Man, these flashback eye-pleasing 90s DOS reviews are my favorite videos you do, and your script, research, and dedication make your videos my favorite way to relive them. Thanks for tapping into that.
I uttered an "oh snap!" when I saw this video in my subscription box, for I had thought I was one of the scant few who knew about and played this game when I was younger. It sure was balls hard and I didn't get as far as I'd like, but Alien Rampage is a pretty quality DOS game and worth the zero dollars I paid to try the first episode. It's good to relive those memories.
So glad you covered this game, I found it on an archive site and been really enjoying it! Having you review it and share it to more people (and also talking about the background behind it, which I had no idea!) is seriously awesome :D
Looks pretty awesome, nice animations, good old platformer gameplay and a good portion of blood and gore. Too bad I missed this back in the days, but it looks something that would be still fun today. Probably gonna get it from ebay some day
Alien Rampage is awesome! I had forgotten the name of this game but now that i found it again i can add it to my list of games to play 😌 Your game reviews are excellent late night viewing btw, the reviews for Thief, Hocus Pocus, and the Harvester are among some of my favs. Thanks so much for making these!
Wow, I'm glad I clicked on this. With such a generic title I was surprised to find this to be the first time In a while that I've seen a dos game that I've never heard of before. On top of that.. like you said, it's... ridiculously triple A for something 'so little people care about'. I think it's more likely they don't know about it, like me, either. Platformers on the PC really weren't all that great. There were exceptions, like Keen, Jazz Jackrabbit, (or ones that are more cinematic like Flashback, Black Thorne, Prince of Persia, Another World/OOTW) but for the most part they tended to be more like engines with a few elements of gameplay.. spread over 100 maps that didn't vary in any mechanics EXCEPT for the design. Literally just a different placement of blocks. THIS actually has gameplay variation like a more modern platformer. On top of that, it has a surprising number of frames in it's animation, at least for the main character, and the sprite work itself is amazing.
HOLY SHIT, and here i thought i was the only one who still remembered this game. And just before i saw this vid i watched your Serious Sam First Ecounter vid, im gonna sub!
Well I'll be damned.. I just checked on eBay for shits 'n giggles, and low and behold, there is a single listing for Alien Rampage from a seller that supposedly has a bunch of new copies of the game (at least ten as of this writing). They are listed as BIN and cost a little under $10 after shipping. Just nabbed one for myself. Just a FYI for anyone out there that wants a physical copy of this game.
another great video is always lgr! I remember my friend having a copy of this at his house and that's how I got introduced to this game specifically. since then I was able to track down a full copy and beat it all the way through. it was a great game for the time and I agree that the Aesthetics were freaking awesome. it's too bad this game didn't get a series of its own but I am glad that we still have games from this arrow that still go on to this day anyway. that's something that I can be thankful for.
I love your channel for things like this. Never heard of this game, never had an interest in it, but this game is awesome! Just another gem you've helped me discover!
More DOS/old-school reviews please! I know you've already done tons of them, but they're what made me subscribe to you years ago! I love tech tales/thrifting/modern reviews too... but more old-school reviews!! Thanks -Long time viewer
These videos on old DOS games are so amazing. I love the channel's newer content too, but it's sad to see this particular niche mostly left in the past. I found so many favorite classic games through these videos, including this one that I play around every Halloween, and I decided to revisit this video for it!
This looks wonderful. Like a mix of Another World, Abuse and a touch of Nebulous (the submarine levels). I have to get this. Thanks for the video Clint!
I remember winning this as a twerp in a first-level demo of sorts. I think ranking was sorted by % of the screen you found, and I got top 10-20 by finding the hidden area in the top right corner. Took a little finangling after they sent In Pursuit of Greed instead, bleck.
Robert Elkins It's not _that_ forgettable. Hexen's system of hub levels was frustrating and confusing, and the only differences between characters was hard they hit and what they did with flechettes.
Pretty hardcore, digging the style. I wonder how hard it would be to get the rights and re-built this in a modern engine. Leave the normal-looking sprites as-is, swap out all the pre-rendered stuff with actual models and get the guy that did the 2016 Doom soundtrack to compose some tunes for this. Awwww yeah. \m/ \m/
At most I must have heard from this game, but this is the first time I see the game. I am not a big platformer fan, but the colourful graphics and smooth animation should have put this game high(er) in the rankings. Respect to the VGA artists who did the graphics. It reminds me also a bit to the graphics used in the game Tyrian. Actually I feel like this was a period in the mid 90's where the (few of the last) more advanced/smooth animated VGA games were released. And then the transition to (Windows) SuperVGA (higher resolution) and accelerated graphics started and leaving behind the VGA DOS-era.
The simple solution to the music problem is make a mix CD (if you're old school like me. We even used tape cassettes back in the day for doing this) or if you're a modern person, make a folder in your music player of choice of awesome heavy, pounding, industrial music, and set that player on endless replay while playing. That's how us old school video gamers used to have to soundtrack our games that had no music. You kids who never grew up with video games in the 70's and early 80's have it easy.
a review of an old school side scroller? my friday is off to a good start. btw did that alien narrator sound like the Hanar from Mass Effect to anyone?
I played this soooo long ago!! It was on one of those shareware CDs! I always remembered the title screen, but couldn't remember the title until a week ago-so amazing to see it again!
tldr: If it was on pc before the year 2000, it was going to be behind. If you go to DOS platformers in 1993, you get stuff like duke nukem 2, which itself might look behind. The thing is that from the 70s to the 90s pc games were always behind consoles, Sometimes up to 10 years, due to a lack of dedicated hardware for games in them. It took iD and apoggee and programming wizardary to close the gap, and even then, it wasn't until the mid-2000s and steam before there was anything representing parity between pcs and consoles, even when pc hardware got better and cheaper, it took the efforts of steam to make it convenient. The only reason PCs are so viable this gen is because consoles messed up thier strengths, and PCs have done everything they can to shore up thier weaknesses. But even today win10 is a nightmare for graphics card drivers. For 1996, a platformer with this much detail on Pc was actually ahead of the curve, 3D was only beginning to come with 3D graphics cards and quake, and both of those were expensive and top of the line for thier time. Meanwhile, super mario 64 was only using some of the power of the 64, but had smoother animations and didn't have the pixelation that software-rendered quake did. Even top of the line of PC still didn't always compare to an average console game at the time.
I loved this game as a kid; never noticed the lack of music since my first speakers came post 00', so I had a habit of playing games with my own soundtrack of choice (on my CD/cassette playing hi-fi) - this one went well with powermetal; W.A.S.P and Helloween... =D
I remember this game., but I didn't play it much, my sister did. We could never get it to work quite right, though, and I'm glad to know that the music thing wasn't an issue!
Given how much your description of the game made me think of the Metroid series, I'm not really surprised that Alien Rampage hasn't gotten a lot of love...
OMG what a trip, this game was one of my firsts. Was so bad at games, didn't speak/read any English, and was forever playing the first level because it was hard. I passed it once lol. Good ol memories
I was genuinly surprised that I've found it on Ebay for 6$ (shipping to Europe costs a bit, but it's still a good offer), even with this Softdisk's sleeve. I'm really charmed with this game, even such details like mimics of those friendly aliens is truelly outstanding. I love PC gaming for plenty of those "hidden gems" (and not only for this!).
Now we need someone to reverse engineer the game to get to the source code, code in an FM / MIDI / module player to the game and add some music. Some metal module trackers like from Amiga would sound great with this. Also this game just screams Predator. It looks like the developers wanted to make a Predator action game but they couldn't get a license.
Holy crap, you reviewed Alien Rampage! I tried to figure the rights for this - I thought they transferred to the Flat Rock software via Softdisk, but the guy said he didn't have the rights to it.
Due to this video, I've been in touch with and know who has the rights now. But the company hasn't announced it yet as they only bought it recently. Stay on the lookout for news :)
Oh wow, cool! :) Hopefully it shows up on GOG as well as Steam. (I just tweeted Night Dive Studios about this, so I guess I'll have to tweet them again that the rights have been claimed.)
I was thinking of this game just the other day, couldn't remember the name though. I was gonna suggest a review when the name returned to me but here we are!
I played a demo of this when i was little. Started looking for it a while ago and could not find it. The reason was that i thought it was a swamp monster. so thank you.
I also thought of Halloween Harry from the title. I thought it was going to be a review of that game before I remembered you (probably) already covered it.
looks pretty awesome..try to find a copy..and by the way nice channel lgr.The problem is,everytime when i see a Gamereview on your Page for a Game back in time i want to have it hahaa
I loved this game. Of course I was never supposed to play it when I was a kid.. but in a way.. that's what made it so good. Hardly looks like I remember, but those exploding guts are at least still as cool as I remember.
Donkey Kong had that screen moving too. Only a lot faster, you didnt have to move towards anything. Seems a bit slow here, but yeah, a must for such a zoomed in sidescroller..
Sounds like the protagonist said he was named "Poo-pah." I'm not sure. Nice review, as-always! Nice to see these cancelled games came out in some form.
2:08 that voiceover really really reminds me of the opening of Charles Barkley: Shut up and Jam: Gaiden: Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. wonder if that was an intentional reference on the part of tale's of games....
I played the hell out of this game back in the days 😅 it's quite a hard game but what I loved about it was the action and fx. It never bothered me as a kid that there was no in-game music at all
shame it doesn't have any music I was expecting a heavy metal soundtrack with screaming guitars.
The box cover definitely looks like a 80's metal album. Something by Venom!
Man, these flashback eye-pleasing 90s DOS reviews are my favorite videos you do, and your script, research, and dedication make your videos my favorite way to relive them. Thanks for tapping into that.
Thanks for watching!
Now this... THIS... is a great vid and why I'm a huge fan of your retro reviews. Well researched, well scripted and entertaining. Cheers!
Thank you!
Aw man, you got to this before I did, I was planning on talking about this one eventually also.
I hope you still do man, there's a lot more to touch on than I did!
You two should bless us with a child together xD
Top 10 anime crossovers of all time
Dat cover art, it's like an Orc and a Predator got freaky and that was the result.
It also reminds me a lot of the Planescape Torment cover.
Woah, it was? That would've been awesome.
Who was making it before Blizzard?
+Emma Anderson cool info, thanks
I think Blizzard North was originally called Condor, before the takeover.
Launches Alien Rampage, loads a Rob Zombie playlist, opens a can of Surge, opens a can of Jolt. 90's gets redeemed.
Freaking amazing script on this one Clint. One of your best reviews, although it's hard to choose.
Thank you!
I couldn't agree more. Clint is the master. Always enjoyable and informative.
That's a suspiciously X-wing-y craft you got there.
Flown by a suspiciously Predator-y character.
That is true. :)
YES!!! Finally other people who know of Alien Rampage! :))
The mere mention of Halloween Harry (I never knew it as Alien Carnage) sent me into a nostalgia fueled rampage.
Halloween Harry vs Duke Nukem when?
Heck, I'll just play my own music with it; preferably something raw and gritty, like some death metal or thrash. Yeah, this needs thrash.
How about some crazy shit like SPASTIC INK
Lesson learned: a kickass game without music is doomed to be forgotten!
So glad you covered this game, I found it on an archive site and been really enjoying it!
Having you review it and share it to more people (and also talking about the background behind it, which I had no idea!) is seriously awesome :D
He's not ugly, he's in great shape. And has a nice smile.
He's nice to his mum too.
Who called him ugly? Lol typical miserable people trying to put others down instead of focusing on improving their own lives...how sad...
LGR. I know which one I'd eagerly sleep with.
Looks pretty awesome, nice animations, good old platformer gameplay and a good portion of blood and gore. Too bad I missed this back in the days, but it looks something that would be still fun today. Probably gonna get it from ebay some day
Great episode! Will have to check this one out :)

@@LGR no problemo 😎

Think im pulling an allnighter to just watch a bunch of your reviews, atm on Quake.

I'm so glad that you made this video with THIS game! Very fond memories from my childhood. Thanks!

Grr, doesn't ship outside US
Gameplay and Talk so was your copy legit?
Siana Gearz Yes.

Awesome! I appreciate that you get to play as a cool alien and not just some boring human shooting aliens.
You are by far my favorite channel. you are the quality of youtube. thank you.
Thanks for covering this, this sort of review is exactly why I sub to this channel!
I love your channel for things like this. Never heard of this game, never had an interest in it, but this game is awesome! Just another gem you've helped me discover!
4:02 I forgot Softdisk was based here in Shreveport until I saw this screenshot. Their office is literally right down the street from me, lol

You bet, glad you enjoyed!
This was my all time favorite did side scroller, while maybe second to Iron Blood. Awesome video, thanks for the memories!
Woooooooooooooooow, it is so sad i never played this game as a kid.!
This looks so awesome and i wanna play it !!

Man I live in Shreveport LA, never knew this damn place hosted some of video game's most famous developers!
I played this 20 years ago. I could never remember the name, I've been hunting for it for literally years. Thanks dude!
That Alien guy sounds Texan as heck!
seeing your avatar makes me sad that LGR hasn't covered Strife yet. It's exactly the kind of game he would cover I don't know why he hasn't ;-;
Robert Elkins It's not _that_ forgettable. Hexen's system of hub levels was frustrating and confusing, and the only differences between characters was hard they hit and what they did with flechettes.

awsome video dude, damn old games are the best!!!! hands down.
Would love to see you review GODS from 91

Looks like a really solid game. It's a shame there's no music though. Strange design choice.
Darn, another review of yours that makes me wish I owned the game that was featured. Great vid, LGR!
I played this soooo long ago!! It was on one of those shareware CDs! I always remembered the title screen, but couldn't remember the title until a week ago-so amazing to see it again!
Very cool review. Thanks for the upload.
That has aged really well! Great content Clint, as always!
This game came out about 2-3 years later than it should have, it looks like a game that belongs in 93.
tldr: If it was on pc before the year 2000, it was going to be behind.
If you go to DOS platformers in 1993, you get stuff like duke nukem 2, which itself might look behind.

Ahhhhh yes, excellent... a good old fashioned semi-obscure DOS game review from LGR. It feels like it's been so long.
I remember this game., but I didn't play it much, my sister did. We could never get it to work quite right, though, and I'm glad to know that the music thing wasn't an issue!
there is something 90's games have that nothing today has.
alien rampage has a lot of it.
I still play this game. One of my favorite platforms on MS-DOS.
Game looks awesome, may have to hit that archive up, great vid as usual!
Given how much your description of the game made me think of the Metroid series, I'm not really surprised that Alien Rampage hasn't gotten a lot of love...
I remember playing a demo of this game back in 1997... nostalgic feelings!
This game looks like loads of fun...Can't believe I didn't notice it back in the day! I'm tracking this one down to play for sure!
This game looks bad ass! How is this not on Steam??
Screw that, why this game isn't on GOG?!
Hello. I'm from the future. It's on both Steam and GOG now.
OMG, NOSTALGIA. And i don't even knew what game it was until the demo gameplay started!
That pre-rendered Duke game reminded me of Hunter Hunted; I spent hours and days on the demo when I was 13.
Wow I had no idea this existed, but I would've definitely have been playing the crap out of this back in the day!
Thanks so much for sharing.
Wow that looks bad ass. I have never heard of this game before :P
the sprite animation in this game is actually pretty good, i kinda wanna play this now
Love that game! Played the demo version back in my teenage years. And that graphical style screams heavy metal!
I love PC gaming for plenty of those "hidden gems" (and not only for this!).
how is it not better known b/c it is a late comer in 1996 for sidescrolling platformers that's the post doom era or whatever
Clint, thanks for this gem mate. gonna check this one out
Now we need someone to reverse engineer the game to get to the source code, code in an FM / MIDI / module player to the game and add some music. Some metal module trackers like from Amiga would sound great with this.
Also this game just screams Predator. It looks like the developers wanted to make a Predator action game but they couldn't get a license.
The giant skull boss, in the highest difficulty, completely owned me back in the day! XD
Used to play this game with Death Spiritual healing playing in the background. Bring your own soundtrack baby!
7:02 reminds me of a level in Bio Menace :)
This game looks fun to play.
Gosh, Bio Menace is such a great platformer as well.
The level with a ton of pogostick robots, right?
Yes, indeed :)
Had to stop halfway through to say, wow, the history of this game! Also, I almost thought this was a review for Alien Carnage right at the start, ha.
Wish the duke version had been completed, would have kicked ass I'm sure.
Holy crap, you reviewed Alien Rampage! I tried to figure the rights for this - I thought they transferred to the Flat Rock software via Softdisk, but the guy said he didn't have the rights to it.

I played a demo of this when i was little. Started looking for it a while ago and could not find it. The reason was that i thought it was a swamp monster. so thank you.
I was wondering when this would come up! Played it pretty recently too. Quite the coincidence.
I also thought of Halloween Harry from the title. I thought it was going to be a review of that game before I remembered you (probably) already covered it.
Wow that looks so cool!! Not to mention the X-Wing!!
I just found this game at a goodwill, had no idea of it. Not even available on eBay...yet
looks pretty awesome..try to find a copy..and by the way nice channel lgr.The problem is,everytime when i see a Gamereview on your Page for a Game back in time i want to have it hahaa
Greetings from Germany:)
Clint, you could always just play the duke music in the background and it matches really well.
I loved this game. Of course I was never supposed to play it when I was a kid.. but in a way.. that's what made it so good. Hardly looks like I remember, but those exploding guts are at least still as cool as I remember.
Thx! That's awesome! And i want THIS Duke Nukem Forever!)
Looks nice, but way too zoomed in for my taste.
I forgot about this game, it was one of my favourites.
Donkey Kong had that screen moving too. Only a lot faster, you didnt have to move towards anything. Seems a bit slow here, but yeah, a must for such a zoomed in sidescroller..
I do like the Blake Stone music in the beginning!
Looks good. To me the most obvious inspiration seems to have been Turrican 2 (Amiga version specifically). All the elements are there as well.
I loved this game from years past, and I even downloaded it a few years back because I missed it too muc.
I played the hell out of this game back in the days 😅 it's quite a hard game but what I loved about it was the action and fx. It never bothered me as a kid that there was no in-game music at all
