I made it through perimenopause on diet and exercise alone. I had insomnia, hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations, a 30 pound weight gain and joint pain. Things settled down after menopause, but four years into post menopause, I still could not sleep well. I hadn’t had a full night of sleep in 13 years. I was even afraid to drive. That’s when I found a menopause specialist who put me on body identical hormones. They were a lifesaver! I sleep all night long now, my blood pressure returned to normal, I’m no longer stiff, etc. I’m still struggling to lose the weight I gained, but my most important thing was sleep, and it’s been great!

@ , hi there. I’m on an estradiol patch that I change twice a week, and I take an oral progesterone pill nightly. I always say the progesterone puts me to sleep, and the estradiol keeps me asleep. I feel so much better. Both are mostly covered under my insurance. I just pay $20 a month out of pocket for both.

@ I was denied hrt by my gynecologist. So I found an otc plant based (supposedly bioidentical) hrt online. After about a month of using it, my skin stop crawling, I stopped having sores in my mouth, and fewer hot flashes. My hair is growing back, and I feel better. I think I may still have a ways to go, so I’m searching for a more informed gynecologist.

Your wife is suffering from abrupt drop in her estrogen levels and this affects her entire body. Women's health especially is grossly under researched. Dr. Lisa Mosconi s research shows that on average the brain has a 40 percent drop in ATP production which cause nasty mood changes in perimenopause. Buy the book " Estrogen Matters "by Dr Avrum Bluming and Dr.CarolTavries to learn what symptoms estrogen causes.Consider the newer forms of transdermal hormone replacement .if you are aware of the Women's Health Initiative was a severely flawed study. Estrogen does not cause breast cancer.

When I was 36 y.o. and just beginning my insomnia journey that would last 26 years, I too was given Prozac and Ambian to help me sleep. What a joke. One more reason to not trust the pharmaceutical industry. After 26 years of not sleeping, and never feeling rested a doctor finally offered me estradiol and testosterone pellets with progesterone caps at night. Less than a week later I was sleeping through the night getting 8-9 hours of solid, restful sleep. Boy, am I pissed off. The Women’s Health Initiative inaccurately blamed estrogen for causing cancer and denied millions of women the necessary replacement hormones that could have alleviated horrific suffering for years. THIS is one more reason I don’t trust the conventional medical establishment. Hopefully the next generation of women and girls will be believed and supported instead of shamed and denied real help.

Dr Haver does go into the issues that women who've had cancer must consider in discussion with their Dr in regards to HRT. There can be options. Outside of that, there are lifestyle factors that can contribute to better health in menopause. I recently started weight training and love it. Despite the shoulder pains, I’ve still dedicated time to go to my gym at least 3x/wk and work out. Hi there! From what Dr. Haver has said is since hormone levels change throughout the day, there isnt a typical normal baseline level bc it’s different for every woman. They normally base being a candidate for HRT by patients medical history, family history of breast cancer and SYMPTOMS the patient is experiencing. And you can always get a second opinion. They have ob/gyn’s who study and WANT TO KNOW THE FACTS about HRT and have the LATEST info on it- not outdated, old studies and testing done previously. Its just awful 😞

We have to STOP SAYING Estrogen dominance. There’s technically no such thing. What IS TRUE that in perimenopause, progesterone typically falls out first while estrogen continues to spike wildly until menopause. So it’s more technically true to say you were progesterone deficient (while Estrogen could be in optimal range). We say dominant because it appears it is dominating progesterone. However, that’s not true. A woman’s estrogen markers can be OPTIMAL, it’s just not being opposed or balanced by progesterone who keeps falling out the race.

Estrogen did not mess you up. It was the imbalance of the hormones. We have to be careful on how we phrase statements. Many women reading this will emotionally jump to a poor deduction. As with anything, poor absorption will cause adverse (or of you will NO EFFECT). If you were not absorbing the progesterone, then how can it downgrade or oppose the estrogen? Is it estrogen’s fault (a hormone you made your entire life)? Or was it NOT the correct balance? Again, I tell women to use less emotion and more logic. Science is logic-despite the emotional impact on our emotions. We take for granted what our bodies did naturally for 30-40 years on auto pilot. Then we go on HRT and expect to not monitor what we are mechanically manipulating our bodies to do what nature did on auto pilot.

I didn't know HRT with bioidentical hormones using patch estradiol and progesterone, whether micronized oral or intravaginal (I thought progesterone was too large to be absorbed through even the mucosal lining so most MD's don't prescribe it this way), could lead to weight gain. Having breast and uterine cancer in my mid forties, then being tossed into post menopause I know the struggle. Thank you Dr. Hyman and Dr. Haver. A few questions. If someone does all the good things you talk about and still have lower belly pouch, can you speak to cosmetic surgery or anything else I may need to try at this point. Why do doctors tell you that checking your hormone panel is not something they recommend., because they fluctuate so much, so its not needed. Lastly, I know men who struggle with andropause, can you do a show on this Dr Hyman?

Not a lot of great insight on different non-pharmacological approaches and root causes. She did not answer a lot of your questions regarding those issues and beat around the bush. You answered your own questions, doctor. 😅
What about how the thyroid and adrenals are connected? What about how vitamin D and the role it plays in PMS and PMDD. What about the high amounts of alcohol, caffeine and sugar that women are ingesting nowadays along with low fiber intake that’s contributing to the obesity epidemic, PCOS, infertility, menopausal symptoms, metabolic syndrome, etc.
Yes, there is a time and place for prescription of HRT, but I think those other issues need to be addressed first.

I am confused, then why do they say the women that don't go through menopause until later (past 51) have higher chance of breast cancer?????? Because of longer exposure to estrogen.
From article Entering menopause after age 55 also increases breast cancer risk because the woman has had more menstrual cycles, increasing her lifetime exposure to estrogen and progesterone.

@@katebruno9255 Hi Kate, sometimes only 25 mg works for me, but when it doesn't, I follow the dosage suggested on the bottle that says to use 50 to 100 mg of the tincture. For my product, that means 1 ml to 2 ml. I have always slept through the night with 1 ml but usually .75 mls is enough for me. My sister who is about 10% smaller and has lowered immune system than me and who is on HRT doing super well with it, says she stays groggy in the morning for hours when she takes a particular formula I like best, which is 3 parts CBD, 1 part CBG and 1 part CBN, made specifically to help with sleep. It also helps with sense of well being and a bit of pain according to many people. I can't tell, but I should monitor whether my joints feel better when I take CBD/CBN/CBG. These are concentrated in a tincture but are all found on the hemp plant. I'm trying not to depend on this product for sleep since I don't trust any crutches for health issues but try and figure out the underlying problem for why I don't stay asleep like I did as a younger woman. So I only take it occasionally when i don't sleep for several nights in a row that messes up my tennis. When I sleep well, my tennis goes to another level. I'm sure that lack of sleep for several nights in a row manifests in other ways also, just not as easily noticed.
