I noticed that too, and i do my own oil, and my car calls for synthetic so... either regular oil went way down in price or he means for the service. But I've had a couple times where i needed an oil change, and had no way of doing it myself. Unless i crawled through mud. So once i took my own oil and filter and went to a place where this guy charged me $20 to do it. It was after hours and he pocketed the money worked out for both of us i guess. More recently i went to a place, but they refused to use my oil & filter. They also asked $70. So screw that. Couple days later i got ahold of a friend with a garage, he did it for $10. It's ridiculous what they charge at garages though, and mostly it's because everyone wants to make their share off you. There's the garage owner then the mechanics who work for them. That's why they charge like $100 an hour. $100 an hour... then whatever they ask for the parts which might not be top quality either.
@Billybigrigger-ic7jp Not necessarily. Old oil can create more drag on the engine than new oil, and some modern engines call for the thinnest weight of oil available, such as 0W-08 in the Toyota Crown, which was only recently approved for use by the American regulator. Of course, the gain would be negligible, but it could be measured.
@Billybigrigger-ic7jp The layman term for it is in fact a "tune up" , not your definition coming from the videogame "NeedForSpeed:Carbon" or whatever.. lmao

I could never rip off a customer. I think of something like that happening to my mother, wife, daughter, or anyone for that matter. So why does it happen? I could never condone ripping anyone off for any reason. But I will say this, I was in retail auto repair for 26 years. And it isn’t what it used to be. At one time it was a good way to make an honest living. It was undoubtedly hard work with long hours some times. But at the end of the day you felt like you made a good honest living. The overhead was manageable. Uniforms, tools, licenses, repair manuals. Pretty much like any other businesses. Over the last few years taxes and environmental fees slowly chipped away at profits. At one time companies bought used oil and fluids to recycle. Now it is considered hazardous waste and the fees to have it hauled away are astronomical. There are fees and taxes attached to almost every part of the business which must be passed on to customers that drive up the costs of simple repairs. Raising the labor rates to cover those costs now makes the garage appear to be a rip off. In 26 years I watched the shop labor rate go from $19 an hour to $80 an hour. Profits certainly didn’t go up at that rate. If anything, they remained flat. Instead of shorting the customers to make a profit, I got out of the business. As I said, the auto repair business is not what it used to be.
Got a friend who is an ex auto mechanic who left the business. Got tired of being pressured by the boss man to rip off customers, got tired of the immigrants who didn’t know what they were doing messing up his work, got sick of the disgusting behavior between the other mechanics, and had had enough of the owner and the owner’s son fighting each other.
Is two different systems but oil has a lot to do with an engine's performance so sorry to bust your bubble but well lubricated crank and cam ahafts and pistons can be called a tune up but i say a lube up sounds way better lol
Art of the grow That’s a Placebo effect dude, the only way you could ever tell is in very few cases it might run slightly smoother but you’d be pushed to notice. If oil changes anything in your engine, the damage has already been done and needs scrapping!
Darren Rice Righty then...first of all you might wanna learn how to spell before trying to shoot someone down. Second of all you’re talking nonsense, the plain fact is a tune up is not an oil change! A “tune up” is an old term for tuning the fuel/air mixture on a carburettor and resetting the ignition timing nothing to do with fluids. Finally your outdated sexist assumption that I don’t work on cars is further evidence of you talking bullshit, I’ve been restoring classic cars and building engines for almost 20 years bud, I know more than you ever will! So go and make me a sandwich whilst I do some real work! Prick!
Darren Rice Look buddy, its a nonsensical phrase in the context it was used, even you calling plugs fluids & filters a tune up, its not! That’s a “service” initially it wasn’t supposed to be argumentative but it is a bug-bare of mine.
It's not that I don't trust them. But I already pay a premium for changing my own: $50 for 5 qts of full synthetic, $15 for a K&N cloth filter. I'd rather pay $65 and do it myself and know what's in that crankcase than over $100 for an oil jockey at a drive-thru. I pay that much because I plan to keep my cars for a long time.
@@ApartmentKing66 You’re being shafted if you’re paying $50 for five quarts of full synthetic. K&N filters also have a tendency to starve the engine for oil. You’re better off using Mobil 1 oil and filters.

Now I'm worried about all the oil I got at auto zone. That I took to mechanics to change. I got the best oil you could by .did they switch the oil and keep the expensive oil for there own car. Makes me think.
Seriously? $90+ ??? I work at a Toyota dealership and we only use synthetic (unless the customer specifies otherwise or vehicle absolutely requires conventional) for our oil changes and its only $69. That not only includes the oil change but also covers all fluid top-ups and a full front-to-back examination of the vehicle for things like brakes, lights, wipers, and tire condition. It even comes with a free car wash! Takes roughly 30 minutes, but you can be damned sure your vehicle is in good shape when we're done. You even get a signed report from the technician outlining the details of the inspection. We service all makes and models too, not just Toyota. People, seriously, check with your area dealerships before going to these express oil change places. You might be getting ripped off for more than just the type of oil used.
***** ... Haha, not sure which skid plate is worse, the Tundra or the 4-Runner. Tundra with the spacers installed would have to be the absolute worst though. Stupid things always hit the floor and go rolling three bays down.
I recommend everyone to do their own oil changes. You will save at least 50% of what the dealer or service shop would charge and you know exactly what you are putting in your engine.
thats not always tru its people like you that think there a mechanic n dont take time out to find a good mechanic .... mechanics are like family drs for your car so ....... there ya go just like any other job ppl scam on not just cars
This stuff does go on. My brother worked for a place and quit after he talked to the truck driver that brings the oil. The guy said the owner of the shop had him fill all the tanks with the same cheap oil. My brother confronted his boss about this dishonesty and he refused to change. So my brother said he was not working for a dishonest crook and quit. This is precisely why I change my own oil and have for years.
I've changed oil on cars professionally for years. And we will only put the type of oil in that your car calls for as recommended by the manufacture. Lots of these new cars today call for synthetic oil. Where I work cars come in all of the time to get their oil changed. I've had no choice even when the customer comes in and says that they want conventional oil. We'll straight up tell them NO we can't do it, even if it means I have to back the car out. Too much liability on these cars today, to not do it correctly. Especially when a car is still under warranty, and we're not in the business to ruin or to buy engines.
So say a customer brought a classic 1970s Chevrolet K10 in which calls for 10w-30 from the factory. It's over 350k miles and happily runs on 20w-50, no noises or ticks. Would you still use 10w-30 and potentially cause issues from running too thin oil with worn tolerances, use 20w-50, or just flat out refuse the job? I've always wondered how oil changes were handled on the classic cars/trucks that need thicker oil due to worn tolerances. Not trying to attack you or be a dick, I'm just curious how that situation would be handled.
I used Mobil1 synthetic in my `97 RAM 5.9 Magnum, & it ran great... Then, I put plain-`ol Wal-mart conventional oil in my truck the next time, & GUESS WHAT???? It ran great....
Oil is oil but Synthetic is better in the long run. Switching from synthetic to conventional is also moronic unless you don’t know any better. Switching types will cause seals and gaskets to go bad. I can’t tell if you’re being a smart ass but if you actually did use conventional after using Mobil 1 synth for any amount of time then your old 5.9 is gonna pay for it whether it’s sooner or later.

$90 for an oil change 😂😂😂 talk about a finesse
Thats the cost of 2 oil changes including filters if you did it yourself and had to buy tools both times
I do my own oilchanges. Its about 90 dollars for 4 liters of oil and the filter+new crusher washer - and that is if the oil is on sale. I do not live in the US. I use OEM filter (think it is bosch for this car) and Castrol Edge full syntetic 5W-30.
Idk where y’all are or what car you guys drive but I get full synthetic for $40 at the shop I go to

He just said synthetic oil cost 3-4 times as much as normal oil. It's like $3 more for a 5QT bottle.
Its Voodoo he meant the service. Most places charge around $20 for a conventional change and around $90 for full synthetic
People who cheat customers like this should be barred from ever owning a business in any form or fashion in this country.
Forreal , it seems like they all just go under a different name and keep on trucking

“Tune up your vehicle with an oil change” 🤦🏻♂️
Technically it is a tune - up since your car would perform better and overall be happier with better oil

Thank you for letting us know what to watch out for.
“Tune up car with a fresh oil change!?”
Tell me, how does changing the oil tune up the car?
Is two different systems but oil has a lot to do with an engine's performance so sorry to bust your bubble but well lubricated crank and cam ahafts and pistons can be called a tune up but i say a lube up sounds way better lol
Zacarias Blanco
You haven’t “burst my bubble” at all! An engines performance doesn’t fluctuate based on how old its oil is, load of shit.
Art of the grow
That’s a Placebo effect dude, the only way you could ever tell is in very few cases it might run slightly smoother but you’d be pushed to notice.
If oil changes anything in your engine, the damage has already been done and needs scrapping!
Darren Rice
Righty then...first of all you might wanna learn how to spell before trying to shoot someone down.
Prick!
Darren Rice
Look buddy, its a nonsensical phrase in the context it was used, even you calling plugs fluids & filters a tune up, its not! That’s a “service” initially it wasn’t supposed to be argumentative but it is a bug-bare of mine.
I change my own oil.. never trust shops or mechanics
There are times when you need someone to work on your vehicle. It happens. Just do lots of research and check it out thoroughly afterward.
fleiva30 I wouldn’t say never trust them. You just gotta find the honest and good ones
Perfect reason, either do it yourself or buy some beer for your buddy and have them do it for you.

Mike Morea this has literally been disproven left an right.
Seriously?
Yeah it's a ridiculous price of synthetic oil where I work we charge 49.88 for 5 quarts of oil
is this $69 deal valid in Dallas?
Austin Im ... Well, $69 is in Canadian so in theory it should cost less in the US. But who knows.
Gaming With ViperZeroOne 69 dollars isn't even enough to cover the Labour. it's as if oil changes are done at a loss to get service customers.

Usually there a waiver when they sign to get their car worked on so you're not really liable for putting the oil they want into their vehicle
Lol changed oil professionally, that’s like a garbage man saying he’s a sanitation engineer lol.
@@jeffbloomquist7925 Douche. I bet he's forgotten more than you know
Word on the street Jimmy is still pinching a loaf. Lol
😂😂
I used Mobil1 synthetic in my `97 RAM 5.9 Magnum, & it ran great... Then, I put plain-`ol Wal-mart conventional oil in my truck the next time, & GUESS WHAT???? It ran great....
Hahaha
You're a clown 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thats because older vehicles are designed to run on semi synthetic, so putting fully in is throwing money down the toilet
@@williamballou4114 That was back around 50,000Miles, & 15+ YEARS ago. Since then, I've racked up WELL over 190K, & over the years, added Tri-Y headers, a HUGHS BRO's Victor Jr' style intake, cold-air filter, Mopar perf. computer, MSD ignition, a spring-loaded timing chain tensioner, & a few more goodies that make it PURR along the interstate doing 100+...ALL DAY LONG. (& the TRANNY is OE too) So the MOST "Moronic" thing that I SEE here..... is YOUR unfounded poorly thought out, Unsolicited opinion...
I always ask for regular conventional oil has been used for many years to avoid rip offs
remind me again why i wont let dealers and shops near my car..
LOL this doesn't happen at my shop and I'd get a different job if they tried to make me do this
This is why I've always changed my own oil for the past 56 years and counting.
correct me if i’m wrong but isn’t the simple steps to changing your oil goes like:
1) jack car up
2) find plug and drain oil
3) remove old oil filter
4) install new oil filter
5) insert oil plug
6) lower vehicle
7) refill new oil until full
8) done ✅
Legends says that after you change your oil, if you look at your reflection on the dirty oil pan and say Jimmy 3 times, he will appear crying " it was just a leak" 😥🤑
Did Jimmy's ever come out of the bathroom lol
shovel268 , not til after he killed the frog.
shovel268 sources say til this day he is in the bathroom still hidding...
(1-MAN - ARMY) , hiding, Einstein.
Mechanics never remove all the oil. There is always 1/2 quart left in the drain pan. In and out no time to let all the oil drain. Takes about 45 minutes.
riccardo estavans all the oil in my car only takes about a min to drop. 45 minutes? Are you changing the oil in a damn space shuttle or something?
Pretty sure it doesn’t take that long
This is a perfect example of why I do as much of my own vehicle maintenance as I can!
I work as an express tech at a Honda dealer, and this makes me disgusted, ruins the whole car repair business for people that do it right like me... I’m an express tech but I do a lot more than oil changes and I’m moving up...
Hell yeah buddy. I bet nobody changes wiper blades like you.
@@user-pq6mr6op3p you sound like you have something to prove so let’s hear it 😁
Changing wipers is childsplay
