Magneto is a character that evolves to represent every single voice that was brave enough to be heard, a voice that is born as a response to pain, suffering and oppression.
Magneto is a good man with good intentions who let them lead him to hell. Then through will power and the help of good friends he pulls himself out and tries to be better.
I unironically love First Class for this cold banger of a line. You know, as soon as Charles says it that it wasn't going to end well. People have been arguing for decades if he's a hero or a true villain. But he is the perfect anti-villain. Imo he has better motivation and is more sympathetic in his plight than the MCU's Thanos or even BP's Killmonger. While Killmonger grew up a victim and has never allowed himself to be one since, Erik tries; he genuinely loves Charles and wants to live in the world that his bestfriend invisions and actively tries to forge from the chaos and hate of the world. But it is when he lets his guard down that Magneto is always betrayed not by Charles himself but the humans he protects. The ironic thing about "never again" line is Magneto is one of the only villains to repeatedly open up, only for the world to seemingly prove him righteous and justified in becoming the same kind of monster he cowered from in Germany.
I think there's a much simpler way to describe Magneto: a man without hope. Magneto has given up. He's decided that the best case scenario, peaceful coexistence, is so unattainable that it's not worth fighting for and instead lives by the same us vs them mentality that makes that dream impossible to begin with. He's taking the easy way out and, in doing so, becomes as much a part of the problem as the humans because a dream like that can't be achieved unless both sides believe in it.
I love how you stated that what he SAYS is right, but what he DOES is wrong. That's something good writers are able to highlight in both Magneto and Xavier. Magneto is a man who has seen humanity repeat the same cycle of cruelty over and over and over again, and became so focused on that to the point he couldn't see anything else. And sadly in that he often does more harm than good. I know people say it's dumb to keep finding ways to de-age him to keep him tied to his origins, but having that be his origin is part of what makes him so powerful...and imo when handled well, the longer he's alive the more he'll see this cycle repeat and in a way it can be used to further his character and the explorations of his anger. The fact he keeps being proven correct is in part why he keeps going. And personally if they can continue on this general trajectory of improvement for him, it works all the better and I would love it all the more.
Honestly the title seems more fitting to Apocalypse and Doctor Doom. I been respecting Magneto more lately because of how great of a character he is, what he represents and what he wants to prevent. He can go from a sympathic character to a extremist, but you will understand his motives. He even wanted to stop the Marvel Zombies from spreading to other universes and he sacfriced himself to do it.
I mean in different ways it fits all three of them perfectly. They all strive for the same thing, but for such drastically different reasons that it lets each of them stand in their own space.

I love this video, and you highlight for me something that I have been grappling with all my life; monsters and gods are by definition, inhuman. Their worth is exclusively determined by the benevolent (or malevolent) nature of their interaction with humans. A human has intrinsic value and can always be redeemed or make more mistakes as long as they live. So of course as long as Magneto imagines himself to be either god or monster, of course he cannot acknowledge his faults or accept forgiveness for them, because that is something that only humans can do.
To add to this idea, another flaw in magneto is that he genuinely believes mutants are without faults/are entirely morally pure. If magneto gets his way and all humans are gone, he honestly believes everything will be total peace/kubaiya. But mutants are human, they have the potential for selfishness, greed, want for power and can have the same selfish/destructive acts with or without “humans” (same shit different color). Even with aliens species far advanced then earth they have the same conflicts & wars as anyone on earth but magneto can’t see that beyond his moral superiority mutants mentally are no different than any person yet he pretends they are

I can’t hate Magneto. I understand why he feels the way he feels. As a Holocaust survivor, he and his people treated like trash and were being whipped out because in the German’s eyes, Jewish people weren’t born the “right way”. It is no different from how mutants are being treated. Humans are demonizing mutants because they sees them as people who aren’t born once again, “the right way”. This is the Sage's Rain I've always wanted. I think Sokka is the first video of you're I've watched, but but I've loved them all. But this?? *chefs kiss*
So glad you brought up X-Men Red and Resurrection of Magneto; the reveal that there are *two* lists of names is one of the most beautiful moments in all of fiction, for me, honestly.
Goddamn. Sage videos, f***in, rip. So immensely hard. I’ve been slowly getting back into Marvel comics and this format is so gratifying. Both for catching up on all the years I’ve missed to a degree, but more importantly, being delivered a concise, emotional and earnest vehicle for the themes and messages Magneto represents. Your voice feels like the audio equivalent of a fine velvet. Looking forward to the next vid, and I hope you’re doing well.
Mr. Sinister = Villain: Doing the wrong thing for the wrong reasons. Bad intentions/Bad actions. Magneto = Anti-Villain: Doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. Good intentions/Bad actions. Anti-Hero: Doing the right thing for the right reasons using bad methods. Hero: Doing the right thing for the right reasons using good methods.
I don't believe anyone chooses to become a monster, but really, life can be so cruel to people who just want a life for themselves. Magneto is not a true monster, but not a true hero either, more like a villain/anti-hero. The Master of Magnetism had more than one dirty card thrown at him, but he's a survivor, as many Jews are. I haven't thought of it before, but if I had so much power and so much guilt like he does, I'd lose it. It's a wonder Magneto doesn't completely lose himself or lose sight of what he's fighting for. I don't really agree with Magnus, but it is true how susceptible humans are to hate and violence, and every one of us has to fight that part of our minds every day as well as physical threats.
Hey sage I didn’t watch this video yet but just wanna let you know that you make great content Amd taught me things that wouldn’t cross my mind so thank you
This was a VERY well-done and researched video! It’s clear that you have a love for the character . I love him too, but I do think that it’s that he stayed dead in the comics . X-Men #3 or X-Men #25 (When Charles shut his mind down .) were really good ending points for him . His arc should really have ended there . There really isn’t much else that can be done with him in the comics at this point .
I wouldn't really say that Magento is a monster with a god complex he's not Lex Luthor or Doctor Doom unlike these characters Magento actually cares about his lackies and even the X-men. What makes Magento such great character is that he's a sympathetic villain/anti hero who you don't necessarily agree with but understand. And that's why he's my favorite Marvel villain.
He literally calls his race Homo SUPERIOR. Just because he has sympathetic motives doesn't make him any less of a monster that has legimately attempted genocide on humanity multiple times in comics.
In the current world’s social climate, I see his points, and I agree with many. Though, I wouldn’t wish my suffering on the ones causing my loved ones pain.. eye for an eye ends only in a blind world.
I only thought that only back in the Lee/Kirby era were he was kinda a moustache twirling villain and it was long before he was revealed to be a holocaust survivor.
In reality those who speak out aren’t held as heroes, they are killed and have their stories changed after their death then given a movie. Magneto doesn’t want that ending
When you have nothing left to lose, and giving up isn't an option, two things happen to you. The first is you give up everything you used to be, just for a chance to escape the cycle. The second is that you throw yourself headlong into what you believe in. There is no inherent good or bad in the person you leave as, or even if you leave at all. Adversity will consume you if it gets too close
I was a little worried when I started the video, but you slammed a home run. You nailed every nuance, every point, every bit that makes Magneto, Magneto. Thank you for showing him the respect he deserves, instead of the bashing or misconceptions/misunderstanding that he usually gets. It is so easy for people to just pigeon hole him as a straight up villian, and that is not him. Yes, he has had his moments. But as you showed here, there is so much more to the character and he deserves to be seen as such. I truly hope the new run of the X-Men continues Ewing's work on Magneto and doesn't ignore it. The Resurrection of Magneto was beautifully done and the rest of The Fall of X kept in line with it. The character deserves that much, at least.
I need to turn Magneto into my next major campaign villain, that hurt yet just core moral goal is perfect if my party chooses to fight against it, otherwise they could join him or try to compromise or even save him
Great video, and it’s a hard watch causes one of my top three characters of all time. I don’t mind critical lenses when examining magneto because he is a man with flaws, but rarely is the world around him held to the same standard, he’s lived through two genocides and has seen humans put their humanity aside and become monsters, and monsters are rarely changed by the high moral ground of the noble man.
SPOILER (do mot read if you haven't finished xmen 97. What always makes me chose magnis over charles is that in the fight with Sebastian charles tells magneto that for all his talk of ruling the world it is the world that ruls him, but its not the world magnis can control the world it is humans that (lets be honest) are far weaker than him. But what males me side between the lesser of two evils is that charles is an altruist he is naive and untouched with the true state and affairs of humans while magneto is in my opinion a utalitarian he doesn't care about the decorative approach but only that it warrants favourable results. Charles tried to kill him by shutting him down mentally he would've killed him if cyclops didn't step in then he probed into his mind and changed his memories charles said he was just a boy when it happened and couldn't even remember tgeir faces which is untrue we say that his parents death scared him deeply he remembered it all, charles said that killing is detestable yet was ready to kill his own kind yet refused to get rid of those people that will ultimately in every timeline be the climax for all that befalls mutant kind. Magnis is a necessary evil.
I saw Magneto’s backstory as an example of humanity creating its own monsters with him having suffered the worst parts of human nature (I.E. bigotry, princess and the hatred for those who are different from you) I mean his out look on humanity as an objective whole was shaped pretty much by nurture rather than nature with his outlook be a result of people showing him hatred and fear…first for his religious and cultural background and then for his mutant abilities.27:43
Magneto needs help, he's been through a lot in his life and his reaction is predictable. He's definitely no hero, he needs to pay for his crimes and find a better way than all out war all the time. He'd let every human suffer over the crimes of the few, Charles path maybe harder to walk but is the right one.
I think that Magneto is a monster. He is an intriguing character with a fair bit of nuance to him, but that does not redeem him. I reckon that was the point of the character, to show that because of how the world treated him, he intends to treat the world the same way, which just ends up justifying the fear that people have in the face of the mutant population. It's the cycle of hate and hurt. People like Magneto are the reason mutants are hated and feared, and he uses this fact to justify his own hatred of humanity. He didn't do what a good person would do and break the cycle of hate, he propagates it. It's the old justice/vengeance dichotomy. He doesn't want justice, he wants vengeance. "They hurt us, so now we hurt them". That line of thinking births only more hate and pain. Magneto is a murderer of mutants and non-mutants alike, a racial supremacist and he uses his tragic background as justification for acting just like the people who hurt him. He has the power to kill countless people all by himself, and the moral and emotional understanding of a three-year-old. That is a caustic combination, and a terrific villain. He claims to have seen "humanity at its worst", yet fails to see that he IS humanity at its worst. He is what happens when evil thinks it's good. If he does turn things around, then he must take responsibility. Saving a life does not undo a life taken, a good deed does not erase an evil one. He is looking to redeem himself, and that is good. But he is focusing on leaving his past evil behind instead of accepting that all of him, Eric, Magnus and Magneto, were and are the same person. A murderer who, without ever going to jail, saves a life is still a murderer avoiding justice. These are the laws that govern humankind, and Magneto still refuses to acknowledge that he is not above, but among mankind. This is how I see it, and no-one is obliged to agree. Just how I see his characterisation. An excellent villain, but a villain nonetheless.
Nah I wouldn’t say he’s a monster, he’s a survivor of a race that have been hunted down like wild animals for just co-existing in a world which both sides believes they are superior and have waged war against each other, he’s lost his blood related family from the evils of mankind and doesn’t want to see anyone else suffer but takes drastic measures to never see that past repeat itself again
Yeah it’s hard to call him a monster when just his existence is considered a threat to humankind. Rarely in history has asking “please stop” has ever stopped the bully
What did you think of the movie version of Magneto? Personally, I like the Ian Mckellan version more. The only problem that I had with him was in the second X-Men movie. I prefer a villainous Magneto , but he seemed to be a little bit TOO extreme in that movie! Did he leave Charles to what, DIE in Cerebro? That felt kind of - Wrong! The first two movies didn’t really touch much on the friendship between Charles and Eric. By the way, I still hate that Max name . I always see him as Eric of Magnus. Max doesn’t fit him .
Man I love your videos don't stop and as a grate grandson to holocaust survivers and an idf combat soldier i have to say its completely understandable why he became so extreme when you were so weak you cannot let go of the will to be strong
Have you watched the "To Your Eternity" series yet? I would love to hear your thoughts on how the show portrays life and people, and how Fushi accepts it all whether he's ready or not
No one has any right to dictate to the oppressed the means by which they throw off their oppressors. Until Mutants are not an oppressed minority, (the whole point of the whole XMen series) international law very clearly states, "By any means necessary".
So recently I’ve been getting into the animated super hero shows. Any recommendations I really like both the justice leagues so is avengers assemble the same or the X-men shows?
Yh about the line in Quran its two actually not one the first one is "to kill an innocent is to kill the whole world" the second is " to save an innocent person is to save the whole world " Another good one is "its the hearts which are blind not eyes " i take it as refusing to accept thr the Truth or being ignorant and not willing to listen
Magento is a victim who became no different than the people who perpetrated him. Dr Doom is an insecure man who hides behind a mask trying to prove he is the best.

It is no different from how mutants are being treated. Humans are demonizing mutants because they sees them as people who aren’t born once again, “the right way”. It is extermination of people who had to decision in being born the way they are.
Magneto in the 97 x men series definitely stood out as a great character.
More like an hypocrite and an edgy teen inside a old man body.
My second favorite Marvel Villain (Behind Doctor Doom.)
I'm honestly curious, what makes you like Doom more?
@@stupendoushorrendous8258 doom is just that guy the perfect villain to some marvel fans can't blame them tho
@@stupendoushorrendous8258magic and science/his suit/ his country/ his robots/his pettiness/his benevolence. He’s the ultimate comic book villain.
This is the Sage's Rain I've always wanted.
I think Sokka is the first video of you're I've watched, but but I've loved them all. But this?? *chefs kiss*
I love the comparison with Armin and Annie’s conversation it goes perfect with Magneto
Wow, I remember this channel when it was at 14k. Not saying 14k is small but holy hell 440k. Damn, you’re killing it. Really enjoyed the video.
I love your content and was hoping you’d do a video on Magneto, he’s such a complicated character and he’s one of my favourite villains of all time
So glad you brought up X-Men Red and Resurrection of Magneto; the reveal that there are *two* lists of names is one of the most beautiful moments in all of fiction, for me, honestly.
Incredible video about the master of magnetism, liked so much!
Let’s go the goat finally posted
Brilliant video, phenomenal work. Going to share this around.
Awesome another sage’s rain video
The hardest choices require the strongest will.
This is such a wonderful video essay on one of my favorite characters in Marvel. You, friend, have talent!
One of my favorite fictional characters. Great video, the best breakdown I've watched on Magneto.
20:40 a question Stan Lee, calirmont and Jack Kirby never got asked 😢
I haven't seen your channel be recommended to me in months. I'm glad to have found it again today ❤
This might be your best video.
What a great video thanks for making this friend
Magneto and Charles had a massive breakup and decided to make it everybody else’s problem
What makes him the scariest villain? Because deep down you know he's right, but you're scared of agreeing with him. 😨
I’ve never been this early.
Me neither.
Love your content bro
Totally did not kill a lot of innocent people in his crusade
Did you know he attacked and fights Spider-Man sometimes right there's a reason why he calls him Maggie
@OhNoTheFace that's why I said he's not a character you agree with but you understand.
yea he’s not a monster. i just like to lie in my titles
Hey Sage your videos inspired me to make my own fictional story.
Please do Hajime no Ippo!!! Philosophy and viewpoint on this is very insightful
Loved this one
This segment is truly a beautiful Masterclass on arguably the most intriguing, interesting character in the X-MEN landscape of Marvel 💯💯💯
In reality those who speak out aren’t held as heroes, they are killed and have their stories changed after their death then given a movie. Magneto doesn’t want that ending
Yeah he wants the ending where he’s the one killing people.
Great content bro 🔥
I need to turn Magneto into my next major campaign villain, that hurt yet just core moral goal is perfect if my party chooses to fight against it, otherwise they could join him or try to compromise or even save him
Good use of Arcanum music.
2:41 in some of the comics Magneto is given the worst job in the holocaust. Picking apart dead bodies for gold…. Looting corpses…. Against his will.
Cool vid bro.😺
That's an interesting and meaningful journey Magneto has gone through.
Maybe Ben Grimm finally have someone other than moon knight to send his Hanukkah card.
We need a video on Guts and or Griffith!!!
Can Magneto from X men movies kills Homelander from The Boys TV Series?
Yes. In Apocalypse he could destroy the world.
Yes, like it is so easy for the master of magnetics that it's not funny.
Magneto is a nuke and Homelander is a sick baby who wins?
I saw Magneto’s backstory as an example of humanity creating its own monsters with him having suffered the worst parts of human nature (I.E. bigotry, princess and the hatred for those who are different from you)
I mean his out look on humanity as an objective whole was shaped pretty much by nurture rather than nature with his outlook be a result of people showing him hatred and fear…first for his religious and cultural background and then for his mutant abilities.27:43
Xmen 97 made him my fav villian
Magneto needs help, he's been through a lot in his life and his reaction is predictable. He's definitely no hero, he needs to pay for his crimes and find a better way than all out war all the time. He'd let every human suffer over the crimes of the few, Charles path maybe harder to walk but is the right one.
The most Amazing Magneto feat is just in Apocalypse. HE can move the very Earth's core
*KING CRIMSON!!!* 2:08
I Love Magneto.
You do realize that Magnus sees humans like you and me the same way the Nazis viewed the Jews right?
@@mitchellcleveland6182 that’s a stretch, the humans were the antagonists in the x men.
@@WillieEarlSonit’s not a stretch when magneto keeps promoting mutant superiority which I where his cause derails
@@Mammothsaber-4457 i get that, just me personally I’m not gonna hold him to the flame as much as i am the humans because they started this.
Dude your videos are so good and could you do one of gohan up until cell arc plz and thanks
Music: Fma:Brotherhood philosophorum omega
Dude you got to do Charles next
What did you think of the movie version of Magneto? Personally, I like the Ian Mckellan version more. The only problem that I had with him was in the second X-Men movie. I prefer a villainous Magneto , but he seemed to be a little bit TOO extreme in that movie! Did he leave Charles to what, DIE in Cerebro? That felt kind of - Wrong! The first two movies didn’t really touch much on the friendship between Charles and Eric. By the way, I still hate that Max name . I always see him as Eric of Magnus. Max doesn’t fit him .
Pls do a green lantern and flash video
Fantastic BTW
Great video bro.. please do a video on the tv show snowfall.. one of the greatest shows I ever seen
Can we get a dr.doom video he’s my goat
His weird lopsided, asymmetrical cape from the movies (Except the 3rd) has really grown on me
RIP season 2 of xmen 97 :(
Mutants haven't suffered enough to be this righteous. Destroy them all
Man I love your videos don't stop and as a grate grandson to holocaust survivers and an idf combat soldier i have to say its completely understandable why he became so extreme when you were so weak you cannot let go of the will to be strong
Also, as a comics fan, would you ever consider covering aspects of Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing? (If you've read it, that is.)
Have you watched the "To Your Eternity" series yet? I would love to hear your thoughts on how the show portrays life and people, and how Fushi accepts it all whether he's ready or not
Magneto is a monster that wants to be a God with some true points, however Dr Doom is a monster that is in fact a God
No one has any right to dictate to the oppressed the means by which they throw off their oppressors. Until Mutants are not an oppressed minority, (the whole point of the whole XMen series) international law very clearly states, "By any means necessary".
You’re absolutely right, until you have to eventually play diplomacy with those you fought against. “By any means necessary” can cut both ways.
So recently I’ve been getting into the animated super hero shows. Any recommendations I really like both the justice leagues so is avengers assemble the same or the X-men shows?
Can you make a video on homelander
Yh about the line in Quran its two actually not one the first one is "to kill an innocent is to kill the whole world" the second is " to save an innocent person is to save the whole world "
Another good one is "its the hearts which are blind not eyes " i take it as refusing to accept thr the Truth or being ignorant and not willing to listen
Magneto is usually seen as a gary stu amongst fans and get mad when Magneto is portrayed sometimes as an unjust villain supremacist
I think he's a monster and an angel. I think that's what makes him very human
Hey man, I noticed that UA-cam marked your video about Finns love life as made for kids for some reason
What song did you use
Is it true stan lee said he was based off Malcolm x? I do get those vibes from him.
I know the title says Magneto, but I’m quite certain he means Dr Doom.
Magento is a victim who became no different than the people who perpetrated him. Dr Doom is an insecure man who hides behind a mask trying to prove he is the best.
@@petermj1098 At this point Doom is beyond insecure he is the best because everybody runs to him for help and loyality.
@@ExeErdna Jack Kirby confirmed that Doom only has a small scar and still has a very handsome face behind his mask.
