I prefer the joycons. Not only can you actually reach every button no matter what position you're holding it in (unlike the Wiimote), but the right one has an analog stick (unlike the Wiimote) and the left one has more buttons (unlike the nunchuck). Worse gyro and smaller size is an ok sacrifice.
I feel like I’m one of the few who doesn’t mind the Joy-Con gyro pointer. It absolutely goes off-sync, but a simple press of a button to re-center it makes that a non-issue IMO. I played all of Pikmin 3 Deluxe & Mario Galaxy with that pointer & had a blast. My only issue is if they don’t make the re-center button obvious, like in (coincidentally) Pikmin 3 Deluxe. It’s bizarre & not obvious how the game replaces an existing button (R, for swapping Pikmin one direction) to let you re-center.
Funny you mention the "button gets pressed and it continuosly tries to pair while draining the battery" only for wii motes, because in my experience that definitely happens with joycons too, if you for some reason carry them outside of a case they WILL drain, and it happens to the pro controller too, which doesnt really have usual cases to carry them so its worse. That is one thing that the ps4 controller did right (dont have ps5 to know how it is with that), it turns on only with the home button so you cant accidentally drain it like that.
So an interesting tidbit is actually the sensor bar is very dumb. It’s essentially just two infrared LEDs that are constantly powered the true sensor bar is actually in the top of the WII remote it just uses the infrared LEDs as a reference point.
I love joycons, but my one problem with them is how games that use B as a primary button lead to constantly pushing your finger against the right control stick
Maybe I'm crazy, but I FAR prefer manual resetting of the gyro compared to a sensor bar doing it (potentially incorrectly) constantly of its own accord. The gyros are more than good enough to stay relatively in sync unless you make a long series of sharp motions, after which you kinda just get muscle memory to reset the gyro. Much better than the sensor bar randomly spitzing out and setting the gyro slightly off constantly. So sure, when everything works perfectly the wiimote motion is better, but I'd take my joycons with manual reset any day.
I'm no controller designer here, so idk if it is possible, but i always thought that you could put the IR Camera on the "R AND L" button of the joycons and do what Scott said, make the switch double as a Sensor bar, and Boom, you got yourself two pointer action and better Wii Ports. Sure, you will lose 2 Trigger buttons (the smaller ones) but you would gain 4 extra buttons: The SL/SR on each Joycon. But that was just the idea i had the moment i saw the Joycons for the first time in a Kiosk.
one thing i like about the joycons, is that if you use them separately, you can map the side buttons for othet stuff. I really like to use back buttons on controllers, and the joycon have them from factory (sorta)
Wii motion plus controller is unmatched. Skyward sword is one of my favorite games and playing it on the switch is legitimately ass. Wii controller was smooth and not having to recalibrate it every 10 seconds was a blessing in hindsight.
Completely opposite experience in my case. I loved using my joycons and I got used to manual recalibration super quickly. Much prefer that to setting up the sensor bar and rolling the dice on whether it's set up perfectly or slightly off.
What I love about the Joycons the most is that despite some cumbersome functionality, they make playing local co-op with another person incredibly convenient. My mom recently came to visit on vacation and when I would go to the Laundromat once a week, she'd tag along and I would bring my Switch so we could kill time by playing Diablo 3 co-op together. I genuinely appreciate being able to just snap a joycon off the switch, turn it sideways, and now another person can jump in with me.
I still think the Joy Con rails included with the Switch should’ve been like the AA Battery Pack (just without the battery terminals) to give them the controllers some meat on their bones. Those things are a godsend for comfortability and don’t make me hate using the joycons wirelessly
Both the wiimote and joycons aren't really ergonomically great. The wiimote has way better motion controls because it uses infrared and you don't have readjust them everytime. But it lacks all of the more traditional buttons like the Joycons and devs would have to work around that. The wiimote is at least fairly big and sturdy compared to the joycons. The joycons have the HD rumble which are really nice for games that use them well like Odyssey.
The drifting of the gyro controls were the worst thing about the Metroid Prime remaster to me, needing to constantly recentre it was just way too annoying. I ended up reverting back to classic GameCube controls.
Quick thing about the joycon strap being hard to take off, make sure you've opened the latch that keeps them on. lol Honstly tho, i love the old Wiimote and kinda wish i had a broken one, so i can gut a joycon and put the parts in there. that would make using the switch as a streaming device pretty nice.
The Wii remote has aged terribly in terms of side scrolling gameplay and swapping accessories! The joycon is better for attaching tennis peripherals. Also swapping batteries is the worst, it’s no wonder there were third party rechargeable batteries to charge the Wii remotes! The only thing good about the Wii remotes were the pointing motion controls and comfort for holding the controller without anything connected. I’m glad that the Joycon replaced it, because I hated reconnecting Wii remotes, even in GameCube and Wii games like Brawl games that don’t require Wii remotes!
corroded batteries is a sign that the wiimote has substantial standby drain. batteries don't tend to corrode if they're not being used unless it's been decades. before you shove your wiimotes in a drawer just stick a piece of paper or plastic in between one of the battery contacts and it shouldn't discharge, and you can just leave the piece of paper inside the wiimote so you don't lose it.
You know you would think with the motion controls on the joycons you would expect them to port over Wii games but they never really did. I think this is a missed opportunity.
Agree about the weird grease marks left on the joycons. And I say that as someone who almost never uses the joycons as I prefer to play docked with a Pro controller. But some how my joycons have that grease smudge look to them.
Unlike the GameCube controller where you need an adapter, there is literally nothing stopping Nintendo from enabling wii remotes on switch, they would only need to sell a USB sensor bar
I like the wiimote n nunchuck combo so much , it feels really comfortable to play like this which made me very hyped for the joycons but you know how the joycons ended up being kind of a problem which is a shame for me....and I used to always remove the batteries from my wiimotes to avoid draining the battery
They were insane for putting a power button on the wiimote. My siblings would turn the Wii off for no reason all the time because they thought it was funny.
I was recently playing the Epic Mickey game that was ported to the switch and it was surprisingly uncomfortable to play compared to the Wii. It felt obvious that it was meant to be played with some kind of pointer and i realized that there aren't a lot of games that use the joycon in that way.
One annoying thing about sideways joycon is the button labels arent symmetrical, so if you're playing with someone new trying to explain the controls you can't just say "press the x button" you have to say something like "press the up face button"
Switch 2 having a sensor bar makes sense from the standpoint of seeing GameCube-and by extension Wii-games coming to Nintendo Online/being remade in the coming years
3:06 I still think the Wii Remote should have two more additional buttons alongside the 1 and 2 buttons, so using on its side it would have more similar to a Super NES, perhaps with a pair of shoulder buttons on its side like a Joy Con
I had better aim in shooters like RE4 with the Wiimote than I ever did with a mouse on PC. I wish the whole industry had gone that route following the Wii's success. That and the Wiimote/Nunchuck setup let you melt into the couch without having to bring your harms together to hold a controller. So comfy!
I would absolutely adore having IR Pointer controls return to Nintendo consoles. My solution to the issue would be trying to hide the IR camera be hidden in the ZR button of the Switch Successor Joy-Con. It would be slightly inconvenient to have to keep your finger out of the way, but in comparison to flipping the right Joy-Con upside down??? Yeah, I'll take my finger sometimes blocking the camera.
I think the only time I’ve seen the IR sensor get used was in WarioWare Move It Also I believe the joy-con limited some games in the way that the wii remote did for the wii u. Of all the gamecube games they could’ve chosen for mario party superstars they didn’t choose ANY that used the C-Stick since that would not let it be compatible with one joy con.
The thing I don’t like about the Joycon is how many times you have to lock/unlock them depending how you want to play. It’s a pain in the ass. If you want to use the Joycons as a controller, you have to lock them to the black plastic mimic controller. If you want to use them as two separate entities, you have to lock the black bars to the sides of both of them to get a better grip feel. Not to mention the straps for those who use them. If you want to play handheld or charge the Joycons, you have to unhook them, and hook them to the Switch itself. tl;dr: Hooking and unhooking the Joycons sucks and feels time-consuming.
I still just wish the Wii Remote had a second button against the B button so it could emulated a shoulder and trigger button layout. Mainly, I just want this so I can have a separate zoom and shoot button in Pandora's Tower, cause trying to shoot stuff with your chain and having it zoom instead or trying to shoot what you're zoomed in on can often be really tedious and isn't the kind of issue I wanna have when the entire game I'm playing is on a timer! Still love that game. Nintendo's Shadow of the Collosas (not saying it's as good as that). Just an experience I really love. Was also one of the few Wii games available on the Wii U eshop back in the day. Highly recommended, even if it's more honestly like a 7 out of 10 Wii game on a good day, it's a worthwhile one. I rather play a 7 that gets me invested than a 9 that's just fine and does everything right but nothing special
Thank you mr stash for another video in the "every topic concievable" series where we hear you explain something for the 10th time because it overlaps with other videos
If the pointer worked more like a mouse on desktop than a mouse pointer on, like, a trackball, it'd probably be the best way to play shooters on console.
I've never liked the Joy Cons, they just feel cheap and basically a kids toy, I've tried all sorts of things to try and make them feel better, such as enhanced grips for them, or even as you said putting them in accessories such as the Mario Kart wheel, but they just don't feel good to use like that either, and then when you consider how easily they can get Joystick drift, or be easily damaged due to drops from a specific height, I can only imagine that Satoru Iwata did not have an opportunity to test these himself, as he was facing many difficulties with his health and unfortunately passed away, because I strongly believe that had Iwata been more involved with the designs, that he would have pushed for them to be more ergonomical and durable too, as Iwata was the reason why the Wii Remotes were so durable that the actual Nunchuks could be used as the actual weapons.
Like Wii better but sometimes think the second part is really wroth. Most time you can pick with or with out. Or fit all in one. But sometimes fun to add one beside glitch out sometimes.
Wii remote if fun!! Amazing pointer, feels great for motion controls and has such a charming design!!! Joycon is an actual semi-practical feeling controller (At least in pairs lol)
i dont own a switch so I cant really make any comparisons but I can't believe they didn't put a speaker on the controllers. Like that was one of the really cool things it had, you look at The Calling and hearing the ghosts make noises through the wii remote is just so so cool. Honestly I'm disappointed by how safe the switch is in comparison to the wii or wii u. I really wish nintendo had marketed and developed for the Wii U better because the switch is just too conventional and unexciting compared to the several (unfortunately failed) gimmicks the wii u tried to provide.
I like joycons because you can take them off and put a hori split pad on instead, then you can comfortably play fighting games on the go, which is more than I can say for the steamdeck.
I fucking hate Joy-Cons on their own but kinda hope they stick around for the next console cause theres a idea there with them. If they redesign them like say making them ergonomic, making the analog sticks a bit like a gamecube analog stick, giving them a butt to grip, a fucking optional d-pad and i think that could make for a decent controller.
I keep a modded Wii around mainly for Wii ware games and lightgun games like “house of the dead” series and some of the one offs and compilations. I always have a few extra lying around as it’s just a good retro system and I have a ton of original controllers and wavebirds. Sure, you will lose 2 Trigger buttons (the smaller ones) but you would gain 4 extra buttons: The SL/SR on each Joycon.
But that was just the idea i had the moment i saw the Joycons for the first time in a Kiosk.
That legally blind joke got me 😂😂😂
one thing i like about the joycons, is that if you use them separately, you can map the side buttons for othet stuff.
Well then 3 cheers for the Switch 2…Hip Hip
I can't BELIEVE I just looked this up like an hour ago and refreshed to see this
13:04 Sure! One Wii Remote coming up! *THUD!* ohhh. I just threw my wii mote in terms to giving it io scott and ow.
I sometimes wonder if Nintendo takes notes from some of these videos
Joy cons>wii remote any days
I always imagine Scott laying on the floor presenting these
That or just in goblin mode hunched over a phone on a tiny tripod.
swinging his legs behind him
Quick thing about the joycon strap being hard to take off, make sure you've opened the latch that keeps them on. lol
Honstly tho, i love the old Wiimote and kinda wish i had a broken one, so i can gut a joycon and put the parts in there.
that would make using the switch as a streaming device pretty nice.
The Virtual Boy had the superior controller
The joycons are amazing, i specially love the hd rumble, it's so magical when it's used like in tetris effect
I feel like you made more argument against the Wiimote but then chose Wiimote as superior anyway.
They were insane for putting a power button on the wiimote. My siblings would turn the Wii off for no reason all the time because they thought it was funny.
5:17 couldn't help but laugh at the contrast
You might want the nice newish rechargeable battery packs that go into Wii remotes. They come with charging stands. They're great.
Like father like son! Dont throw the son my god thats abuse!
Switch 2 having a sensor bar makes sense from the standpoint of seeing GameCube-and by extension Wii-games coming to Nintendo Online/being remade in the coming years
wii remote < joycon < wii remote plus
3:06 I still think the Wii Remote should have two more additional buttons alongside the 1 and 2 buttons, so using on its side it would have more similar to a Super NES, perhaps with a pair of shoulder buttons on its side like a Joy Con
It probably wouldn't have worked too well with the condom covers
@IBubblesTV well, probably yeah
I had better aim in shooters like RE4 with the Wiimote than I ever did with a mouse on PC. I wish the whole industry had gone that route following the Wii's success.
That and the Wiimote/Nunchuck setup let you melt into the couch without having to bring your harms together to hold a controller. So comfy!
12:07 truer words have never been said
nobody talks about this. sweaty hands are the worst
Joy con makes skyward sword actually work. End of story
that bit at the end, hearing them fall onto the real floor is kind of freaky and funny
I think the only time I’ve seen the IR sensor get used was in WarioWare Move It
Also I believe the joy-con limited some games in the way that the wii remote did for the wii u. Of all the gamecube games they could’ve chosen for mario party superstars they didn’t choose ANY that used the C-Stick since that would not let it be compatible with one joy con.
Ir sensor underneath the triggers and motion sensor on the part of the switch that sticks out from the dock would be sick
3:03 _Super Paper Mario_ has entered the chat
Classic Scott's Stash type of video. I'll save it for dinner. Thanks!
Thank you mr stash for another video in the "every topic concievable" series where we hear you explain something for the 10th time because it overlaps with other videos
If the pointer worked more like a mouse on desktop than a mouse pointer on, like, a trackball, it'd probably be the best way to play shooters on console.
Wow! I'd never seen a Wii remote with a white A button (instead of clear) before this video.
Holding the Wii remote sideways is something I've always felt I shouldn't enjoy... but I _really_ do. 🤷♂️
I never hated the Joy Cons, but nowadays, I only use them if I have to. They get the job done in the games I use them for, though.
I don’t care what anyone says, to me they will always be called Wiimotes not Wii remotes
EPIC RAP BATTLES OF HISTORY!!!!
I like joycons because you can take them off and put a hori split pad on instead, then you can comfortably play fighting games on the go, which is more than I can say for the steamdeck.
Joy-Con is the perfect controller to play a video game for 17 seconds
If you don’t use that white tea shaped piece on the bottom of the joy, con grip’s to release it properly, it will break the joy, con rails
I fucking hate Joy-Cons on their own but kinda hope they stick around for the next console cause theres a idea there with them. If they redesign them like say making them ergonomic, making the analog sticks a bit like a gamecube analog stick, giving them a butt to grip, a fucking optional d-pad and i think that could make for a decent controller.
i love the joy-con, i just want circle pads instead of sticks...
❗️My Timestamps:
7:33 I've never had any issues with holding the Joy-Cons for long periods of time.
in my experience using good quality rechargeable AA batteries, wii remotes have somewhere between 6-12 hours of battery life
I've been binge watching your vids so seeing this pop out was an instant click
I keep a modded Wii around mainly for Wii ware games and lightgun games like “house of the dead” series and some of the one offs and compilations. I always have a few extra lying around as it’s just a good retro system and I have a ton of original controllers and wavebirds. My youngest daughter still loves using it for just dance and MK Wii which she still prefers over the newer titles. I also have a couple of modded Wii Us I still use. My switch joy cons are getting replaced with some hori made ones. Not a fan of stick drift.
