I picked up a tattoo machine for the first time today. I wanted to know how it felt, so I did lining and whatnot on fake skin. I'm an artist in other mediums so I've just been very interested in how different tattooing is. I found this video and thought to myself, "of course there's pooling, it's ink on paper". Then I saw the stars thing and looked back at my fake skin. Holy wow. I can tell a difference between my swooping out lines and my dead stops. Thank you so much for going right back to basics here! I'm all for basics and foundation building, so this was really eye opening!
I do the same thing with a pen, but what i do different is i add a grip to the pen, and put it all together with the machine, so you can get used to the weight of the machine too.. Good vid btw
what i do to practice my line work is . instead of using a stencil printer i will hand make all my stencils helps my with the flow of the tattoo itself. trace it like you were tattooing starting from point A to point B .. great job on your videos tattoo university youve help me in alot of aspects
this is such a fantastic exercise to practice with...it's such a simple method yet i never thought to practice like that with a marker...i do have a question could you use the smaller markers and attach it to your tattoo machine so that you could get use to the weight and vibration of the machine while using the same method shown in the video? or is there a better method for that??? but great video man and great advice to.
The idea is to get used to the technique. Just going back into a line without leaving a dot. Once you see how it is done you can try it with the machine. These things just reinforce proper techniques while tattooing
Great video. Only difference between a sharpie and a tattoo machine is that the machine vibrates which makes it a little more difficult than a Sharpie.
Correct. You can't get the actual feel until you tattoo someone. The idea isn't to train your hand and your muscles with this exercise. It is only to train yourself on the technique. You want to get the lineweight the same without any blobs. It is just to get you in the practice of starting further up the line and not applying downward pressure until you get your hand moving again. Check out the video I did on practice skin on the arm rest. That will help you with the feel of a real tattoo machine.
The sharpie will give you dots if you move a certain way. Tattooing will do the same thing. It is just to reinforce your thought process while you tattoo. It will make you think about using the proper technique. Yes it will help you with muscle memory. So it is not exactly the same but it is a learning tool.

Just go back in and do this technique. Once you are good at it people can't see where the line stopped and started again.
When you start to tattoo you will see that situations call for different direction. You might be forced to go a direction that isn't as comfortable. Due to this I would say practice as much as you can. When you are ready start tattooing. The more you do it the less you think about it and the better you get. You will find yourself going different directions and moving your body around to tattoo.
I usually tattoo in a downward motion. That is the natural movement for your hand. If the movement is awkward or unnatural it will be hard to do a straight line.
Tattoo University I'm a pmu artist in training and I'm getting very discouraged about my curved lines coming out wiggly. I've been practicing and practicing but they still come out wiggly at the end of the curved line. 😔😔😔
Are you going to a point where your hand isn't comfortable any more. If I reach a point where that happens I lift up the needle. Go back into the original line a short distance and start over. This way you continue the line without and your hand isn't struggling at the very end. The way you position your client will also help. If everyone is comfortable things go easier. If you are in an weird position it will be a struggle. You also have to keep your hand steady and at the same depth. Your hand shouldn't be moving up and down. Use the middle finger and rest it against the tip. Slide this finger along the skin as you tattoo. This prevent the machine from moving around. At the end of the line you lift up your hand. When you do this you try not to use your wrist as much. Moving your wrist around gives you wiggly lines.
Great advice. I will try that today on my fake skin. At school we are learning on the Biotouch Merlin rotary gun. I'm using a 6flat for the hair strokes. I have been practicing with a size 1 liner needle as well.
Tattoo University Our teacher has never used a coil machine for pmu but I see lots of pmu artist on IG using them. Any advice on which coil machine would be good for pmu? I hear a lot about the Cheyenne line.
I'm having a hard time remembering what I used. It has been so long since I loaded that. I'm starting to leave the names of the songs I use in the videos information so people know what I used. All I can say is that it probably came from UA-cam Studio.
@@robmorris844 You can have your client move into a better position. You can also move yourself. This is part of the learning process. If you use a movement that is uncomfortable or difficult you get bad line work. If you move yourself or your client to a better position you will get better line work. They aren't as easy to move as a piece of paper, but it is better to tattoo in a position that makes it easier for you.
@@TattooUniversity Yeah i know you can do that to an extent. But you couldn't do that for every line of every individual star, it'd be a bit impractical to have your client move around that much. I can see how it would help your lines i guess. But just I don't think its very practical in reality.

Why are you teaching to move the sharpie downwards, when you should be moving upwards with your machine?
