1965 Ted Williams (McCulloch) Low Profile 7.5hp Outboard Motor Lake Test
Переглядів 1,5 тис.16 годин тому
This is is basically as-purchased condition with only a fee carburetor adjustments. It still needs the carburetor cleaned and the fuel pump is a little flaky. Still, it's a very nice example of a Fishing Scott variant with a nice cover that is still pretty well intact save for a couple cracks on the back. It may improve once it has had a tune up. We'll hope to see next season.

I saved this motor from the junk pile at the 2024 Tomahawk AOMCI meet for a nominal donation to the Northwoods Chapter. It had a broken recoil spring and the fuel system was full of corrosion. After some TLC, it's a great running little motor. Glad I saved it.

A bit of a Frankenstein, but most of it seems original other than the transom clamp, steering handle, and the cowl. It's a very strong runner and will certainly be I regular rotation next boating season. Just a few things to finish up on this one. Also purchased from Scott P at Constantine 2024

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404

      My recommendation is to buy your new fuel line with primer bulb from an Evinrude dealer. The OEM line is much better quality than the aftermarket ones. IF you decide to buy aftermarket, I would recommend buying two OMC style single line fuel fittings and a primer bulb separately. Then buy the length of rubber 5/16" fuel hose from an auto parts store that you want and assemble it yourself. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404 3 дні тому

      Often this happens when the engine no longer has sufficient compression to run with the backpressure of the water filling the bottom half of the exhaust housing. This is especially common with smaller HP motors that often get run at full throttle for extended periods or even nearly 100% of their run time. This may be able to.be corrected wit a new set of piston rings and honing the cylinders to restore the cross hatch in the bores. If the bores are too worn, then the cylinders would need to be bored and honed for oversized pistons and rings. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    YIKES!!! One transom clamp??? I'd be afraid of it jumping off the transom! It almost did when you reversed it without the reverse lock engaged. Reverse lock or no... I'd be really concerned about a significant tendency for it NOT to be safely stable! Even with those skimpy length "side wings" on the single clamp bracket! I bet there's a few of them in Davey Jones locker. Anybody running one of those single clamps had better make sure they're using it with a safety chain attached! I'm surprised McCullough was that idiotic to think that was an acceptable design! They were pretty well engineered & advanced featured engines, for the most part. Except... for their bail-o-matic idea! 😢

      Yeah, I was never wild about the single clamp idea, especially on a motor with more hp than about 2. Even on the 60s OMC 3hps, I'm not crazy about the single clamp. They did put some pretty aggressive spikes on the pad side of the clamp to.give it some grip. The motor only flopped on the steering swivel when it tried to join me in the boat. I was waiting for it to twist off though. This isn't a motor I would run a lot, but it is a neat curiosity for the collection. Yes, I do agree this kind of goes against what McCulloch did, but like the Bail A Matic, I think this may have been a Scott design first. Thanks for watching!

    How do you get even your small moters to plane out

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404 7 днів тому

      Getting the boat to plane with smaller motors depends very much on weight distribution, hull length, and trim angle. For the small motors, keeping some ballast in the bow to help hold it down against the operator's weight in the stern and keeping the trim fully tucked to help push the stern up and bow down is usually the best bet. I had an extra fuel tank and a small backup motor in the bow as ballast. If I leaned forward, I gained another 9.5 mph and got closer to planing. This motor never completely planes the hull off, but it was pretty close. Thanks for watching!

    Gee Whiz! That thing runs great, Ben. Or, as my great uncle used to say, "That thing runs like a striped-a-- ape!" (But, my great uncle was not a refined gentleman such as I.) Let me ask you this, Ben: If this 1965 motor is okay to run on 50:1, and if my 1958 18 also has needle bearing rods at both ends and full needle bearings on the mains - just as this motor has, then why not run 50:1 in my 1958 18? Now, I know a 1958 10hp does not have a full set of needles, and it should be 24:1 because of that - at least until the 1961 10hp. Also, I have read an article about a 1953-4-5 15hp Evinrude being "updated" with the rods, needle bearings and pistons out of a 1961 Gale 15 to make it long-lasting. What is your theory about 24:1 and needle bearings throughout? Thank you for the video.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404 7 днів тому

      It really is a great runner. The 71 Electric Start 20 I ran along with this one last week is really a screamer. My grandpa said the same thing about the "striped a-- ape" LOL. He is largely responsible for my refinement. 😜 On the subject of whether or not a pre-1964 18hp OMC is capable of regular operation using 50:1 fuel mix... I will never recommend anyone stray from the original factory recomended mix ratio for these motors. On a personal level, though, I have thoroughly researched the construction of the 22c.i OMCs. The rod bearings did change design slightly in the early years of them, however all of them were fully jeweled engines. I still running my pre-1964 18s on 24:1 as a rule, but have run them on 50:1 in a pinch. I also built a '62 Fastwin out of the parts pile that I have run on nothing but 50:1 since I built it and it has shown no signs of trouble. I really think any of the 18s are OK on 50:1, BUT they were not factory recomended for it until 1964. Internals are essentially identical from 1957, but I did read or hear something about coated pistons beginning in 1964 with the switch to 50:1. I don't know if there is any validity to that or not. So, I don't habitually run my pre-1964 22c.i OMCs on 50:1, but I probably could. I still figure that the earlier ones have carburetor adjustments to dial them in with any mixture you run, so 24:1 will run perfectly and oil.is cheap compared to rebuilding powerheads. I am still running the '62 on nothing but 50:1 as an experiment and I'll continue to do that. I'm thinking I may take that motor to the cabin and run the crap out of it up there too. I'd never run the 10hps on 50:1, and will not recommend 50:1 in a pre-64 18hp, but I do believe they'll survive. 24:1 will make any of them last longer though. I even think there is plenty of "wiggle room" with a '64-up fixed jet 18hp to run 24:1 without causing a lean condition from the extra oil displacing fuel in the mix. That's my 0.02. Thanks for watching!
