Kategna Restaurant - Ethiopian food you shouldn't miss in Addis Ababa

- Kategna restaurant was one of the best restaurants I ate at while I was in Addis Ababa. The menu is extremely extensive, and the food is amazing! More info: migrationology....
One of the highlights of visiting Ethiopia, is eating Ethiopian food, and when you're in Addis Ababa there are many amazing restaurants to choose from. Kategna Restaurant is a well known favorite for locals that live in Addis Ababa, straight up because it's a nice environment, and most importantly, the food is outstanding. During the course of my stay in Addis Ababa, I went to Kategna restaurant a number of times, unable to resist the delicious flavors and nice atmosphere of the restaurant.
I began with a giant platter of Yetsom Beyaynetu, a mix of vegetarianan fasting dishes. The mix came out, beautifully arranged on a giant platter, filled with the wonderful assortment of different curries and stews. There was misir wat, a red lentil stew, some different kinds of salads, and gomen, which is collard greens. Though it might not be a traditional method of ordering, I decided to go for another dish known as doro wat, a famous Ethiopian food that's a chicken stew made from onions, berbere spices, and lots of butter. Also, the egg in the doro wat is one of the highlights. The doro wat was scooped directly onto the pile of injera, mingling with the other wonderful ingredients.
As you can already imagine, I was so incredibly excited to begin my feast at Kategna restaurant, my mouth juices were flowing. There were two different colors of injera that I got served, something I didn't really notice from other restaurants I ate at while I was in Addis Ababa. But after tasting both, they really almost tasted identical. I quickly grabbed pieces of injera, ripping it off the roll and digging it into the juicy curries. The flavor combination were out of control delicious. The vegetarian mix of yetsom beaynetu was excellent. Then it was time to devour the doro wat. The piece of chicken was oddly small, just a time bone with a little bit of meat, but the sauce and egg together were so delicious, that I honestly almost forgot about the chicken itself. The sauce was dripping with flavor!
Despite Kategna restaurant being on the nicer side of the restaurant spectrum, the prices are incredibly reasonable. For me entire feast in the video, including the coffee at the end, our total bill came to 230 ETB ($11.85), and believe it or not, I was actually stuffed full for almost the entire day afterwards, I hardly have to eat any dinner! There are two main locations of the restaurant in Addis Ababa, one just off Gabon street (the one featured in this video) and the other is just off Bole road very near to the airport. I went to both locations during my time in Addis, and they were both of equal greatness, and even the atmosphere was just about the same.
When you visit Addis Ababa, one of the best restaurants is Kategna restaurant, and you should not miss out on the opportunity to eat there!

I love spicy food(i'm Indian) and the whole plate looks so appetizing... we even eat with our right hand... i haven't ever tried Ethiopian food but i can tell just from watching that I would love Ethiopian food!
wow
same here.
Ethiopian food or for that matter food from the Horn of Africa or Sudan is not spicy for an Indian. But there is more freshness, the meats are more rare, pepper is not much seen. They worship coffee, injera is like a think appam in consistency but thrice or more bigger than a ghee roast, Coffee + popcorn might be weird but is very enjoyable. I love their tibs (beef). I visit Ethiopian restaurants and love their communal form of eating from the large plates and the smell of frankincense - < Habesha girls are beautiful too :) > btw my wife also likes Ethiopian food and their cultural dress ( the ones in white color)
God bless you all - A beef lover from Kerala, India residing in the Sharjah, UAE ( yes, I can guess the commonality between us)
yayy hello fellow malayali beef lover!
it's a shame i have to travel Kerala to eat beef now. haha
I'm addicted to Injera no lie! When I moved to America I was literally going through withdrawals like a drug addict! Fortunately I moved to DC which means there are a lot of Ethiopian restaurants and a lot of stores that sell Injera so I can now have it every weekend when my mom makes the 'Wot"!! I'm craving it even now even though I just had it for dinner! But there is no harm because its healthier than most American foods so it's a win win for me!
It makes me really happy how much he is appreciating each bite.
Brittany Purdy don’t talk to much go to Ethiopia just eat that way u know how he was described

Noticed Ethiopians go for varying tests first rather than mass at dinning. So the food swings widely in the human test bud spectrum. hot and cold, (in temperature), hot and mild (in spiciness), bitter, nutty, sour, sweet, earthly, raw, cooked lightly, simmered for hours, smooth or textured etc...
e.g. Raw Meat and fish. Tre-siga, Kitfo, Tre-Asa, gored gored,
cooked mildly- Leb Leb,
sour - Injera, timatim fitfit,
bitter/spicy - Awaze be Hamot (dish made from bile)
spicy - Doro Wot, Siga-wot, Shiro-Wot, Misir-Wot, Tibs with Sauce
none-spicy - Alicha, abeba gomen, Alich Misr, Alich Shiro
Textured, Banatu, Quanta firfir, CheChebsa, Quategna
smooth, Genfo, shiro
Sweet - Bombolino, Imbotito, Anjero (swett Injera eaten in the Somali Region)
I love Ethiopian food ❤️❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯
I ll soon travel to Ethiopia and i am gonna dig in that. Yam yam

Hey Mark, great video! I love Ethiopia food too. Where I live, in Munich, Germany, there's this awesome restaurant called the Blue Nile and it's just amazing. Real spicy delicious food and good prices too. The bread is great but it's very, very filing! Take care.
Hey, great that you have an Ethiopian restaurant near where you are, yes very filling!
Not bread .... its injera
teff-injera*
Firstly, the food looks like a work of art. I've never had Ethiopian food before but I would definitely give it a try if I could.

I cook this at home everyday and all my friends love it! Just so you know the brown injera is made with 100% brown Teff flour which is healthier and loaded with Iron and gluten free.
Seeing it all mixed together was awesome. That's probably how I'd go for it! And ending it all with the best coffee in the world...righteous!

Hi Mark :) I've only discovered your channel today but I must say that being a passionate foodie myself, I share your enthusiasm for discovering various cuisines of the world and can only hope that I will muster enough courage to start my own YT channel soon. Keep up the fantastic work. Your facial expressions are absolutely priceless but most of all you share what you love the most and THAT, I believe, is the very essence of enjoying and embracing life. Thank you :)
you had make me hungry I am ethiopian and now am gono cook and eat these things you have show us
Maybe some ppl are getting Ethiopia mixed up with Somalia. There is a lot of hunger in Somalia and a lot of corruption from what I can gather from the limited news we get. I wonder if the food is similar. Supporting a small business is important, like eating at this restaurant. I think you're doing a good job Mark!
Let me tell you that! First u have to go and see then you will talk about it. We will feed u. If you want to
I love Ethiopia ❤❤❤❤❤
Why do I love watching this man eat
I swear I will never ever be bored with your face expression that you could do right after tasting. You can do it a million times!!!!
S grade expression
Thank you very much!
Dude your first taste takes all of us into there... some may book flight ethiopian airlines lol

I have to agree with so many others Mark, this looks just plain TASTY!!! I don't know if you've ever reacted so much to any meal as this one, must have been a real cool place!
Yes, this was an amazing meal, and it was, I think my second meal in Ethiopia so I was still extremely excited to be eating!

i wish i know when you are here we have so much food more than that i know u will enjoy it i hope you come again
Mark: different colours of the injera are due to different colours of the teff grains used to make injera. Broadly, there are three types of teff grains: brown/red [qey-teff], mixed [sergenya-teff] & white [netch-teff]. However, some nutritionists claim that darker teff grans have a bit more iron content than the white variety but that is yet to be fully proven. Injera can be made from the flour of other grains such as sorghum/millet, rice, barley, corn/maize, etc. But, teff grain seems to be the best in making a very good injera. Poorer Ethiopians eat injera made by mixing teff & other grains such as sorghum/millet, wheat or corn for economic reasons. Teff flour is far more expensive than a flour made from other grains. Thanks for a great clip.
Your Expression is very likable. It gives us the impression of how a delicious this food can be lol I honest heartedly swallowing my saliva 😂😂😂😂
Your delayed reaction after eating that popcorn kernel was priceless.....it took him several seconds to realize the popcorn also tasted good
Haha, yes it did, I was sooo full, but the popcorn was good, and I wasn't expecting it to be that good!
Great video as always! I like how genuine and enthusiastic Mark is, immediately puts me in a good mood haha
Wowww Amazing
@MarkWiens...I commend you for your sincerity my friend. It truly is some of the most deliciously prepared cuisine on the planet...period.
biri god ethiopiaye 💚❤💛🌷🌷🌷
And I usually like my jalepenos with some shuro
Ethiopian food is the best on Earth! I am fortunate to be able to buy injera in Toronto, because my sourdough fell flat. One day I will try again.
Wow!! That looks amazingly delicious! Yummm... I'm already hungry XD
Iam from Ethiopia💚💛❤
Mark you are great presenter .the food itself looks delicious if you don't mind let me give you this 🤗💟🏅because you deserve it.
I want some! That looks so good.
I have never been in Ethiopia. Of course, I have never tried Ethiopian foods. So your videos are really helpful for me. It is because it is possible to experience the culture and food by watching your videos. Of course, it is not a direct experience HAHA. I want to try some foods which i can eat by using my hands.
That looks so spicey and delicious Mark. Ty for sharing.
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Mark, you've definitely grown man💕Respect
I really like his expression when he eats the different fòods.I t makes you want to be there
Hi Mark,im Oana your fan,i love your videos, you are the best.Injera is my favourite food. The reason why injera is dark is because the flour is dark, now you know.the gray one is made of light colour flour.I ate it at my friend who comes from Addis Ababa,Eskedar is my friend. We live in Sweden and i was at her and ate injera
My favorite place in Addis. Thanks Mark.
Wow ~ what a great mix of items! That looks really delicious.
Fantastic video, Mark.
Thanks Mike!
From your description and what I can see "Injera" might be similar to south Indian ( malayalee) dish "appam". I can tell you that the later tastes divine. I so drooling over that chili stuffed with onions. I love chilies.
Thanks for sharing, yah I think you're right, a bit like that. It's kind of spongy, a little sour.
Great video Mark! I can't wait to eat Ethiopian food. You should have your own Food travel show on Fox traveler or something.
