I’ve read all your books Robert, multiple times along with many other philosophers. Not only do you illustrate the flaws and nature of humanity but you offer your own flaws as well.
You have solidified your place among Sun tzu, Carl Jung, Socrates, and Machiavelli. I will make sure of that. I’m sure many others are in agreement.

Thank You Robert, this reminded me to post this quote of yours:
“You like to imagine yourself in control of your fate, consciously planning the course of your life as best you can. But you are largely unaware of how deeply your emotions dominate you. They make you veer toward ideas that soothe your ego. They make you look for evidence that confirms what you already want to believe. They make you see what you want to see, depending on your mood, and this disconnect from reality is the source of the bad decisions and negative patterns that haunt your life. Rationality is the ability to counteract these emotional effects, to think instead of react, to open your mind to what is really happening, as opposed to what you are feeling. It does not come naturally; it is a power we must cultivate, but in doing so we realize our greatest potential.”
― Robert Greene, The Laws of Human Nature

It's interesting how much this overlaps with the Eastern concept of "sati" or what we often refer to as "mindfulness". The direct consequence of constantly being bombarded with stimulation is that it pushes us further and further away from our non-reactive (or, as Robert refers to it, rational) mind. We are so so hooked on stimulation from our phones and TV's, we're losing the ability to step outside ourselves and realize that we are are not our emotions, we are just the vessel that perceives them. This quote by Aldous Huxley (Paraphrasing Blaise Pascal) comes to mind "The sum of evil, Pascal remarked, would be much diminished if men could only learn to sit quietly in their rooms." Though I don't think we're necessarily doomed, as Robert says, this is a power that must be cultivated, and I believe anyone can achieve it through mindfulness meditation.

So does he have videos on how to do this? How to see what’s really happening vs what our emotions are? I’m going through a spot in my life where I absolutely need this. I am aware that I am confused by what is going on. Bc my feelings are making me feel one way and believe the reality I want, but I know it’s not the real reality. But I also don’t know what is…….

      @AbbasiOfficial 2 роки тому

@@Noneya342 The key thing to understand for me is that this life is to understand emotions and discipline them to work for yourself. Mindfulness, meditation and so forth help - I also ended up teaching these as find Robert Greenes books very helpful in motivating me to live my life with more purpose. One of the meditations that can help is going into a deep meditative mode and confronting the fears, darkness within. This is called the Dark Meditation - its possible there are some youtubes on this.

Thanks for your books. One chapter of Laws of human nature and a few UA-cam videos of yours changed my life. It has got me out of the mess I lived in from last 29 years (I am 29 year old). Your work has guided me to change my habits as well as choose a good career. I know I am late but I am pretty sure the guidance I needed is in your books.
I have noticed something great in your TED talk. You talk about work. Because of that I could see that the only way to move forward is through work. You don't get to know where you are lacking until you start working on something. When I decided I will develop a skill and get a job in that I got to know that it is my family that is sabotaging my growth from very childhood. Some of that might be conscious some may be unconscious . That doesn't matter. All that matter is I needed to learn a way to get out of the drama that stopped me from living a life. So I figured out may be I am too emotional and my emotions are not in my control. Thus started internet search and one after the other resources came to me. One day your videos appeared and that is what I exactly needed. I have been fortunate to find your incredible knowledge. But that fortune came to me with a decision to work.
Thanks a lot. May Athena bless you with more and more rationality.

Keep 'em coming RG. We'd love to see more content from you! I love the idea of looking at reality from the perspective of concentric circles - with the first circle representing you and your world (conscious/unconscious divide), and the wider circles going outside of you. It's a great way of understanding not only your limits of knowledge, but in which circle you're struggling with any given issue. For example, if you are struggling with your spouse, that would be the second circle. You can then act appropriately (i.e. rationally) according to what limits of knowledge you experience. You can use empathy (Law 2). Great video!

Thank you Robert for dissecting the turmoil of today profoundly through human nature, neurology and with historical in-depth analysis. That historical understanding of ourselves as a society and as humans is so wiped out for most of us, which could keep us better grounded in reality and rationality. It could be part of the antidote for demagogues. Thank you for presenting personal solutions too. I hope your recovery is going forward and that you remember to keep an open mind spirit for it. Remember the Milton Erickson's story.

For anyone looking for a practical action item to implement this all, start a mindfulness meditation practice of 60 min/day. I’ve been doing this for 13 months now, and this develops emotional intelligence like no other. All of these lessons Robert talks about becomes intuitive so instead of just listening to theory, you learn it by just observing your mind from a distance. Once you become ever more aware of your subtle emotions/thoughts, you can understand others now. Ever get blacked out drunk and wake up the next day thinking “why the fuck was I thinking/doing that?!” This starts happening multiple times per day when you become more aware of your internal experience

Robert, in my recent past, when people disliked me I felt miserable, as if something was wrong with me. Especially with people who did not even know me, who’ve never spoke a word to me. They’ve come up with all types of assumptions and projected that onto me. The negative energy is very contagious and if you’re not strong like I once was it can bring you down but through the adversity I’ve learned how to be strong. Only through that can one be strong. Learning to now feed into those false projections and standing firmly in who you are is a great lesson in life. If everything was always easy I don’t think I’d learn much. Anyway, on the subject of hate, When someone hates you, it’s taking a tremendous amount of energy from them to do so, that’s already the first advantage in dealing with your enemies the second advantage is knowing that you’ve caused a state of their ego to go into self preservation and destroy their source of unhappiness which is you. The third advantage is giving them space to destroy themselves by their own hatrid. You don’t even have to react, in doing so you hold all the power. It’s truly freeing, to know that your enemies will destroy themselves. Not in a malicious sense but in a sense of not feeling responsible for others negative emotions towards you. You actually have compassion for their suffering. If you really want to feed into the laws of human nature, you can then apply the quote, “if your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, if your enemy is thirst it give him water to drink.” In doing so you make an enemy a friend, giving you the advantage. Never trust anyone though. Is it manipulative ? or is it being smart in a kind way. When someone hates you, you’ve really triggered their ego, you get to see how fragile they become, does that not truly embody the statement, “you have power over your enemies” they are your biggest fans, your audience, you are running the stage for them. That’s where you need to be smart. This embodies another quote, “You can’t throw me to the wolves, they come when I call” really truly powerful in having haters because then you have POWER over them. You are essentially controlling their emotions. Where if you are emotionally unaware of this you would react with ego as well but once you learn the tremendous power you wield you have to be careful with because with great hate comes great destruction & so not inciting more hate but learning to mold it to your advantage. I think if you’re a good person your first instinct is to become fearful. To retaliate, to figure out why, but all that is unnecessary and harmful. Continue to go about your life, without reacting to anyone or anything and literally just observe others actions/ malicious intent, as they destroy their image with such hate you remain solid, taking care of your image, it will slowly eat away at their ego even more. Truly deep psychology here... like I said, don’t play with fire or you will get burned just be smart.
Another thing I’ve learned in life is that everyone’s got an opinion and if you pay attention to it you’ll go crazy. It’s important to have your own opinion. A moral one.

Such a huge fan of yours, Robert, so I was delighted to just see you've got a channel here on the 'Tubes! I'm so glad you've continued to recover from your stroke. You and your writing are a true gift to humanity.
After listening to Shane Parrish interview you ~2 years ago, I promptly bought 48 Laws of Power, which I feel was as much an astute look at human behavior as it was one of the best studies of history you could ask for. Mastery is one of my favorite books, and one I recommend all the time.
Laws of Human nature is next in my Kindle queue after I finish reading Meditations for the second time. Can't wait!
Best to you, sir, and I hope your recovery continues, and please keep staying safe. Thank you for helping all the rest of us stay SANE during this hugely irrational, ridiculous and tumultuous time. Let us hope November 4, 2020 begins a recovery chapter for America.

I love this! My current job is getting me so miserable since the head chef doesn't know how to take the time and talk to his crew and always blames everyone else for everything 😟 He creates these lavish new menus every couple weeks and then loses his shit at the cooks for not knowing how the plating is the first night a new menu is rolled and he hasn't even shown anybody how it's plated.......... it's frustrating... lol.. I already am looking for another gig to hold me closee until this covid thing blows over and I feel safe opening my own takeout joint .. I thought about calling a meeting and telling the poor chef that his whole crew thinks he sucks at communicating but I think he'll go mad so I'm gonna leave llol.
