- In this video I share everything I know about the PCV system on the white block Volvo cars built between 1992 and 2004. Volvo 850, S70, V70, S40, V40, S60, V70XC, XC70, V70R, C70, etc.
Glove test should be done with the car parked on a level surface.
Compression numbers: NA 186 - 216, Turbo engine 156 - 186.

I did the glove test on my 06 V70 and the glove completely filled up. In what I saw and read, NOBODY mentioned that the test should be performed with a warm engine on a level surface. I did the test with the engine cold and the front jacked up a foot or two. So we'll see how it does when I test it right. I also never heard about compression (rings) being something to check before spending $500 and a LOT of effort on a PCV overhaul. "Everything you need to know" is right! Grateful again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I was also on the fence about genuine Volvo vs aftermarket. You answered that one for me as well!
you are welcome. Just checked a car I picked up a few months ago that had a PCV system replaced less than 10,000 miles ago and it's shot. I already need to redo it due to poor quality parts.
Thank you!!!! I was about to buy a Pcv system for my 98 s70, for $340 because I did the glove test but my engine was cold, Also I never checked that plastic hose, so thanks for letting me know about that. Hopefully my system is still working, Im at 222k miles. You are super helpful.
You are welcome.
The Pcv ended up being bad. I replaced it
Nice engine bay; My focus has been top tier fuel, consistent oil changes, long drives, and now using Valvoline R&P. Roll for LIFE
Thanks for sharing
Beautiful advices- Very helpful advices and preventive maintenance.
Thanks for watching!
jusy bought a 99 volvo S70 awd for winter love the vids been binge watching them looking so replace speakers and put in a new stereo keep making them!! earned a sub from me
Glad you like them!
You are correct about aftermarket parts. I got Rein brand for the crankcase hose and the elbow hose. The top hose split in half at the seem after 2 months so i had to use aluminum tape to reseal it and the elbow hose is starting to ooze oil. I used Oetiker clamps for the job and not the worm clamps. I would have to redo the hoses and also install a catch can while the IM is off.
🤦🏾♂️
Robert, IF YOu ARE a LIVE - I apprecoate much (english i not my native languae), but what I want to say - keep going !!! Volvos rule!!!
Thank you, I will.
Sorry to bother you, Robert, but I couldn't find the compression numbers you mentioned in the video. Thanks again for all your help and the effort you invest in these videos.
They are there now.
@@RobertDIY Thank you very much!
Like Rob said. Quality parts will make it last longer. IPD and FCP carries them. Volvo knows their cars and knows their parts. Do mot cheap out on engine oil. Mobil 1 FullSyn works great thanks bro!
thanks for sharing.
I own a 02 vovlo xc ...this guy knows

Great info. Love your R wagons!
Thanks!
Beyond just a great video, that car has 467K miles on it. I think I'll listen to you. Thanks -
Thanks for watching. 503,000 now. ;)
I had the PCV system replaced in my 1998 S70 last weekend. :) Parts were from FCP Euro.
Were they Volvo parts?
@@RobertDIY Yessir. :)
I Thank you Sir, best video on the subject!
Thanks for watching
Great info as usual
thanks for watching.
Robert this is helpful thank you 🙏 for your help.
You are very welcome
Very informative, i haven't checked yet but have a feeling the pcv system needs to be serviced and replaced on the s70 i have.
very common.

Thanks for all your informative videos! Recently got myself a 97 850 n/a and I love it. Pretty sure it has just about all the common volvo problems, heater core, pcv, wiper arms etc. Quick question, I recently replaced the battery and it sat with the battery off for a few days. When I put the new battery on it idles rough almost sounds cammed. I've been told probably a vacuum leak? Any ideas?
Not really. I'd drive it around and see if the CEL comes on.
Good afternoon 😊 Robert and thanks for sharing, the pcv replacement parts should come from Volvo retailers
Yes sir.
Just completed compression test on my 99 s70 T5. Results were as followed: 180-200-195-193-190. Now there was some oil in the spark plug wells (Assuming from oil cap seal or PCV hose). Are these readings high for a T5 model? How should I interpret this? Passed the glove test but hose beside oil cap is quite firm.
Thanks for the quality content and Cheers from Canada!
Gauge is likely a little off. Great numbers. I'd leave the system alone if it passes the glove test.
I have a ‘96 non-turbo 10 valve 850 and the intake manifold gasket is a lot different than the 20 valves. I can’t find a pcv kit with the gasket I need. I’m hoping a nearby dealership can order the right parts for me so I can do this job myself. I should probably do a compression test first like you suggest. Thanks for the video Robert!
I understand
www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/engine/gaskets/manifold/gasket-intake-manifold/1020342/
This should be the one you need, it was the part for my 1994 10V.
Maybe double check which revision of the oil trap housing is installed, on my '94 10V it was apparently the old style that needed another short connecting hose to the crankcase.
@@MaxKuehn Thank you for the link. I found a pcv kit with a lot of extra parts in it that might come in handy.
Robert, once again I appreciate ya!
My question is: Before I do an oil change on my 2004 V70, can I pour a half a quart of trnny fluid or kerosene and run the engine for a couple of mile before I drain it and put the new oil in?
Yes but why would you want to do that? These new oils are loaded with cleaners and additives to you shouldn't need to do that. You can also send your oil off to be tested by a lab.

Hey, thanks thanks for the link Robert. I was just asking. Curious on your thoughts about that.
Hey Robert I have a Volvo v40 2000 1.9t. The car passes glove test when warmed up at idle. However, I’m thinking it is failing under load. I say this because my crankshaft seal keeps blowing out and giving me a large oil leak. When I replace the seal it was fine for a few hours of driving and then today I put more load on it and drove it a little harder and then bam again another oil leak coming from the main engine pulley. I replace the oil pump gasket and o ring as well. All Volvo parts. I replaced the pcv 40k miles ago. I’m thinking I need to drop the oil pan and clean out the ports especially the one that deals with the turbo or higher pressure. Is there any other tests I can do before I start this job? Thank you so much for everything. Your videos have really saved my Volvo.
Is the crank worn? Usually this happens to cars that have worn crankshafts. Grap the harmonic balancer and see if you can push it in and out.
@@RobertDIY okay I will look and I forgot to mention that I started getting this oil leak after changing the oil. I had my car on intervals of 8k mile changes with mobile 1 synthetic high mileage 10w 40 (Florida) with high mile Lucas stabilizer
@@RobertDIY Hey Robert so it definitely had some play. Do I have to replace the whole crank?
man, it's probably easier to replace the engine. Try wrapping a little teflon around the seal's outer edge.
Hi Robert! Thanks for the video, very enlightening. I've just cleaned out the PCV system (box and associated lines) on my 2003 XC90 2.9 T6, and a fair load of crud came out. Put it all back together and the car is running better than ever, but after a short drive I've noticed it's quite smokey and there's a bit of oil on the floor 😒
Before I take it back apart to find out what it may be, do you mind if I ask what you would check first?
Thanks very much ☺️
I don't know how you can clean it, it should be replaced. Probably has an old part now leaking on the bottom of the oil trap and something loose.
@@RobertDIY With the box removed, I connected a hot water tap and let it run through for about 20 mins (periodically covering up some of the holes to leave only one exposed), and it just blew all the crud out. I cleaned the nipple and replaced the brittle line attached to it.
Like I say, it's running awesome... But it's blowing a fair bit of smoke out the exhaust and I had a bit of oil.
But, as you mentioned the bottom port may not be sealed properly, so I'll take the intake manifold off again and see what I can find.
Would you have any suggestions on how to clear the bottom port going into the block without dropping the oil pan please?
Thanks Robert.

Hi Robert
I just did the glove test and it inflated. Don’t have the time and money to service it right now.
Can I drive with the dipstick pulled out a bit to relieve crankcase pressure?
Will this protect my seals until I can service it?
‘96 850 T-5
Thanks so much for your help!
Cheers from Switzerland
Why not keep driving like you have been?
Robert DIY
Won’t that push out a seal eventually because of the pressure
?
Are there any downsides to letting the pressure bleed out through the dipstick?
Thank again!
Thanks, the video is very informative. I checked my PCV using the glove test, and there is a lot of vacuum. I am trying to figure out a problem on my 2004 non turbo V70. It makes a high pitched whistling sound after it warms up. The sound happens while idling or light throttle. I got a surprise when I did the glove test. The whistling sound stops when the oil filler cap is taken off! I guessing there is some sort of vacuum leak somewhere. I don't see any broken or loose hoses. Do you have any diagnostic advice please? Thanks in advance.
I'm not 100% sure on that model, but Volvo changed the system close to that year and the system goes bad and creates to much vacuum. Does the sound go away when you pull the oil dip stick as well? You should ask the guys on the VolvoSpeed Facebook page or Matthew's Volvo site.
@@RobertDIY Thank you so much for the reply. I think it has an abnormally high amount of vacuum because it is hard to get the oil filler cap off while the engine is running, then there is a short whoosh of air when the cap is loosened.. Yes, the sound stops when I pulled the dipstick out. I'll check the other sites that you suggested. Your videos are awesome!
Yay! Ok I will get her warmed up first then retest. Oh by the way I got her started and now going through all the systems to figure out winter mode being on now and the SRS air bag is all negative news for me also. But today I'm not getting the fan to come on so I'm looking at the relay and about to test it with a 9volt hoping that test wilm work.
Do you have any other tests for the fan relay it's a 2 speed 98 s70???

Hey Robert, thanks for everything your'e doing.
One question, how many PSI are you looking for during a compression test to rule out blowby being the issue?
And yes, these dang plastic pipes get real brittle, ask me how I know...
186 - 216 NA
156 - 186 Turbo
So odd for me because I rebuilt a b5234t and cold, it creates vacuum well, hot the glove inflates.. Doing a compressor test soon.
ok.
Good afternoon Robert. Hope you are staying healthy.
What type of oil do you recommend I use for my V70 XC 2002. 160k?
Synthetic or conventional?
Disregard. I was halfway through the video. You’re awesome dude.
Full synthetic oil for turbo cars.
Question, 98 s70 non turbo. Did & intake clean, started seeing excessive oil from cap, & stick tube immediately thereafter. Failed glove test. Rechecked pcvs hoses, found the locking elbow nearest to the intake was not seated and had fell out. Inside of that elbow was caked/full of a whitish yellow sludge. Cleaned & reattached. Fixed right? Nope, now I cannot get a pass on the glove test. Could a pcvs vacuum leak destroy the system after 2 days?
no.
ua-cam.com/video/s76DjowN68I/v-deo.html
Hi Robert I have a 97 Volvo glt I believe is turbo and pcv i think is a little carbon build in it do you think if a drive the car until is fix with the oil deep stick sticking out just enough to let the fumes and smoke to come out from there ?
I don't understand your question.
For my non turbo I cleaned out the hoses and separator outside of the car before it clogged just as a preventative measure so I wouldn’t have to worry about finding a replacement and it seems fine. I would say it was maybe 40% clogged but all the hoses and plastic felt strong and fresh still. I took it all apart and used seafoam and gunk foamy engine cleaner to get all of the carbon out of the system so Is it risky to clean it every so many years as a preventative measure so I won’t have the struggle of trying to find a new system? I change my oil pretty frequent because I do drive aggressively and use good quality oil and Mann filters.
If it fails the glove test, service it.
Thanks Robert. i have one question. Would an oil catch can be advisable on a late 2004 Volvo V50 t5 ?
Not unless you have done performance modifications.
I just bought a 2007 v70, has 188k miles. I havent done the test yet, was told by a volvo mechanic to check just by putting thumb over the dipstick tube. It wasn't pushing air very hard, so im not sure how bad things are in there. The engine was not warmed up either, so ill try the glove test tomorrow.
I bought the volvo replacement pcv kit, but i did not buy the whole turbo pipe. It's another $240, so i just got the replacement nipple with the banjo bolt that ties into the intake. Is there anything to look for that i should absolutely change that wraparound tube? Or will i be ok doing just the "nipple" replacement ?
I usually just do the nipple.

Dear Robert (and everyone else in this section) When I put a glove on my volvo v70r 1998 it doesn't blow up nor is it sucked in. What does that mean?
it's going bad.
At VW 2.0 TDI (2010 CFHC) engine the glove is inflated.Y have tested 3 diferent cars .
It is ok like that?Thank you
Are the engines hot? I'm not sure how those TDI's work but if the engine has pressure I would think it can push out seals.
Hi Robert, I am tuning a volvo engine and I need help, do you know if i can delete de pvc? the engine is for conpetition?
I think that I am going to put the line that goes to the turbo intake to the air. Can I have problems if I dont have the intake underpresure?
The hose that goes to the turbo inlet puts vacuum on the engine. Most people use a catch can. For racing purposes you could vent it to the atmosphere but I would use a catch can and maybe a filter as well.
@@RobertDIY Thank you for your answer!
So if the ingine dont have vacuum I wouldent going to damage anithing?
Thank you mate..i was doing wrong
My problem was..the IAC vakve was broken..and keeped open
Thanks for sharing
i got a 2002 S80 t6 i it's got about 121,000 miles i serviced my pcv only 4 months ago and it started to clog again but a little like your car in the vid i used professional parts Sweden for my oil trap that i replaced should i have replaced other components?
are you doing the test with the engine hot and on a level ground?
@@RobertDIY yes!
@@RobertDIY what do you think should be done?
Hello, Robert. I need answer to the question what will happen if I cut the hose coming from the head, close the part going to the separator and vent the part coming from the head to the atmosphere by extending it and putting filter at the end of it?
I'm about to do it and I can't find any information on someone else who's done it. The reason is that the mechanics in my area do not acknowledge that kind of maintenance. They tried to rip me off with engine rebuild. I don't feel comfortable trying to replace the pcv system myself due to lack of experience and fear of mistake.
ok
Hey Robert I recently did the pcv job on a 94 850 t5 but it still fails the glove test and spits a lot of oil through the fill hole and dipstick, cylinder compression test shows 13, 12, 12.6, 12.2 and 12.1 Bar which according to Haynes manual is good, it is tuned to about 300 hp (turbo gauge goes a little bit over the whole white area) but that shouldn't affect it at idle? Should it? Have any idea what it could be? (has about 300 000 km)
Is the car on a level ground when you check it?
Maybe something is not connected properly or clogged? 🤔
@@RobertDIY checked again, and it worked, but sometimes it shoots out the dipstick and spits oil, not always and I haven't yet figured out any specific causes to it.
Do you know where I can find that front bumper cover? Ty. I have a 1995 850 t5 R with fog lights
Swedish Car Parts soon.
Do you have a video on how to change the boot seals on the coil packs on a 1999 volvo V70 nonturbo
Huh? Just pull them off.
Is there any reason why because of the pcv system my turbo would burn a lot of oil? I just bought an c70t5 from 98 and I got a lot of oil in the turbo coming, and the guy said to me to check the pcv system...
A bad or clogged PCV can cause the system to blow the oil vapor through the engine, however, it's not very common.
ua-cam.com/video/Qfece4bER7Q/v-deo.html
despite a pcv replacement it leaks from the pcv hoses also where is this banjo bolt exactly?
Huh? I don't even know what kind of car you have.
I got a volvo 850 1996 its a beautiful low mileage car however when hot runs rough then dies and wont start cold runs perfect any ideas i changed thermostat and coolant sensor
ua-cam.com/video/NhtUXZTurzo/v-deo.html
Hi Robert. Can a clogged system lead to low oil pressure?
no
Technically it can indirectly lead to oil problems like if it causes pressure and blows a seal for the cams or something and then you’ll start to have oil pressure problems especially when you have it pour out of the engine. But the pcv being clogged won’t immediately cause low pressure. If you have low pressure check for bubbles in the oil. If it has a lot of bubbles then you possible have failed o-rings in the oil pan causing air to get into the system. Now you can have poor oil maintenance causing the pcv to clog like Robert said in the video and it being clogged can cause the oil pressure problem as well. The pcv being clogged and low oil pressure can have the same cause. If you have low pressure then immediately test the sensor and also check the oil gallery for oil condition. You’ll want to run the engine for a few short oil change intervals to clean out the block (I had a clogged engine in the past causing oil pressure problems) and I also used seafoam when cleaning it out.
Again, no it will NOT cause low oil pressure. It causes high crank case pressure but not low oil pressure.
Low oil pressure will cause engine damage pretty quick.
Mr Robert over there building sleepers 😂🫡
😜
Hey brother I have bought a volvo s40 t4 200hp and when I bought the car the previous owner gave me a black box and he told me it's for the pcv system and that the oil dipstick pops up every now and then and to stop that problem I need to install this box to stop my car from spilling oil out of the dip stick hole, he told me it's only doing this because the car is at 145k miles and he had just installed all new belts and a brand new turbo, he said that's what caused the increased pressure do you think this will really fix my problem?
Yep, PCV
I made the mistake of buying a complete PCV system from a reputable company that specializes in Volvos (west coast) that cost $99 for my 850R. I haven't put more than 1K miles on my car and the hoses have cracked which are causing vacuum leaks. I know next time to buy Genuine Volvo pcv system.

Hi mate..From Scotland....after parts are really fine for Volvo...ie turbo boosters valve are made by Pierburg,,pierburg direct half price Volvo fuel filters.oil filters are made by Bosch,,,,,l could go on and on...Volvo like bmw..merc etc use outside factorys to make many parts for them...ie Mannol oil is who makes trans oil,,,motor oil and more is half price,,,find out who Volvo buys their stuff from,,,l know in Europe standards for sellers are much higher....same as our octane fuel.
interesting.
