2012, it's OK. But for more Jake, you might want to consider 'October Sky' it's really good Jen 😊
A little thing I liked in this movie is that they didn't make the rich kid the stereotypical rich douchebag. He offered all of them a place to stay not just the girl and he even risked his own life trying to get medicine to save someone he had just met. I like when movies subvert expectations even in a small way.

They also showed that he wasn't an overly prideful person by showing him taking advice on staying warm from the homeless man.
He even encouraged Jake's character to talk to the girl.
Another small reason that contributes why I like this film, also that soundtrack by Harald Kloser. There's a bit of a love story but it's not overly focused on or 'corny'.

I worked as a production assistant on this movie. Back when i was in college, my film professor got a few of us temp jobs. I was working in extras casting and we hired like almost a thousand people for the border crossing scenes. We worked for like 3-4 weeks nonstop, and it was like 60 seconds in the movie. Lol. It made me realize why movies take so long to film and cost so much to produce. Fun experience though.

I worked for Central Casting in Hollywood and got know several PA's on weekly shows because I would get called back every month to do background again. They had a rule if you appeared in episode 3 you couldn't work that show again until episode 7. I was in 8 episodes of Grey's Anatomy over 2 seasons. Plus 29 other shows, a tv commercial, a music video and a movie. We did one scene during the movie for a high school graduation. So, they hired a 100 extra's and we filmed all day in different sections of the bleachers. Just moving to different rows so it wouldn't look uniform. 14 hours of filming and sitting in bleachers for about 20 seconds of screen time. LOL

The wolves were the worst thing in the movie. The science in concept is correct they just speed things up and overexaggerate how it would really happen.
Trust me, the Canadians survived.

@@mightheal Yep, there are several scientific papers that point to how too much fresh water entering the oceans could lead to a collapse of the Thermohaline Conveyor.....though never with the speed seen in the movie.
This is probably my favorite disaster movie. “2012” is a good one. Dante’s Peak” and “Volcano” are also good

This movie doesn’t get enough love or gets talked about enough. It’s a fun watch just gotta keep an open mind plus “disaster” movies are always fun, also the CGI and special effects still look pretty good.
I think DAY AFTER TOMORROW is a bad title for this film - while it's explained in the story, it's not really a core issue. Every time I hear the title now, I have to continually think of what film is using it. "2012" is immediately defined as That One Film.
As with 2012 and most movies Emmrich directs - if you don't turn your brain off and accept bad (really bad) science and so-so acting ahead of time you are going to have a bad time with his movies. You go for the destruction and spectacle he gives you. Even Moonfall as bad as it was, had some amazing set pieces in it (even if the story was bat shit insane lol). Also let's be real, outrunning "evil bad cold air" at the end was pretty bad though :D
It would've been a better film without the stupid wolves and the sick kid pulling at our heart strings. Both felt intentionally manipulative and pointless. There was plenty else going on in the movie.

You've got to insert a love-triange between a Rich Bad Boy and a working-class stiff?!!" This was hyperbole when it was released, but not so much now. Now I worry more about the people who mistake the science of climate change for fantasy….
It's like people who think that "the core", "Armageddon", and "deep impact" are scientifically accurate

3:09 When I flew to Japan from New York we went over the north pole, looking out the window at Siberia I saw massive cracks like this all over. It looked like the grand canyon, but white.
Desalination in the Atlantic Ocean slowing/altering the current is actually a thing, which makes this movie even scarier.
@33:10 Critics often seem to overlook the fun component of movies. Focussing too much on plot and stuff. Knowing when to be critical and when to just enjoy the movie makes all the difference.
I saw this movie in the theater by myself. It was the height of summer in Texas so, naturally, the movie theater was air conditioned down to about 47 degrees. It was the height of summer, so naturally, I only wore shorts and a T-shirt. I would've been freezing enough as it were, but the added gigantic visuals projected straight into my brain made the experience all the worse. That said, I loved it. Perfect disaster flick.

I'm on board with 2012. It's always a treat to watch you react to some of these far out movies.
Jen, on a similar theme, although this one is based on a true story, I highly recommend the film 'The Impossible' based on the 2004 tsunami that hit Thailand, amongst other countries. It stars Ewan McGregor, Tom Holland, and Naomi Watts, and is brutal in its telling of the events and the aftermath of the Tsunami, but it is an incredible story nonetheless.
Thousands impacted. The well-off, white, foreign family gets a movie. That alone is reason to skip it.

If you know anything about the film, the fact that it was filmed predominantly in Thailand, used a significant number of local people to both star in, and work on the film, and brought a significant amount of money to the local businesses and people, you wouldn't have such a negative view.
I'll leave the last word to someone that was actually there during the Tsunami, these are his words: "Had this film been purely about the tale of a western middle class family's 'ruined' holiday then I would have agreed (with being critical of the film). For me, it was the exact opposite. Rather than concentrating on the 'privileged white visitors', the film portrayed the profound sense of community and unity that I experienced in Thailand, with this family at the centre of it. It was the Thai people who waded through the settled water after the first wave had struck to help individuals and families... The Thai people had just lost everything - homes, businesses, families - yet their instinct was to help the tourists."
@@Ahzpayne Well, yeah, but how a well off family gets to experience such vulnerability and the basic human needs is something that is entertaining. It is a true story in many ways and to limit your representation to not include well off and insured people is unreal. The final scene is a nod to how the real family felt about being rescued by their huge insurance policy. There where so many others that needed that as well. In the midst of crisis everyone where the same though. That is real and maybe that should teach us something.
@@Ahzpayne It’s important to know how the film was made. It was filmed on location in Thailand. A large number of people in the film were survivors of the tsunami. They filmed in the real hospital. Many of the medical staff in the hospital are the real doctors and nurses who were working there through the aftermath. One of the nurses attending to Maria in the film is one of the actual nurses that worked on her. The doctor who operated on her came up and thanked the director for making the movie. The people in the bus station with Henry were real survivors. They rebuilt the entire hotel exactly as it was for the film.
I get the criticism of the film centering on a tourist family, but it does a very good job of showing the Thai people working to save everyone they could. And though it shouldn’t be the case, the movie would never have gotten bodies in the seats of the movie theaters if it had focused exclusively on the local population. In fact, the real family was Spanish, but they changed them to British and did the movie in English for that reason. The producers, director, writer, editor and others making the film were Spanish. But it’s important that so many people learned about what happened by seeing the film.
And in terms of focusing on those who suffered the most, it wasn’t just Thailand. 230,000 people in 13 countries were killed by the tsunami. It was horrific for every single one of them and there are powerful stories for all of them. Indonesia had 20 times more deaths than Thailand. That doesn’t mean that every movie about the tsunami has to be about Indonesia.
This film is one of the most accurate stories put on film. The details that were changed were largely done because they were too brutal or overwhelming to put in a movie. For example, the tsunami stripped them of all of their clothing. So the actors would have had to be naked for a significant portion of the film.
In the end, it’s an amazing movie with incredible acting telling a heart-wrenching true story. You don’t have to watch it. But you may be missing something incredible for an oversimplified reason.
@@AhzpayneIn Thailand, 8,000 people died. And 2,000 of them were European tourists. What happened to each of those 8,000 people (as well as the other quarter of a million who died in other countries) is significant and worthy of being told.
Despite all it's inaccuracies, this movie is still incredible and fun to watch. It also has a great message and narrative because a lot of people's reactions would be similar to what's shown in the movie. Politicians ignoring the truth, idiots recording what's happening instead of seeking safety and other's following the larger groups of people instead of the more knowledgeable ones.
love this movie! Dennis Quaid and jake Gyllenhaal are awesome and the whole ice age disaster is rarely done in movies.

Thank you Jen. While this is not (in my opinion) one of Roland Emmerich's best efforts, yet he does what he does best. When Hollywood needs to destroy the planet in a most painful way, they call in old Rollie.

For a true horror, watch The Day After....1982 TV movie about Nuclear War. Truly terrifying, since it was about what would really happen if the bombs fell😊

I read an article saying this scenario is quite possible, if the melting ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic cause a disruption in the North Atlantic Current, as stated in the movie. However, it would happen over the course of about 100 years. So if it started when you were 20, when you were like 70 you would notice that Europe is a LOT colder than it used to be. 😲
Most worrisome aspect of this is exactly what the movie depicted more subtly:
The models relied upon as "factual" are all theory.
And things like timelines are just guesswork.
We truly have no idea what timeline might ensue with an abrupt disruption of the salinity and/or currents in our oceans.

Yup. But you could have a temporary cooling effect, if the transatlantic current is disrupted.
(but I think ultimately it would warm up again as the trend of global warming continues.)
Regardless we definitely need to continue to adopt zero emission tech so that we sidestep the worst of it. SOME global warming effect is unavoidable at this point and is in fact already happening. But we still need to press on, as little pollution as possible, while maintaining the same standard of living. 🙂

Great reaction Jen. 2012, San Andreas and the Core are some you might like because you also have to just take them with a grain of salt as well. But the CGI in them is pretty good.
The Core is most definitely not worth a watch. It's completely ludicrous.
While you could defend some of the physics behind The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012, there's nothing realistic about The Core, or that stupid travel through the earth's core. And also why it has such low scores.
OK, say we buy into the central premise of the film (dodgy CGI wolves and all), They're trapped in the library and start setting up a room in order to survive.
So the first thing Jake does is tear down the curtains, curtains that will retain heat. They then decide to burn books, OK, excellent. UMM, what are those books sat on? Shelves you say, shelves made out of what looks to be some very excellent hard wood, which would certainly provide way more BTUs than your average copy of the tax code. They should have arranged the couches around the fire and used the books to build a heat reflector behind them and burnt the shelving and the furniture and been warm and toasty.
Dennis Quaid's smile at the end is golden. One of the best movie endings.

Regarding the burning of the books, it's actually one of the dumbest parts of the movie. There's a great deal of furniture in the library that would burn hotter, longer, and easier than the books. You can say that they ignored science in the name of making a movie about freezing half the world, but any Boy Scout could tell you that you don't make a fire out of paper when there's all that wood around you.

A bit of an underrated disaster movie, I've seen it a number of times, so glad you reacted to it.
If you want another (a bit) underrated disaster movie suggestion, try 'Volcano' from 1997. It's one of my favorites.
Volcano has to be one of my favourite 90s movies. it's just such a bizarre wacky concept and it's kind of campy and crazy, quintissentially 90s imo
Yeah, Volcano is great. Knows how silly it is and has Tommy Lee Jones in full on Tommy Lee Jones mode. Also enjoy the suggestion throughout that LA wholeheartedly deserves to be Volcanoed.
Volcano is fun, but I still prefer Dante's Peak.

The thing about the science this film's disaster is based around is that it's very solid in its base concept: Ocean water becoming desalinated because of melting arctic freshwater ice having a detrimental effect on the ocean currents that are the secondary driving force behind planetary weather and a primary reason why far north locations such as British Columbia have warmer climates along their coasts. The time scale is wildly off, being a much slower and more gradual process and not the 'a switch was flipped so we have two weeks to live' sort of deal used in the film. The massive temperature drops the Brits in their monitoring station noted aren't the sort of thing that can happen over anything less than a century or so of constant heat loss.

This was the movie I realised that my nan loved disaster movies. She normally liked ghost movies, or documentaries. One day I put this on for her. I even asked her about an hour in if she wanted me to turn it off and she said no, she was loving it. So I started getting more disaster movies for her.
The first signs of that already happen at the gulfstream, hurricans getting stronger over the years, floods higher and more often... so watch out for the weather always and signs in the news

It's a decent watch if you keep it in perspective. While technically the premise might be possible, it's highly unlikely. Nice to see your level headed about these things. 2012 is kind of the same kind of movie and an interesting watch. Some other disaster movies I think you would like are "Earthquake 1974". Very interesting, good cast and a much more likely scenario. "Dante's Peak" with Pierce Brosnan and "Volcano" with Tommy Lee Jones.
2012 and The Core are just as good as this film. Exaggerated science dooming scenario films, you'll enjoy them both as well. Deep Impact and this film is my favourite out of all these films, all still fun to watch.

Great movie! Good thing us Canadians can handle super cold weather, even if we hate it lol!
The premise of this movie is outrageous, but it is very engaging story telling. Also, the science plot hole is kind of sort of covered early in the movie with Jack explaining that the worst is generations away, then months, then weeks, then days, with total shock that it can happen this fast. No climatologist thinks it can happen like this, but for a disaster movie, sometimes you have to go for the impossible disaster.
The most terrifying thing about this movie is that the science is 100% accurate. Although unlikely, the speed at which it happens in the story COULD be accurate. We dont actually know how fast the initial process is. Remember, we've found mammoths that were flash-frozen with temperate vegetation still in their mouths!

This is normal weather in Alberta.
In the last couple of years, Edmonton during January&February has a temperature as low as around -37 celsius and with the WindChill of below -55. Bearable cold if you're inside and that the furnace is working. With the incentive to move into converting&using a heat pump, not sure how a heat pump will work at those very low temperatures. That Nova Scotia tide rising to 26 feet sounds normal to the Bay of Fundy.
Also if you're going to watch 2012, don't forget to watch the director's cut/deleted scenes/alternate ending for it as it makes a big difference in how the story turned out.
Even though it’s an Emmerich disaster movie and therefore, shall we say, a tad heightened in places, I like that the movie still manages to feel kind of grounded. It at least tries to stay sober about the subject matter, there aren’t really any caricatured characters, the melodrama is pretty restrained and there are no world-saving heroics. Of course, Emmerich couldn’t resist throwing in his favourite trope of the man reconnecting with his estranged son and ex-wife via a heroic response to disaster. He uses that one a lot!
Fun fact 1: when Jake Gyllenhall and co. are running back from the ship, originally the wolves were chasing them back into the library as well as the super freeze. It was only decided very late in the game to have the wolves stay trapped in the ship. This is why when they make it back, Gyllenhall is yelling to shut the door, and they’re all looking worried at the door. The wolves were supposed to be right outside, trying to break in, and we heard them getting frozen.
Fun fact 2: one example of things being “heightened” is that when the VFX team were running the fluid simulation of the big wave that washed through Manhattan, they found that it would completely engulf the library. They had to cheat the height of the library building so the water would wash around but not over it. Other than that, though, the science is bulletproof, honest!

I grew up watching Disaster films and this reminded me so much of The Poseidon Adventure (one of the first reactions of yours I saw) and others from that era. Great acting and a story with real world research added. I also watch movies that aren't "Critically Acclaimed" but ones that entertain me.

I remember watching this movie with my family after renting it from Blockbuster not long after it first came out which means I must have been about 11 years old, and watching it back now I was surprised to see so many recognizable actors that just weren't on my wee lad radar at the time. Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ian Holm, Kenneth Welsh (who gave a great villain performance as Windom Earle in Twin Peaks), even Emmy Rossum who I got familiarized with just a year or so later when my sixth grade class did Phantom of the Opera as the school play.
To answer your question about the freezing point of fuel. It's mostly Kerosene, which leads to roughly -50C. The roughly part means that there's other stuff in there which can offset that somewhat, both up and down. So, cold, damned cold.
I might have said this on the team America video. The South Park guys had an idea to make this movie in puppet form and then release it on the day after this movie was released, and call it "the day after the day after tomorrow"😅

2012 was a fun movie to watch. I also remember enjoying Dante's Peak (1997) with Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton; it was generally based off of what happened when Mount St. Helen erupted in the US back at the beginning of the 80's.
Another disaster movie that's always haunted me is Earthquake (1974), perhaps because I was so young when I saw it. I saw a rerun of it on TV when I was 5 or 6, and I just remember it being really scary (probably isn't these days, but I was little, lol). Not sure why I've never rewatched it, but if you want to react to it, I'll watch it with you! *peeks out from behind covers* 🙈😶🌫🙃
I agree with you about the over the top plot and the cheesy acting, but it’s at least an enjoyable way to kill a couple of hours and give your brain a break.
This is a great movie. Lots of fun to watch, a solid adventure. It did pretty well when it came out, well enough that South Park spoofed it in one of their episodes at the time. Ironically, it's one of the only episodes that Matt and Trey admit didn't age too well, in hindsight. Which is saying a lot, coming from the kings of being anything but PC.

Researchers are indeed nuts, they have dedicated years of time to their work and seeing it lost would be like like when you finally finish your entire thesis and the computer then catches fire.

Hi Jen 👋🏻 Scotland here🏴 One thing that REALLY bugged me is when Ian Holm is watching football, its the Champions League here in europe and the 2 teams are Manchester United (England) & Celtic (Scotland) Celtic play in Green & White hoops and they are depicted as blue in the film which is highly offensive as our fiercest rivals (Rangers) play in blue.. annoying!!!!😂

Not sure what you mean about the science, it's way more accurate that most other disaster movies like 2012 or The Core.

- Ocean currents changing due to fresh water from polar ice and drastically changing normal weather patterns - Check, very realistic
I was gonna comment about how i was across the street when they filmed the approaching cold scene in front of the stone steps (it was the Bank of Montreal, btw), but now all i can do is laugh at the "just pounding those nuts" line 🤣🤣🤣

It's actually one of my favorite movies. The science is obviously exaggerated, but there's no evil bad guys for the sake of evil bad guys. The politicians might be jerks, but they're perfectly realistic. It's a fun movie to watch, the tense scenes are gripping, and that theme song is a delight to listen to.

You made a good observation in the beginning- it's been pointed out that disaster movies all start with people ignoring the scientists.
I live above that line on the map, Jen, so I would've been in the same boat as you. Looks like Mexico's going to have to build a wall to keep the Americans out. Scientifically speaking, this movie does have a lot of problems, but it is a fun, action-packed movie. Did you recognize Sela Ward, who played the wife as the wife of Harrison Ford in The Fugitive?
For another good disaster movie, you should check out Volcano (1997), with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche.

Jen, have to seen the 1983 movie “The Day After?” It has Jason Robards, JoBeth Williams, John Lithgow, and Steve Guttenburg. It was a made for TV movie that scared the crap out of us 80’s kids, and pretty much anyone who watched it. It’s about people trying to survive a full scale nuclear war, and it’s disturbing to say the least. Our schools went back to nuke drills after it came out, just to remind us that we could still die in a nuclear war at any moment. It was the American nuclear war wake up movie like “Threads 84’” was for the Brits.
2012 you REALLY have suspend belief and just go with the flow. It's kind of like the 70s disaster flix. Over the top but still keeps you watching til the end. At least in my opinion.

I never saw this one. I was looking for a good movie to watch and this one has caught my eye. Seeing the Statue Of Liberty is a bit shocking it looks like the perfect Christmas Eve movie!
