I think it makes sense why comic book movies back then especially the X-men movies had to look very grounded and that was mainly because Hollywood still had memories of Batman & Robin.
Part of it also has to do with the fact that comics were still seen as children's entertainment. This was the only way to have the general public take them seriously (at least to a lot of people)
Instead of flashy neon colors, everything was monochromatic and dark, giant fantasy sets became real dirty streets, pop songs were changed to grunge and techno, over the top performances became dialed back, colorful rubber costumes became black unitarian leather, of futuristic metallic fashion. Just this sense of "DON'T do what Batman & Robin did. Don't make it too colorful or too corny for casual viewers."
@AgentGodzillaRP1DoFP had pretty good costumes compared to the originals. Not flashy enough maybe but not generic like most other X-Men movies. And Apocalypse actually has some perfect costumes but they are on miscast characters or underutilized. I’m kinda glad they didn’t do the comic suits yet so we can see them in Phase 7

That "Black leather?" dig from Cyclops in X-Men 97 is very powerful and biting, meaning that the next adaptation in the MCU will veer more into the comics aspect as evidenced by Wolverine, Prof. X, and Beast's looks
I might actually like the Black uniforms, but after watching that clip, I have to say that it was a perfect moment of a joke coming full circle and indicative of where the MCU-Rebooted X-Men will go for their designs.
Honestly for me, as a kid, it felt like I was watching a horror movie at times. Especially the flashback with David Banner, the frog exploding, the way Hulk is screaming while hiding in the shadows, and the hulk dogs. Before I watched the Nolan Batman films, this was the comic book movie that made me feel like a grown-up watching it as a kid because of how dark and serious it was. But in a way, the Hulk should have a psychological horror tone considering he was inspired by Boris Karloff's Frankenstein monster and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and the movie's tone is probably what those stories would've been like if they were made today.
I absolutely love the comic book X-Men designs And the final suits in X-Men Apocalypse prove that they can work in live action, but the black suits are kind of nostalgic for me.
Cyclops’ suit looked great that should have been the suit for everyone Wolverine’s looked alright too yellow though should have had the blue or more brown to break it up as it just looks like his skin But Jean’s didn’t look great with the yellow, red and blue and her hair being blonde

The reason Jean was blonde in the concept art was because they were attempting to court Helen Hunt for the role. They probably were just going to send her pics with the character looking visually more like her to butter her up to take the part. I'm pretty sure she was Bryan's first choice to play Jean, too.

Not every outfit needs to be striking, professional, or cooler to be a hero. Children, teens, and young adults can be heroes too. Either in fiction or real life. Some outfits can be cute, simple, innocent, or creative to be a hero.
I don’t have a problem with the black but they could’ve added yellow trims and piping along the sleeves and chest and maybe made the suit midnight blue. The designs themselves look great.
I feel the Ultimate X-Men comics and X-Men: Evolutions show were good examples of giving the characters yellow outfits but still making them dark and grounded. What's weird is that Bryan Singer claimed is that they were planning on giving them more crazier suit designs for the sequels. (But obviously it wasn't the case until First Class.)
As a kid I didn’t care, as I grew up and got into comics I could see why people hated them, but to me I just head cannoned that the movies took place in the Ultimate Universe 😂
There are designs by Alex Ross you can find online. The Superior Spider-Man costume was based on the original suit design. Green Goblin ironically looked more like the comics but more teal and black instead of green and purple and more medieval inspired fashion like a hooded cloak and a sword. Once Sam Raimi came along in 2000, he requested a classic red and blue suit. The 2002 video game even had unlockable skins based on the original designs.
Right, because black leather in combat situations is "practical" 😂. In The Matrix it made sense, because they were fighting in a digital world, and weren't supposed to be realistic. In Blade it made sense, because it was still armor that was practical. Here, it makes zero sense whatsoever 😂.
