    Beautiful motor! I own a 1957 (I think) 18 Evinrude. It's a bit too big for my 14 ft aluminum boat. I have 1949, 1955, and 1958 10 HP Johnson's. All three were known for doing a fine job at top speed, but more importantly would idle down to where you could count the number of turns on the prop. Best trolling motors ever.
    Thanks for the video.

      Thank you! The 1957 Evinrude 18 would have the Script logo on the side of the hood. It is the first year of the 18hp as the '56 was a 15hp and the 1958 was two-tone blue and white. The 10s are excellent motors and definitely will troll with the best of them. The 18s will hold their own but do shake a bit more at low idle than the 10s. The 15s were pretty much on par with the 10s for idle quality and amaze me every time I run them. They will usually better a 10 on top end by 1-2 mph and have a bit more grunt for hauling gear, but are a bit heavier. All of them are wonderful motors. Thanks for watching!

    That sound brings back childhood memories of me running dad's boat when we would go fishing. I loved that engine so much. Now that dad is gone I'd love to have another engine like that again.

      @@joerubenzer6085 Glad I could bring back those memories. Lots of these engines around that are still mechanically in great shape and just need a bit of TLC to get back into regular service. If you decide to get one, consider joining AOMCI.ORG. lots of great people there with tons of knowledge and resources. Normal service parts are still pretty available for these. Thanks for watching!

      Yepper! This one is definitely a runner. I cracked 25mph with it on this boat running a Michigan AJC417 prop. It may not be the best looking one in the stable, but it's one of the most fun. Thanks for watching!

    Strong running 18. I love days like this on the water. I love hearing the gear whine on these.

      This one is a strong one. One of the strongest '50s OMC 18s in my collection. Thanks for watching, Greg!

      It's a really great runner. It deserves a cosmetic restoration to be honest. The patina kind of tells a story, but it also deserves to have the cosmetics match the mechanicals, which are very good on this one. Thanks for watching!

      Thank you. This one is a wonderful example of an OMC 18hp. Even if it doesn't look the best, it definitely runs as near to perfect as one could ask for. Thanks for watching!

      This is an excellent runner and very strong. The 18s are my favorite. They idle great and have plenty of power for a fishing skiff. Still light enough to be portable and easily removed from.the boat for storage. Thanks for watching!

    I just started to use that ratio and my motor run just fine on it but i did read it some where and 50:1 only started in 1968 I forget where i got the info from but i had found a chart online somewhere. Sorry i can't remember where though. My 58 does about 23 Mph on the 9 1/4 X 11 Propeller.

      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Рік тому

      The OMC motors (generally speaking with few exceptions) began using 50:1 oil mix in 1964. Your 58 is running well. That's a decent speed with that motor/prop combination. Thanks for watching!

      @@oldjohnnyrude8404 i have a 14' Springbok Boat and when I did my speed test it was with my Dad's 14' Lund deep and wide much heaver as my boat was down for transom repairs. That Motor is one that i took apart and had to change a crank gearing with another bearing from another Motor and same with the piston rings i changed a few and it had after repairs and before 115 PSI per cylinder if i remember correctly . can't wait to get the near mint Motor I got this past summer running just need new water pump and minor going over to make it is all okay.

    i have the same motor how can you tell when the lower is going bad

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Рік тому +2

      It usually shows up when you tear the gearcase down for a reseal due to a leak. This one was very obvious. The prop shaft was loose in the bearing head and rust would puff out of it when you grabbed it and wiggled it around. Most of them aren't THAT bad. Thanks for watching!

    Ben have you ever compared the weedless prop with a wide paddle prop? I have a couple 11" pitch wheels for the OMC outboards and I wonder which one preforms better.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Рік тому +1

      On the 10s and 15s, the semi weedless prop design performs very similarly to the OMC conventional prop design. I usually get slightly better performance out of the conventional prop by 0.5mph or so. Well worth the loss in top speed if you are running in a weedy area since the semi weedless design is much better at avoiding fouling. Still, my favorite all around prop for these motors is the Michigan PJ-18 9.25×11. It consistently outperforms the OMC prop of the same dimensions. I may run this one in another video with the AJC417. This is the first 18hp I have cracked 25mph with on a 14 foot boat using that prop. Thanks for watching, Dale!

    Ben what is the pitch on a Michigan Wheel PJ 18?

    • @gregoffenback6910
      @gregoffenback6910 Рік тому

      I think I answered my question 9¼x11.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Рік тому

      Yep, 9.25x11P is correct. I do find the Michigan PJ18 consistently outperforms the OMC 9.25x11P prop too.

    Just so you know 58 Lower end is one of a kind as far as parts go . and you should be running 20:1 fuel mixture not 24:1

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Рік тому +2

      Yes, the '58 does have a different gear set than the others for reasons I cannot explain. The housing is common though. This 57 now has 58 gears in it, but if the while gearset were replaced it wouldn't matter. I'd like to know where you got the 20:1 mix ratio information. To my knowledge OMC never used a 20:1 mix ratio recommendation on any 2-stroke engine they ever produced. 8:1, 16:1, 24:1 and 48/50:1 are the only factory specified ratios I have ever seen. Thanks for watching.
