Today I attempt to replace the totally clogged PCV system in my 2005 Volvo V70R. The car was smoking under load, and miserably failed the "glove test" so this is the logical next step. This is the tough part about being a car enthusiast.

Having done this job, here are 2 pieces of advice...Yes, the lower bolt holes on the manifolds are slotted so you don't have to take the nut all the way off. BUT, don't get cute (like I did) and run the nuts down a bunch before putting the manifold on (to save struggling with those inaccessible nuts) and then tear the manifold gasket during reassembly, resulting in a mysterious single cylinder misfire code. Second, that lower left nut that you fought with...use a longer extension and come at it from in front of the manifold, with a wobble socket or u-joint adapter. Still a bitch, but a bit easier. Good luck.

Yeah, for a port injected engine to be this gunked up - it's had a VERY VERY long time between oil changes at some stage in it's life. I'd be wondering what condition the cam area is in, bet it's just as gunky.

@@skidder67 Sure is an unusual design. Manufacturers modern idea of a service interval doesn't help. My 2009 turbo charged Ford claims a 15,000km between oil changes. I call bullshit on that and change the oil and filter every 5000km.
@@Beer_Dad1975 that's a pretty smart move even BMW it talks about 13,000 miles between the oil changes I'll do one around four and a half thousand five thousand I think these manufacturers want the cars to fail so people come back to fix them or so that your car breaks and it makes you want to buy another one because the plastic pieces that go on these cars cost more than the original metal ones from back in the day

I remember when I almost got royally screwed by a repair shop. I noticed some oil leaks and that the oil stick was coming out of its hole, so I took my (first) car to a repair shop and told them the symptoms. They kept my car for half an hour and called me saying that I need an engine rebuild because my piston rings were shot and were causing excessive blowby which was increasing the crankcase pressure and causing the oil leaks and blowing out gaskets. I told them that I'm not willing to fork over engine rebuild amounts of money for that car, paid them 40 bucks for "diagnosing the issue", drove the car home, went on google, did a feather light amount of research, went back to my car with a couple of basic tools and fixed a clogged PCV system, completely curing all of the symptoms. Now I always read up on any symptoms my car is showing, find out the issue, confirm it and fix it myself if I have the space and tools. If not I find any information about the repair process I can and then and only then take my car into a shop I trust at least a little, and if they call me with anything reasonable I agree to the repairs. I pitty the people who just leave their cars at shops and say "do whatever needs to be done to make it work good".
I always do my own work except for having tires mounted and balanced. I don’t trust shops for anything else at this point. There is one suspension shop with old timers that do alignments the old fashioned way and I took a caddy that needed suspension work to them and they confirmed the exact same diagnosis as I had and so I trust them a bit on American cars. Still hesitant with euro cars but they do a good alignment on anything pretty much without a fancy computer.

Hey while you have the intake out, make sure to thoroughly clean your throttle body! The electronic contacts inside can become gunked up and cause error codes! Super easy fix especially with the intake already out! It was a 5 hour job for me to just replace mine!

A friends S60 was throwing like 20 codes relating to the throttle body. Mechanic gave it a deep clean and they went away.

Had an old 240 GET. Weird smell to the interior but she was a good old bus. Even manage to put a cubic yard of builder sand in the back once. Steering was a tad light but it was only half mile up a gentle Hill. Be well and stay safe.

Oh the PCV on the whiteblock, I had this on my early V70 2.5! That bolt on the manifold is indeed horrendous. My lower port was blocked up
too, so good job getting that out. Those hoses do get very brittle so great to replace them. Love this car - doing a great job dude

Last summer I was doing this job to my volvo s60 t5, and with me happened the same story as you, that little plastic pipe was clogged and broken off. I done some research, and find out, that for all turbo petrol volvo you cant buy that little pipe seperatly for all pcv system pipes, i found out that you can buy it seperatly for volvo s80 t6 engine, and it fits perfectly. I bought it oem, - 30731007, was about 30€. That little pipe with small inner diameter helps making vacuum only in idle, becouse it is connected to intake manifold, and as we know, in intake manifold negativ pressure is only when throttle is closed, and when you ar driving turbo compressor makes positive pressure, which is not good for pcv becouse of that pipe is so small. The main pcv vacuum is made by pipe which is connected to air intake pipe between turbo and air filter.

I drove a 1996 Volvo wagon when I worked at a lot and fell in love with it. I was looking for a Volvo wagon a few years ago but wound up with a VW wagon instead.
I have also made this kind of work on our 2002 volvo T5 coupé .
It also had started with bad idleing too.
Because of the runtime of our car i first thought that it possibly could be a worn throttle position sensor (TPS) - a typical problem on those older volvos.
There also was the ETS warning lamp lighting up sometimes at the dashbord. And there were some ETS error messeges in the obd diagnoses report too.
So i decided to replaced the old TPS by a contactless one... (there are some good videos on youtube showing how to do it...)
But it was not the only problem to be solved...
Next suspicious cause was the PCV system.
So i also replaced the whole stuff and cleaned out all of the ports (...like shown in this and a lot of similar videos on UA-cam, again...).
But there it comes:
When i finaly put everything together - after precautionary cleaning out every single port (which were not completely clogged when i started that work - like its the case in most of the other videos of volvos with such kinds of problems) - i have seen that the whole problem was caused by a tiny clogged hole inside the hollow screw, which connects the PCV hose to the intake manifold from the left bottom side...!! The hollow screw is not entirely drilled out, there is just a little hole from a dimension of about 2mm... And Nothing else... 🤔
The whole PCV replacement was complettely unnessesary.
So if you also got such kind of problems - nowerdays i would recommend every car enthusiast to check out the hollow screw first (aka banjo srcew) _ at least before dismounting and replacing the whole PCV stuff, if your clove test was positive before (like in this video too). Maybe you can safe a lot of time and money... 😉

As a retired Volvo Master Tech, thank you for showing how involved this repair is!!!! Usually Customers don’t understand why we charge so much labor. Now they can find you on the Tube and get a complete explaination of what all is involved. No more of the “It only took 20 minutes on UA-cam” bullshit!! BTW, after doing hundreds of this repair, we always quoted for the replacement of the hose that cracked on you. They almost always crack and are ALWAYS clogged also. Good luck on your CEM, AMP, and Yaw sensor repairs!

You should look into inviting Robert Spinner to give you a hand with some of the more unique problems you're dealing with. He's well known in the Volvo community and spends a lot of time driving around the US helping people fix their Volvos. His youtube channel is called Robert DIY.
Yes, Robert just moved permanently from Albuquerque to Cincinnati and is now in the Chicago area working on several people's Volvos. He changed out an automatic transmission for a manual in about 3 hours. He's done so many now he's getting pretty fast. I think that is his favorite project to do.

Did this exact job on my ‘05 R a couple of years ago. I wish I had your uncle around when try to get that lower bolt…it’s frustrating to say the least (insert lots of cursing here). Chasing dropped brass crush washers was the other standout memory. Thanks for the vid!

That manifold bolt is a lot easier to access if you unbolt the power steering pump first.
And removing the P/S pump gives you access to the PCV banjo bolt underneath the intake, you’ll want to torque that bolt in AFTER you get the manifold reinstalled, the new line is very stiff and won’t fit right if you tighten down before installing the manifold. (You’ll need a stubby 17 mm wrench)
still no BMW level CCV problems... keep it going Elliot, good content.

I can relate on the clogged PCV system. Replacing the 4.7 in my Durango right now and the system was entirely clogged as well. Had to do what you did, scrape everything out and replace a lot of parts. Should be worth it though. We've got a remanufactured engine, the old one dropped a valve seat and it grenaded in cylinder one. Hopefully we'll have it back assembled and in the truck tomorrow. Wish me luck.
My conclusion after doing some work on my MIL's 2004 S60 - I don't have enough time in my life to work on Volvos. Kudos to you sir for persisting.
Try a spray in cleaner when it's back together, I use a Wynn's product here in the UK and it does genuinely blast out stuff from bits you can never get to manually. Can't wait to see this up and running again!

The banjo bolt on the underside of the intakemanifold is a nightmare to put back on. Do it before you bolt the manifold back in place, makes life a little easier. My v70t5 from 2000 had the same trouble with the windshieldwipers, all of a sudden they came on and wouldn't rest untill i turned the car off. I couldn't find the answer on forums and yt on how to fix that. Until i came across a video explaining how to take apart the switch in the steering column. It's really easy and i cleaned the inside of the switch with some rubbing alcohol and q-tips. Never had any problems with the wipers after that.

Fun fact, the CEM originally was actually covered originally under the federal emissions warranty, even Volvo dealers didn't realize it. It was 8 years/80,000 miles. My brother's 2004 V70R had the CEM go kaput in 2011 or so and it was a very low milage vehicle. After I discovered the federal warranty info online he brought it up with the dealer who was just as surprised as us, and Volvo paid for a brand new CEM without question when it was brought up.
Also you should totally seafoam that engine when you're done

The line is almost always broken and/or clogged. Tip for doing this again or future DIY'ers: just get it when you order. The kits I get include it already. Obviously replace the intake gasket, clean the throttle body as someone else already mentioned.
Fcp in fcp euro stand for foreign car parts. Also I figured the pcv air oil separator would need to be replaced. They are common on the Volvo. And whenever doing it just get the whole kit. Saves time. Best of luck!

I think you’re right. Which has be concerned. I’ll be cleaning as much as I can while it’s apart.
Last year I did the PCV system on my XC70, I bought the complete kit from IPD. I took me six hours, but I also did a couple other things while I had things apart.
If mine was as clogged as yours is I would drop the oil pan and do a thorough cleaning on it as well.
That clog in the bottom PVC port was pretty bad. If you still fail the glove test after this you might want to drop the oil pan to clean out the PVC passage in side oil pan as well. That bottom PCV port routes to the passage in the oil pan and if it was clogged that bad it possible the one in the oil pan is clogged as well.
Yes exactly this. As a whiteblock owner I see to many people neglect the pan. A PCV clogs due to poor oil maintenance and so it’s pretty much a must to drop the pan especially if that lower port it that clogged. There is also a little tiny rubber and metal connection under the intake on turbos that is often forgotten
My 2002 V70 T5 with 240000km has perfectly working pcv, sucking in the glove. :) I guess this cars oilchanges has been few and far between...

Some advice from someone who has done this job many many times: first, drain the coolant and engine oil, then, a good step before attempting to remove the intake manifold is to remove the thermostat housing to provide better access to that very difficult to loosen bolt that Elliot's uncle was wrestling with in the video, and then; 1) remove the intake manifold, and replace your starter motor if you vehicle has more than 120K miles on it since you have to remove the intake manifold to replace the starter motor, and now would be a good time to do that; 2) in addition to the oil collection box that Elliot's dad cut in half, replace the PCV combo coolant/vacuum hose (the one that Elliot had to order at the stopping point in the video, as indeed, that vacuum line is likely to be plugged like Elliot's was, and is likely to be brittle and will break on you, and that coolant hose can often fail catastrophically if it is old and starting to rot; 3) replace the little banjo bolt that fits into the bottom of the intake manifold and the PCV combo coolant/vacuum hose, as that bolt has a little check valve ball and spring inside, and if that fails, the spring and ball will get sucked into the #2 cylinder and likely bend one or more of your valves or break a valve spring; which will require removing the camshaft cover, the cam shafts, and then the cylinder head to replace the bent valve(s), although a broken valve spring can be replaced with the head still mounted on the block; 4) replace the EVAP Emission hoses and the evap canister purge valve, as those lines and valve will likely have rotted, failed, and or got clogged, which is what allows the PCV system to get clogged in the first place; 5) clean or replace the throttle body. Assembly is the opposite of removal. Remember to replace the intake manifold gasket when you put it back together again.

5:37 to5:58 perfect explanation of my old cars leaks and leaks and what was that last thing a leaking waterpump and the bolts where buryed under crap so extension extension extension

@@ElliottAlvis in my previous car the heater hose clamps where buryed in the enginebay in a spot only the dealer tool fits so i made my own which fits in an electric screwdriver(no not a drill a electric screwdriver} and thats how i removed a broken hose capped it of for a day till my mate brought the parts the had laying around and wanted gone asap so i drive around with no heater for a day as that car was my daily till last year sigh french !@#@#$$#@!!~ cars
To my opinion since ive worked on the p2 platform what you were sucking up with the vacuum was the oil from the oil pan that hole runs to the top of the oil pan and there is a drain channel built in inside the pan i would recommend just to remove the pan and clean out that channel
A 10mm wobble socket comes in handy for that manifold.

I hate it when parts break and you have to wait on a special part you can't get locally. I almost had that happen on my Fiesta when I broke the connection of a hose that goes to the coolant res and the first guy I talked to said it was on backorder, but I managed to find probably the only one in the DFW metroplex and raced down there to get it before they closed. I don't have the garage space for a car to sit where I was working on it.
Where you dug all that crap out is a seal you need to replace it. Pulls off the block and looks like a tube. You will leak oil if you do not replace it. Change all pcv lines and take off the intake air hose before turbo and clean. Just did this to my XC70. On the intake a crows foot works great and makes getting that Pain in the butt bolt pretty easy.

The passage you are vacuuming out goes down to the oil pan hence why you are getting oil out of it so that’s actually a good thing. I’ve seen ones that were clogged to the point of needing to drop the oil pan to clear the passages properly.
