  • The motivations that drive us are often a mystery - even to ourselves. But if we draw back the shroud of emotions that obscure our view of these motivations, we take the first step toward true self-mastery and understanding what makes us - and others - tick.
On this episode, The Laws of Human Nature author Robert Greene shares his deep insight into our own nature as humans, delves into what makes us so easy to manipulate, and observes how our dark side, built as the result of our upbringing, creeps into everything we do as adults. Robert will then help us make better decisions based on these revelations.

What We Discuss with Robert Greene:
💡 Why you can't monumentally improve your life by modifying your behavior if you don't understand what causes such behavior.
💡 Why it's liberating to understand that the reason other people react to you in whatever way they do has more to do with them and their own baggage than you and yours.
💡 How oversimplifying the impression you have of someone robs you of the ability to relate to them beyond a surface level -- and what you can do to change the game.
💡 Why your lower nature seems to be the default you'll fall into without effort and what it takes to tap into the potential of your higher nature.
💡 The difference between active and passive envy, where envy comes from, why it's so often destructive, and how you can flip envy to your benefit.
    💡 And much more...

I have a friend who uses "dark humour" to make fun of me and is always indecent. I thought I was the sensitive one with the problem, but clearly, it wasn't about me. It is so hard not to take things personally sometimes. It's always important to trust your gut and surround yourself with people accordingly. Very eye-opening. I love Greene's interviews. Thank you.

Never tolerate someone that puts you down and disguises it as a joke or sarcasm. Your body and subconscious are injured by it even if you say it.

    • @austinf9239
      @austinf9239 Рік тому

@@ChooseLoveToday316 Would you say that to an Italian group of friends? I ask that because their culture, and many others, are always putting each other down and making it a joke, "breaking balls", and they love it. I have a similar relationship with my group of friends, using every chance to insult each other, and I believed this has caused bonding between our group. If my friend makes fun of me, I can either be sad and offended or I can use this moment to stand up for myself. We are lifelong friends so it is all with love. We both laugh hysterically after this. And with this, I would be practicing my skills of charisma and wit. It could be great practice for when you get into real argumentative situations, say in the work place or in front of a love interest. No, you will not have something clever to say every time, but you get better at it. I did not understand the part where you said your body and subconscious are injured by it even if you say it.

I have watched almost all of the recent interviews of Robert Greene on his new book The Laws of Human Nature, and i have to say your interview is the best one (even better than the Ryan Holiday one). It is the first time i ended the video and leaved a comment. I really liked your pace, and the fact that you actually let the interviewer talk (it sounds obvious, but not everyone do those important things that makes all the difference). Also, you had the courage to bring relevant and sensitive topics, and dealt well with them. As a listener, I was able to get something usefull out of it.

I had 2 huge insights from this interview.
    - Ray Dalio taught me to be radically honest and transparent (and I'm also blunt by nature). So for a long time, I've always been (too) brutally honest with everyone and assumed it was the optimal strategy.
I've hurt some people but believed it was an all or nothing choice (either be brutally honest or a lying SOB with nothing in between).
From now on, I'll systematically add a layer of empathizing/acknowledging before delivering my usual brutal honesty regimen.
    - Deeply observe people's patterns of behavior/past actions to really judge them objectively and escape dangerous people preemptively! Stop being naive and assuming that a person won't hurt you just because this person hasn't hurt you YET.

“[M]any believe that by being honest and open they are winning people’s hearts and showing their good nature. They are greatly deluded. Honesty is actually a blunt instrument, which bloodies more than it cuts. Your honesty is likely to offend people; it is much more prudent to tailor your words, telling people what they want to hear rather than the coarse and ugly truth of what you feel or think. More important, by being unabashedly open you make yourself so predictable and familiar that it is almost impossible to respect or fear you, and power will not accrue to a person who cannot inspire such emotions.”

You as an interviewer know that the author is supposed to be talking the most! Incredible way alluding the conversation in various topics, you admit your biases and imperfections. That is dangerously difficult to do, and I hope you do more interviewers. Would love to maybe have a conversation with you one day hahahha. Once again, amazing line of questions you raised. And you connected the dots almost perfectly!

I have to say that as a chosen one..he is correct in addressing our dark side..we are dual beings..the Alpha omega the light and the dark..we have acknowledged the light side and hopefully have fed this side. But we also have a dark side..as is with all of nature..and we must acknowledge that side of our selves as well. Without judgment..Without guilt..

Not everyone feels envy. I didn't even know what that emotion was until my late 20's... and even now 10 years later I'm not entirely sure if that feeling was envy. However I am on the spectrum so emotions can be a little weird with me anyway.

I experience envy for the first time when I was 26, I could just not believe how horrible that emotion feels, it was consuming my existence, it was painful therefore exhausting. That is how I understood enviers seems to be so bitter. Its a heavy emotion. Im 50yo now and I have felt envy 4 times in my life. Usually I have the certainty that there is plenty of everything for everyone. But when I feel stuck an deeply desperate is when envy appears. That is neurodiversity, indeed, not all people experiency envy so often.
