Now I have to go back and check all the pennies for rim errors like the one's you have shown. I have seen these while looking for errors and varietys, and didn't think much about them. Now I am armed with new knowledge. Good topic.
Thanks for all the cool info on numismatics like always. I know of one reason they put the reeded edge on in the past. If you noticed all the coins that have reeded edges used to have a silver content in them one exception the war nickel. People used to sand the edges of a coin because they were silver and worth money. They put the reeded edged on so if someone was sanding the edges people could notice it.
It's kind of stupid though because you don't know if that person shaved it or the person who owned it before. So I don't see how that was the reason. Not saying your lying but if that's their reasoning it don't make sense.
@CECILE PUCKHABER there's info out there just inquire on why they put the reeds on the edges. People would sand the edge so that it wouldn't be noticed right away. With the reeded edge you can see it right away if they were being sanded down. When they took the silver out of the coins they kept it after not to sure why. It might have been for vending machines and stuff like that so the machines could still tell the difference between each one.
Very nice to explain in your channel, in UA-cam' FOR DICUSING ABOUT ERROR. COIN. YOUR BE THEONE, TO FERFORM, FOR EVERY SEE YOUR VLOG. THANKS AND SUPPORT YOU., GOD BLESS SAFE AND HEALTHY FAMILY LIFE.
I look at the Dollar coins which I still have some to check out. I never thought to look at the lower mint coins, unless it's something that stands out. Interesting video. Have a great week.
Hey there i appreciate all ur videos I've learned a lot from u buddy. I have a question is there such thing of a 90% silver 1966 kennedy half experimental coin?
I have a 2021 D Tuskegee Airmen with what appears to be no reeded edge. The face and arm of the reverse airman also looks like it’s smooth on what is otherwise a very nice condition coin (near mint). I have no clue on its rarity or even how it got this way. Thanks for the video which enlightened me to the issues surrounding mint edge errors.
Excellent and superb videos , Thank you Shaun for this wonderful segment about coin error. It was a very rare variety or coin error and yet I have one of this error in the reed of a coin . Yes I have a 1977 d mint mark in which in obverse , reeded , and reverse has an error of this coin . The only thing i wish is how can i send a picture of it . Again thank you very much for having this kind of video you made.
Hi. I have a question due to not seeing what i was looking/hoping to see during your video here. My question is..... I have a Washington quarter that is totally flat around the outer rim or as you call it "Reading lines". SO... (Would my coin be an error coin due to missing those lines or maybe struck on a different planchet ??????
Thank-you for posting the video. I have a couple of 1972 pennies that I saved because the rim area is double stamped. I figured it was an error, but was unsure if it had any value.
What about a 1940 wheat penny that has no rim whatsoever? Smooth and even edge but does have a little bend on part. Would this have been done with a tool and the bend from a grasping tool? Or could it possibly be a mint error?
I got a 64 super shiny quarter back with some change a couple years ago. I first heard it, then I seen how pretty it was. It just stood out and wlhen I touched it I could feel how defined the reeding was. The coin isn't worn at all. The area to the right of Washington's head is thicker and the reeding is wider. The left edge is comparable to most other quarters tho there's a slight discolored depression in the surface. compared to the rest of it. Would this be an example of a thinning rim? I've held onto it and kept it in a sandwich bag folded around it, just to keep it from being scratched and banged around. I have a few hundred wheat pennies, a cold coin, some buffalo nickels, 2 v nickles, a couple walking liberty's, mercury dimes some half dollars but this quarter has been my favorite just because it's a little warped but still has the best finish. The 2022 dimes, when new, have the closest match to the coloring of it. My mom passed away unexpectedly on May 1st, she had just lost her life insurance. If that quarter could help me pay off the balance of her funeral costs it would be such a blessing! I may part with all of them to get her a Headstone as well. I wasn't sure what to call the defect and your video gives me a way of describing it and to understand how it came to be. Thank you and blessings to everyone reading comments and searching for an explanation. ❤️
I was hoping to find the error at 10:00 I have a dime with a blob on the edge. There is rust around the bottom of the blob, but also rust on the edge nearby. I'm wondering if it's this error or someone may have soldered a bead on it for some kind of decoration.
Can you tell me what kind of money a half dollar smooth edge all around the edge no lines could bring??? Cuz I got 5 of them out of rolls I was searching!
My "problem" is I have saved coinage for years, and have not examined any of it for errors. It may not seem like much to some, but I have about $600. In pennies (Sorry... Lincoln Cent coins). A little math gets me 60,000 coins to look at. At 1 second apiece, That's over 16 hours. But I imagine it'll be more like 5-10 seconds. So I use 7.5x16.666 and get 125 hours. I guess That's what error-coin collecting is all about. Sorry if I wasted your time.
I am running around like a chicken with my head cut off, just trying to name, what it is about my coin so I can move on to see if I should move on.... thank you ever so kindly you gave my error a name, and now at the very least I can talk to some one about it.... I tried Heritage and they sent me back a response saying its crap and I can go ahead and spend it!?! What the crap.... it might, or might not be worth "BIG" bucks but I do know as much research as I've been doing, its unique, to say the least... I want to thank you though for your time and effort in helping us who are not as knowledgeable, may God bless you and yours
I found what looks like a penny planchet that was seated in a dime collar to have the upset rim on the inside of the edge of the coin on both sides but no image of Roosevelt on it at all so I'm assuming it was a type 1 penny planchette struk on dime collar?? I can't find a thing about this error but I will be sending into variety Vista to see what they say
Rim cuds are about the only errors I find actually. For some reason I've been lucky with them hunting for west point quarters and coming across rim cuds instead. To be 100% factual these could turn up in coin hunts of rolled coins or pocket change but 90% of the time it's some sort of post mint damage and not a mint error at all. Finds like these are pretty rare to happen. For instance the two rim cuds I've found this year I've searched 20 boxes of quarters, or 40,000 coins. The more you know to look for the more you will find of course but still it ain't easy and like I said usually it's some sort of post mint damage that happened and not a mint error.
I have found 2 quarters, one has no lines on the edge and the other has partial lines mainly on one side. What type of error is this considered? I am new in looking for errors. 1993D and 1974.
I was going through the a roll of Cents and found a rim that totally broken off a cent.? Is it still an error without the cent? Because the cent it broke off of was not there in the roll, Do it's just a ring missing about a half inch...
What about Actual Digits (Dates) or Letters Stamped and stand out and not inverted or Incuse on the "Actual Side" of the Rim . Again , Not on OBV. or REV.. it is on the sides of some coins I've come across ??
I've got a 2016 cent that's struck on a nickel, I think. On the bottom of the face the edge of the coin is jagged long metal. The back of the shield cent. The shield is somewhat blue like a blueing agent people who want to make there guns prettier. I would love to send you some pics. I don't know enough words to accurately describe the coin.
I actually only remember seeing the RR rim on half dollars...not smaller denoms.... Just pulled a state quarter out the other day---a BU with a rim cud, so this is timely!
What about the coins that don't have the full rim around them I have come across quite a bit of pennies where the rim lies are off the pennies and some have partially rimmed are they worth anything just asking. Thanks
I have this 1986D Lincoln penny that has a crazy rim kind of like a susan b Anthony dollar rim it's really hard to explain how dobi send pics to get it checked out?
WoW I have pennies that have a 2nd & 3rd collar and I'm lucky to have saved them , my coin guy is suppose to be smart about coins he told me that someone took these coin and we're trying to turn them into trick coins for magic tricks its a good thing I kept them and a few are Wheaties and later dates.
I found a 1997 dime .. the edge is smooth front and back and in the middle is ruff almost sharp .. definitely weird haven’t seen one like it before.. not sure if someone made it that way
Silver hound I have a wheat cent and it looks like the rim was cut out untill it hits the middle on each side the edge is still there obviously much thinner though due to this damage/error also I have a Morgan with a seemingly strike through or greace it’s a gorgeous coin but caved in near the tentacles also have another bie wheat that has this same thing by liberty 🗽
Is there a numismatic term and value of what looks like someone took a smaller diameter coin and used it to scratch a circular scratch pattern on a larger diameter coin? That's the only way to describe what I'm talking about. Not sure what would cause such a perfectly round scratch.
What do you call a coin where one side's rim is completely GONE! It looks almost as though it has been sanded away! ( And perhaps that is what someone actually did for some unknown reason ).... and it appears SO FLAT and worn that it actually effects the lettering to a point! Any thoughts?
I just found a penny with a silver looking rim on the front not from A dryer. It's sharp like if you run your finger across the penny. And it's almost if I use my finger nail hard enough I can lift it up which would bend. Idk how else to explain. I found 2 one reddit one of them definitely was rubbed and didn't have this.. the second one looked like mine it's also a almost perfect 1995 and has some maybe doubling idk.
Now I have to go back and check all the pennies for rim errors like the one's you have shown. I have seen these while looking for errors and varietys, and didn't think much about them. Now I am armed with new knowledge. Good topic.
Thank's, I'm soaking it up.
The 77 dime 16:50 min you can see someone playing golf on his head that rim is him swinging his club awesome
The reaspn for the rippled edge is because people used to shave silver or gold off of coins.
Very good Mr. Blue
👍 Correct

I have a railroad one!!

Thanks, Shawn!
I have a 1983 d Washington quarter that has no reading on it at all. Mostly copper all around it. Being new does it have value
I have a 2021 D Tuskegee Airmen with what appears to be no reeded edge. The face and arm of the reverse airman also looks like it’s smooth on what is otherwise a very nice condition coin (near mint). Hi blue ridge silver hound. I found a1980 p quarter looks like copper bleeding through clad layer . The rim seams to have a y in a pair of Reeds ??

My question is..... I have a Washington quarter that is totally flat around the outer rim or as you call it "Reading lines". SO... (Would my coin be an error coin due to missing those lines or maybe struck on a different planchet ??????
Reeded edge or lettered edge was used to prevent shaving off the outside of silver coins.
Awesome video. So interesting an fun to find these errors
So u just answered that with that cud coin , mine has three , makes it cool now.
Thank-you for posting the video. I have a couple of 1972 pennies that I saved because the rim area is double stamped. I figured it was an error, but was unsure if it had any value.
😲 Learned so much! Thanks man!
I’ve come across Kennedy half’s with all copper color with straight edges
Love errors like that, I have found some really nice ones. Great video 👍
Thanx BR for sharing that info an I have found alot of coins with off strikes I just set aside
Wow really awesome Coins video!!!
I have a 1993 American Silver Eagle with a fin rim. I always wonder if it is considered an important or noteworthy minting error.
What about a 1940 wheat penny that has no rim whatsoever? Smooth and even edge but does have a little bend on part. Would this have been done with a tool and the bend from a grasping tool? Or could it possibly be a mint error?
What an interesting video. Thank you so much! :)

Good video. Disappointed you didn't mention clamshell errors. One of the neater errors, in my opinion.
I was going through the a roll of Cents and found a rim that totally broken off a cent.? Is it still an error without the cent?
Because the cent it broke off of was not there in the roll, Do it's just a ring missing about a half inch...
I have a 2009 s proof Sacagawea $1 that has the mint mark doubled.
Should I send it in to get verified.
What is it when the picture of a coin is higher that the rim so if you lay it on its side it will spin

Just this morning I came across a quarter with a smooth edge all away around it. No signs of "ridges"?
Oops, tilted collar. Not the edge.
I was searching half dollar rolls and found 5 smooth edge coins without the lines. Can you tell me what they might be worth
