For those that do visit our lovely country 'Belgium', I highly recommend to visit Waterloo if you can. The Museum of Waterloo is definitely worth paying a visit as there's a ton of stuff you can look at. From mannequins wearing UK, French, ... uniforms to videos showing the power of an artillery and musket shot and the slice of an officer's sword.
The 360 panorama of the Battle of Waterloo is freaking awesome and there is also a virtual experience which I can recommend.
BUT there is nothing better than going up LA BUTTE DU LION and looking at the battlefield yourself :)
    Glorious indeed!

I would have loved to come there for the 200th anniversary of the battle, but incidintally I was born on the 18th of June and that year I turned 18, so unfortunately family and obligations and stuff happened. Someday I will travel there though.

Just a quick note: Napoleon was Emperor of the French, not France. A subtle difference, but it was to symbolise his elevation to power by the will of the people, and not because of his right to the throne, like in other absolute monarchies of the time.

36:00 It's called spiking the canon. You would hammer the spike into the hole for the fuse. Because of the deformed hole, the barel would have a weak spot and the canon would likely explode when fired.
A retreating army would also spike and detonate the canons they left behind, as well as burning the limbers.

    • @ioantt1754
      @ioantt1754 6 років тому +2

LordFedme yeah and quite famously at the battle of Waterloo itself the Anglo cavalry forgot to take the equipment to spike the canons with them, and even though at one stage they broke through the French infantry and then took the French canon positions they were unable to do anything to them, had to retreat due to a counter attack by the French cavalry and then the French canon crews retook their canons and were able to resume firing

Pixelated Apollo Just a small corretion. This match was not from "historical battle" part of the mod. This was only a scenario. The difference is that while in scenarios pre-set army from regular multiplayer faction are used, in HB each unit has a very specific name with division and brigade written in it. In scenarios you can deploy armies as you like and reinforcements and HB rules are not used.

Several facts that experts agree on. Napoleon could not review his troops before the battle, and it was very important for the French because "they walk a lot in morale".
    - Bad transmissions and ambiguity of the orders: to Ney (1st corps in Ligny), to Grouchy blocked in Wavre: the important thing was not that Grouchy rejoins Waterloo but that it prevents the Prussians from getting there
-Late engagements June 16 at Quatre-Bras and Ligny and June 18 at Waterloo where the battle could have started earlier (the ground did not thwart the Prussian movements) and where the Guard could "give" when Ney asked for reinforcements for the thrust.
-Lack of coordination of weapons: Jerome attacks Hougoumont without preparation of artillery; Ney launches cavalry charges, forgetting his infantry; the Guard "gives" without artillery support and when there is no more cavalry.
-Mapping also had an impact: a poor reproduction of the Mont-Saint-Jean farm on the left side of a road made it confused with the Haie-Sainte, a deviation of 1 km (fatal for the artillery the balls falling thus in the mud33).
-Field knowledge by Wellington who had spotted the place a year before and decided the place of the battle.

Quatre bras wAs important because if Wellington didnt hold the wood and crossroad the way was open for Napoleon to march on Brussels. Wellington wasnt trying to join up with the Prussians yet though as he was worried that the French attack was a feint and the real attack would come onto his right flank cutting off his lines of communication with the coastline , this is why his forces were so strung out and not concentrated yet.

Marshal Ney could have taken the Crossroads days beforehand as only 4000 men low on ammunition were defending it.
However he hesitated so long the Duke of Wellington marched all the way up after a change of plans and instead both sides took great casualties. Napoleon on the other hand was fighting the Prussians and sent troops to Ney, thinking he was holding the crossroads from attacks, assuming he already took it.
He also received orders later on to march south and flank the Prussians with his troops, which would have routed them, preventing the Prussians from ever coming back in the final conflict. However, no such force was dispatched because he was still busy taking the Crossroads, after giving the British days to prepare and march.
Later on in the final conflict during the battle Ney made more blunders which ended up losing most of Napoleons Cavalry and pressing on with tactics that were obviously not working.
In my opinion, Ney may as well have cost Napoleon the entire battle of Waterloo. If the Prussians hadn't arrived during the final battle Napoleon still had the guns and infantry to beat the British. On top of that he had to send 33,000 men and Cavalry with supplies after the battle with the Prussians to blindly search for them and try to delay them from coming to the battlefield because Ney could not come to rout them. These troops could have been used with Napoleon's main army to easily crush the inferior British forces still holding out.
    so gg

Ney did not pursue the Anglo-Allies after Quatres Bras, which angered Napoleon. Napoleon won a tactical victory at Ligny, he also failed to pursue the Prussians. Ney arrived and told Napoleon that Wellington was retreating. Napoleon was angered because Ney failed to pursue and destory Wellington. The failure to exploit the advantage at Quatres Bras and Ligny allowed the Anglo-Allies to recover and unite at Waterloo.

Ive noticed that given the large size of the battle, effective tactics arent employed much. For example, the firing lines dont move much, just continue trading volleys. A good tactic is to walk to the enemy line, take a volley, then run to close range, fire a deadly volley, then charge. This breaks enemy units really well but requites micro management. Its an old British tactic

A major problem was the dutch regiments wore uniforms styled the same as former France allies. Also there was a difference in musket ball size as the dutch had french made muskets. At this battle some Dutch soldiers and cavalry changed sides or fired at British, Hanover and the Brunswick army which had been opposed to France who occupied their country . Brunswick which was a small state whose Duke dies in the battle (real one) leaving his army to fight on for freedom.
