigan or is that just me?
Woof
Did u really just say Berserk is trash?
This is such a poignant video. Excellent gripes and critiques of a hobby.
*The worst thing is that they are mostly paperbacks🧐*
Coming from someone who’s been involved in comics his whole life manga collecting is extremely weird. People don’t really seem to care about rarity and condition that much, they just enjoy seeing a lot of books. I usually have around 1000 comics but only 25 in my personal collection. Everything else gets sold and used to increase the value of what’s in my PC. Manga is a depreciating asset for the most part.
The solution to basically all of your problems is bitcoin. The sooner you learn about it, the better off you will be. Take care.
This was the most surface level stuff acting like it somehow had depth.
