It's more about convenience than price. Most people don't think to have their cars oil changed until the reminder light comes on then they freak out and pull into the closet shop just to make it go away. Yes I said most since there are people out there who do the correct thing and watch their miles and schedule service when they are due.

As a Retired Mechanic of 48 years I’ll tell you that the best place to get your car serviced is a reputable 1 or 2 man shop. They have skin in the game and will provide better service than a large shop with a Manager and mechanics. Having an actual mechanic service your vehicle they will usually inspect it for problems that these oil change kids and/or flunkies would never see.

If it's THAT squeezed, you can't even get a good hand grip, often, though. You'd think on something as big as a MGM, they could do better. I actually did apply to take 5 and the manager actually told me she thought I was over qualified to work there and I didn’t get hired. These companies pay so little that no one with automotive experience wants to work there. At the company I worked for we all got paid 8 bucks an hour that’s 75 cents more than minimum wage to be working on peoples cars that are what gets them back and worth from work. To be fair as someone who worked at a store that did tires and oil changes, during and after I left high school. You don't need to know ANYTHING about cars.
What you do need to do, is have simple procedures that spend a few extra minutes at most running the engine. Then checking the dip stick, and looking under the car for leaks.
These places are so worried about doing the change so quick, corners get cut and people frankly just get lazy. Also if you hear an air tool, during your oil change they just stripped your drain plug.

My 2024 Toyota Corolla comes with "free" maintenance, but I chose (as I do with all of my cars) to do it myself. I know it was done not in a rush, with the right oil filter and the right oil. I did the first oil and filter change at 2937 miles, well under the recommended 10k that Toyota states (supposedly 5k for severe service). The week after I did, the dealership where I purchased the car called me and wanted me to bring it in for the "free 5k mile inspection".
When I told the woman that I already changed the oil and filter, she said, "Oh no, it's just for tire rotation and fluid top off". That's when I told them, "You delivered the vehicle to me without any washer fluid (which I made them reimburse me for), and you want to touch it again? Go pound sand. If and when it needs warranty work, it's going somewhere else". That ended that chat.

Why would you take your fancy German car to a quick service oil change place? These type of places don’t even carry the oil for German cars. They don’t carry any filters or anything. At the place I worked at every time a Mercedes or bmw came in we would always have to run to an auto parts store just to get the filter and oil to even be able to do it. Also German cars are very notorious for being difficult to work on. They have skid plates with 20 screws on them that you have to take off just to get to the filter. A lot of places will see all that work and not even do it and still charge you. Don’t ever take a foreign car to a place like this.

Think of it this way, whenever you fill up check your oil every now and then. You'd be surprised how often turbochargers and rear main seals leak.

See the people working at Burger King, those are the same people oil change places hire. That's why there are mistakes.

If the seal was defective on that guy's oil filter they'd be old gushing everywhere it would have been all down the street a huge mess. And he would have smelled it big time. I think a lot of these cars they take the oil out but they don't put it back in they drain it changed the filter get to talking especially if you hear a bunch of Spanish being spoken underneath your vehicle beware. They didn't have a lot of high-end Vehicles down in South of the Border, so why the hell would they know how to work on them when they get over the Border. On the job training? Bang cuz your engine oh Pedro forgot to put the oil back in.

I used to work in this industry and I heard take 5 drains your oil pan before even knowing you want an oil change. Like you could go in for an inspection and pull up they will drop your pan and when they find out you don’t want a oil change they won’t fill it back up and just let you drive off. I was told this by actual employees that worked for them.

I've used to go to these places when I could not afford to take it to the dealership. Fortunately, I didn't experience this problem. However, a coworker did have a situation like this happen to them from a place like this and all the company did was refund them the price of the oil change. Nothing else was covered😒

The other day I went for a top off, they told me my oil was actually over filled. I guess that oil pan gasket wasn’t leaking like they stated months prior, that’s why I went in for a top off

I worked at an oil change shop about 15 years ago. The things I saw there were enough to convince me it's probably the worst idea to let the small shops take a shot at changing your oil.

A lot of new cars today have a plastic unit where the oil filter goes over tightening the oil filter can cause it to crack and you lose oil

The ones I go to here in Florida always show you the dip stick after they changed the oil and I always supply my own oil and filter

My only issue with them is that I get oil spots in my garage after they service my truck. Happened twice and never went back.

Top mounted (cartridge style) filter housings can be unscrewed with a standard, appropriately sized socket. Bottom (standard) filters can be undone with filter pliers, or a universal filter adapter. Worse case scenario, hammer a screwdriver through it, and take it off that way.

I go to this company in lake Havasu and they always give me professional service. They give cold water, check my tires, and show me the dipstick before I leave to ensure there's actually oil. They also check the filters.

It depends on who they hire. I used to go to Take 5 all the time before I moved somewhere else. The one I went to clearly had an experienced guy in charge of the change. One time he even pointed out a mechanical issue that needed to be fixed.
