I worked as a production assistant on this movie back when I was in college. We hired like 1000 extras for the scene where people are crossing the mexican border. It was a crazy month of work and it end up being like 30 seconds in the film. lol. Great experience though.

Dante's peak is the first film I paid for digitally to watch through cable TV back when they had set showing times waited 2 hours for it to start then fell asleep a minute into it lol still haven't seen it.
No... this is not based on a true story. The one based on a true story is called "The Impossible". It is an accurate recounting of the big Sunami several years ago east of the coast of Africa. It is an excellent movie... very suspenseful.

"The day after" is a good one too. It was a made for TV movie that scared people so much they never showed it again. I was just recently able to find it on UA-cam.

In the early 70’s we lived in Oklahoma. I was in the fourth grade and one afternoon me, my two youngest older sibs and some of our friends were out running around in the yard playing. A neighbor had come over and her and my mom were standing on the front porch visiting. All of a sudden something came flying onto the porch and hit the neighbor in the side, she cried out and doubled over. My mom started yelling at us kids, thinking we’d been throwing something around, which wasn’t all that strange for us to be doing, but this time it wasn’t us. Then we started hearing a loud ‘WHOMP!’ every couple minutes and we’d see something bounce off the ground. When my mom realized what it was she started yelling at us to get in the house. It was hail…shaped and as big as a medium sized patty pan squash. The hail didn’t fall as fast as the ‘Japanese’ hail in this movie, but it was about the same size and sometimes bigger. The local ice cream man kept some of the bigger ones in his truck freezer for a long time.

So the way someone taught me to whistle with my fingers is to push your tongue back with your fingers and brace your fingers against your lower canine teeth and just play around until you get it. I think it is a lot easier to learn with 4 fingers (index and middle from both hands) than just 2 fingers. Well I tried to make this not sound dirty but can't help but feel I have failed...

Ooh I am jealous. I am not so into action/adventure so I always end up seeing something like this on cable thinking Dam this would be good in the theater!! Fun FACT, yesterday the scientists who study the ocean currents of the Atlantic Ocean or AMOC, have just published an article stating that we are about to experience a drastic change in the dynamics of these currents, due to the alteration of salt levels in the waters. (Bc of the ice melted from the artic).This can produce massive weather disasters like the ones in the movie.
The Atlantic Gulf Stream is in jeopardy of shutting down which means the weather systems will drastically change. North Atlantic seaboard and Europe could get much colder bc the warm currents from the tropics can’t get north. The storm system today in Los Angeles is bringing hurricane watches to California central coast at Big Sur for the first time. We’re already in dramatic climate change… and still so little is being done to take it seriously
The biggest issue is that the damage has already been done. Even if we switched to carbon neutral and stopped using fossil fuels today, it's still going to get worse before it gets better. Food production is being decimated by the changing climate, and that is a huge concern.

The docudrama "Shakleton's Captain" is a true story, happened more than 100 years ago and they actually had a film maker / photographer with them. It's the story about an Antarctica expedition that went very wrong. It is truly amazing.

The intro scene is in part based on reality, back in 1986 a 1,500 square mile Ice berg (3,900kmsq) weighing 1 TRILLION tonnes broke of the Antarctic ice shelf, It's still around today 38 years later and just made the news for doing a complete 360 degree spin as it slowly heads north towards the Atlantic ocean. It's so heavy it's dragging on the ocean floor. There's a HUGE dollop of artistic licence in this movie but many of the basics are correct. More worrying than A23 is the ice melt in Greenland, should that entire sheet melt sea levels could rise by upto 7 metres globally (100 feet). it would dump TRILLIONS of tonnes of cold water into the northern Atlantic and cause the Gulf stream to stop and reduce temps across the entire Northern hemisphere to the point we enter another ice age. Europe Asia and North America plunged into arctic temperatures as a result. Last time something similar happened was 10,500BC when the north American Ice sheet melted over a 1,200 year timescale (called the "Younger Dryas" though some recent studies suggest it could have happened in a much MUCH shorter timescale), that event raised sea levels by 420 feet, even if it took 1200 years that's STILL an average sea level increase of over 4 inches a year. There are over 500 great flood "myths" around the globe, this event is quite possibly the grain of truth behind them. From Atlantis to Noah in the bible. All could be a legacy of this one event from 12,500 year in our past..
This movie is based on the 1999 book, The Coming Global Superstorm, written by Whitley Streiber and famed former late night radio host, Art Bell. Both Streiber and Bell are worth looking up for those not acquainted with Bell's show, Coast To Coast A.M. It may be difficult to find, depending on the platform, due to Bell's unhappiness with the direction C2C took under his former fill in host and eventual replacement, George Noory. This book/movie also helped give a much needed kick to people to join the Prepper Movement. Whatever your personal SHTF moment is, EVERYONE should have a plan and prepare accordingly.

When this came out, I was on summer break from college and working at the food court in the mall. My coworker and I were broke AF but wanted to see this movie. We were super nice and helpful to every customer so we could get tips and use that to see the movie. We earned just enough in tips to buy our tickets. Loved the movie. Money well spent.
Where we live, this winter, we had our own Day After Tomorrow event. it hit -40 below and even with our heaters and fireplace roaring, in sections of the house the windows, doors, pipes, all froze and frosted, we could see our breaths. That week it was colder than the North Pole.

The issue was Asia THOUGHT he said "Jack" in a way to say "no no you're wrong" kind of way prompting you to switch to thinking Jack was the guy who sacrificed himself at the mall. But BJ was just telling you that Dennis Quaid played the character Jack. Well...one fact that proves this movie's portrayal of what's possible is definitely not the "worst, worst, worst case scenario" nor "exaggerated" is the fact that during a relatively recent ice age, the sheets covered most of the Earth and in places like New York, were ONE MILE thick! Damn...imagine THAT! :)
I mean you could say that it’s a true story. There has been many ice ages in our planets history. I read somewhere that during the last ice age, there was an ice cap that went from the North Pole all the way down to current day Iowa or Illinois. Pretty much stretched all the way across the Midwest and was like 2 miles thick. Pretty wild to think about.
Whales would not survive such history unless the blubber was always designed into them when created. Forget ice ages. They wouldn't be able to survive evolution history.
whenever i see movies like this, i always feel bad cause i think about all the animals in captivity that can't fight to stay alive. 😢 i would have just let them all out. chances are they gonna be more worried bout getting away then attacking humans 😂

the only thing thats based on true events is the Larsen B ice shelf collapse. it collapsed in 2002 if i remember correctly. thats what happens at the very start of the movie.

I was dog sitting a six month old that was making it his goal to see how crazy he could drive me. Weirdest thing he got into was a glasses case and reading glasses that he attempted to chew. That is a good movie, I also enjoyed Alive the first movie made about that tragedy but it's not a natural disaster movie, I think it's actually The Impossible that Asia was thinking of perhaps.

I went to boarding school in Oklahoma and our entire campus went to see this in the only theater in town and this movie became one of my favorite disaster flicks at the time! Everyone was so invested and in awe of this that one of my dorm mates got it on DVD and my dorm mates all sat down in our living room to watch it a second time upon its DVD release, it was that good!
As a Canadian you’re stupid because the cold they are running from is -150 degrees so don’t really understand your point you would instantly die. I’ve been in minus 30s and 40s all the time and I’m not going to just go outside and hang out in it just because and neither are you just because you’ve been in really cold temperatures doesn’t mean anything.
Definitely watch Dante's Peak! It's incredibly good! And keep an eye on your puppy with that diarrhea. Parvo is a very serious illness in puppies and dogs. It causes disrreah and dehydration, and can kill a puppy or dog if not caught and treated.❤️
This move taught me that humans are resilient. We are so strong. Any real storm in history that was so bad, may 3rd tornado, hurricane Katrina, San Francisco earthquake or the Boxing Day Hurricane, shows that no matter what you throw at us, you can’t kill all of us. We fight to live that’s for sure.
This movie scared the hell out of me, to be honest. Super possible. We already know things that are now land, were once seas...because of the presence of fossils of marine life. We know entire cities, and perhaps entire civilizations that were once above on land...are now underwater. Our Earth has had catastrophic changes, some related to weather and others not. It's scary to think about.
Dante's Peak, Volcano, 2012, Armageddon, Deep Impact are some of the best to decent disaster movies notable mentions The Day The earth stood Still with Keanu Reeves and Knowing with Nicolas Cage. Y'all should definitely check these out.

It's not based off true events but it does predict what will happen to our weather when global warming becomes more of an issue. It's actually kinda happening now because there's more extreme weather events happening now than ever. It's very scary and interesting at the same time
It’s basically the worst case climate scenarios all smushed together. We’re seeing all of the changes shown, it’s just happening at a global pace, not Hollywoods.

I always enjoy this movie but though I don't know about the science part--whether this could happen or not----I do know that they wouldn't be able to walk in that time from Phila to NYC even on a nice day! 40 miles would take many, many hours. We used to hike 30 miles starting in the dark and ending in the dark---in the fall. Also, books don't burn well! You'd have to spread out the pages, otherwise they form a block and it doesn't burn. I know just enough to make me dangerous. 🙂
Scientists believe the ocean current that shut down in this movie will actually happen by 2050, so we could see some of what is in this film, but likely not as extreme.
the older British doc is Ian Holm. he played "Ash" the evil android in Alien and his most famous role was "Bilbo Baggins" in the LOTR. of course, this was a propaganda movie...and not true.
If you want to do other disaster films in no particular order I would recommend 2012, Dante's Peak, geostorm, Greenland, deep impact and Armageddon these would be the other big disaster films that all of the people that love disasters have also seen

My mom started yelling at us kids, thinking we’d been throwing something around, which wasn’t all that strange for us to be doing, but this time it wasn’t us. Then we started hearing a loud ‘WHOMP!’ every couple minutes and we’d see something bounce off the ground. When my mom realized what it was she started yelling at us to get in the house. It was hail…shaped and as big as a medium sized patty pan squash. The hail didn’t fall as fast as the ‘Japanese’ hail in this movie, but it was about the same size and sometimes bigger. The local ice cream man kept some of the bigger ones in his truck freezer for a long time.
Years ago, (in 06' or 07'?) when I was in job corp, my Social Studies/history teacher showed us this movie. (Shout-out to Mrs. Eline Caulkins)

So the way someone taught me to whistle with my fingers is to push your tongue back with your fingers and brace your fingers against your lower canine teeth and just play around until you get it. I think it is a lot easier to learn with 4 fingers (index and middle from both hands) than just 2 fingers.

The disaster film ‘2012’ released in 2009 has mad-great special effects 👍 Check out ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ from 1972. It’s a great retro disaster movie set on a cruise liner 🌊
I love The Poseidon Adventure. I love just about all of Irwin Allen's disaster movies. I started my love for disaster movies with Airport in 1970.
Posiedon adventure and the Towering Inferno are both amazing films. and yeah, 2012 is incredible.
Towering inferno is one of the best disaster movies that's built on the hubris of man.
The Poseidon Adventure 1972 is very good as well with an all star cast with gene Hackman Ernest Borgnine Leslie Nielsen and one of the best disaster movies ever made

Fun FACT, yesterday the scientists who study the ocean currents of the Atlantic Ocean or AMOC, have just published an article stating that we are about to experience a drastic change in the dynamics of these currents, due to the alteration of salt levels in the waters. (Bc of the ice melted from the artic).This can produce massive weather disasters like the ones in the movie.
The Atlantic Gulf Stream is in jeopardy of shutting down which means the weather systems will drastically change. North Atlantic seaboard and Europe could get much colder bc the warm currents from the tropics can’t get north.
The storm system today in Los Angeles is bringing hurricane watches to California central coast at Big Sur for the first time. We’re already in dramatic climate change… and still so little is being done to take it seriously
The biggest issue is that the damage has already been done. Even if we switched to carbon neutral and stopped using fossil fuels today, it's still going to get worse before it gets better. Food production is being decimated by the changing climate, and that is a huge concern.

The docudrama "Shakleton's Captain" is a true story, happened more than 100 years ago and they actually had a film maker / photographer with them. It's the story about an Antarctica expedition that went very wrong. It is truly amazing.
Alive is a good survival movie as well. It is based on a true story of a rugby team whose flight crashes over the Andes mountains.

The intro scene is in part based on reality, back in 1986 a 1,500 square mile Ice berg (3,900kmsq) weighing 1 TRILLION tonnes broke of the Antarctic ice shelf, It's still around today 38 years later and just made the news for doing a complete 360 degree spin as it slowly heads north towards the Atlantic ocean. It's so heavy it's dragging on the ocean floor.
There's a HUGE dollop of artistic licence in this movie but many of the basics are correct.
More worrying than A23 is the ice melt in Greenland, should that entire sheet melt sea levels could rise by upto 7 metres globally (100 feet). it would dump TRILLIONS of tonnes of cold water into the northern Atlantic and cause the Gulf stream to stop and reduce temps across the entire Northern hemisphere to the point we enter another ice age. Europe Asia and North America plunged into arctic temperatures as a result.
Last time something similar happened was 10,500BC when the north American Ice sheet melted over a 1,200 year timescale (called the "Younger Dryas" though some recent studies suggest it could have happened in a much MUCH shorter timescale), that event raised sea levels by 420 feet, even if it took 1200 years that's STILL an average sea level increase of over 4 inches a year.
There are over 500 great flood "myths" around the globe, this event is quite possibly the grain of truth behind them. From Atlantis to Noah in the bible. All could be a legacy of this one event from 12,500 year in our past..
This movie is based on the 1999 book, The Coming Global Superstorm, written by Whitley Streiber and famed former late night radio host, Art Bell. Both Streiber and Bell are worth looking up for those not acquainted with Bell's show, Coast To Coast A.M. It may be difficult to find, depending on the platform, due to Bell's unhappiness with the direction C2C took under his former fill in host and eventual replacement, George Noory.
This book/movie also helped give a much needed kick to people to join the Prepper Movement. Whatever your personal SHTF moment is, EVERYONE should have a plan and prepare accordingly.

When this came out, I was on summer break from college and working at the food court in the mall. My coworker and I were broke AF but wanted to see this movie. We were super nice and helpful to every customer so we could get tips and use that to see the movie. We earned just enough in tips to buy our tickets. Loved the movie. Money well spent.

Where we live, this winter, we had our own Day After Tomorrow event. it hit -40 below and even with our heaters and fireplace roaring, in sections of the house the windows, doors, pipes, all froze and frosted, we could see our breaths. That week it was colder than the North Pole.

Well...one fact that proves this movie's portrayal of what's possible is definitely not the "worst, worst, worst case scenario" nor "exaggerated" is the fact that during a relatively recent ice age, the sheets covered most of the Earth and in places like New York, were ONE MILE thick! Damn...imagine THAT! :)
I mean you could say that it’s a true story. There has been many ice ages in our planets history. I read somewhere that during the last ice age, there was an ice cap that went from the North Pole all the way down to current day Iowa or Illinois. Pretty much stretched all the way across the Midwest and was like 2 miles thick. Pretty wild to think about.
Whales would not survive such history unless the blubber was always designed into them when created. Forget ice ages. They wouldn't be able to survive evolution history.
Greenland is a good newer disaster movie! This one pretty good too.

the only thing thats based on true events is the Larsen B ice shelf collapse. it collapsed in 2002 if i remember correctly. thats what happens at the very start of the movie.
I don't think this was based on a true story... you might be mixing this one with the "Snow Society" about a plane crashing on the Andes mountains.

I went to boarding school in Oklahoma and our entire campus went to see this in the only theater in town and this movie became one of my favorite disaster flicks at the time! Everyone was so invested and in awe of this that one of my dorm mates got it on DVD and my dorm mates all sat down in our living room to watch it a second time upon its DVD release, it was that good!
As a Canadian, in the theater, we laughed at people running from the cold. I've been in -55°F ( -48°C ), which is the same as the tropopause.
As a Canadian you’re stupid because the cold they are running from is -150 degrees so don’t really understand your point you would instantly die. I’ve been in minus 30s and 40s all the time and I’m not going to just go outside and hang out in it just because and neither are you just because you’ve been in really cold temperatures doesn’t mean anything.
It's been mild in Toronto this year. It's snowing today but it's 0°C low of -4°C. 32°F low of 25°F.
Definitely watch Dante's Peak! It's incredibly good! And keep an eye on your puppy with that diarrhea. Parvo is a very serious illness in puppies and dogs. It causes disrreah and dehydration, and can kill a puppy or dog if not caught and treated.❤️
This move taught me that humans are resilient. We are so strong. Any real storm in history that was so bad, may 3rd tornado, hurricane Katrina, San Francisco earthquake or the Boxing Day Hurricane, shows that no matter what you throw at us, you can’t kill all of us. We fight to live that’s for sure.

This movie scared the hell out of me, to be honest. Super possible. We already know things that are now land, were once seas...because of the presence of fossils of marine life. We know entire cities, and perhaps entire civilizations that were once above on land...are now underwater. Our Earth has had catastrophic changes, some related to weather and others not. It's scary to think about.
Dante's Peak, Volcano, 2012, Armageddon, Deep Impact are some of the best to decent disaster movies notable mentions The Day The earth stood Still with Keanu Reeves and Knowing with Nicolas Cage. Y'all should definitely check these out.

It's not based off true events but it does predict what will happen to our weather when global warming becomes more of an issue. It's actually kinda happening now because there's more extreme weather events happening now than ever. It's very scary and interesting at the same time

I always enjoy this movie but though I don't know about the science part--whether this could happen or not----I do know that they wouldn't be able to walk in that time from Phila to NYC even on a nice day! 40 miles would take many, many hours. We used to hike 30 miles starting in the dark and ending in the dark---in the fall. Also, books don't burn well! You'd have to spread out the pages, otherwise they form a block and it doesn't burn. I know just enough to make me dangerous. 🙂
